Tube Sound Comparison - ECC83 VS ECC808 (VALVO)
Comparing ECC83 with ECC808
Hope you enjoy this video. and if you do subscribe ! :)
ECC808 info from tubemuseum.org
"The ECC808 is a low hum, low microphony and low crosstalk dual triode for high sensitivity AF amplifiers, especially for two channel stereo circuits. The static values of the ECC808 are practically identical to those of the ECC83. Unlike the ECC83, however, the ECC808 is only intended for parallel heating (6.3 V / 0.34 A).
In combination with a more practical socket circuit by improved shielding and better cathode isolation, a particularly high freedom from hum could be achieved. (Ripple voltage at G1 approx. 4 μV with pin 4 at ground.) The microphony resistance could also be improved by a factor of 3.
Due to the good shielding between the two systems, loudness and clarity controls can also be arranged between the two stages without difficulty in the case of cascade amplification. With two-channel amplification, a crosstalk attenuation of -50 dB at 10 kHz can be achieved."

Tube Sound Comparison.- Modern VS Vintage Pt. II - ECC83/12AX7 (Best of both world)
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video I make sound comparison between my favorite vintage and modern combination. In the vintage set I use 3 Philips Miniwatts made in Heerlen,Holland in late 50's and in the modern set I have 2x JJ ECC803's followed by JJ E83CC. In my humble opinion there is no way that modern tubes could be better the modern ones, but it's also the question of price and availability. Hope you enjoy th...

Tube Sound Comparison - Ei Yugoslavia VS Telefunken ECC83/12AX7
มุมมอง 4.3Kปีที่แล้ว
Another video on tube sound comparison, this time I'm comparing Telefunken with Ei Yugoslavia. The perfection of German engineering can't be denied and Telefunken's sure hold their fame spot for a good reason, however Ei were also amazing tubes and not as expensive. Can be a little microphonic but if not they shine on their own just greatly. Hope you enjoy this video.
Tube Sound Comparison - ECC83/12AX7 Modern VS. Vintage ( JJ vs Philips)

Video in which i compare modern and vintage tubes NOTE; Use hi quality speakers or headphones to listen to the samples. In samples where guitar sound was played only (no bass and drums) you can hear the microphone pickin up the sound of track in the back, amp was set in the same room where i was recording, I appologize for that :) Hope you enjoyed, subscribe for more!

Night and day difference. Vintage much, much better sounding. Not even close, especially on clean samples. JJ just sounds dead.
Thanks! Another was an ear-opener-it revealed another incredible difference, so surprising to hear both sounding so pleasant in their own unique ways, each with a very distinct stereo field.
Thanks! That was an ear-opener-it revealed an incredible difference, and it was so surprising to hear both summing units sounding so pleasant in their own unique ways, each with a distinct stereo field.
I use 3 JJ 12ax7 tubes in my phono preamplifier and they are pretty good. I've had them for a few years and zero problems.
Hi, thanks for your great channel. May I ask you a question? I have been doing a lot of research to replace the preamp tubes in my Fender Blues Junior guitar amp. Thanks to your videos i can clearly hear that 1960s Mullards are more pleasing to my ears than the JJs that I was thinking of getting. Now I have 2 Blackburn 1960s Mullards and a 1969 Brimar on the way from eBay. In this amp v3 is the phase inverter - do you have any recommendations for which ones I should put in which positions? Eg Brimar in the v3 PI socket and v1 and v2 both Mullard?
Ok now that you've read our comments on which we prefer.....which tube do you prefer and why? Ive got mullards, amperex and phillips but no tungsram. Hmmm i may have to pick one up for a different flavor.
I have a pair of these tubes (but Pinnacle labeled) in my TL Audio Ivory 2 5021 stereo compressor. They sound punchy as hell!! They make the definition of bass notes incredibly well defined. I fully rate these tubes ❤❤❤
I listened to this video with good monitor headphones i can say that except gain which is not proper to test this video with difference in volume . the sound difference is chaotic the Ei , bloats the sound and creates a more mushy coloured result , the telefunken on the other hand has a clear sound with balanced configuration and proper individual organ discrimination ... i would choose the Telefunken all the way
Tungsram is super underrated - early production ecc83 are absolute gems
Awesome tubes! Recommended! Grtz from Hungary
Nice playing. The Mullard sounds a touch fuller. Tungsram maybe a touch more lower mids? Very similar
The earlier production JJ ECC83S tubes were raved about by all that used them. I still have some in my collection and yes they still sound great. So something changed at JJ as they went from having the best of type tube to making something below par.
but why do they sound different?
just sounds like you lowered the volume for the new tubes
But i didnt :)
i cant hear a difference maybe i need headphones..im not sure i am very surprised at the comments all saying how much better the vintage sound
Thank you for the comparison, great video!
I liked the vintage better on the solo tracks, but when the the other instruments were added I felt the JJ's had more clarity and air in the mix. It reminds me of the subtle differences between a Neve board and an API board. Neve having the more warm, huge sound...while the API has unmatched clarity and punchiness. As more tracks are layered, those sonic signatures tend to compound....so warm & huge is more prone to muddiness, while clarity & punchiness are more prone to becoming warmer and tighter. So I'd take the Philips tube for playing solo guitar and then use the JJ for playing in a band or multi-track recording.
Whatever works for you :)
this video makes a lot of sense why music from back in the day just has alot more life
What year is the mullard? Im looking to purchase a mullard for this sound!!! Also, any tips when looking for this tube?
Hey there..Mullard is from 1964, whatever your looking you need to be lucky to find it for good price and condition :) usually this can be found on second hand market place such is eBay or your country-local second hand websites etc :)
May be its personal taste but I preferred the 6N2P by far-cleaner,open, detailed, exciting, foot tapping. The ECC83 sounded just the opposite. Very muted and dull lacking excitement, smeary as though someone grabbed the treble tone control and turned it down.
What amp? is this secret?
Bogner Alchemist into 1x12 Greenback cab
@@ecc8344 ok cool
I have a Mazda tube that says Made in England BVA, which confused me because when I search online I see that Mazda is made in France. Ah, so now I can assume I have a Brimar. Thanks for the info
Mazda rebranded lot of tubes beside making their own, i think the "silver/chrome plates" is the only true 12ax7 made by Mazda, France. What you have is Brimar, great tube anyways, similar to Mullard but bit more bright sounding.
2 years back I bought a Philips 12ax7 labelled tube with delta 7l and a barely visible mc5 on the bottle. However, it has a ring getter and not a D. This confused me as I later read that all the long plates had D getters - yet your second tube has a ring! In other words - I'm happy to see I wasn't tricked!
Hi there. There are many variations of getters among long plate tubes, horse shoe, side post getter, ring getter.. etc. depends on the series and manufacturer, there are many tube fascinado websites out there where you can check out which exact series was your tube :)
Do you have any experience with the square getter tubes? I've been interested in seeing the differences.
Hi there. I dont think the getter shape influences the sound as much as the overall materials and chemical compounds that were use to make tube all together. I believe that getters were more of "experimental" component which were manufacturers playing around to per say create more efficient tube function by absorbing gas molecules.
The new tubes were a tad granier in the mids which I liked, and the old had a tad more depth and top end presence.
The gain on the JJ seems slightly lower than the gain on the miniwatt.
Yes, PHILIPS product from 1959 Amperex Holland and Siemens Halske Munich are some of my favorites...
You can still buy Philips NOS JAN 5751 tubes which are USA made I seem to remember. I bought mine from The Tube Store and it is the best sounding tube I've ever heard. There does not seem to be any less output from these tubes in V1 position but if there is I can't hear it.
the asking prices for real lorenz stuttgart are stupid expensive. i luv those valvos.
Were there any ECC83 types made by Lorenz? I know Lorenz made some tubes but im not sure about audio tubes
@@ecc8344 yes of course. very famous among tube audiophiles....ecc88, E88CC, PCC88, EC81-83, etc. they didnt make many compared to the other german manufacturers, and they have a reputation of being outstanding audio tubes.
The first track with the clean electric guitars shows the differences the best - nice test !
Awesome video!!! Can't wait to try it in my preamp 🤪
Thanks man! You described the differences exactly how I heard it. Got a lot of german old and nos tubes myself. The ECC808 are basically new and will loosen up a little bit after a reasonable burn in or using time. They may become very similar to the regular ECC83 valvos regardless of their construction. The glass of the 808 seems to be thicker also - mabe to achieve higher vacuum and longer lifetime out of these expensiver examples. These where also used in laboratory measuring instruments. At least that was where I pulled them out back in the days when Höchst Industries gone down and scraped their old equipment.
Thank you for your comment and giving some cool info :)
The Valvo ECC83 sounded great... more dimensional. Nice video.
The valvo sounds more low mids to me. Nice comparison.
Both tubes are manufactured by Valvo. Ecc808 being rebranded to ITT Lorenz..but was also indeed made in the Hamburg plant :) thank you!
@@ecc8344 Cool, got It. Same manufacture, but another variantion of ecc83.
Nice as per usual! What amp do you use? Is it the same amp for both the clean and gain tones? Regards
Thank you! Yes ,same amp (Bogner Alchemist) with clean and crunch channel 👍
No, the Mullards Don't have "slightly more detail and definition". It's the other way around.
Short plate tube sounds almost always thinner and more sterile than medium and long plate tube version. Compare always tubes with pretty equal height of plate never a long vs short plate!
The reason why i made comparison is to point out those very differences you just mentioned. Not everyone knows that, therefore you have an example here.
Although I think the Philips tubes were winners here, I do like the JJ long plate tubes a lot. The long plate modern tubes are certainly decent sounding. In this test, the JJ had a tighter more defined bass response and good frequency extension. Plenty good enough for most cases, but you are right when you say the vintage tubes sound more '3D'. The 3 dimensional midrange of the Philips was very noticeable and awesome sounding, but at the cost of a less well defined bass response. I'm currently choosing tubes for some Pultec style EQ's for mastering and may well go for either the JJ ECC803S or Sovtek 12AX7LPS purely for their linearity and neutrality. Still, gotta love the old tubes though ❤
the Tube Sound Comparison is not fair. the ECC83 is direct and the 6N2P is handicaped by several contacts more due to adaptators. Anyway, the 6N2P does the work fine.
I have both and I prefer Tungsram.
Both are lovely. Thank you
I like the 6N2P too and the price remains very favourable Thank you for a very good video
The JJ sounds smaller and etches the sound in an unpleasant way. I remember trying the JJ 12AU7 in my tube channel strip. It was unusable. NOS FTW!
Tungsrams sound richer and more harmonically complex - to my ears anyway 😂
Subscribed BTW ❤
Thanks for the video. I needed to hear what someone thought about the RFT ECC83. Now I know what my options lean towards. Thanks
Interesting ? Never used JJ tubes , I have a selection of vintage tubes that I swap but for new tubes EH is workable . In my Mc240 I can hear whatever changes tubes make. Telefunken is always nice.
Just recently got more serious about rolling quality, vintage preamp tubes in and out of my guitar amp and just want to say that I have been enjoying the content of your videos. Good stuff! 👍 So far, I'm really liking the Tungsram ECC83, after using a late 50's Baldwin-branded Raytheon Black Plate for the past few months. Both are VERY nice compared to the contemporary tube makes. Next up will be a GE-branded Mullard I63 Blackburn, like the tube you've shown here in this video.
Awesome man! Enjoy the tube rolling, its sooo much fun. And the reason i've made this channel is to deliver videos i wanted to see myself when I started to tube roll back then. So here you can have some info and comparison clips to see what you can go for :) enjoy!

Is the jj sounds good in tube mic?
Im not sure about that, probably vintage tube would work better :)
