Wild camps, hill-walks, hikes - and maybe, one day, a National Trail or two.
A keen hill-walker all my life I only reconnected with wild camping in 2021. I'm on a learning curve with both skills and modern equipment. (especially filming for youtube!). I'm always open to suggestions as to how I can improve so please dive into the comments with any hints , tips or advice you think might help or with reactions to what you see in my videos.
Hopefully my stumblings might inspire one or two of you to have a go yourselves. Just remember to respect the countryside - and most importantly Leave No Trace.

Black Mountain, Wild Camp - with a visit by the Army!
The Black Mountain (Y Mynydd Du to give it its proper name) in the west of the Brecon Beacons National Park is an area of upland moors and stunning escarpments. For this visit I ascended Fan Brycheinniog from the east and camped near to the Bronze Age burial cairn on Fan Foel. This is my 2nd camp of the year and i was blessed with excellent weather though I arrived to late for the sunset.
During the night I saw my first moonrise- a blood red moon at that, was visited briefly by a fox and by a succession of army patrols, some of which thought I was their checkpoint! Unfortunately I wasn't able to film any of this!

Our biggest walk during our week in the Lake District. Started by climbing Wetherlam from Coppermines Valley, then up the Prison band to Swirl How, onto Great Carrs, Grey Friar and Brim Fell. Then across Goat's Hawse to Dow Crag and back to Coniston along Walna Scar Road. A long day but really enjoyable.

Siwmae roger Always enjoy your vids and I know you like to pronounce the welsh words properly and you do a bloody good job of it , so I hope you don’t mind me telling you that hyd is pronounced heed. The y in welsh has two sounds at the end of a word it’s normally ee in the middle or on its own it’s her minus the h but there are a few exceptions like hyd. And for the ll in llyn place your tongue as if to say L then blow around the sides of your tongue for a perfect pronunciation of Ll
Ah - that's good to know, thanks. I must admit that sometimes I miss out on naming a feature as I have no idea how to pronounce it.😄. I just think it's respectful to at least try. It? It winds me up when people say "Corn doo"! Just lazy. Thanks Nathan for watching and your helpful comment. Pob Hwyl.
Cracking video I have a lot of walks in the Beacons on my channel so I enjoyed your video brilliant weather I have subscribed to your channel cheers Andy
Cheers Andy, I'll check your channel out. Thanks for watching
Lovely video, great to watch. Just subscribed from a fellow TH-camr 😉👍
@@PhilDodsworthOutandAbout Thanks Phil. Glad to have you on board. ATB, Roger
You’re very welcome 😉👍
Fantastic video, stunning views and great quality video too. Take care 👍🙏
Thank you, that's very kind. ATB, Roger
Always a pleasure to watch your little vids matey. I'm 54 and love my wild camping so to see you still going gives me hope for the future. There's something very calming about watching your adventures but I have to admit to having a little chuckle when you slipped over, "shit, bollocks, bugger"! Keep it up 🙂
I did wonder whether I should have taken that bit out - but decided that's me as I am so left it in. I hope to keep going for sometime yet. Thanks for watching, ATB, Roger
Beautiful day for hiking and camping. Thank you for sharing 😊Take care
Yes, a rare good couple days of goo d weather - in between two storms! All the best, Roger
You had some good weather for it, Roger, it looked nice and crisp and the views were fantastic. I think I'm due a visit to the Black Mountain range after watching this, it's definitely the most peaceful area of the BBNP...as long as no squaddies rock up past midnight.
Yes, it's very quiet, especially if you stray from the Lyn Y Fan Fach /Picws Du circuit. There's plenty to go at for sure. And yes, Squaddies - even the supervisors thought I was the checkpoint! Thanks for watching, ATB.
What an amazing sunset Roger, that looks sublime. Your last 2 videos have been splendid. A blood red moon. SIGH! We were robbed on the GR20 by a fox. Never heard a thing, got up to see our stuff scattered everywhere. So we bought some more provisions. The bar of chocolate we bought had one of those wildlife cards in it…. a fox! 🤣 on a more serious note. Arseholes indeed. Why oh why do they feel the need to leave a bloody mess & scorch the ground?! Brainless. ATB. Sue
Thanks Sue, very kind. I find it hard to realise I'd never seen a moonrise before, never mind a blood red one. I packed all my loose stuff in the rucsac overnight and tied it to the trekking pole holding my tent up just in case the fox came back! ATB. Roger
not a huge fan of kidney beans but looks beautiful. Love watching the moon, thou don't think I've ever seen a blood moon. wonder if the altitude has anything to do helping your hearing. Hope you're okay btw <3
I think it's probably because I feel at peace out there, no stress, no noise , no worries. I'll tell Linda no chilli if you come down again. 😀
What splendid conditions to be out in Roger. I know what you mean about being out of practise after a long lay-off. I'm a gormless and chaotic camper at the best of times, but was even more so on the last one.
Yeah, my routines (such as they were) are all to pot at the moment. Hopefully it'll come back before Linda comes out with me in the Spring! ATB.
That was bril Roger👌🏻 got to say I’m the same in the hills in a tent it’s it’s like all the stress just melts away 🙏🏼 Simple things matter, and nothing else ! Super weather too for it mate Enjoyed that 👍🤠 Give my regards to Linda 👍 Simon
Thanks Simon. Apart from the night time visits by the Army it was a very peaceful camp. ATB, Roger
I enjoyed your video. As a fellow elder backpacker with tinnitus I think we would enjoy heading out together. There is a spot on the Appalachian Trail where the army has combat exercises. They have scared many backpackers. I agree on the unexpected surprises like a blood red moon.
Thanks Gary. We've been watching people on the AT and PCT for the last two seasons, I can't imagine walking that far. Dreadful what the storms did to the AT lately.
@thewanderingforester my body could not take those long walks on through AT. I'm happy with 1 or 2 night trips in Virginia and West Virginia. I do get out at least once a month.
I'm a pipe-smoker and I was anxiously awaiting a delivery of Blood Red Moon tobacco from America.Last night I watched your video and lo and behold, this morning it was delivered.Well done Roger!
Happy to help in any way I can.😄😄
"Absolute a***holes", I couldn't agree more. As you say, you can't let it spoil your trip, but it is certainly infuriating! I think we all know that feeling of walking back down a hill and not being able to see our cars 😅 Nice video Roger, thanks.
The only thing that worries me about wildcamping is whether the car will be ok when I get back. Thanks for watching. ATB.
Another summit that’s on my to do list. Stunning weather for you mate! 👌🏻
Yeah, amazing weather - all gone to pot now though! Cheers.
Apparently, our brains are programmed to make the moon look larger. It always looks massive in the sky, but if you take a photo of it, its tiny. Great video, I like the way you really take us with you on the journey and explain the stages of your camp - thank you.
Thanks. Interesting above our brains and the moon, I wonder why that is. I am trying to tell the story of my camps, glad you like it. ATB
@@thewanderingforester I have no idea, I think I read somewhere that its because our night sight is attuned to safety, hunting and avoiding being hunted. Our black and white vision (which is nearly all of our sight) is much higher resolution that our colour vision.
Nice one Roger. Probably those squadies probably carried SA80 rifles or if a really big gun gpmg machine gun. Btw I saw a massive blood red moon above Malham cove 2 summers ago. Wished I had telephoto. You’re right about idiots starting fires on moorland/mountains rsouls (misspelling deliberate). Nice trip out for one decent weather Atb
I was struck by how young they looked, and the last couple looked really knackered. The moon was very impressive, I had never thought about moonrise before but will look out for it now. Over Mallam Cove - that must have been amazing.
The walk from llyn y fan fawr down to the road.. I get off path accidentally EVERY SINGLE TIME despite having done it a dozen times. It’s impossible to stick to the paths there I swear
My Strava track is more than a bit wiggly both out and back! Thanks for watching.
The tinitus going away is interesting. Blood pressure reducing as you calm, maybe changing something in your ears? 🤔 or you’re hearing electrical things when you’re off the mountain 🧐 “Probably a civvy” oh god those army exercises 😮
Not sure what it's all about, it's not stupidly loud but still really nice when it goes quiet. ATB
Loved the colours in the sky and that snow sounded very crunchy/icey. That must have been a real cold pitch up and that wind must have been baltic. I have been in Time lapse mode, photo mode and spent 10 minutes filming in the inside of my Down jackets before with my GoPro, so I know where you are coming from. Oops indeed and spikes are a lifesaver in this weather and that looked just as cold in the morning as it must have been through the night, cheers Alan
Yes, made all those mistakes and more with the GoPro! It was around -3.5 most of the night and according to my Skywatch -10 wind-chill so, yeah, Baltic. IThanks so much for watching and commenting. ATB, Roger
Well, Roger. That made me thouroughly wistful. If we weren't going away I'd be running upstairs & packing the winter tent. Sigh. Lovely night out, really enjoyed it if a bit envious. Did you find your down bootie? 'bye for now! Sue 👍
Nope, the bootee must be flying around the lower reaches of Fan Fawr I guess. Only cheap ones luckily! Have a great trip wherever you're off to. ATB, Roger
Very nice Roger, I particularly liked watching it sitting in a centrally heated house 😂. I hope you found your missing down boottie. The minute I put anything down in my tent, it immediately goes missing.
Nope, no sign of the bootee - a new pair ordered today! I guess it's floating around Fan Fawr somewhere. I seem to have forgotten half of my tent routines whilst I had the enforced break working on the house - tent was an absolute tip on this one. 😂 Thanks for watching John. ATB
Watching this in my tent, camping in snow just below crybin 🙏🏻
Have a good night!
I’m 61 and absolutely love my camping and find you very inspiring mate, cooking, setting up and what you use.👍
That's very kind. I don't always cook meals like that but it's fun to try new things. Thanks for watching.
10 years and I've not mastered everything that I should/shouldn't be doing. But looked amazing, cold and freezing but the food looked lovely <3 You definitely need a backing track for your vids, just for the silent bits... <3
Yeah, very cold. This year I'm hoping to up the quality of the filming. Started using two cameras a bit (GoPro and phone).
@@thewanderingforester I've moved my editing to DaVinci now...
That decent didnt look nice in that weather! Stunning spot, pitched there last summer. How are you getting on with the featherlight cone now mate?
The cone is pretty efficient at boiling water and I think safe inside the vestibule because no flame gets outside the cone at all. Putting together was a pain but I've found if you weave the two halves together flat first and then make into the cone it's easier to assemble.
Nice winter wild camp. Thank you for sharing. Take care 👍
Thanks, it's been quite a while since I camped in snow.
Great stuff Roger. I like the tent looks strong. I think I might wait for a solid version. That red fuel dispenser is quite heavy. I use two 100 mill small plastic bottles. Much lighter. That said I don’t cook slap- up meals like you.😂I was in the Langdales this week just hiking in deep snow. Atb mate
Yes, I agree on the bottles, I'm always worried about not having enough fuel. I think I'm worrying too much. Thanks for watching.
It came over really well how much you enjoyed that camp Roger (the beacons looked fine in the snow ❄️) and that curry did look spot on mate 👌🏻 Nice save on the decent 🙏🏼 its always a faf to put spikes on for 10 or 20 yards Did you ever find your bootie?? ATB for 2025 Simon 🤠👍
Hi Simon, no there's no sign of the bootee, must have blown away when I moved the tent! Did enjoy the curry. ATB, Roger
Great fun watching this video! Great food cooked out on the hills too. Very happy I came across your channel! New sub from us👍🏻

Cheers Scott, Merry Christmas to you!
What a cracking night out in your new tent Roger, and a fabulous meal too. Sounds like you have some lovely plans for next year. Best wishes to you and Linda for the festive season 🎄
Thanks John. Needed that break after weeks (and weeks!) of house renovations. Best wishes, Roger
Merry Christmas Roger and Linda, great to catch up with you. I checked out your location and did walk by there a couple of years ago with my son in law. Yes I struggled with the stove too but have noticed it has developed a bit of memory in it’s shape and goes together a little easier, I’ve been very impressed how quick it boils Compared to my old fuel stove. Your new tent does look very good, I saw a couple of the x mids in real life and wasn’t keen. Happy new year Roger. 🍻🎄
I really like the space in the X-Dome but too early to tell that much about it despite seeing some "full reviews" on TH-cam. I'll probably stick to my other tents until the drafts coming through the mess are a bit warmer.😃 I am impressed with the stove once it's assembled, no doubt I'll get the knack with more uses. Merry Xmas to you and yours, thanks for the support this year. ATB, Roger
Great seeing you out again mate. Hope the house is all finished now. Have a great Xmas and New Year. Will have to arrange another camp out in the new year 👍🏻
Kitchen/Diner is done - just the 2nd Bedroom and Living Room to go, neither of which are much more than redecoration . (Thankfully!) Would be good to get together again sometime. Have good holiday season mate. ATB, Roger
Good to see you out, Roger. You can't beat cooking some real food on a camp, especially a Xmas dinner; I'm hoping to do the same on Boxing day. It would be great to see you walking the SWCP, it's a beautiful hike. All the best, and have yourself a great Christmas.
Thanks Ryan. Felt good to be out after so long, sometimes life has other plans than wild camping! We're hoping to get on the SWCP just after Easter when things open up again. Have a great Xmas - and a good camp on Boxing day. ATB, Roger
Best wishes for 2025! How do you rate the Dome 1?
Cheers. Too soon to say anything much about the tent. I was very impressed with the room in it, both floor size and the amount of headroom. Obviously very light, also easy to pitch and felt very solid once pegged out though the conditions didn't test it at all really. I bought it really for late Spring to early Autumn but couldn't resist taking it on this trip. Best wishes for the New Year - and a Happy Xmas!. ATB, Roger
Slurps and heavily microphoned up swallows really make my hackles rise 😂 All the best for 2025
Love the Santa hat Roger 😁 What a lovely way to enjoy Christmas dinner. And happy new tent.. not sure about the stove mind! Have a lovely Christmas & looking forward to seeing you both on the SW coast path. ATB! Sue
Yeah the stove is bit of a faff! First impressions of the tent are good but we'll see after a few nights. Have a great Xmas and New Year - looking forward to seeing what you get up to next year. ATB, Roger
Good to see you back on the hills Roger 👌🏻 new kit and a fab meal (now that is the way to have a Christmas 🎄 dinner) You and Linda have a great festive season mate 🤠👍🎄 ATB Simon
Thanks Simon. It was a bit better than a dehydrated one! Best seasonal wishes to you and yours.
its nice to see you back again my friend
Thanks Ian. Really good to get a night out at last.
Merry Christmas to you both, Thank you, for all your vlogs, producing and editing appreciated,
Many thanks for your support Christopher. Best of the season to you.
I find the stove very difficult to put together too. I’m assuming there is a knack but I’m yet to find it!
As you say there has to a trick there somewhere, maybe we'll find out one day. 😀
Nice hile and video 👍 😊
Thank you 👍 all the best for the holidays and New Year.
Nice one Rodger. I’m temped by the tent but hope they might bring out a ‘solid’ version. Looks able to take a beating and lightweight too. I can’t be bothered with haute cuisine it’s always a cheap Mac n cheese mug shot or pot noodle. A do admire your skills though. Atb
Thanks Pete. There is a solid version promised for next year I believe, also a 2P at some point. The meal was a bit of a departure from the norm to be honest but just thought it was a bit of fun. Thanks for supporting my little channel this year, ATB, Roger
My son contacted Dan and he said there is a solid coming out in the summer
