Breaststroke Blues

Before anybody says anything - I commend anybody swimming any stroke in any triathlon. I don't care if you do the doggypaddle. In fact, in my first few triathlons and even my first 70.3 I swam the breaststroke, and if that's what you're comfortable with, do it. But just be considerate to those around you and try not to slow them down or kick them. This video is a joke, and was a fun and hilario...

The main issue with the Drill log is that it tracks only time and distance. No stroke rate or swolf. I found that if I create a workout on my PC and upload to my watch and then do a workout as a swim activity it is much more accurate than just tracking a swim but it also captures all the useful swimming information. Also if you mark some set as a drill or kick set in your workout, it will automatically capture it as a drill log with proper lengths and times, which is very convenient.
Really good points.
You're slapping the water and over rotating
Thanks Andrew, that’s interesting, I was having problems connecting the ride I did to garmin connect.
Did it work?
Hi mate, can you share the comparison of each route between Desaru and Langkawi? thank you!
No problem! Here you go: I think the Langkawi swim is easier, as it's in a protected bay with calmer waters and there are no rocks on the beach like there can be in Desaru. In terms of bike, Desaru is quite a bit flatter - more like rolling hills while you could say that Langkawi has a few climbs. But overall, people really exaggerate the hills at Langkawi. It's 741m of elevation, but besides Datai at the beginning and then a few later in the end, it's mainly flat. The Langkawi course is only one lap (unless you're doing the full, then it's two). Desaru is around 500m of elevation I believe. It's mostly always rolling, so although they are small, they're constant. It's two laps. The run is where they really differ. Langkawi is totally flat (and boring, out by the airport). Desaru is hilly, and more scenic. Desaru has a bit more shade, but still not much. If you're a strong runner, you'll do better in Desaru, but if you're a strong hill climber, go for Langkawi. Of course, climates are basically the same. Hope this helps.
nope, not mine lol

What about whether? Humidity?
It’s super humid and of course hot. If you are not used to it, it will be difficult and if you are used to it, it will still be difficult, but at least you’ll be a little bit more acclimated. Furthermore, the run is Hayley so that exacerbates it. However, two of the four times I’ve done it, it has rained on the run a little bit so that helps.
a cheap pool noddle or bubble wrap works too
The depression may have been due to overtraining-induced low testosterone, high cortisol, adrenal burnout, etc.
What garmin type is ?
Garmin Forerunner 965
Do the animations for workout show on the forerunner 265?
@@PEACEofGOD2day Yes
Thanks man
I swam 5 lengths - bothe ways and I had registered that the pool was 20 meters. So I should have gotten 200 meters. However, I only got 80 meters. I clicked on the lap button each time I took one length (20 meters). So I don’t know why it didn’t calculate correctly.
Thanks for the reminder and this is good info!
Thanks! Happy training!
you're my inspiration!
exceptional work showing 🤙 When you do speedwork with 800 and so on.... how do you determine intensities, by pace (speed) or heart rate?
Personally, I do it by pace (based around lactate threshold). Athletes who are limited by high heart rate, however, may benefit more from using heart rate. For example, if you have a high heart rate in a race and that is your limiter (not pace - you can run faster but it'll further spike your heart rate), then you may be better off basing it on heart rate. Luckly, I don't have that problem, so I would like to improve my lactate threshold and build real speed, so that's what I base it around. Next question - how do we determine lactate threshold? haha
@IronmanHacks thank you 😊
And running on hard, unforgiving man made surfaces? How is that helping keep your body strong and unbroken? 🤷🏼♂️
Running on trails or grass is awesome, for the reduced impact and increased strength and stability it builds from the unevenness. I'm always worried I'll twist an ankle though on the trails. The incessant pounding from running on hard surfaces (man-made or not) can certainly lead to injuries and most distance runners have experienced them, me included. However, it can also help build bone strength and density (reference: tinyurl.com/knvss2xf). But again, injury is so real and lots of beginning runners don't think they'll get injured, when many will.
Thank you, coach
Any time

Can we add strides in Maff method and how much? Thanks.
Thank you for the tips and being straight to the point! Heading to my first race with this goggles tomorrow and this video helps tremendously!!
Awesome what race?
I'm just worried TP will jump in cost... Made the same move.
That’s actually really good point. When I canceled my Zwift subscription I filled in the box to say I’m moving to TrainingPeaks virtual. Maybe this will make them more competitive. If I remember correctly, Zwift increased their prices earlier this year and now who knows they may drop them?
I hope so too... But I think it's in vain. It's so rare companies walk back price hikes. More likely that they add some killer feature else I think everyone will move to tp (since they're already on it) or even mywhoosh which had killer graphics.
Agree totally
How do you calibrate and get your bearings for a whole race - say if you have to swim in a rectangle. From the beach I am assuming you can only see the bearing for the first leg, what happens when you turn and then turn again?
You just always observe the bearing you're headed. So, if your first buoy is at 90 degrees, as you swim, the 90 will be more or less lined up with the buoy. Then when you turn, and you see the 2nd buoy, it may be at 170 degrees, so you just keep swimming towards 170. It's simpler than it sounds.
Holy uncanny valley. Peep the guy finishing the run with the aero helmet on. 😭
A $1000 watch that can't use GPS to evaluate movement direction and detect the turn around points! Pool Swim doesn't use GPS - it uses the break in your stroke pattern to recognize the turn around points. Then it uses the pool length to calculate distance. Swimming should at least try to use the GPS to figure out distance. It could use GPS to evaluate movement direction and detect the turn around points then calculate distance based on the pool length.
Is it possible to add interval running workout in Garmin Swim 2?
Yep, here you go: www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/garminswim2/EN-US/GUID-CD3DA8F0-7D1D-47CE-9EF2-206D4829F07F.html
Born to run!😊
many people brag about their zone 2 workouts on strava
this is not true, "drill log" is for all kind of exercises like only legs or only drills with one hand etc., so you can register exercise distance because garmin can recognise only full swimming style in the pool... not exercise, this is not a calibration thing,
You're right, it's not a calibration thing. But it will give you accurate distances and subsequently accurate paces.
@@IronmanHacks what you talking about is a critical swim speed (CSS)
Bricks are a cornerstone of good triathlon training.
Indeed!
Also, integrated and one-piece cockpits are a pain in the posterior if you fly anywhere. They make it really difficult take down the bars to make the box or bag a bit slimmer. Plus, if they stick out, your shifters can get dinged ... another surprise when you arrive 🤣 Cheers
Yep I know what you mean. I'm always worried my shifters will get depressed during travel and the Di2 battery will then get drained. So I carry the Di2 charger with me just in case.
Strava lol
If you were always an athlete VO2max will go down but not if you were never an athlete and you start running, hiking, biking, etc after 50 it might just go UP.
I love listening to Joe. I’m 68, inspired by him , and a rider
Yes, he's great!
Spot on! It's always a good idea. Otherwise you risk arriving somewhere with a busted bike.
Exactly!
I am going to try to glue a mini compass(12mm) on the inside of my goggles. 4 euro's on Aliexpress. Good idea?
I love this!!! 😂
Any update on this? 🎉😮😅
hahah yes and I can tell you that it didn't work :/ It's way too close to your eye to see it nicely. But it was still a fun thing to try out
Thank you for the review. I have had mine for a year. But I have somewhat contrary experience. The stock plans are ok, but you really need a coach to know what drills to do. You need to do drills correct your faults but goggles don't replace video coaching. The headcoach is not as great as made out as. The screen is hard to match while your rotating. The Form score is not that useful since strongly tied to pace, and the pace is not well corelated to training zones. The Training Peaks sync is good but not perfect. For example, drills and other notes from the coach workouts on TP don't make it across and require manual edits. The Zones do not seem to adjust for pools of different sizes. I swim in both 25m and 25yd pools and the goal pace does not adjust. Problems: 1. Fogs up, and won't last. Goggles for me last 6 months before anti-fog is gone, but that is problem with the price of Form. 2. The fit is ok, but sometimes leaks for me. 3. The new swim straight is a cool idea, but since you head is moving while swimming is actually less useful than pictured.
Valid points, and yes, quite contrary. I don't have any fogging issues (also a year). Fit is more of a personal thing, so harder to judge. And your last point about Swim Straight isn't how I've experienced it: Your head is moving but the bearing will not really move, and I have not had such issues. It's massively useful!
People should brag on Strava about completing faster times with the lowest possible heart rate. That way they can still express high competitiveness but be training in the right way.
Personally, I find staying strictly in Zone 2 is not that easy unless I am constantly checking HR and power. Typically, I train alone and ride or run or swim at what feels easy and at a pace that won't gas me by the end of a workout. I live in a very hilly area, so staying in zone 2 is challenging while climbing on a bike or running up these steep hills. Walking or grinding at a very low cadence does work but is annoying since rhythm is interrupted. Anyway, I appreciate all the podcasts about low HR training.
Thanks for the comment. I get bored in Z2 but also love it for the relative rest.
One negative that you didn't mention, but I think is fairly obvious to anyone who has tried them - the field of view is really restrictive. This isn't too much of an issue if you have a lane to yourself, but if you are swimming with others around you, it becomes a real impediment to avoiding confusion and risks of coliding into others. It can be quite disconcerting swimming with such restricted peripheral vision (side to side and forward)
Hmm. I don’t really feel that way compared to other goggles…It may depend on what you’re used to.
Do you need reading glasses? I’m wondering it the display is too close to my eyes so I won’t be able to focus.
I do. But in my case, it is perfectly clear. I can’t quite explain this. Maybe you can borrow a pair from somebody? And test it.
I have a strong prescription in both eyes including astigmatism (ie a spherical and cylindrical correction) and I can read the screen absolutely perfectly. I also have no idea how it works so well.
I'm reviewing the 1050 also and there's a ridiculous difference in dark or indoor conditions but in direct sunlight it's not so clear. In fact, I'd give the edge to the 1040 in really sunny conditions. Nice clip! 🙌
Good insight!
Gummy Berry? But yeah I tasted the gel, it tastes great..only a little challenging to have it on the go while riding.. maybe cos I am not that skillful.
haha yeah Gummy Berry maybe. You need two hands to open the gel so not that easy on the bike. But they taste great and they're substantial.
Strava. I used to be embarrassed if I'd post a ride under 200w's average due to ego. In 2 to 3months in summer when fit 200w's is in my zone 2 so all good. For most of the rest of the year zone 2 tops out at around 180watts so an "easy" 200w ride is anything but. Sometimes I'd be doing 100% effort in the last hour of a 3hr ride, with legs burning trying to keep my average above 200w's lol Pretending I was on an endurance ride. So stupid!
Hahah you’re not the only one. 😅
Zone 2 training worked for him doesn't mean it will work for everyone
I don’t think any endurance athletes would disagree with the effectiveness of zone two training
Be careful if on a high dose of Blood Pressure meds. ... My heart wouldn't go over 120 when my GP put me on a high dose. Usually get into 150s easy. The drug was fighting me ! Always use fitness watches to monitor stuff. And if you're gonna take up cycling or running... go to the gym first and talk to a physio. Your knees will thank me ! 😂
Wonderful video except... of course, there's an except 🙄. For my own experience, Joe Friel is wrong when he says it's not until you get into your 50s typically that you realize I could use a little bit more fitness here. And now it's too late. A year ago I was 61 and obese. Modified my diet and steadily added exercise. Now, I'm 5 lbs short of a 25 BMI, my resting heart rate is down 15 bpm, and my VO2 max is up 5. Sure, I'd be even better off if I'd started years earlier; however, I was so far out of shape that I didn't just slow age related decline, I actually improved significantly and hope to continue improving for a while. I believe many are in the same situation that I've been in.
Amazing.
Just turned 53 been in competitive sport since i was 8 years old. The day I can’t challenge myself anymore will be my final day on my journey through this life.
Love this perspective
The ‘mistake’ was the potato not the steak. There’s no dietary science that can prove carbs are a necessary component of nutrition - period.
One thing we do know is that during workouts and races carbs are the only thing you need and you have to have them. Not fat. Not protein.
@@IronmanHacks That too however can also depend on the type of race. There are keto only athletes, including Triathletes, and many carnivore diet adapted people have no problems with the energy.
Research now conclusively finds if over 50 do NOT exercise at max heart rate and intensity more than 20 percent of any workout.. less even. Irreversible heart damage occurs. This is a valid researched finding. I am a psychologist ex pro racer and research methodologist. I follow these guidelines as a 75 year old athlete.
