Breaststroke Blues
Before anybody says anything - I commend anybody swimming any stroke in any triathlon. I don't care if you do the doggypaddle.
In fact, in my first few triathlons and even my first 70.3 I swam the breaststroke, and if that's what you're comfortable with, do it.
But just be considerate to those around you and try not to slow them down or kick them.
This video is a joke, and was a fun and hilarious AI project.
And here's an article I wrote on how to start swimming the crawl if you're still learning, and you want to transition from the breaststroke: ironmanhacks.com/breaststroker-heres-how-to-go-freestyle/

    this is not true, "drill log" is for all kind of exercises like only legs or only drills with one hand etc., so you can register exercise distance because garmin can recognise only full swimming style in the pool... not exercise, this is not a calibration thing,

    Also, integrated and one-piece cockpits are a pain in the posterior if you fly anywhere. They make it really difficult take down the bars to make the box or bag a bit slimmer. Plus, if they stick out, your shifters can get dinged ... another surprise when you arrive 🤣 Cheers

    Thank you for the review. I have had mine for a year. But I have somewhat contrary experience. The stock plans are ok, but you really need a coach to know what drills to do. You need to do drills correct your faults but goggles don't replace video coaching. The headcoach is not as great as made out as. The screen is hard to match while your rotating. The Form score is not that useful since strongly tied to pace, and the pace is not well corelated to training zones. The Training Peaks sync is good but not perfect. For example, drills and other notes from the coach workouts on TP don't make it across and require manual edits. The Zones do not seem to adjust for pools of different sizes. I swim in both 25m and 25yd pools and the goal pace does not adjust. Problems: 1. Fogs up, and won't last. Goggles for me last 6 months before anti-fog is gone, but that is problem with the price of Form. 2. The fit is ok, but sometimes leaks for me. 3. The new swim straight is a cool idea, but since you head is moving while swimming is actually less useful than pictured.

    • @IronmanHacks
      @IronmanHacks 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Valid points, and yes, quite contrary. I don't have any fogging issues (also a year). Fit is more of a personal thing, so harder to judge. And your last point about Swim Straight isn't how I've experienced it: Your head is moving but the bearing will not really move, and I have not had such issues. It's massively useful!

    Personally, I find staying strictly in Zone 2 is not that easy unless I am constantly checking HR and power. Typically, I train alone and ride or run or swim at what feels easy and at a pace that won't gas me by the end of a workout. I live in a very hilly area, so staying in zone 2 is challenging while climbing on a bike or running up these steep hills. Walking or grinding at a very low cadence does work but is annoying since rhythm is interrupted. Anyway, I appreciate all the podcasts about low HR training.

    One negative that you didn't mention, but I think is fairly obvious to anyone who has tried them - the field of view is really restrictive. This isn't too much of an issue if you have a lane to yourself, but if you are swimming with others around you, it becomes a real impediment to avoiding confusion and risks of coliding into others. It can be quite disconcerting swimming with such restricted peripheral vision (side to side and forward)

    Strava. I used to be embarrassed if I'd post a ride under 200w's average due to ego. In 2 to 3months in summer when fit 200w's is in my zone 2 so all good. For most of the rest of the year zone 2 tops out at around 180watts so an "easy" 200w ride is anything but. Sometimes I'd be doing 100% effort in the last hour of a 3hr ride, with legs burning trying to keep my average above 200w's lol Pretending I was on an endurance ride. So stupid!

    Wonderful video except... of course, there's an except 🙄. For my own experience, Joe Friel is wrong when he says it's not until you get into your 50s typically that you realize I could use a little bit more fitness here. And now it's too late. A year ago I was 61 and obese. Modified my diet and steadily added exercise. Now, I'm 5 lbs short of a 25 BMI, my resting heart rate is down 15 bpm, and my VO2 max is up 5. Sure, I'd be even better off if I'd started years earlier; however, I was so far out of shape that I didn't just slow age related decline, I actually improved significantly and hope to continue improving for a while. I believe many are in the same situation that I've been in.

    Last I checked about a month ago, at least in the UK, they've reduced the free trial to 2 months only. Apologies if someone else has posted this. I also feel this has to be said, why is the sighting a premium feature? Imagine if Garmin charged you to use a feature already inbuilt in your Fenix (say sleep coach, or whatever), and these are features I use every day! It's quite an unsavoury direction some of these companies are taking. Currently, I'm considering the Finis Smart Goggle which - for now - is the opposite of this in that it's aimed at pool swims, but Finis is considering adding openwater features without the life time subscription.

    Garmin is a GPS tracking watch right? I feel the reason why all of these Garmin watches are sooo woeful at getting an accurate distance of your pool swim is that they use other metrics to try and calculate distance. That is the failure. Let the GPS calculate the distance Garmin!! I've been swimming with Garmin watches for over 10 years. I have swam 1km sessions in the same pool for over 500 times and the watch has NEVER gotten the distance correct even ONCE.

    • @IronmanHacks

      Kind of correct but I think if you don't make any movements it perceives to be a new lap, this is the best way to measure and pace a workout. The lap hack I give is also valid. But GPS is always off, especially swimming where it can't get a signal when your arm is underwater...

    Good day, I am concerned about the quality of distance counting during the "pool swimming" activity with the new Fenix 7x Pro Solar Sapphire... Fenix 7X do not correctly recognize my swimming style - crawl - freestyle, while fenix 6x pro recognize every length correctly as freestyle... Of course, my swimming style is still the same and has not changed in any way during the change of watches. Furthermore, Fenix 7X calculates pool lengths quite badly: sometimes they add an extra 25-75m, once they even added +125m... I turned on the circuit detection for 100 meters after 4 lengths (25 meter pool) while thoroughly checking my technique and turns, I made absolutely no mistakes and always counted much more before finishing 100m. Miscounting almost always happens with each new swim interval... This way, after finishing the swim, I have swum about +-500 meters by wrong measurement, which is pretty crazy! I also tried resetting the watch to factory settings and checking the enabled function - shot detection - ON. Problem still the same... In the past, when using the watch: Garmin Fenix 6x PRO Sapphire, the pool distance calculation and style detection were perfectly fine with a maximum deviation of 25-70m.

      That’s fine I think. I’m exactly the same. When I do 180 I’m very close to my marathon race pace. This is how I would like it to be. As opposed to not being able to do 180 at race pace. This means in the majority of my runs, which are zone two slow runs. I am only going up to around 170. And I think that’s OK. Sounds like that’s probably the same for you.

      During endurance activities this is most practical and is not even questioned by anyone (drinking carbs)

    Do you have to charge after every swim? Assume 45 minutes of swimming.....

      Nope, not even close. The battery lasts 16 hours they say, so many swims! Love this.

    interestinly enough they don't recommend over 3 servings in one day. Did you experience any heart palpitations?

      @IronmanHacks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm pretty sure every carb / sugar brand would have to say that, probably for regulatory reasons. But if you're an endurance athlete burning hundreds of calories per hour, that's meaningless. If you had to restrict it to 3 servings a day the product would be pretty much useless.

    Hi I used them today for the first time. On the way out it worked great [30°] on the way back calibration was off... should have been 0° and it set me at 30°. Here is my major objection... is there a way to eliminate or at least adjust the "sight for safety" popup? VERY annoying Thanks Stephen Ps. Ive got a tri this weekend -- Don't do anything new on race day!!!!! I've made that mistake a time or two😂

      I don’t think there’s a way to turn that off except to actually sight. It is kind of annoying, but it is also how we should be swimming so I think it’s OK.

      Thanks for the reply. What I'd like is to adjust from every 20/30 seconds to 2 minutes. That way it confirms the data reading

    I think of it like this. When I was younger my 'engine' was like a 3ltr car nowadays my engine is like a Fiat Panda. I still go, just a bit slower than before. This interview should be seen by more people over 50. I summited Kilimanjaro in 4 days in 2022, nothing special about that except I was 70 when I did it. The only thing I would add to this great advice, be active but also get outside of your comfort zone in the process!!

    We are a minority if you fit after 50. Im in my fifties and fitter than most 20-30 year olds. Training takes effort and im sorry to say too many people dont like to put the effort in. Lazy society. But hey they make me stand out so what i say to my coworkers at work who make fun of me because im fit. " Just keep watching Netflix and laying on the couch - but the only way to be truly comfortable is to make yourself uncomfortable a few times a week".
