Tips and ideas for the minimalist traveler. Be it backpacking or car camping, things I've worked out over years of cheap travel.
1969 Dodge Xplorer21 Camper Van
December 2021 I found a listing for an old camper on Facebook marketplace. The photos weren't the best but I recognized it. It had been up for sale over the last few years, this time at a price that made sense.
Video includes a slideshow from the first year's travels and a quick walk-through tour.

I think I saw you in Catalina AZ at ACE hardware today 1/26/25. What a beautiful rig. The Grand-Pappy of all modern camper vans !
That was me, always picking up parts to keep it on the road.
You should patent your invention!
Ha! At the end of the day it's just a drip pan.
I put one on a 20 pounder and leave it on for a week at a time in my trailer. perfect
I've actually upgraded to an Olympian Wave heater, no carbon monoxide issues. Still keep the windows cracked.
Yes this is great
It supposed to cover the sunlight not the opposite 😂
It was Totally Rad to meet you and your exceptional Xplorer.
Good to meet you, see you out on the road.
Dodge vans are just a thing of beauty. They always remind me of the vehicle of the future in the past. My family owned a motor home dealership when i was a kid. So my childhood was spent at Rv shows and camping expos. What a great childhood experience. This van caught my eye because we are the same age. Its Looking like the van is in better shape! Lol
Thanks! I always wonder how many lives this van lived before I bought it.
You are a genuis, I'm building my own house and need protection for rain,, Thank you !!!
Does the valve you added at the end of the hose where it connects to the propane tank allow you to regulate the flow of gas into the heater and thus the heat output? If so that would be great! I find that the heat is far too much in many circumstances and I'd prefer to be able to run it at maybe 25% of the standard "one speed" setting that is built into the unit.
Sadly, it doesn't. The heater just turns off.
What's the or brand of that suction cup?
There's a few different brands on Amazon. Suction Mount - amzn.to/3OzGHvZ
What are the correct names of all the parts you used please? Thanks.
What solar generator is that? The Amazon link is dead
It's long been discontinued. A few companies sold it most commonly Rockpals.
Awesome idea......Take care, Bluefin
Easy. Brilliant
Chromed cop wheels w/trim rings & the vented caps...sharp. What do you have for brakes & powertrain?
Good eye. 318 and disc brake conversion. At 5500 pounds she still doesn’t stop fast.
Genius I must say
Thanks!

Bought my set for 20 bucks on aliexpress and its awesome
Propane is heavier than air. That's why they always have the burners higher.
Nice! Mr. Heater should hire you to design a replacement.
the fuel line Mr Heater makes for their products is "oil free" and won't clog your gas orifices according to them. Good hack, but why not just make a more stable base instead? Thanks for the video.
Has anyone tried this with the Buddy Golf Cart heater? The golf cart heater looks like it has a flat base that would possibly require no sawing into the stove drip pan.
Should be obvious but the tank should be turned or screwed off before you turn the heater off to burn the fuel in the line.
Great idea!
Thanks for the video, I bought that fan Be quiet! Pure wings2 140mm But I want to use it for my mini camper There is 4 wire one + one - and two F , I tried different ways doesn’t work Please tell me how to install it , thanks
Awesome vid! Great thinking! I'll likely adopt this mod or something like it. You got a new subscriber! Thanks again!!
Two recommendations; first I would suggest you use the metal zip ties as the plastic ties break down and weaken over time. Second, you're exposing that rubber hose to high pressure propane which can leach out the oils within the rubber and foul up the Oxygen Depleation Sensors on the Little Buddy. Use the recommended filter.
Hello! I was wondering what filter you are referring to. Do you think you could please provide you a link or a brand name maybe? Sorry I am a bit green when it comes to thus stuff. Thanks in advance!
A filter is not necessary if you use a Mr Heater hose. They are designed to not leach oils.

@binaryflat Filters are far easier to find and likely cheaper than purchasing a Mr Heater hose. Many hardware stores sell the filters but I've never seen the Mr Heater hose also available.
Great idea but you need a filter to run with that hose
This is so clever and exactly the simple solution I was hoping to find. Thank you sir!
Enjoy!
Really good idea! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video , I like your fan , a question for you ! I bought a regular 12 volt fan , but takes 20 watts and makes a lot of noise, but works good, about that computer fan looks like perfect . Is it blowing enough for night time when your are lay down sleeping?
It's not a forceful breeze. It's just a light wind that helps keep me cool. For me, the biggest selling point was the lack of noise. I do a lot of urban camping, being able to hear what's going on outside the car is important.
I agree with it being top heavy, good fix, I'm not as handy so I wound up duct taping the plastic base to a concrete tile.
Whatever it takes to keep that silly thing from tipping over.
Thanks for the video.. although i did everything you said.. ordered everything but it didn't work as smoothly for me.. but fixed mine to where i only had to buy a 3/8 to 3/8 male to female elbow and the 1"-20 male throw away adapter fitting... and that was it.. it's been working good for 4 days now.. no problems. Sits sturdy in the floor.. so basically i didn't need all the other elbows as in the video.. however thanks to your concept it really had helped us to use the little buddy for efficiently directly from the bigger tank.. also temperatures are low as 25 degrees but im able to sleep comfortably without feeling like I'm going to run out of propane
Glad to hear you found a solution that works. I may have over engineered it a little, but that's half the fun.
@PerfectlyGoodNobody yeah it was but thanks for the re-configuration
Excellent idea! Thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful!
love this design and the view is just magnificent
Thank you so much!
Thanks for for making it so simple and removal. I will definitely try this method due to lack of roof rack as well 🙌🏼
You are welcome!
The valve that you put on the tank side could be used to reduce the amount of heat which will be really handy.
I'm not sure the heaters are designed to work with variable propane.
2023 do you still have this beast ?
Still on the road.
You can buy suction roof cups with hooks on for this purpose. Or just peg down to ground behind van. I use ratchet straps instead of guy ropes. 😊
Can't you just put a couple of small sandbags around the base so it won't tip over?
I suppose so. But in a camper, less stuff is always better.
My interest in October is undiminished. Michael, L.A.
Wow!❤❤❤❤❤
I love that boat. I love the flush deck, and I'm dreaming of exploring the Canadian West coasts thousands of islands and majestic inlets as a soon to be retired 55 yr old. I am in the market for a sailboat but I'm not a sailor yet and I think this boat might require too much learning routine maintenance for a novice. I am too afraid of making a bad choice to embrace the opportunity that this beautiful boat presents. I hope that a capable sailor and sailboat tender will find you. Best wishes.
Thanks! She would be a lot of boat for a first boat. Hope you find something that suits your needs.
I built your Element in 58 seconds at the Honda East Liberty Plant near Marysville, Ohio. The rear end is the old Subaru Brat tooling. My job was the dashboard and center console .
Wow that is in great shape i'd love to own one but they are rare and when you find them they are in rough shape . does it have AC i see solar panels on top very cool .
No air conditioning… yet. I did put solar on there, great addition.
Wow! Absolutely fabulous!
Thank you! Cheers!
How many amps does that fan pull? Should show on ur battery pack
Not sure, my battery pack doesn't show amp draw. But it's certainly very low.
Looks amazing Actually made the 69th like 😅
Well you don't see this everyday, or week, or month, or year, or lifetimes.
