      Very nice work, thank you. When I was about 16 going on 17 my dad took me to the Cape to see Apolllo 13. We were primarlly there to see the college I was about to attend in the fall. We took a tour of the VAB and I saw the Saturn V standing there at the pad from the VAB in all of its glory. I remember telling my dad I had a bad feeling about the mission. He asked me why and I said: " because of the number thirteen". He said nothing about my bad omen.
      While I was a student at Florida Tech (FIT) in 1972 we flew my buddy's dad's Cessna 172 at night up the Indian River and circled the small restricted area surrounding the Cape at 2000 ft. We saw what I believed was Apollo 16 standing at the gantry at night all lit up with floodlights. It was a beautiful sight and I remember it to this day. Those were some very interesting years. The days when Star Trek was being played as TV reruns. Thanks for the very nice work.

    My Dad started at NASA with Mercury and he retired 6 months before Challenger blew up. He was one of the engineers around the table for Apollo 13 figuring how to make the square filter match the round one! The Man …..former B17 pilot in WWII…..would race me…his slide rule vs me on my TI-80…..you’re smiling right now aren’t you? I’m 63, proud to be half the man he was….can never fill those shoes. It’s ok. Nobel prize? Every single one of the 14,000 people who made President Kennedy’s directive become reality! One small step…..one giant leap!

    I saw Apollo 17 launch shortly after midnight back in December 1972, it was a clear night in Port Richey Florida, over 150 miles away from the cape. When it launched, it was like the sun coming up, the midnight sky was BLUE. We watched the first stage seperate, and it flew out over the Atlantic until it was just a white dot. I was 13 years old, but it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for your comment. I figured that out when I completed a week or so of modeling the F1s based on pictures and drawings. Then I ran into the Apollo launch video showing the F1s from below the launch pad. It was a disappointing find to realize that I had about a weeks worth of effort for parts the viewer would never see. And a disappointment to realize that I thought I was done with the F1s…but I was not. In the end, I decided to let them run naked. 🙂

    That was from 1961 Alan Shepherd in a little Mercury Capsule going 100 miles up and 300 miles down range to 1969, three men going 250, 000 miles to the moon and back!!! in 8 years from can we go to space???... to planting the US Flag on the moon and bringing back moon rocks. Most American homes had Black and White TV, one phone on the wall. Only half the homes were airconditioned and in most car's Air Conditioning was because of a kit put on to a car once it was purchased. My Father's home in 1969 had a phone, but it was a shared party line, we had black and white TV and we didn't have Air Conditioning. A Computer was unknown in the home and Engineering Students carried a slide rule. Most homes had a live in cooking mother, a working WWII veteran father and most families went to Church at least once a week. We had a lot less economically and we were a lot happier. Most people came from something they could look back at their shoulder at called a two parent home!!! I think we have lost something 60 years later.

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep…I am aware. That’s what happens when you spend a couple of weeks modeling the F1 engine, based on pictures and drawings…then discover real launch video showing the insulation. At that point I did not have the motivation to cover up my work. If I had known from the start, I could have cut my work by 2/3s for sure.

      @@opieswenson 1. This must have taken you months. We are so impressed by and thankful for the effort you put into this, Andrew. Fyi, I go as far back as seeing the A. 11 and 12(?) landings live. 2. I've always been so awed by the beastly power of the F1; by designation and reputation, IT rightly IS the 'Formula 1' of all r-motors! And an honorable mention to the fellow 60s-tech of the -99 in the X-15.
      3. What's your favorite plane? Be mindful that the black project RS's that have since replaced the RS-71 (RS is the correct and original designation, as our worst president ever, LBJ, screwed up the letter order in a speech) do exist, we just can't get much in the way of confirmation.
      4. Are you a fan of US black projects, such as the Tier 3 "Flying Triangles," the rumored TR-3B Astra being the most famous, and the TR-3A Black Manta? (The -3A is supposedly subsonic, and it or something resembling it was sighted at an RAF base in the early 90s.)

      @@brianjob3018 1. Thanks much for your comments. I started do learn Blender last October following Andrew Prices donut tutorials on TH-cam. I started building the models in Jan this year.
      2. F1 is an awesome piece of engineering. Currently SpaceX and NASA favor smaller engines and gain the required thrust by having more of them.
      3. As a Naval Flight Officer and Naval Test Pilot School graduate, I have flown a lot of military aircraft (Navy, Airforce, Marines). The most fun flying machine…F16. The best “ got war airplane”….F15E (unfortunately can’t get it aboard the boat. Biggest plane I flew….B-1B and P3. My normal plane which I also love is the F14A with is the plane I have the most hours in….but I also have a bunch of time in the F14D, F14B upgrade, and a unique F14 that as only used in flight test (it was a F14A with F14B upgrade avionics…..or I guess you could call it an F14B upgrade with Pratt engines)

      Yes...lot of time and effort. Last October I became interested in learning Blender having spent the prior year putting several apps in the Apple App Store. You can see my first animation test case on youTube with a scify spaceship. The LUT probably took the most time, and I would definitely build it differently next time. For the most part, I would build ALL of my models differently if I did it again. As you get your hands dirty, you end up learning new and better ways to do things.

    One small step for Man and one giant leap for Mankind the late Neil Armstrong.
    Neil Alden Armstrong (August 5, 1930 - August 25, 2012) was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer who in 1969 became the first person to walk on the Moon. He was also a naval aviator, test pilot, and university professor.
    Armstrong was born and raised in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He entered Purdue University, studying aeronautical engineering, with the U.S. Navy paying his tuition under the Holloway Plan. He became a midshipman in 1949 and a naval aviator the following year. He saw action in the Korean War, flying the Grumman F9F Panther from the aircraft carrier USS Essex. After the war, he completed his bachelor's degree at Purdue and became a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) High-Speed Flight Station at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He was the project pilot on Century Series fighters and flew the North American X-15 seven times. He was also a participant in the U.S. Air Force's Man in Space Soonest and X-20 Dyna-Soar human spaceflight programs.
    Armstrong joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in the second group, which was selected in 1962. He made his first spaceflight as command pilot of Gemini 8 in March 1966, becoming NASA's first civilian astronaut to fly in space. During this mission with pilot David Scott, he performed the first docking of two spacecraft; the mission was aborted after Armstrong used some of his re-entry control fuel to stabilize a dangerous roll caused by a stuck thruster. During training for Armstrong's second and last spaceflight as commander of Apollo 11, he had to eject from the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle moments before a crash.
    On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Apollo 11 Lunar Module (LM) pilot Buzz Aldrin became the first people to land on the Moon, and the next day they spent two and a half hours outside the Lunar Module Eagle spacecraft while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the Apollo Command Module Columbia. When Armstrong first stepped onto the lunar surface, he famously said: "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." It was broadcast live to an estimated 530 million viewers worldwide. Apollo 11 was a major U.S. victory in the Space Race, by fulfilling a national goal proposed in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy "of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth" before the end of the decade. Along with Collins and Aldrin, Armstrong was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Richard Nixon and received the 1969 Collier Trophy. President Jimmy Carter presented him with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, he was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1979, and with his former crewmates received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009.
    After he resigned from NASA in 1971, Armstrong taught in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cincinnati until 1979. He served on the Apollo 13 accident investigation and on the Rogers Commission, which investigated the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. In 2012, Armstrong died due to complications resulting from coronary bypass surgery, at the age of 82.

      Thanks for your comment! As the series progressed, I added more detail to the interior. My translunar coast video is the Apollo 11 video with the most interior detail…and shot with the cycles engine. That detailed interior carried over to my Skylab series. I have Apollo 15 part 1 available with a working waist restraint (and astronauts) in the LM. Part 2 will be deploying the rover.

The second reason is that you can get some great video online on the exterior and interior of Orion. While there is some color TV of the Apollo interior, it was not that great and has faded with time.

      Thanks much for watching and your comment. I have found that in researching for my models that there were all sorts of configurations on just about everything which sometimes makes it somewhat difficult to get things right. For example, all the manned Apollo missions launched with 8 ullage motors on the S1C except for A15 which launched only with 4. They went back to 8 since A15 stages almost ran into each other. For the SIVB, there were initially 3 ullage motors which can be seen on AS202 (unmanned) here:th-cam.com/video/xMr_AGJprrg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kHBHpxautNhpDhZr
      But later flights had only 2 as can be seen in this drawing here: heroicrelics.org/info/s-ivb/s-ivb-v-overview.html

    I'm In absolute awe! I gave you a like, and I subscribed. It's really too bad I can't give you more than one like, Cause you would have a million. It's not only a beautiful video to me, but it also helped me out a great deal. I'm doing a huge project, not only in actual size, but in scope as well. I'm 3D printing the Saturn V, and the launch tower. The Saturn V is about 7 feet tall, and the Gantry is about 8 feet tall. I didn't scale it up this big, but I found it on Thingyverse already this large. That"s great for me cause I wanted to animate it quite a bit. I'm not going to have it lift off the pad, cause that's something i couldn't pull off. I am however going to have the swing arms move back, and a few other things. The gantry model as it is, is OK, but it was lacking detail. So I hunted down the "blueprints", and am able to give the gantry quite a bit more detail. Having said that, I was not sure about all the mechanical workings, and was not really looking forward to going through all that grainy TV footage to animate it correctly. Thankfully, you came along sir and did all that for me. I now have all that knowledge in this one SPECTACULAR video! Thank you so very much for all this hard work that you have done! As a resource. Also I used another model builders photos of his way better LUT model than mine. Where I put in enough detail in the LUT to make it look convincing, this model builder put in everything including the bathrooms. He probably had access to the full drawings.
      Here is Stuart Howes LUT
      www.turbosquid.com/Search/3D-Models/Lut

      Thanks much for watching and commenting. When you say technology, do you mean in 1969 or now? If 1969, cameras were terrible. If you mean why do I animate it is because it is just a hobby. I try to animate space related events that were difficult to see way back in 1969. One of the reasons I don't animate Space Shuttle or current space is because cameras have captured that kind of activity and animation won't be able to tell the story better than a high def camera.. Fun Fact: During the rocket hold down clamp release part you can actually see the camera E-8 housing...

    • @opieswenson
      @opieswenson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you saying that you can see the E-8 housing in my animation? I have a lot of cameras housings placed all over the tower based upon pictures. The E-8 camera took video at 500 FPS (th-cam.com/video/DKtVpvzUF1Y/w-d-xo.html). During my hold down clamp release, I am not pointing in the direction of where that view would be located. I checked my model, and I don't have a camera housing there. I searched online for the exact location of E-8, but the only references I could find in a quick search was that the E-8 housing was not actually located in that position....and may have been located inside the launch pad base pointed up at a quartz mirror. Regardless, please let me know what you are looking at----my animation or another video, I am interested. Funny thing though----as I was searching my model, I realized that my first stage fin markings did not render. So I fixed the model, but the current Part 1 does not show the proper fin markings.
