Your right about the silver wearing down after time. I’ve got a silver armour that’s an edc with a double jet flame in it and I’ve also got a handmade silver zippo that’s over 3 ounces with an arc plasma insert. The cam spring was starting to wear a groove in the lid so I had to stop using it. I’m gutted about that because it’ll only ever be an ornament. The zippo armour is easily scratched but zippos should look lived in. I don’t put it in the same pocket as coins or keys.

The little nubbins that put tension on the top are easy to fix, you need to bend their very ends inwards a little for better grip and "tighten" them (evenly bend them so the ends are closer together). To fix the flint problem, I shove in two flints at a time, also lasts longer. You can cannibalize flints from normal bic/whatever cheap plastic lighters if you're in need, probably even cheaper than zippo flints but works in a pinch. I fixed up a beat up pre1990 Streamline 6800 and works really well for the fact it has a frankenstein flint spring from 3 disposable lighters, the afformentioned nubbin fix, a wooden carved flint piston I did on a whim, another non original spring and a missing back cover flap for the wheel. Took some time to tune it up so everything is nice and snappy but I consumed a whole cricket flint over the day just playing with it and the nubbins didn't snap off, throws good sparks and feels nice except for the rust. The nubbin problem is really common, they probably didn't tension the lighter right at the factory or if they're used they probably just got overused, I made sure to lap the surfaces together (nubbin and hole) with some 2000ish grit lapping paste and they have yet to fail on me. Gonne order proper flints and some lighter fluid.

A silver one can be buffed back to new again by a jeweler with the right buffing machine and polish compound. A chrome plated one can't. I wish I had a nickel for every piece of jewelry I refurbished on my job over 25 years.

About buttons on "ears" of the hat. In 1970s there was designed special uniform which was thought to change standard M69 uniform in case of possible use of mass destruction weapons. It was called OKZK. Hat from the OKZK set had detachable cover which could cover head and face of the soldier. For winter period no such hat was designed, but they made such covers for ushanka. These buttons are there to hold two parts of the cover (one to each "ear")

Imcos we're a very cheap lighter made for the masses! They were the bic of their day? Ironically, they say the post-2012 ones from overseas are much better being made of stainless steel ! Obviously a zippo is going to be more reliable as there's a basic lighter with a simple insert that just works,as long as you stay away from the butane inserts!

I think High polish finishing is the best looking until I started touching it. I am only using 2 Zippo nowadays, one is a black crackle and the other is a pure white glowing in the dark. I remember getting one of these old models from a friend of my grandads who had settled here in the UK after ww2! It was in black with signs of use but was really nice ,he had flown with it and used to fly P47s on escort missions. I never have smoked but was only about 10 when he gave it to me ,mainly for scouting . I must have a good look through my old stuff and try and find it out as i see they go for ridiculous money nowadays!

I've got several pairs of them by now. A couple have spring assisted knives and I have one trench knife replica. I have a few classic pairs as well. I haven't left home without a pair of them in my pocket for about 12 years now or so. I live in Indiana so you can carry them lol. You can carry, switch blades or auto knives and no knife laws at all except ballistic knives and possibly throwing stars. As of like 2 years ago or so, we don't even need a permit anymore. I still have one, have for 13, 14 maybe 15 years now. The only thing we need is legal weed, but Illinois has legal weed, but it's hard to own a gun, can't carry it half the time or at all in the city. They can't carry pretty much anything but a Swiss army knife and even then it probably had to be a small one. They can't carry shit over there.
