Late Game Wars for Resources in Victoria 3: A Germany Let's Play with An Economist Plays
As the Zollverein struggles to meet its coal demands, untouched seams in Poland beckon to the Berlin government... but do we take them directly, or do we find a way to trap Russia and lock out other belligerents?

Autocratic Coup in Victoria 3: A Germany Let's Play with An Economist Plays

Just when I was despairing of ever getting rid of suffrage rights for my empire, the Junkers came forward with a most excellent proposal to completely subvert the national constitution with a coup d'etat. Of course I signed on for that! I may have liberalized in the early game, but there's plenty of time to enjoy the roll back of rights and liberties and look back in the direction of serfdom! M...

Ukraine has a huge portion of Russia's population, so they're always an excellent target to "liberate" if you want to cripple the motherland. Excellent strategy.
Yes, which is why it's good to have an interest there if one is hostile with Russia!
That hungarian enclave within your borders drives me nuts :D. Great playthrough!
I should have held on to it and then transferred it to "Austria" after making it a dominion... ah well, regrets!
Love the crafty Spanish war to get Poland, liberate Belarus, Ukraine and the Don Cossacks, truly some proper 19th century politicking. Once the infamy comes down a bit, could you perhaps pull the same play with Bengal? Maybe they've got an ally worth taking a large chunk out of for minor gains on the subcontinent? As for education, I think by this stage in history it's a worthwhile compromise with the more liberal minded. With it being a state institution, you would in theory have plenty of control over the curriculum, and you need literate people to work in your radio factories, operate tanks and dreadnoughts, and fly airplanes. Heck, even the newly conquered coal miners in Poland will need to know how to read to operate the machinery, and the TNT instructions! Anyway, any non-literate person would be exposed to some kind of liberal pirate radio, most certainly being broadcast in the Empire, so I say teach every child to love the Kaiser, so long as it's in German.
love from germany for not playing the brown empire. we had enaugh brown in our history
Indeed!
It's good that TH-cam offered me another of your series. And even though you have committed such an obscenity with my country. I'll probably squeeze the bell so I don't miss the sequel.
You should go for China like the Europeans did in real-life. They have more coal, more grain, more gold, and more resources overall than any other country You can also go for Africa and maybe industrialize it since they have so many resources
I just want to point out that just because Germany has a public education system doesn’t make it any less conservative or autocratic. Education systems are ideological constructs in of themselves and I can imagine a curriculum geared towards creating the ideal German citizen-subject that also gets Germany the technical basis on which to compete with and dominate the other great powers
But the idea of education for *all* is something of a liberal notion, when compared to offerings and expectations under serfdom.
@@An_Economist_Plays True, but nationalism was once a liberal idea and is now considered a thoroughly conservative one. Liberal and conservative are not fixed poles but change in relation to society. I think it’s more useful to think of them as mindsets then necessarily tied to any specific policies - conservatism is about protecting hierarchy while liberalism values individual freedoms
The presence of a public education system in Germany does not inherently absolve the country of conservative or autocratic tendencies. Education, as an ideological tool, can be shaped to serve the interests of the state, and in this case, it is conceivable that the German curriculum is designed to foster a sense of national pride and superiority, while also providing the technical skills needed to assert its power on the global stage. This strategy ensures a steady supply of citizens who are both ideologically aligned with the state's vision and technically proficient, making Germany a formidable force in international relations.
Do you think China will surpass the US in the next 20 years?
Not in terms of human rights, no.
@@An_Economist_Plays how about economically?
@@An_Economist_PlaysThe hell does the US know about human rights, tho? Fugging kissinger funded a coup in my country that made us live under a dictatorship for 3 decades. They killed over a million iraqis in a bogus war in the 2000s, They fund palestinian genocide by giving billions in military aid to the apartheid state of Israel. They put women in jail over miscarriages. Child marriage is legal in many places. Their hospitals can literally deny people without health insurance. The healthcare system is so overun by corporate greed that its considered a death sentence for poor people or people without insurance to get cancer. Private companies are literally bribing politicians into reducing the minimum age to work by funding their campaigns putting literal middleschoolers into the workforce. But go ahead, The US is a pinacle of freedom human rights and whatnot, just ask Asange
@@joaovitormendescerqueira6985 Excellent follow-up. 🙂 So the question is, if the surpassing is in stats only or in more meaningful, but less measurable ways. The Chinese population is 4x that of the USA, so their per capita GDP needs to be only 1/4th of the USA's to match it in terms of total economic size. But that doesn't take into account things like the USA's banking system and the dollar being the de facto reserve currency for the world. China needs to do much more than have a big GDP to become an economic focal point of the world.
Acknowledged, and no way is the USA as good as its advertising. Nevertheless, it's better than the PRC on rights, overall.
Your playthroughs are really fun, you should try play as italy sometime (as Sardinia piedmonte) I think you would have fun!
There's a modder who is working on a better Italian unification mod, and I will definitely do Italy to help test that mod out.
Do you know what you're gonna play next ? A new experiment ?
Got a WW1 total conversion mod to try out... 😊
Yeah. You definitl need to solve the bulgarian question. This cannot stant in the way of the Nordkap to Cape railroad.
Ooooooooh Nordkapp nach Sud Kapp... ja... das ist sehr interessant!
That section of the Croatian coast would be world famous for how often it appears on German rail ads, though it does look like the eastern Balkans could use some schnaps and schnitzel. Interesting thought experiment on the status of Indians in the Imperial holdings. I'd have to imagine race and religion would factor into the discussion, but the fact that Germany has so much good agricultural land in Europe would probably mean more grain could stay in India. Excellent series, as always, very glad TH-cam put your channel in my recommendations list!
Very glad you enjoyed it and I hope you enjoy your trip on the Cologne-Cairo line once we resume service...
Another wonderful video, love the new additions to the German empire!

Near the end, it looked like the leader of your Landowners was a Market Liberal. The liberals have infiltrated your government! That is why they supported free market policies like commercialized agriculture and free trade over your current regressive laws.
We fight on! It is only a temporary setback!
Oh, yeah even after 2 years this game feels kind of empty in some areas and mechanics, it needs improving. My wish is to see so much content in Vicky 3 like we now have in EU4 or HoI4.
Usually takes 3 years or so to get all the DLC in line. I think CK3 is finally at that point, now that it has plagues and landless characters. Vicky 3 will get there in about a year or so, I reckon.
You should have built important stuff, like telephones at home, not in a colony. I wonder what's next? Pushing back Russia? Balkan cleanup? It's better for Germany to keep law and order there, before some silly thing escalates into a major war. Scramble for Africa? It's easier to manage the colonies if they touch each other.
I needed to build where the workers were, to get it staffed up. One of the mods I'm using will delete out factories with insufficient staff, so it's important to get industry started in areas with available pops. Also, Oklahoma *is* an incorporated state and we have documents from 1147 showing that it was once part of the Holy Roman Empire... :-)
19:50 Does it really make sense to tax wheat? Even with the additional money coming in the SoL of the poor pops would be made worse badly enough to make the additional income not worth it I feel like
Usually I don't tax wheat, but playing as an autocratic power that isn't thinking about peasants put me in the mood to do so.
3:10 Did Germany lose it's "autocracy" because it was less optimal then the Brits and the French or did they lose it's political structure because well, they lost. And did they lose the war because their system was less efficient or because the Kaiser and his clique was diplomatically incompetent?
Excellent questions, all of them. I would say for the first that the autocracy was already eroded after voting rights were granted. For the loss of the war, it was because the British cultivated a relationship with the USA in the late 1800s while throwing Germany under the bus every chance it could. With the USA backing the British right to blockade, the Germans were unable to feed themselves properly.
Thank you for the insanely good mod list and best wishes for your series. However, I have a question regarding the new trading system. As I have noticed while using the mod list, even though trading is productive and in high levels (as much as trade level 33) there are trade routes which results in income loss. Could it be because the AI prioritise production of important materials as tools? Last time I was trading with UK 2.5k tools resulting in 14k income loss. I would be really happy if you could explain the change about it, thanks in advance.

Interesting run. It’s interesting the unintended consequences of trying to maintain Junker dominance: the police level from local police to etc
As people get more money, even the conservatives push for liberalisation... not too much, but still, they want to open things up for themselves.
Nooooo! Feminism! XDXDXDXD
Aiiiiiieeeeeeeeee!
Without a doubt, the most scenic rail journey in the world! I wish I understood what made regime change work or not in this game, very annoying to finish a long war and have it not change. On the bright side, you've rolled back more rights, taken care of the communists on the border... I'd say it's nothing but sunshine and rainbows for the German empire!
That was SUCH a frustration we could not install a king on the throne of the USA!
what a ridiculous coincidence. I've never seen the swiss do anything let alone revolt to form Second Switzerland, let alone at the exact moment you launched your unification play
Cruise control to greatness!
Germany conquering Poland? Classic.
We're getting into the paranoid flexing part of the game, so that's gonna happen!
Just gotta say: This series is criminally underrated! If there was any justice in the world you would have a lot more views and likes on it. Anyway, I'm enjoying it immensely, so keep up the good work!👍
Thanks very much for your kind words! And Old World itself is such an underrated gem of a game.
@@An_Economist_Plays No worries! And I agree wholeheartedly about Old World!

During the British proletariat revolt did you check if the British would give you anything to join their side? They’re usually willing to part with stuff when facing an existential crisis like that
Yeah, nothing good in the bargain bin there.
Any thoughts on VTM? It incorporates some of the mods on this list by default(cold water ports for example) I’ve had it be an essential part of my mod list for a long time, but I’m curious if I should try a game without it.
I think it uses some mods that would conflict with ones I see as essential, so I'm not doing much with VTM.
feels like rotating between grain iron and tools instead of stacking one at a time wouldve been much better for the economy
It is something I want to explore. The GUI lends itself to stacking, and I think that's a habit I need to break.
you might wanna check out power & revolution
I'm excited to see how long this return to autocracy lasts. Would it be possible to keep a legitimate gov't with the military and Junkers? On the plus side, if the army holds against all those radicals, there will be less of them to deal with in the long run.
It's going to be a shaky ride, once the Socialists get going in force!
German boarders looks fantastic while everyone else looks like they had a tad bit too much of a drink
The duty of every human player is to commit towards pretty borders!
6:22 the estimate is heard was 80 million indians I guess hear the lower end of estimates Holy shit
Yes, that's a low end. The last famine was in 1943, as the British took grain out of India for their war effort. Since independence, there have been zero famines in India.
Me watching those radical numbers climb up all series: " Do you want a communist revolution... because that's how you get a communist revolution!"
Nein! We will have autocracy! The people will love it as soon as they stop complaining about a lack of democracy!
