That all depends on what jobs you take on. I mainly have smaller domestic work which is fine alone. I sometimes take on larger projects that I have some friends come and help me with, but for sure you can keep going alone if you wish, it’s a bit of a harder graft so maybe not forever for me

I’d just dot and dab it mate. Wouldn’t be worth filling anything out in my opinion. Just use bigger/smaller dabs where needed. Hope this helps 👍🏼

I think I know what you mean mate. A couple of mm shouldn’t really show too much tho so I’d just concentrate on making by the line down the window frame nice n straight and sharp 👌🏼

Hi mate. It’s probably more preferable these days as it’s much quicker and cheaper. I could dot and dab and skim this size room in a day if I wanted to. If you were wet plastering in sand and cement it would need to set overnight before skimming and much more labour heavy. Also drying time before painting. Skimmed plasterboards can be painted up to a week quicker than floated walls. But I agree regarding the durability, not as solid as a floated wall. All depends on what the customer wants really

Thanks for your explanation mate. So I take it you can't plaster using multifinish straight to bricks and breeze blocks without wet plastering with sand and cement first? Also why do some people build frame on brick wall and then nail the boards rather than dot and dab when this does the same job with less work and materials?

No, multifinish is only designed to be a few millimetres thick, it would badly crack if you were to use it straight on the blocks. Its would also cost a fortune 😅 I’m guessing people who build a frame on the wall with wood aren’t confident to get a flat job with dot and dab, again personal preferencec really. And that’s what I did! 😁 my sheet of stainless steel had a plastic handle 😅

Cheap trowel wear it in on bit of sand & cement work... or just rub it down on the concrete floor...after a bit of patience you will get there. A new blade on a marshmalltown is a pig until it broken in. Rust on the blade will hold the finish lovely. Just clean it before ya skimming (finishing) The Drill, brush, buckets in video yes are cheap as chips but great for an apprentice or DIY. brushes used on rough coat & stick don't last anuway The biggest issue with plasterers and the trade in general it's become a pissing contest Been on the trowel for a very long time... We need more exposure to show the level of skills required. Not I can earn 5k a week or crack 150m float & set a day solo Their are very few channels worthy of a subscription..this fella is one of them 👍

That’s really hard to answer mate, all depends on the size of the set you have on, heat, humidity and background all dependant. The bag of multi finish gives a rough guide of the back but it’s a very varied answer I’m afraid, sorry can’t be much help

Hi mate! To be honest any backing coat that’s been left for a while is a pain to skim on! Next time try neat SBR the night before, then a 4-1 just before skimming, should help a bit. It’s all about practice really, hope it looked all good in the end! And thanks for watching Ash

Indeed mate! To be honest I’ve tried all the trowels out there, but these days I’ve just stuck with my old faithful marshaltown 14 inch for everything. I went through a phase of using the flex trowels but they ride bumps too easily and can leave a wavy finish. I was really surprised how this came out! It didn’t look a masterpiece once it was dry but after getting that 1 mist coast of paint over it, you’d never know the difference. Granted, it wasn’t as easy but it was still doable!! Hi Bee! Thanks so much, appreciate the support. Well to be honest it’s all about personal preference. For me it all depends on the size of the hit I have on. For example a 30m set would need around 3 bags, mixing all at once and using it all wouldn’t be possible so it do two bags, flatten that off and then use the 3rd bag to lay it in. However with a bag or two it’s fine to use the same mix for both coats. If it’s stiffened up a little then just water its down slightly for the laying in coat. Hope that makes sense Regarding how fast you need to be, I’d just concentrate on neatness 1st and the speed will come with time. Hopefully your boss will be understanding that it’s not all going to come together overnight and it will take time. If you’re working on site, your speed will soon improve. It’s not the best working environment but it does give you valuable experience. Hope this helps a little, and best of luck Ash

@@AshThePlasterer thank you for the valuable advise Ash. So would adding water when the plaster starts stiffening up accelerate the setting time of of the plaster? So for example I’ve mixed up enough for two coats, I put on my first coat, then when it comes to my second coat I add a little clean water and give it a mix with the whisk. Would that accelerate the speed of the setting time? Cause I actually tried doing that at work to soften the plaster up a bit for my second coat and my boss told me it will increase how quickly the plaster sets. I don’t really believe him as he’ll tell a fib here and there just so he can get his way. I can’t ask him anything, all he’s concerned about is getting the job done.

I do have another question, so im bonding out a room tomorrow, and again unlike all other plasterers my boss insists that bonding is only one coat, no levelling with a straight edge, but I have to trowel it out to get it flat just like we do when skimming, and add a flick and water here and there to soften it up wherever required. Does that sound right to you and you familiar with the process? Cheers

No one likes a bendy board

The house has cavity wall insulation, also this was an internal wall so no need, unless the customer requests it. Insulation boards are stuck the same way as this, they need to be stored really flat though as they can bend and it’s near on impossible to straighten them, they’re also very expensive! A few others have also asked about window reveals, may well get a video sorted for that soon Hope this helps mate Ash
