    I wanted to listen to this but for people from another country, it's hard to listen to someone who says "LIKE" constantly which many Americans do. Sad because it was interesting.

    Wow! Ive heard of granulating paint, but only used context clues to imagine what they were. I imagined they'd produce the same effect as adding salt to watercolors. It's very intriguing to see what they're actually about. I can imagine the Tundra Violet would be perfect for making storm clouds & the Rose of Ultramarine may work well in my blood cell paintings. Thanks for making this video. It was nice stumbling upon it a 3am. Edit: I'm very curious about how these mix with one another, non granulating paint & metallics.

    Love this video! My latest favorites are the lunar blue and cascade green. The lunar blue didn't show up well on my screen because it's SO much more beautiful in real life. Another thing to consider when using granulating paints is the paper. I can't afford to use something like Arches for swatching, and playing with the paints to see what they'll do, but the granulation (and the separating colors) doesn't come through nearly as well with lower quality paper. I also didn't realize how much of a difference the amount of water made until I got the Gansai Tambi paints and let some dry in a puddle in my palette. Wow, what a difference. So it gave me a new appreciation for all the Daniel Smith granulating colors I have. Thanks for talking about this, I wish I would have seen your videos on granulating paints a long time ago. They are my favorites even if I wasn't using them to their full advantage. Thanks!

    Rose of Ultramarine is made with only one granulating pigment. PB29, Ultramarine Blue. PV19 is a Quinacridone violet pigment, ranging from Quin Reds, Quin Rose to Quin Violets. None granuate at all unless a granulating medium is added to it.

    Just to add to the conversation, common granulating colors are ultramarine blue, Earth colors like burnt sienna, yellow ochre and burnt umber. So if you cannot invest in specific specialty paints atm, you can experience a lot of fun with these. Also, paynes grey and sepia are fairly active and fun. Also I believe PBK11 black is magnetic and moves a lot and interestingly can be added in tiny amounts to pinks, purples and greens to create the popular “dusk” colors some manufacturers are selling lately.

    What a wonderful and helpful guide to the many characteristics of granulation! Thank you! 🙏🏻 QUESTION: is DS Moonglow the only fugitive color in this demonstration? I'm only using mine in sketchbooks now, after seeing drastic fading.

  • @AndreaCrisp
    @AndreaCrisp 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for another great video on granulating colors! Unfortunately, I just learned from another TH-cam artist that Moonglow is not light fast as advertised. I had literally just purchased it the day prior and was watching videos about it. I guess the actual light fast testing is with on either oil or acrylic not for each specific medium. This person did their own lightfast tests and it faded immediately. The watering down must affect it. Total bummer. I plan to return it and create my own version based on the video (Kimberly something if you search Moonglow lightfast or create your own Moonglow you’ll find the video). Extremely disappointing but others should know. In fact, learning about this is how I eventually came across your channel, because then I went down a granulating watercolor rabbit hole! Happy to have found you!

  • @AndreaCrisp
    @AndreaCrisp 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I am just getting started with watercolor. Usually did mixed media and art journaling. I can no longer use my dominant hand fully (nerve damage), so I figured that the best way to continue creating would be abstract watercolor with my other hand. I am very drawn to granulating watercolors as I have always loved texture in my art. I really appreciate your videos sharing the pigment information plus examples. I am learning so much, taking notes on my phone even. I want to buy them all! But based on your sharing the pigment info I think I can start with just a few and work on experimenting with mixing as well. As I improve I can buy more. I just found you today, but I have already subbed and watched several videos. It is clear that you use your artistic skills and creativity in everything even your video editing. I know that takes a lot of time and planning. Thank you so very much for sharing your talent. Much appreciated.💖😄🫶🏻

    Love Undersea Green, I have used it in a few paintings myself, just stunning. Have you tried the Serpentine Genuine? That is a lovely separating green too, it has brown specks that settle out, really pretty. Have recently also purchased Daniel Smith's Purpurite, wooo, thats a pretty colour. Also use their Sodalite Genuine, a really lovely Blue Black. I just Love Daniel Smith watercolours, fell in love from my first use years ago. Serpentine was the very first colour I purchased from the range, and I have been very slowly collecting colours ever since. ❤

Alvaro Castagnet recommends using Daniel Smith's Lunar Black to achieve moody, textured shadows in your pieces.
