The School of Hard Knocks REVIEW | Who's That Pokemon? - A Pokemon Anime Rewatch Podcast | Ep. 9
Fun Fact: There are technically two 'games' before this you could theoretically argue were the first spin-off game, but both are debatable. The first was a Picross level set downloadable via the Satelliaview in late 1997/early 1998. It was more of a level pack and demo promotion then a full game, it's lost media, but it exists. The other was the Pokemon Pikachu Tamagotchi device, which released in early 1998. This could be considered a self contained game or a toy, depends on how you look at it. It was intended to compete with the Digimon V-pets from 1997.
Nothing
Yugioh and Digimon killed pokemon
Not exactly
@davidlewis5189 how old are you? If you were in middle school during 911 you would see no one but babies like pokemon. Yugioh was the ship
@@fouraztecas6342 I was born in Feb 1988
I’m 32 I was there for the original hype of Pokémon absolutely was obsessed with it but around gen 3 I felt I was too old for Pokémon but that changed in 2016 with GO brought a fresh look at it and fully got me to the Pokéman I am today love the series love the games brings me back to a simpler time.
If Pokémon came around today, it most likely would not be as successful as it was back then, because there is far more competition today than there was back in 1999
As someone who was a kid through all of this, I can say that your assessment is on point. The GS ball, Johto filler and the 3rd gen not being able to trade with gen 1/2 was all major reasons why I stepped away until gen 6.
I stopped watching Pokemon when i got obsessed with Yu-Gi-Oh.
17:35 I'm at this point when I comment on this, but for me personally, what caused me to fall out of it was accessibility - at the time, I was 12 or 13 years old, and my parents refused to get me a Game Boy Advance. My first gameboy was a GBC so I was able to play RBY then GS afterwards with no issue, but the introduction of a new system to play the third gen DID leave some younger or poorer fans in the dust, given the price of the GBA at the time was a hard ask. It wasn't until the SP was released a few years later that I finally had my hands on the system after saving up birthday and Christmas money for awhile, and by then I had moved past the point of caring. Couple it with the TCG suffering from bloat, the changes to the anime, it was really easy for a lot of the long time fans at that point to just be fatigued and disillusioned with the entire franchise and not come back for awhile. I only check in every few generations to see how things are going, but after coming back to play Scarlet and Violet...I feel like I'm going to take another dip out of the franchise for a good long time.
Late but yugioh and digimon weren’t inspired by pokemon, good video tho
By gen 2 I saw right through this and I was 10 years old by that time. I was almost done with 151 Pokémon now gen 2 no way I was doing it again I just lost interest. They really milked it. Especially ash should of change him sooner
I must be Mandela effecting myself then, cause I could have sworn I watched the Porygon episode dubbed in english as kid. haha
Essentially it came down to 1. It was a fad, it came and went once the next thing came along 2. A combination of parents complaining and kids "outgrowing" it
I HATE BUG TYPE POKEMON
Had they made a Pokemon Adventures manga adaptation right after the 90s kids became teenagers, shit would have been considered the pinnacle of pokemon and since the manga is much more darker than the anime, shit woukd have worked
Personality I stopped watching cause they removed the gs ball. I was a kid and was confused and I was getting very bored of the filler so I left the show cause nothing interesting even happend
DUDE! SYNDICATION PACKAGES! You just gave me a new lead on why Beauty and the Beach only aired once or twice. That would make so much sense.
Maybe the drop in sales from the gap between gen 2 and 3 is partially to blame for the stuffed release schedule for Pokemon games now
I was an elementary schooler when Pokémon mania came out. After I left elementary and went to junior high in 2000, most guys I know of, especially the popular ones, changed and said that Pokémon is childish, etc. The guys started to shift their interest in gurls and fashion. A very few stayed within the hobby.
I stopped watching Pokémon when Yu Gi Oh came out.
I always thought that they were the anime version of green/leaf/blue(ash is anime red, gary is anime green or blue internationally and then have the female trainer be there too) and the other is either Ritchie or maybe a kid that lost his charmander or released it then Damian got it and then ash got it, but that doesn't really make much sense
Human beings happened to poke mania. All manias will pass over time. So many people care about fitting in and trends and this is still very true today.
Nothing "KiLLeD!!1!1!!1!" it. The franchise came to the west over 2.5 years after it started in Japan, and we got those two-and-a-half years' worth of media dropped on us in the course of a few months (games, anime, TCG, and general merchandise). Of course that's going to cause a frenzy, and of course the frenzy won't last forever once everything normalizes and catches up, but the franchise was never in existential danger or obscure or anything after that point. When the first Mario and Zelda games came out in the US they had a similar situation - TV shows, breakfast cereals, etc. but nobody acts like those series died or something afterward. People have such a bizarre concept of Pokémon somehow forever being a "fad" when it's the second-most successful video game franchise of all time and the single biggest multimedia franchise ever. Among people who know nothing about it, still gets judged by weird content like moral panics, old Pop-Tarts promotions, and filler episodes of the anime. It's like people have no object permanence or think that the opinion of the other kids in the playground somehow means anything about the franchise's success, it's so weird.
in the japanese version brock says to ash he goes to "buy provisions" for the way ahead
"There was an argument that the pokemon anime was more popular than the games" They were. Keep in every 90s kid in America was living a beautiful suburban neighborhood with loveable white parents making $100K a year. The 90s in general is when immigration really took off in the U.S. Gameboy Colors (I was born born when Gameboy pocket released) were super expensive for parents that were barley scraping by living with pay to pay check to afford But the Pokemon TV series was accessible for anyone who owned a TV (WB channel was free) so kids that came from low income families could enjoy Pokemania without needed to waste 20% of their parents monthly income to buy them expensive gaming handhelds and pokemon cards.
4:12 this line from Gary didn't age well especially since he wimped out too but after johto 😂😂
Look at the movie I choose you
Brock wasn't a racist caricature though
When Pokemon came out, it made a lot of things redundant
For me there were 2 components of my original lost love of Pokemania in its first iteration. 1, I was attached to Ash as the main character, and I was not happy to discover that in gen2 (gold/silver) you’re playing as a new character that isn’t ash. It to me was like playing a new Super Mario game and not having Mario as the main character. 2nd issue was my problems with the (what I believed to be at the time) “contrived” ending of the first film (the tears bringing Ash back to life). Pokemon to me was always grounded in some kind of scientific logic. Crying bringing someone back to life was something to me on Disney fairy tale level, which I was VERY over at this time in my life. I did get over both issues, but it took until 2012 or so.
Manga Red and blue
Gen 3. Still remember when we kids got it and played it during recess. Awful gen with awful pokemon. I remember a kid getting so pissed by it he broke the game by throwing it and stomping on it.
I know for me personally, my enthusiasm for Pokemon stopped in the middle of watching Pokemon 3: The Movie. I remember watching The First Movie with a group of friends and a huge crowd but only my dad was willing to see 2000 with me (also a huge crowd). By the time 3 came out, only my sister and my friend watched it with me. The theater was practically empty. The mania had stopped. And while my enthusiasm was strong before the movie began, I suddenly felt bored to tears during the film. I might have actually fallen asleep. By then, the older kids were too cool for Pokemon and I was getting older too. I still liked Pokemon, but it was no longer something everyone did. It was more of a niche franchise by that point, something on par with Digimon. What really bogged me down was the constant filler anime. Nothing mattered. So much content yet no pay off. So I think you nailed it on the head. Forcing so many movies in such a short time span is bound to kill momentum. I had the audacity to continue watching the show and buying the games, but practically keeping it a secret until I became an adult. The initial marketing and Gotta Catch 'em All strategy is something that still affects me to this day. I didn't want to quit. But after they decided to change the anime voice actors, I finally called it quits. There just wasn't enough reason to dedicate myself to something I'm no longer passionate about when the people in charge aren't even going to commit to it. But I also remember Pokemon 3: The Movie just being the first time I was critical of the franchise. I hated the movie title. Why not just call it Pokemon: The Movie 3? Why focus so much time on the world transforming and not the characters? Why did they only focus on Entei and not the other 2 "dog"/tiger legendaries? Like, everyone made fun of Ash as a Pokemon trainer at the playground, but GS in the anime felt broken and the story was lost. I can only imagine how parents must have felt being dragged to the theater to watch a Pokemon movie for the 3rd time. Yu-Gi-Oh was the next thing for the younger kids and this type of shonen stuff has its limits. I wonder if these movies, essentially a marketing tool, would have prolonged the Pokemon mania had they been released slower and better quality. Or if anything with that much hype is destined to crash regardless of quality.
I agree with the movie review now as an adult. I still love the Gameboy and N64 games but have developed a strong dislike of the anime series since buying the indigo league DVD. I hate 4kids Pokemon.
This video is a good summary of why the anime went down hill. It has nothing to do with why Pokemania ended, however. It is not that complicated. No mania last forever. Pokemon had a great run, but the kids who played it grew out of it. Thats it. The end.
Yep
Come back!! And do more!! I love this stuff!
Porygon spotted
Gary and those trainers went to other cities apparently
The Samurai flashback had squirtle in it too!! Why do you keep forgetting Squirtle?! Lol Gary didn't take either of those he got an Eevee
There are 4 other trainers from Pallet including Gary. The other 3 took the the 3 starters. Gary took Eevee
They still could have written the GS ball into the Celebi movie.
Three years is a long time for a kid. In that time, we left Pokemon to hop on the Yu-Gi-Oh! bandwagon. I have many fond memories of both, but nothing compared to Pokemania. We legit went crazy over it.
For me gen 5 movies got best movies
I literally had no idea what race Brock was my entire life and it never seemed like a big deal. Is he Indian, Latino, Arab, Black or Filipino? Who knows and who cares man. I just like watching him collect rocks and get rejected by girls 😂 great video man. Subscribed for sure!
the dubbed version exists bro, i just found it on an anime website
Link?
Honestly, the thing that killed Pokemon was Yugioh. The Pokemon kids were a little bit older. 4kids marketed Yugioh almost identically to how they marketed Pokemon, except all of the cuteness was swapped out for edginess. In the end, the two franchises evolved pretty differently, but 4kids basically moved their marketing to the new IP. It doesn't help that the Hoenn games were the first installments of the series to leave some older Pokemon behind. This was the first time people were like "another 100 Pokemon? I'm out". That's why they dropped the gotta catch em all tagline
Pokemon didn't help themselves by doing the same thing within the anime and games, and dropping plot points such as the GS Ball..
I understand avoiding having nostalgia glasses and judging a film for what it is. However a lot of these rankings are poorly done and just flat out wrong.
It wasnt Pikachu's fault either, it was the antivirus missiles! Pikachu and Porygon are bkth wrongfully accused 😭
It hit hard and it hit fast. That much sudden hype over something new almost never lasts forever.
Pokemon is still around...
13:09 "Give us the big finale Raichu"
17:25 higher for me
