Guards of Atlantis 2 : What makes it so great?

Guards of Atlantis 2 is in my opinion one of the best boardgames. A fantastic team vs team skirmish game with great tactical depth while keeping the downtime very low. It will be available again through the current Gamefound campaign.

    You can definitely tell Sorcery only has the one set available. It feels (and looks) like very early MtG. It's not balanced, there's not a whole lot of counterplay, removal is extremely strong, card draw is super limited, card pool is still small. It's a game that's only had one set's worth of design development (counting Alpha/Beta as one). But it's a strong start, and I think Sorcery has the potential to be a great game in a few sets when the developers have been able to explore the available design space more. Right now, Sorcery is fairly fun, and breath of fresh air for worn out MtG players, but it's not a tight, competitive game that's going to compete with something like FaB or (potentially) Star Wars Unlimited. Yet.

      I'm glad you got to try the game, I'm also playing with the beta cards right now using the sealed mode opening 6 packs per player and then building a 25spell card deck from what you got. Very fun way to play👌

  • @bullno1
    @bullno1 ปีที่แล้ว

    It feels like the bullshit Yugi pulls during duelist kingdom. Attack the moon lol. Nowadays, yugioh is just 1 million card combo and deny. There's even a card in Sorcery that turns a frog into a prince. The entire set has one prince and he's not even that good. It is like a return to those simpler and sillier days instead of "meta" and "value" chasing.

    Had such a fun moment in a learning game with my brother in law when my frog swallowed his amazon warriors. Gulp! And a couple turns later, his soldier token (buffed by king of the realm) sliced open the frog's belly to free the amazon warrior, who then took revenge and knocked me out of the game. It's these epic, emergent storytelling moments that got me hooked.

    • @RingOfCards
      @RingOfCards ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing this- Sorcery really shines through this almost cinematic feeling. The frog is a great example among many; cards like Earthquake, Wildfire, Courtesan Thais and the Doomsday Device come to mind :)

    Huh, I could almost get the accent correct to your country.. nice video, good highlights. I agree, you better play a few matches before you can talk about what is good and what is not so good. One thing to me still remains: Cards often only have a keyword and you need to know the effect of that ability. For new players that needs some explanation.

    • @RingOfCards
      @RingOfCards ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct about the keywords. I feel that the way defending and intercepting works and especially the relations regarding above-/underground- and land/water units will also be some tough points to get right when starting out.

    • @paxgamer3003

    This game is easier to teach than any other ccg. I like that the wording on the cards themselves have clear concise wording, but I would ask that the comprehensive rules published online should include technical wording for each card.

    Now lets hope they print the crap out of Beta. The worse thing that could happen to this game is the collector-investor-scalper market takes it over and kills it before it gets legs. It is a very real threat.

    • @RingOfCards

    @mattstrott753 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very well said! This is why I love the game. It's so perfectly said, that I sent the link to my friends in hopes to convince them to pre-order beta. The only other thing I would add is that if people wait for Beta the game is very affordable. Ordinary and Exceptional cards are abundant, cheap and do most of the work. The rule of only having one of any unique in a deck and 2 of each elite should keep the chase cards at reasonable prices. Brilliantly designed.

    • @RingOfCards
      @RingOfCards ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you very much for these motivating words, also you make some great points: buying alpha now is way too expensive. I just had the precons, playmat and 1 display (very lucky pulls though) from the kickstarter. I have to say playing sealed was extremely fun and probably my favorite way of enjoying the game. kind regards from Switzerland

    Blows my mind that theme/flavour has taken a back seat for so long in mainstream games/tcgs.There's tons of great thematic card games out there if you explore. Hands down my favouritre is FEROX (a cannibal-exploitation film themed card game from Craft Fair Games. NOT family friendly, which is a plus point for me. The only reason I got into nerd stuff as a kid was because of residual satanic-panic vibes coming through from the US in the mid and late 90's here in the UK)) I really want to try out Sorcery and have been aware of it for a couple of years before it was released, but I can't bring myself to enter the tcg realm again. I'm tempted by the pre-constructed decks, but then do I need a massive playmat too?

    • @RingOfCards
      @RingOfCards ปีที่แล้ว

      I also feel that many TCGs lack this thematic focus - for example the abilities on the cards often feel tacked on and not like they would truly belong to that character, Sorcery is a big improvement in that regard. About your question: You could make it work somehow without the playmat but for this game I would strongly recommend to get one, and they aren't as big as I thought.

    Very interesting I hadn't heard of this game, I would try it if it wasn't collectible. Going back to buying the loot boxes of the 90's in the form of booster packs is very unappealing to me. Have you played Netrunner? That remains my favourite card game in this vein.

    • @RingOfCards
      @RingOfCards ปีที่แล้ว

      I can understand this but opening the packs for this game and not knowing which cards I would get was really exciting to me. From a competitive perspective it may feel problematic trying to get all the best cards but I mostly just play to have fun and for this approach even the starter-decks do a good job. If you want to try a great non collectible card based skirmish game I strongly recommend Summoner Wars 2nd Edition. As for Netrunner: no I have never played it but I know that it is very beloved among it's players. When you say "in this vein" do you think it has similarities to a skirmish game or do you mean it's similar to a collectible card battler?

    • @dirklectisch
      @dirklectisch ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RingOfCards I'm not sure what qualifies as a skirmish game, but if Magic does then Netrunner should as well. There's different factions, there is deck construction and you have a one on one battle of sorts. I don't think it has a ton of similarities with this game judging by your review other than broadly being in the same genre. But it's a great game none the less. Unfortunately it's out of print although there is a community initiative keeping it alive and designing new sets. I heard about Summoner Wars but haven't played it. Thanks for the recommendation I'll check it out.

      You don't even have to get into the "collectible" aspect of Sorcery. A set of 4 Beta precons, which includes a booster pack and tokens is $40. That's cheaper than most board games and you would likely get more play out of it than your average board game.

      @RingOfCards ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been looking into Eternal Champions. While Guards II and Eternal Champions both are skirmish games, I see some big differences: Guards II has a focus on team-play while EC seems to be designed for 1vs1. Guards uses a no-dice system. In Guards you play a card from your hand to perform each action. Also in Guards any attack at the right moment can be deadly while in EC the characters usually have well over 10 health points that first need to be reduced to zero. Hope that this helps to get a feel for the differences between the two.
