My favorite breed is Rhode Island Red
😍
I've never heard of a "Golden Death Layer" before, but that looks like a Golden Campine. What's the difference? The only things I didn't like about my Campines, is that they could fly, and it was 50/50 on whether one would be extremely friendly, or extremely nervous/scared. I suppose egg size is another issue, but I never had them for egg production. Once had an albino hatch (the yellow feathers were white), and the egg had a tiny green tint to it.
Hubby and I have been purchasing half a cow and whole pig from our local farmer now for seven years and bulk chicken from Azure Standard going on three years.
My favourites too! Wyandotte ❤
I hate copper Marans. The killed 2 of my turkeys very cannibal.
In GA, do a side each year and we go boneless, we end up with about 60% of hanging weight and averages for us about 7lb when all said and done. That does not include the bones, tallow, or organs we get.
I didn’t see any tenderloin!
I won't be buying any hatchery-developed hybrid breeds again. I've noticed that they're designed to maximize egg production, but those extra 40 eggs per year mean thinner shells and a thinner hen. My Black Sex Link chickens are great layers, however when they stop laying (high production breeds stop laying at an earlier age, they run out of ovum) there won't be any stew meat on their bones.
in Washington state 5.33 per pound for whole grass-fed grass finished that includes broth bone, organs, tongue, tallow, .. on the east side $4.39lb includes processing fee for steers, plus a $35. slaughter fee for 1/4, $70. slaughter fee for 1/2 and $140. slaughter fee for whole.
That’s a great price!
Buckeye chickens very good
A question - that 950 lb live weight, was that your half? Or was that the live weight of the whole cow? Same with the 515 lb hang weight. Getting 165 lb of meat out of a 515 lb of carcass doesn't seem right. But from a 267 1/2 lb half, that would make more more sense. Clarify, if you would
Same tought here.
Ditto, we do this each year and normally can expect about 60% of meat from hanging weight.
so how can I find private raised blue laced red wyandotts?
Just want to say thank you for the bit of advice about the looking for freezers at estate sales. Never thought about that.
We paid that for a quarter beef here in SD...a week ago. Enjoy!! Best meat is fresh from the local locker.
How many plants did you plant in the raised bed?
My family of 3 did a quarter of a cow and half a hog. SO far it has lasted us more than 2 years. We also did more ground beef and pork cause we use that more. Nice that you are supporting local and saving money you know how that beef was raised.
Thank you for letting me know about the copper marans. I was considering getting some ,but now I will probably stick with rockbars and red sexlinks. I had americanas before. I do not like them because they are more wild and also louder than other chickens when laying.
Well, crud. We border that area on the Ohio side. I have always worried about this. *I will not become a felon... I will not become a felon...* Thanks for this info.
That was really cool. Thank you for showing that.
Both the black with green and the black and white are adorable.
Wow! Great Price! In Maryland, we have purchased 1/2 beef and whole Berkshire pig several times for a couple different farms. Our last purchase cost: $9.10 per pound for beef and $7.35 per pound for hogs.
Buff Brama's I just love them. They are so gentle and do not pick on each other. My least favorite breed is silver lace wyandotts they are just mean.
Thank you for your video and the great information. We are in an exact opposite situation from yours. We live in a hot dry climate and we need chickens to be able to deal with extreme high temperatures. To that end, we prefer our chickens to be skinnier, to be more lightly feathered, and to have large combs to dissipate heat. Despite these differences I have learned something from watching your video so I thank you.
I moved to Tennessee. Where can I go to get all that? Middle Tennessee.
We raise hogs and cattle here in Southern middle Tennessee. Butchered meat prices are all over the place. We no longer sell livestock to butcher. I can tell you that there is one farm that charges $3200 total cost for whole cow. I think they estimate 450# meat. Not sure if that's a good deal or not.
@@backachershomestead That pricing sounds about right. What is the company and I can have my husband do some research?
@maryhawken817 I believe it's called 64 meats, Highway 64 Savannah Tennessee. My wife saw their advertisement on Facebook. Not sure if that will help.
@maryhawken817 sorry it is 64 Beef you can Google it. Hope that helps
@@backachershomestead Awesome, thank you for the information.
Local meat is always better as well. Thanks for the breakdown! Indiana has mostly low prices. Gasoline is normally higher than the surrounding states except for Illinois. When Kentucky gas is 2.55 Indiana is 3.05. Anywho. Have family there.
You gotta be saving at that price ,plus fresh, cared for well and most importantly better quality, better then supermarkets meat that's full of steroids, antibiotics and other nasty stuff
Wow very impressive. Cheers. And I very much agree that buying local is by far the best.
Thank you your videos are helping me a lot. Cheers I hope you doing good.
for the feather picking, you can use the "no pickin", and it will stop them from eating each others feathers. After a while, you can stop spraying. I had a hawk stalking my free range chickens, and got one small one. So, when I saw the hawk, I would run outside and clap my hands thinking the noise would detur the hawk. The third time I went outside and clapped, the chickens ran under cover. (I had them trained). We have barred rocks, and blue Plymouth rocks
No nasty comments about how pets is ridiculous. Doesn’t solve anything , just make you look petty. 😮
Rhode Island Reds are my favorite breed by far! They are sweet and hardy. My oldest hen passed away just shy of 9 years old.
I guess they survived the fridge
I would love to know if you have any idea what type of chickens do best in very hot summers? I will be getting some and am very new to raising chickens
Being raised in the country I also hated the aggressive roosters, but it seems most breeds can learn not to mess with you if they survive a "corrrection" with a tobacco stick or booted foot when they come after you.
How many chickens would you keep in this tractor both full time how many and how many of they get to free range outside a lot of the day? Also could you put in some nesting boxes attached so they move with the tractor?
Is it safe to buy live chickens from our closest poultry places and raise and benefit from them instead of going to a farm ?
What does broody mean?
8:28 first cluck was, Thanks, Mom! second cluck was, Wait ~ What? Not #1? 😂
Used to help take care of a mixed flock and the rooster was a speckled sussex named Earl. Whenever I would go into their area to do maintenance he would gather up all the hens behind him and give me a long stare to make sure I didn't mean trouble, then come over for pets when he decided that I was probably fine lol. Such a sweet bird and loyal protector of the flock. When I get chickens of my own someday it will be speckled sussex for me.
Oh they are involved alright what other reason would they have to just be in certain places
I'm in the Intermountain West, and this whole video basically sums up why I try to aim for a late-May to mid-June arrival if I buy chicks that need to be shipped for some reason. (ngl, it can snow in the Rockies _basically_ year-round, but I've found that time-frame gives them the best chances when finding the balance between my climate and the approx. climate where most hatcheries are located.)
Good ideas!
My #1 is the same as yours they are so smart but my #2 is the red commit because they lay often, bigger eggs and are friendly.
My Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds are the bomb! My Australorps were too dumb to function and either self-culled or I had to cull due to them CONSTANTLY escaping and getting in the neighbors yard. I am sure they are great layers and were pretty well mannered... too bad none even made it to laying age
Friese goudpel kip or Frisian goldpel chicken, they where a commercial bread up to worldwar 1, they are SMART, last summer one stole a steak from my plate while i was eating, and yes they can swim, a strange dog came into the yard, wich is bordered by a small river, 2 did fly over, when nightfall came, i did call them from my side of that river, and .....first one did fly into the water and then did swim to me..i picked her up out of the water while the other one still was onlooking from the other side, and YES, same thing....never had an agresive rooster and the chickens are very tame, weird it is, that they are rather indivudualistic, here 2 there one, and rooster with 4 or 6 or ony 2, they managed to boss my German shepherd dog when she was new here, chased her away from her food ? well, she now learned to be the boss, the cats ? i feed them seperate or they will not get any at all, and yes this chickens are determant, they sneak into the house at times, at the look out for the dog and cat feeder bowls, trying to rake the garden ? forget it, they love me to do the raking and dont mind it when the rake hits them, i leave them closed in when i want to rake, needless to say, all 8 of them and the rooster will die a natural death, oh, and when we build a new barn or srtucture ? the whole group inspects it all the way while we are have coffee or lunch breaks,
What about dogs
Agreed the hatchery we use is about 3 hours away it’s the closest we can get but last year they where trying to pressure us into taking some chicks 3 weeks early and where getting mad that we said no it’s to cold anyways a friend of mine said sure cuss they didn’t want the confrontation and she ended up loosing about 30 of her 100 chicks she figured I have a good insulated building so it will be fine but within a week to 5 days of having them they started dying … they honestly shouldn’t even ship when it’s that cold I live in Alberta and we can still get -20 degrees in early spring….
My favorite, Americana. Docile, smart and good layers of multicolored eggs. Least favorite white Leghorns, aggressive and not very cold hardy.
I have a huge English Buff Orpington rooster, he is the perfect gentleman and only crows 2 or 3 times per day, although every time for quite some time… He is superchill and sweet. Love him. Every time I put new bedding in their nests he checks it out for comfort before the ladies are allowed in. He is also very good with ”the kids”, but he does not get why his ladies can’t get out of the nest without his help after laying an egg…. This really upsets some of the girls which is hilarious to watch.
