Honestly I have the complete opposite opinion about the sketch artwork. It is classic, evocative and leaves freedom to fill in details such as color if someone feels inspired to play them as a character.
Quick and easy to follow. Excellent stuff!
Great video and presentation. What app/tol you use for the maps?
Thanks! I used Dungeondraft for the maps in this video.
The best analogy for The Shire v. the rest of Eriador is if the Apocalypse happened and Lancaster County Pennsylvania was completely spared. The Shire is blessed and the rest of Eriador is cursed.
Thanks for doing this and great explanation! I was considering your Mini-campaign to play solo but thought it too much for a solo PC. The band rules allows this without having to scale down the adventure, same for other landmark adventures. It doesn't need to be a band of 6, maybe 3 or 4 is enough. I'll read through the rules thoroughly. Thanks again!
That sounds great! A 3-4 person band should be enough.
One thing to also maybe consider with this is the rules about the Eye of the Enemy which mentions powerful magic increases the enemies gaze on the party. So that value can increase if a player is using this and casts stronger spells
Absolutely! I think I might have included a mention of that on the updated pdf, but I don't fully remember.
Is Amon Rin made up? couldnt finid info about it. Great Adventures cant wait to try it out, also big fan of your channel!
@@revcr Thanks! And yes, Amon Rin is made up for this adventure.
Regarding the dimensions, Free League is a European publisher so naturally they will use standard ISO paper sizes like A4 for this book. Unfortunately North Americans insist on using inches instead.
A question; if art work and inspiration for adventures is important to me, which game should I choose?
The artwork is nearly identical for both except for the covers. LOTR5e has a few unique pictures in the core book, but other than that, it's all going to be the same, so it's really just which rule system you want to play.
@@willattheworldsend Thanks!
Hi Will! Thank you for all your videos. What tool(s) did you use to create the maps for your adventures? Most tools I've seen (like dungeoncraft etc) seem too cartoonish to be used for this setting
@pstralen Thanks! The maps in this video were just drawn by hand, but now I use Wonderdraft and Dungeondraft for all my maps. They do look to cartoony for me, so I'm trying to find something new, but so far, I haven't found anything I like more.
The scope for TOR 2nd Edition might seem small a year ago. Since August 2024 is there now the Moria Supplement. Besides the two other supplements taking place in Eriador. But not only that. There is a load of supplements from the 1st Edition that can be used for the 2nd Edition, including the two Rohan supplements which is really good. It took Cubicle7 almost 10 years to publish a good number of supplements for the 1st Edition. Now Free League is working on more supplements for the 2nd Edition. And it comes in a nice stream. Next supplement is the Elven Expension; "Realms of the Three Rings". Nepitello and Free League is patiently working towards the East and the South of Eriador. Just be a tad patience. Everything can't come at once… 😉
The affliction of many peoples of the Americas to use the self-degrading feature of speech known as 'up-talk' is most saddening.
I love this.
Great video. Thank you very much. Love from Canada.❤
Love Ruins of Lost Realm. I ran the first three adventures for my crew. As a Loremaster, I needed to reshape the adventures into leaner highlights for easier reference during play. Also, it would be great to have maps without the numbers that can be shared with players.
If you join The One Ring discord server, someone has added the maps without numbers, I think.
@ thanks for the tip. I’ll check it out
Correct me if im wrong but the resistance is either a 3on a failure or a 4 on success+1 for every 6. If the time limit would allways match the resistance, it would be way to easy.
You are correct. The rules in this video were correct however Free League has changed the rules since it was made.
Is there any adventure in the core rules? What do people run first?
There's a short one called Star of the Mist. I didn't care for it too much. I've written a bunch of adventures you can download here: ko-fi.com/willattheworldsend/shop Or if you check The One Ring Discord there are a bunch of adventures that people have shared on there.
Going to run Balins expedition to Moira campaign. I am starting it at Erebor with some council scenes convincing Dain to allow and provide aid. The players will be dwarf champions recruited by Balin and will function as scouts and vanguard of the larger expedition force. They will need to return to Balin who stays with the expedition, to get quests and direction. Planning on some encounters with the elves near mirkwood, and beornings demanding tribute to cross the ford, on the trip to moria. When they get to moria they will go through the reclaiming and rebuilding all the way up to the tragedy and then we will see if they are able to escape with their lives or fall with the rest of the colony. Going to try and keep it as close to cannon as possible, but I am okay with deviations for the sake of the fun of the game.
This sounds absolutely fantastic!
That sounds terrific!
This is fantastic review of a brilliant entry into this RPG! I am actually planning a solo campaign to start tomorrow stemming from Tarolch's Hall, I am really looking forward to it and it will be my entry into the Mines of Moria.
@@TheRebelGM56 Amazing! What culture will you be going with? And basic Strider Mode or with a band?
@@willattheworldsend it starting of solo, going to roll some dice for culture and see what I get but favouring starting of a Dwarf from the new culture in the back of the book
Where are the pdfs that you are using in this video? Can you please link or share them in the description? Pleeeease?
Free League hasn't made the Mission Worksheet or Ally Cards freely available yet. So the only way to get them is with the Moria book. You can get the hard copy here: freeleaguepublishing.com/shop/the-one-ring/moria-through-the-doors-of-durin/ Or the PDF here: legacy.drivethrurpg.com/product/472616/The-One-RingTM--MoriaTM-Through-the-Doors-of-Durin
@@willattheworldsend I have the pdf. I'd hoped you'd found a form fillable one. I see now on rewatching that it was a screen overlay sort of situation. :( :( :( Thanks for replying!❤
Thanks the the review! I agree that the Journey rules don't particularly appeal to me, especially for Moria. I'm preparing to run a Moria campaign, and I'm feeling much more comfortable running travel around Moria more like an urban campaign, with the famous landmarks as places the PCs can travel to with simple 1-in-6 random encounter checks as they move through each district. This blog post really help solidify running an urban area in this way for me: knightattheopera.blogspot.com/2021/06/a-thorough-look-at-urban-gameplay-in-d.html
Cool! I will check that article out.
Thank you so much for this review! Wanting to read it even more now. Looking forward to the secret project, goodluck and enjoy!
Brilliant review.
I hope they skip past an elven source book. I just don't think there's enough adventure to be had there. Looking forward to the secret project!
Yeah, I'm looking forward to all the lore and special weapons and items they'll probably include. But it does seem like there won't be a ton to do adventure-wise. Still, I've been quite happy with most TOR stuff so far, so I'll give the team the benefit of the doubt.
@@willattheworldsend How likely is it that they'd include Mirkwood in the elven source book? There's obviously the halls of Thranduil there, and the rest of Mirkwood and Dol Guldur would provide plenty of adventure opportunity.
That's a good question. Mirkwood wouldn't be one of the Realms of the Three Rings, but it certainly could add to a book focused on Elven lands. Mirkwood did feature very prominently in the first edition of The One Ring so I'm not sure yet how much Francesco and Gareth want to retread old material.
I'd like to hear more about how you handle travel events, or think they should be handled, in lieu of the official travel rules.
I have been trying to come up with new Journey rules but I haven't figured it out yet. But if I even get the rules working I will share it on here.
Also do we have this road map somewhere public to see?
It hasn't been official posted anywhere. Gareth Hanrahan has a newsletter you can sign up through his website where he has mentioned some things, various interviews on youtube with him or Francesco Nepitello have talked about other bits and Dan Algstrand, who does the layout for the books, confirmed the next book's name in a comment on one of the TOR Facebook pages. So it's from a bunch of different sources all over the place.
Been playing through the solo rules with my partner re taking Moria. Has been very fight focused so far with the first and second halls being contested. Looking forward to see where Balin wants to send us.
Please share your thoughts about Moria Through The Doors of Durin. If you have played with the new solo mode I'd be very interested to hear what you think! As well, what are you hoping will be included in "The Realms of the Three Rings"?
Great video! What's The Realms of the Three Rings? Is that a new book?

Thanks for this very important coverage! Love your content!
Love your content! Thanks for this very important coverage!
Thank you for the video. Does 5e LotR support Strider Mode?
As far as I know, Strider Mode has only been made for The One Ring. However, I think it would still work perfectly well because most of the elements for solo play are just tables that help determine what happens next. You might have to make a few modifications but it shouldn't be too hard. Also, if you look at the new Moria Shadow of Khazad-dum book I think it has solo rules in it. The One Ring version of the book does at least.
Thank you for the reply I’ll check out Moria solo. Another question for you: does the 5e version have more magic craft/spells than the One Ring?
@@Wilhuf1 Yes it does. TOR doesn't have anything really magical. The closest it gets is certain abilities or equipment can be used to automatically gain a Success on a roll by spending a point of Hope. LOTR5e is still pretty low on magic compared to D&D but the crafts are certainly more magical than anything in TOR.
Can One play Strider Mode with the 5e Version?
