    Hi! First, the shader looks amazing, thank you very much! I have a question, once I trigger the Play button the camera that follows the character doesnt show the exact as I set the shader, eg. the character's outline are the color of the character and blue boxes the same, how I fix that? Thanks in advance!

    does anyone have issue with 'wall'/texture filling the screen once the game is packaged? edit: it's literally because of the outline shader- i have no idea why, it looks like generic Unreal texture filling out the whole screen... (in editor it looks perfect!)

    Thank you for this, big thanks. I seem to be having 1 minor issue though, on my landmass in my scene. When the view gets closer to the ground I can see the outline on my land perimeter in the distance, but when I go up it disappears. How can I completely get rid of it, like not have it show up on my floor/landscape at all? My set dress all the way in the back is fine, the lines don't show up. But even decreasing the Max Draw Distance parameter to 0 STILL makes it show up on my land. Thanks again. Cheers

    I've been trying out various methods of doing outlines in UE and one constant thing I encounter is artifacts (blur / flickering) on the outline that's placed outside of mesh (so, by the naming used in this video - the issue is present when you set "Outside Strokes DO" to true) when you move around / shake the camera. So far I've pinpointed the antialiasing to be causing this and it's most appararent on bright backgrounds. Has any of you guys found a solution to this problem? EDIT: I'm using UE 5.3.2, tbh I haven't checked whether this problem persists on other engine versions.

    Hi. I tried to do as you show in the end of wideo- to add outline shader to this toon shader. I just simply ADDED all this toon shader (to pin A) and whole OutlineShaderCode do pin B, and output ofc to Emmisive Color of material. Dont know if sth more must be done here but I couldnt get that sharp effect(good looking toneshader + beautifulsharp outlines). My image is kind blurry and almost none outlines are drawn at all.Seems like ToonShader part is neglecting most outlines. I also tried to use this both shaders in scene(as 2 postprocess volumes)- look better but still when I hit play I see less outlines than in viewport editor. Any idea,hint how to achieve this 31.00 minute effect you are presenting? (with use of your 2 shaders?) EDIT: after playing with all possible switches/parameters in MaterialInstance of IT I managed to get quite better resuklt (main fault was because of custom depth buffer- OFC I should turn this one OFF;) ) but still not sharp as yours. Will play more with them, maybe just Black And White for basić colors for light and shadow and will see how much I will get close to your effect. TNX for great tutorials

  • @alienrenders
    @alienrenders หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm only partway through the video, but at the part where you create the edge detection shader for normals, instead of using distance (which has square roots), it's faster and more accurate to use dot product. A dot product is the correct way to compare normals. It will give you 1 for normals that are equal. And -1 for normals that face away. So you can use "one minus" node on each before adding them or just do 4 - total after you've added them all up. You will get more accurate results.

    • @alienrenders
      @alienrenders หลายเดือนก่อน

      Something else to be aware is that if you use the stencil buffer, that actor will ALWAYS be drawn no matter what. It will never get culled. And the order in which they get drawn in the stencil buffer is completely random. This means that if you have two actors overlapping, the outline color from the actor that is further away can bleed through on the outline of the actor in front.

    • @kamilbeben9900
      @kamilbeben9900 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alienrenders Won't the second bug you've pointed out be fixed by what he's done at 1:01:43 ? Outline is drawn only if SceneDepth is equal to CustomDepth, so if something else is placed between the camera and custom depth object it's not supposed to bleed through.

    • @alienrenders
      @alienrenders หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kamilbeben9900 The second bug is explicitly when both objects have outlines. You can no longer guarantee what order the stencil buffer is written. The custom depth buffer cannot help here.

    • @kamilbeben9900
      @kamilbeben9900 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alienrenders I see. I had no luck reproducing this and haven't found anything in the docs, but that doesn't really mean anything as unreal documentation can be extremely lacking at times. Are you speaking from experience, or have you read about stencil buffer behavior somewhere? If the latter, could you please point me where to look at? I'd like to have a better understanding of what I'm working with.

    Evans, your breakdown is great. However, do you have somewhere this project file for download? Or the Ready To Go Blueprint, that can be used to exchange with any custom mesh? I tried to replicate everything step by step. But when I am going to assign an Animation from the SK_Mannequin, it's not going to translate over to the Mixamo Rig. The process fails by minute 46. Not sure why, because I thought it would actually automatically re-target. But it's not working. Do you have a video that explains the process with a Mixamo Character? That would be dope.Thank you so much and keep rocking, cheers.
