The MOST EXCITING Hike? From Zermatt (Schwarsee) to the Matterhorn Hornlihutte
A hike from the beautiful village of Zermatt to the Hornlihutte on the mighty Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. Incredible views in every direction every step. Challenging but so exciting, it's as far as you can hike on the Matterhorn before you need to start climbing.
And to lean against the wall of the Matterhorn at the end, speechless!

It's a great mountain in Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) but not to be taken lightly. Every year there are so many reports of accidents and call outs. So I planned well. And I still managed to not go the way I'd planned! The upside of that is I hiked the Heather Terrace rather than the North Ridge and it was stunning. Definitely recommend it.

    Great video mate. Planning at least the first part of this hike to the hut in September. Does the portion from the hut to the summit ever feel sketchy/scary? Or is it just hard. Trying to see if it’s right for my wife and I.

    • @GavinMetheringham
      @GavinMetheringham 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cheers. So it's the top part that's a bit sketchy but if the weather is ok - no risk of rain and not windy - and you're comfortable on the terrain then I'd say go for it. It looks worse than it is I think because you can't really see from a distance where you actually walk. But the path is visible as you go. I was by myself and that never helps - the doubts creep in!! There wasn't any point I had to scramble. The part from the hut to the ridge is just steep. The only concern would be snow so I would suggest hiking poles if you have them. I was glad I had mine. The only other thing was I was willing to turn around at any point and walk back down. It was such a great hike I didn't feel like I needed to get to the top if the weather did close in. It felt like a grown up hike not to mess around with! I don't have loads of experience and am not especially fit but it was ok. And one of the best bits is you can chill on the top and get a drink and a ride down so taking your time going up is totally doable (as long as you get up there before the last cable car down!) Hope that helps.

      I did another walk that was not quite as epic but I loved it. If you Google it the pictures are pretty cool - Mt Niesen. Video also on my channel - my first video actually. More ascent - 1700m rather than 1300m but no sketchy bits, just a lush hike and a cable car down. Could be an option. And it's 2362m high instead of 2970m so snow not an issue in summer. Back up plan maybe although there are great walks all over that area. Hope to get back there this summer.

    Great video!! Thank you for showing how the trail looks up at the top towards the summit, that is super helpful. It looked like the trail markers were quite hard to find - is there risk of getting off track easily? I don't have a ton of alpine hiking experience due to my location (new york city) - is this a doable hike for someone in reasonable shape, or is there another summit you'd recommend for those with limited experience? Thanks!!

    • @GavinMetheringham
      @GavinMetheringham 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! It's a pretty OK hike in terms of markers. Swiss paths are generally well marked and the painted red/white on this walk were fine but I'd always recommend having a map or some other way to navigate. On the top part there are makers too and the path is defined enough. Knowing what the top part looks like helps for sure! I wasn't sure if it was doable when I was up there but it wasn't as difficult as I thought. Exposed in parts but OK. I'd feel much more confident doing it a second time! My main consideration was the weather and would have had no hesitation going back the way I'd come up if the weather had turned or the cloud had come down or too much snow was remaining higher up. Its a proper mountain! Its a lot of ascent but if reasonably fit and you allow time to enjoy it I think it would probably be OK, weather permitting. (Having a cable car to come back down changes things so much too!!). In terms of alternatives, the area is full of them. I did Niesen two days later and loved that too. Easier but more ascent I think and a funicular that goes to the top. I did a video on that too. But I did Niesen out of curiosity mainly. There's a great resource here: www.journeyera.com/category/switzerland/ which gives loads of hikes around Interlaken, Murren etc like the Eiger trail. Definitely worth a look and plenty that are a bit easier than Schilthorn but still give amazing scenery so might be a good place to start. Switzerland is stunning so wherever you go you'll love it! Happy hiking.

    Been there three times, one of my absolute favourite places in Switzerland! Next time, take the mountain hiking path ("Bergwanderweg") via Klein-Hütten back! Also very beautiful, plus, in winter, when the path you walked is icy and becomes dangerous further uphill, the mountain hiking path is way more safe to walk! Only in the beginning (when coming from Wasserauen and walking to Seealpsee) it's more steep and exhausting, but then you each about 1220m and have really nice views! Plus, less people are walking there. The mountain hiking path is absolutely safe to walk for everyone, no mountain experience and equipment needed, no worries for people who are afraid of heights.

My mom and I got to the top of the mountain at exactly 18:00 but didn't realize that the cable car actually closed at 17:55 (yes, we missed it by 5 minutes 🤦‍♂️). We instantly panicked because were extremely tired from the hike up, and were out of food and water. We climbed up without any hiking equipment, and just regular running shoes. My mouth was extremely dry and I was fully expecting water to be at the top, but the building was closed. After the door to the building wouldn't open and after finding out that the cable car was closed, we wasted no more time and just stared making our way down as fast as we could. By the time we got to the stream by the rocks we were so thirsty that we actually decided to fill our bottles up with the river water. I was scared to drink the water because I didn't think it was clean so I just put it in my mouth, swirled it around a bit and then spit it out, over and over. We kept pushing until we made it to the restaurant, and then we filled our bottles up there with cleaner water. At this point we knew we would make it back to our hostel safely, but that if would still be a long hike. We ended up making it back to our hostel at around 22:30, because it was even further than Murren. What a day

One comment; at 10.38, you say that using trekking poles , "they will REDUCE their energy consumption overall". That statement is not correct.. Using trekking poles CORRECTLY will transfer some of the energy to your shoulder muscles and reduce the energy consumption from your leg muscles. Should muscles get little usage, overall, when compared to your leg muscle (too much!!!) so using poles will distribute the load which is a good thing. But using poles will NEVER REDUCE REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION. The laws of physics doesn't allow that to happen. Again, this energy is simply using other muscles...but in the end, the total energy going uphill is the same. Also, many hikers, dare I say most hikers rarely use them to "push off" but use them as an ornament. If you are not PUSHING OFF WITH THEM when ascending, a hiker is carrying extra weight. Thanks again for your video....lots of good tips.....!

      Hi. Thanks for the comment. Good to know. Physics is physics. Totally agree on the pushing off and ornament comments too. No point taking them unless you use them properly. Cheers.

      One of your tips, mark your trekking poles with your name, is a great one. I just marked mine so no one can say they are theirs!

    Great video!, you've inspired us to do this hike when we are there in August. How long do you think the hike took you from Murren to the top?

      Hi. Glad you enjoyed it! My watch said 7hrs 12mins, But, I was back and forward, sitting for timelapses and going slow. So I think 6hrs-6.5hrs would do it. The scenery is stunning so avoid being squeezed for time if you can.

    They allow you to camp at Elisabetta?

    • @GavinMetheringham
      @GavinMetheringham ปีที่แล้ว

      We were there just before the season started and there were two tents there already so we did. But I don't know if it would be allowed now.

      Oh. Well that was a good idea! Go before they open! But I guess technically it was illegal since it was below 2500m. (I would have done the same.) Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful.

    You drank six liters of water per day?????? Was that between the two of you?

    • @GavinMetheringham
      @GavinMetheringham ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, between us but we only ever carried a maximum of 2 litres each. Loads of chances to fill up along the route - easily possible to get by with carrying less.

    I'm sorry if I missed it, but did you share the dates you went? I'm reconsidering my sleeping bag based on your advice.

    • @GavinMetheringham
      @GavinMetheringham ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Not sure I included the dates either! It was 7th-17th July. In terms of sleeping bags, mine really did have the stuffing already knocked out of it. I think a decent 3 season bag will do OK but I became a big fan of comfortable sleeping afterwards!

    Looks like great time. I am also planning to do a trip in the end of June with my dad. In the video I've noticed that you've camped with a tent along the way, from your experience is pretty "easy" to find/plan camping place along the route or did you experience some complications?

    • @GavinMetheringham
      @GavinMetheringham ปีที่แล้ว

      There are campsites in most places and they need no booking which is great. But obviously the pack weight goes up. Still, wouldn't have done it and other way.

      @@GavinMetheringham thank you for sharing, the only thing that worried me a bit was if one day we show up and it's full. It would be a great video for many people to watch about the camping experience along the route since resting logistics and packing are kind of the most important topics at least on my list atm 🙂

    When you say ‘the right sleeping bag’ - what season bag do you recommend? Compared to what season you took with you?

    • @GavinMetheringham
      @GavinMetheringham ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sarah. Great question. It depends on how much or little you feel the cold somewhat but I took a Rab three season bag that had definitely seen better days. Ok for one or two nights but 10/11 nights of cold builds up! It packed small and was light but that was about it. It's the one thing I put right as soon as I could. I bought a Mountain Equipment Classic 500. It cost a fair bit (although I got it in a sale), weighed 250g more and took up a little more space but it makes all the difference for me. Never realised how important a good sleep on a multi-day hike was! I think a 0°C/32°F three season bag by a good manufacturer will work FINE and then it's cost vs weight vs pack size which determines the bag. The Classic range is good and the 500 will give a good nights sleep. It's a good all rounder but there are plenty of others out there. Hope that helps.
