Hi everyone! I am Marcus in my third year of Geography and Aviation at the University of Waterloo, and I'm also a student pilot at Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre doing my Airline Transport Pilot training. Since I wanted to document and evaluate my growth and experience during my 4 years at this University, I am using this opportunity to let everyone know what it’s like to be a student at uWaterloo and a student pilot at WWFC!
My Longest Flight: 300 Nautical Miles as a Student Pilot at the University of Waterloo!

Hello, I'm also interested in join the aviation and geography program in waterloo. Im just wondering if data managment is consider university math for the program?
Hello! Unforutnaterly, I'm not too sure about that, but I do recommend you to ask Shanon Cary, the undergrad environment erecruitment coordinator and her email address is: scary@uwaterloo.ca
Hi marcus. I am an aspiring pilot. I have one question. Why did you not opt for a cadet pilot program with an airline? Does the waterloo program also have any affiliation with any airline?
Hey there! I did not choose any cadet pilot programs in airlines just cuz that'll only give you your licenses and you're fixed to work with them, so for any reason if you can't be a pilot anymore, there's no backup career options for me. Studying at uWaterloo not only allows me to earn my pilot licenses but also a legitimate university degree, which offers a ton of backup career options! And yes, waterloo aviation is well known by some airlines like Jazz aviation and sunwing. We used to have a direct entry first officer for sunwing from this program but since it's merging with WestJet this opportunity is gone, however, we have some scholarships sponsored by WestJet and Jazz and Porter airlines every year and some might have interview opportunities at that airline too!
@@pilotmarcusgot it. Thanks for the reply. I have one last question. Do you see any international students in your program? I ask this because I want to know how they plan to work for a Canadian airline without resident/work permit. Will airlines sponsor their visa to work or are they planning to go to their home country after getting their training.
The way you sighed after landing at YKF, is how i felt after my first spin lesson.
❤❤
Wow! It's beautiful!
Its just like my first flight at Seneca except your instructor isn't making you cry
What did Seneca instructors do to you 💀💀
You go to aviation school while simultaneously enjoying life. I thought these two things were mutually exclusive of each other?? Maybe that's just a Seneca thing. Please explain
For sure there are some tough moments, it’s just how I wanted to perceive things and make the most out of it so it’s still enjoyable. That’s a great point though, I might make a video to share things in the program that are not as enjoyable or things that I struggled with
If I go 150 miles away and then turn around and come back does that count as my 300 mile XC?
Negative! For your 300NM cross country its gotta be 300NM radius from the point of departure.
Do you offer a transfer program from Seneca Polytechnic Aviation to Waterloo Aviation? Please help me
That I’m not entirely sure, but I’ll send you the email of our aviation program manager and he’ll probably be able to answer this question: brodenhurst@uwaterloo.ca
Good job Pilot Marcus! Cheering for you from YPQ!
Hey, I've been watching your videos since grade 12! I ended up not choosing waterloo and decided to go to another university but I still enjoy your flight videos :) I'm going to start my flight training next year so your videos are really helpful! Thank you for these amazing videos and I hope you upload them more often haha
How competitive is the admissions for uWaterloo coming from highschool? I am Albertan, and have a 75 in physics 30, 85 in chem 30, 90% in math 31 and got a 90% on math 30-1 diploma, 70% in english 30-1 and I am currently doing social studies 30-1, with a 80% currently. Do I have a shot?
Hello, from what I know, getting into this program is fairly competitive as the admission average has gone up recently to around mid to high 80s. So with the grades you provided, I think you will have a good shot at this in my opinion, but don't quote me though because you never know who you're competing with. Nevertheless, good luck!
@@pilotmarcus Are you still liking the program? Is there any networking for potential jobs or instructing positions that you had?
@@wg4112 I like the program a lot personally! We have a society called UWAS (University of Waterloo Aviation Society) this society organizes formal events to network and connect with professionals in the aviation industry, and they also organize events for aviation students to get along with each other. All in all, this program (and the aviation industry) is a tight knit community and most people knows each other. As for jobs, Waterloo airport does hire people to work for customer service for low cost airlines as well as ground crew. Our flight centre also offers job like dispatch and ground crew too. When it comes to flight instructing, that’ll be after you have your commercial license, but before that the flight centre does recruit for volunteer TA for the ground school.
Can you share how you got into this program and your grades while applying?
Yeah, this has been my dream program since high school, so I worked really hard on my academics and signed up for extracurricular activities relevant to aviation. This included doing a couple of intro flights and more! When you apply to the University of Waterloo, you'll be asked to complete the Additional Information Form, so make sure to include all of your experiences and volunteer work there. Grades are also an important factor, and to answer your question, I applied with an average of around the mid-90s.
@@pilotmarcus Amazing, I was also wondering how many students they take in per year?. My grade averages are my main concern when considering applying to this program (the mid-70s), which worries me a lot, I am currently in grade 11 at BC and hope to complete my passion for aviation in this program.
@@VincentZhong-ow5xj from what I saw it seemed like they have been accepting more and more students every year after COVID, I’m not entirely sure how many they’ll accept the coming years but do your best in academics, and you’ll have no regrets 😉
@@pilotmarcus Thank you so much for the information given, I hope I see myself in this program soon!
hey, I'm a 15 year old living in Ghand and would like to know if there's anyway I can contact you for some knowledge on how I can follow my passion of becoming an airline pilot. Please let me know if you would be of nay help🙏🏿
Hello! For sure, feel free to reach out to me via instagram @pilot._.marcus
If you prefer email though, feel free to reach out through m2cheung@uwaterloo.ca
Hey, your flight to CYZE, on a single engine, doesn't the CARs require you to be within gliding distance to shore, as you're not wearing a PFD?
Yes, I was flying at 6500' and I calculated that I was within gliding distance the whole time :)
I am from Hong Kong. very interested in the waterloo aviation program. can i dm you.
@@tsetse-c6m ya for sure!
I used to fly way back in 1980 with UofW club at Breslau airport, CGYKT a Cessna150. I remember it very well. Haven't been back in 44yrs. From your vid, indeed it has changed.
Flooded engines happen to all of us. Seems to happen more often the further away from home base. I fly a Mooney out of cykf.
You motivate me to try getting into this unviersity for aviation.. thank you!
AYY my mom works for the japanese ministry of foreign affairs
I want to know, when u are flying and suddenly you want to go washroom. How?`
You'd usually go to the washroom before your flight just to avoid having to do it inside the plane, but if you really really have to, you gotta use your bottle
@@pilotmarcus haha ok. Thanks
lol what a luxury to get a full stop on a xc, my school packs the schedule so we only get to do a stop and go
That’s kinda unfortunate 😭, but doing full stops increases your chance of getting stuck by 100% 💀

He's back! Great job with the XC mate! Massive appreciation for how much of a production this is. Keep at it brother love watching your journey! Also, I'm flying high-wings and am jealous of you sitting on the wing eating breaky, might switch it up 😂
Nah you’ll eventually fly a low wing or event a mid wing 😉
As always, your flight vlogs never fail to motivate me to work harder. Glad to see you're doing well Marcus
Hey man, really enjoyed the video. Im going into my final year of highschool and will apply to waterloo. Your videos have been really interesting! Can I ask when you were accepted into the program and what your average was?
I realise your from hong kong so it might work a bit different, but still interested! :)
Hello! I was accepted into the program in early May of 2022, and my overall average was in the mid 90s. Good luck on your school work and hopefully I'll see you on campus next year :)
@@pilotmarcus Hope to see you there too! Do you know if the other students in the program also have mid 90s? Im probably going to finish with low 90s and im wondering what yo think my chances are?
@@Robot_ManYT You'll do just fine with low 90s. See you soon!
I know the admission average was in the mid 80s in my year and it also depends on your additional information form that you’ll submit with your application!
How much is the total cost of tuition and the cost of ppl cpl and ifr
total cost of tuition would be around $85k to $90k (ik it's crazy expensive), it could change throughout the years so the best way to check it is through this website: uwaterloo.ca/aviation/fees
@@pilotmarcus thanks!
as a student at Seneca colleges flight program, I am actually so jealous that you guys get to fly out of a controlled airport and we don't. Peterboroughs mf so half the time you got busy circuits and potential traffic conflicts
I've been there too and I totally agree with you man 💀, are you guys allowed to go to CYKF? If so we will definitely welcome you!
@@pilotmarcus oh yeah, but its pretty far out of the way especially for a cross country or other flight training event. If I do end up there by chance, then I'll certainly let you know what I think
@@megawave79 yessir!!
This is such a fun vlog! Looking forward to the next one
Hey can i apply for this program after my college and do they accept ielts band 6.5 not less than 5.5 nd I'm from arts background, not good at mathematics
Hello! Just to let you know I am not in charge nor responsible for university application inquiries and I recommend you to reach out to the faculty requirement coordinator for that. According to the uw website though, the overall minimum requirement is 6.5 and there are individual requirements for each part of the IELTS, so if you get that you should be fine (I’m not entirely sure if your ranking against other students would matter though) and if you apply to the aviation program, they do require a certain level of maths and you would need to take a certain math course to apply for this program, feel free to check their admission requirements website to see where you need in order to get into this program! You should still be able to apply with an arts background as long as you take the required courses for the admission requirements
❤🔥
This is sick. You should do more short content videos to keep us posted with your process

Which online course did you use for PPL and CPL?
I did my ground school at WWFC, so I actually did my PPL and CPL courses in person.

hi! If you don’t mind me asking, what were your gr11, gr12 averages to get into the program? Thanks in advance I would love to go to this program in the future ❤
