Welcome back, good reaction. One of the great things about BABYMETAL that stands out (more than any other band that I know) is that they don't stick to one formula, one style or whatever. Every song is different, they make a point of straying and never sticking to just one thing, one style etc. 'Karate' was the lead single for their second album (2016). It is about fighting adversity, when life knocks you down and everything seems too hard so you're hurt and crying, its about standing up and fighting on, helping each other through the hard times. They used karate to illustrate this because as a Japanese martial art it reflects their culture - that was a very important thing for them as well. As with a lot of their songs it is also about always moving forwards. In the video the figures in white were the girls all along and they were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight against. They beat the first, the second knocked them down but they got up to eventually defeat themselves (did you notice the reflections of each of the girls in their own eyes when the masks shattered and it was revealed as them? Not many people spot that). They did watch a lot of martial arts movies to get ideas for the choreo as they wanted it to look as authentic as possible (but they are not martial artists). Moa catching the fly was a nod to Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. Mr Miyagi may have used chop sticks (and it may have taken him two or three films before he caught one), Moa caught her fly with her eyes closed - first time .... and she let it go. We all know Moa wouldn't hurt a fly. This song and video won 2 awards. "Best Metal Video in MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2016" and "Best Metal Song in 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards". A spectacular live version with all the lights, staging etc for you to watch would be from Budokan 2021 (you could always do another reaction) or you could watch them at a festival with no special effects etc performing in the English rain at Download 2016.

It's one of the few MV that really worth to watch for the first time and understanding the meaning of the song a little bit, as for the live version pay attention my next suggestion. "Karate" is one of their stronger weapons along with "Road Of Resistance" from 2nd album "Metal Resistance" released in 2016. It's an uplifting song about keep fighting besides the obstacles no matter what, and if you take a closer look at the end you'll see in the eyes of their rivals that they're fighting against no other than themselves. Some fans also find anime vibes on BabyMetal songs, the only other song I could find with anime vibes besides this one and "Divine Attack - Shingeki", is "Syncopation" another banger. They watched several footage before making this song, one of those were "Karate Kid" old movie, that's why you see MoaMetal catching a bug, that's a reference to the movie, after this she became the bug catcher expert when traveling on live tour lol. The bats and the concrete blocks testing strength is another infamous Karate reference. Btw just in case, the band playing behind in this MV are hired actors, they got their own set of musicians when performing live called Kami Band, they're not always the same musicians but currently this year they've been playing with a westerners band unlike early era after 2012 when they had a Japanese band. You can enjoy the live version with the blaster sound of the East Kami Band watching Download Festival 2016 among many others but this one is safe to react. Now with that being said, last weekend they played this at Rock Am Ring Festival in Germany and they did it like never before plus new super cool outfits or battle dresses, it was really beautiful and there's a proshot clip around but I'm not sure if that is safe for a reaction, you can try if you want, trust me, it'll worth the effort. Also another cool version to watch and meet the new Metalverse subgroup is Karate live at PIA Arena MM 2023, they got their own songs but you can start with this introduction. Next suggestion: - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official MV (2015). This is simply excellent again!! I have been a fan of the Doobie Brothers for a long time. This song is just timeless. It still swings. Really something for Home Free. So great sung, so great harmonies, bone-feeling bass, But for me it's Adam who makes it truly phenomenal. He nailed it. The vocal percussion is just inhumane. So unbelievably good. For me the very best beatboxer/vocal percussionist/mouth artist there is.

I think you'd enjoy the live version of Home Free's viral Sea Shanty Medley that they released last September. It was recorded in December in Mankato Minnesota, Adam Rupp's home town. I never thought I'd say that an a'cappella group can make a bunch of really old maritime folk songs rock the house, but by now you shouldn't be surprised.

I grew up on classic rock & am a big fan of the Doobie Brothers & had their albums. "Listen To The Music" was a big hit for them back in 1972. Love that Home Free is keeping this great music alive & introducing it to the younger generation. The guys did a really nice job of this song. Austin was great for the lead & loved the background harmonies of Rob, Chance & Tim. Adam killed it on the vocal percussion again. He always comes up with some new & interesting sounds.

Mark creates atmosphere with his playing which fits the song itself. The other thing about his guitar solos is that they are part of the song, not just the insertion of some technical wizardry with no relevance.

From a little research, she was born Victoria Holub and grew up in the Minnesota suburbs. Her dad Joe sells wine amongst other things, and she has at least 1 sister. Her Mom's name escapes me right now, but I hope God guides and protects her as her career progresses. 🙏 Maybe, we'll see her on a Christmas special in a few years.

Hi NavyDoc, I’m Joe and Ron is my friend. I saw this but forgot to comment. No one expects Tori. Your reaction is fairly accurate and representative. I’ve been requesting reactions to Tori since November and TH-cam introduced me to her in mid October. There are a bunch of short videos and some long form. That has been growing at a good clip now. I see some recommendations in the comments. All good. I’ll put in my 2¢ below with her newest. This has only a little to do with Karen. Carpenters appeared on a Perry Como Special and they and Perry did a medley where they traded singing their respective hits. So Karen wound up singing one line of Perry’s big hit, It’s Impossible. My friend in the UK, Dan Wesley who made a couple of videos about Tori’s singing abilities. He’s a Musician/singer/producer. He wondered, what if Karen had sung the entire song. So he reached out to Tori with that idea. Turns out it’s one of her favorite songs. Who knew? She agreed to do the song with Dan. Given he’s in England and she’s in Minnesota, logistics wasn’t a thing. So they did the same type of music in boxes video. Just fewer boxes as it was just piano and voices. This is Tori at her finest just being Tori with a song that’s not really a Carpenters cover. Not that there’s anything wrong with Carpenters covers. It was recently revealed that Jim and Tori’s next cover is; Close To You. In the mean time if you’re going on a Tori deep dive, this is her newest. I’ll do the opposite of Ron, I’ll undersell it. She did OK, just OK. I mean she can barely sing in tune. Poor dear. So you can be relaxed and not worry about her singing. It’s average at best. OK did I undersell it enough? I have the same sentiment every time I listen to this song. Although it's a 16 minute long song, I don't want it to end. The outro is probably one of the most beautiful outros of any song. And I thnk that's why I don't want it to end. It's like looking at something so beautiful that you can't but keep constantly looking.

I can't say I'm surprised, but your reaction was so profound that it surprised even me. I am so glad I recommended that you listen to the original first, because the impact would not have been the same without knowing it well. Tori has said that her goal is not to be Karen Carpenter. She is not trying to imitate. Her voice just naturally sounds very much like Karen's. I have never heard a voice like this in 50 years, so timeless. Tori has an original song which I see is posted by another viewer below. She also has a number of shorts on TikTok of various Carpenter songs as well as other artists. She is coming out shortly with a version similar to this of their famous hit, Close to You. I and another gentleman who is close to Tori's journey will recommend sort of a playlist for you so be on the lookout. In the interim, I will give you one that is phenomenal. But again listen to the original if you are not familiar. It is the Bacharach/David Medley again with Jim Wilkas harmonizing with Richard's part. I really appreciate all you do and your commentary was well received. By the way, I would not call this a cover. It is a recreation or reincarnation. As an added bit of information, Tori was invited The end of April to appear at the Carpenter's 55th anniversary celebration in LA. She performed two songs, and unexpectedly, Richard Carpenter showed up and she had the honor of meeting him and speaking with him backstage! Peace out.

This is such a perfect video for those experiencing Tori for the first time. Seeing reactions like yours never gets old. Jim Wilkas' technique a' la Leonid and Friends in showing all the parts is masterful given the complex overdubbing of the original harmonies. That being said, as much as Tori shares many qualities with Karen, she very much has her own voice and has a rather impressive range. There is another Carpenters tribute she did that was augmented by Jim Wilkas (Tori's collaborater in this video) and is very entertaining. It's a medley of Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs that the Carpenters would often perform live. I don't think you would be disappointed. Link is below. From your reaction I am not sure you understood what the song is about. It is basically all about Whitley Bay and the amusement park called Spanish City near Newcastle where Mark grew up and spent his formative, read teenage, years. We had a carnival or fair in my little hometown once a year and that was were we'd hang out with friends, go on rides and/or try to catch the eye of a pretty girl. The Tunnel of Love is a bigger ride, so hence the title. For me it was either bumper cars or merry-go-round. Small town, as I said.
