Giving Star Ratings to Every Book I Read in 2023
Thank you so much for making this video- so helpful
Finished the sprints 😊 I haven't started my Feb book yet as I have a couple I need to finish first. I'm excited to choose my book and start! See you for the February live 😊
I finished Witchcraft for Wayward Girls last week and it kind of broke me 😭. I would recommend it for sure, but will say it is a lot more serious in tone and content than a lot of Hendrix’s other books. Excited to participate in the Literally Dead Book Club discussion next month.
I think if you're interested in the book coming out in July called I'm Too Old for This you might want to check out An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good. I read it last year and found it (& the sequel!) so very charming ... if murder can be charming 😂
Thanks for this years challange. I am very motivated to work on my TBR in 2025. For january I chose Jesmyn Ward Let us descend and I finished it in time. It was underwhelming, but okay. This rainy day pick will be a strech but I find something.
I can recommend Victorian Psycho. I got an ARC and just finished it the other day. The book is very twisted and funny.
I missed the live stream on the weekend but I finished Pines by Blake Crouch for the January prompt and am already reading the sequel. Great start to TBR Spin!
That's awesome! I've had an ebook of Pines for a long time and still haven't gotten around to it! But I really loved Recursion and Dark Matter, so I'll have to make time for it soon
I’ve just decided, in the dying days of January, to join the challenge!!! Gonna put together a stack now. But… I might just use one I’ve already read this month for the January prompt, because time is running out 😅
I love it!! Yay! I'm glad you're joining 😁
Alright late but I got my stack and finished We Used to Live Here for the first prompt!
Alright I literally say I keep saving this for a rainy day so Unraveling by Karen Lord is happening!
Also question, what’s the rule about reading more than one book from your tbr spin pile in a month? Do you just add in another one come next spin?
Yup! Just make sure your stack is equal to the number of months that are left in the year before the next spin 😊
I’ve read both Khaled Hosseini books you mentioned in the video multiple times in their Persian translation. Recently, I bought The Kite Runner in English and can’t wait to read it in its original language before revisiting A Thousand Splendid Suns!
I have read many of your tbr spin books and they are so good. I need to read iron flame and order onyx storm! Looking forward to your wrap ups for these, you can do it!
Yay! I have a feeling that my TBR Spin reading is going to be great this year 😊
Totally agree with your thoughts on The House With Good Bones! The atmosphere was amazing. The ladybugs! 🐞😱
Yes! So creepy 😬
You have some great books on your list, including several of the nonfiction titles. Empire of Pain is incredibly well done but equally anger inducing. You might want to have Human Kind saved to help lift your spirits afterwards.
Good to know 😂 and it totally makes sense because even the little I already know about the opioid crisis makes me angry lol
You’re never going to read infinite jest
There's a book called The Gilded Nexus of Prosperity, and it talks about how using some secret techniques you can attract a lot of money, it's not some bullshit law of attraction, it's the real deal
I downloaded that book yesterday, and after five minutes of reading, I had to take a shower because my mind was blown away.. It's terrible how the elite are hiding the truth from us about gaining wealth
I'll buy you dinner for this recommendation
Infinite Jest is actually a lot of fun, rather than just being 'challenging for challenging's sake'. My only advice is stick it out past page 37 - there's about a two-page section that I found completely intolerable and stopped me reading the first time I tried it, but then that style never really comes back for the rest of the book
Exactly my experience! The super dense stuff is mostly in footnotes, which can be really long, I think one was 25 pages long! But you can skip the footnotes with absolutely no damage to the story. Also, don’t be put off if you don’t quite understand some references in the beginning, it will all make sense eventually. The characters in this book are great. I read it a long time ago and I still remember them.
Thanks for the tips!! This is giving me the exact motivation I need to get started haha
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a book I loved so much that I bought a copy for my little sister when she qualified as a nurse in 2003.
I'm really excited for that one! I only hear the best things about it
What happens when you have to swap out a book during the spin? Will the original book stay on your 2025 TBR?
Yup! They'll stay on the 25 in 2025 list, so I should read them no matter what haha I just got so frustrated with the idea that some books came off my TBR Spin stack and then just sit there!
American Psycho is legit disturbing. Be warned.
Infinite Jest is worth it!
I haven't read The Shard yet, but several other books by Bret Easton Ellis and American Psycho has definitely been the most disturbing.
Oh boy! Hopefully I can handle it haha
The color purple is a really good book! It was published awhile ago, made into a movie in the 90s by Spielberg, made into a Broadway musical in the 2010s, and the 2023 movie was a movie musical based on the broadway musical. So there are narrative threads that are picked up and lost over these four iterations of the story. I still think the original book is best, didn’t love the 2023 movie and while I liked the Spielberg movie there are some narrative threads that he cut that are tough. Nonetheless, I definitely recommend the book and seeing what your thoughts are on the adaptations!
Thank you so much for this comment! It's no wonder I was so mixed up haha I'm excited to read the book and then see what I think of the movies
I loved the His Dark Materials trilogy and have those same editions for books two and three but haven’t been able to find The Golden Compass in that edition haha
so funny haha that's the only bad thing about collections where the spines line up! If you can't get them all together, it's so hard to complete the set!
I just finished Humankind: A hopeful history. It took me a couple months to read but I really enjoyed it. It's one of those books once you finish it you wish everyone would read. Cheers!
I read the uninhabitable earth and found it to be a surprisingly hopeful and quick read!
This is such great news, I'm a bit less intimidated by it now haha
A Thousand Splendid Suns was my TBR spin book for this month. It was excellent ❤
I'm glad you liked it! I'll definitely have to get it after The Kite Runner
Hope you have a great day!❤ Love your content!
thank you!
Best of luck with all the nonfiction!!
I love monthly wrap ups the most!!
Off track
Thanks for sharing these! Do you have a StoryGraph account that I can follow?
Yes! My storygraph is FreshlyReadBooks :)
I will continue my goal from last year to not buy more books than I read. This worked surprisingly well last year. My second goal is to make half of my reading books from authors I loved before to hopefully have a better reading year than last year. I always forget that my favorite authors wrote more than one book. 😅
I'm the same way! I catch myself saying all the time that I want to read more from an author and then never make the effort to actually do it!
🐛I love a varied best of the year list! I share your interest in reading widely, and it means my best of the year is always a broad mix. I echo your sentiments about Brotherless Night. It was my pick to win the Carol Shields Prize, and I was happy to see it win the Women's Prize too (though In Defence of the Act by Effie Black was my pick to win). Wishing you a joyful reading year in 2025. Cheers!
The girl with the dragon tattoo is my favorite book but can see where it wouldn’t be for everyone. You kind of got to get through the first 80 pages. They are important but can be a slog.
I literally yesterday learned who Emily Henry was. I had confused her with Beth O'Leary whom my wife reads. I also, while low-key enjoying ACOTAR, could not make it through the second one. I can't imagine what Wing and Ruin holds lol
😂 I can't wait to see what you think of Wings and Ruin
I usually set a goal of 50, but I’m only aiming for 30-40 this year so I can really enjoy my time and not stress!
🥂📚💙
Very fun challenge. Wishing you success! My goal is to read 72 books.
very excited to follow along with you 2025 reading!! I love how organised you are with your approach <3
Just made this video myself and shouted out your channel and tbr spin, so hope that might add a few subs for you! Ambitious goals!! It's fun having a bingo board. Yes pls to monthly wrap ups and progress check ins 👍🏻 I want to focus on tbr backlist, series, and my two reading challenges as my main goals. Have a fantastic 2025 reading year!
Oooh, I love the idea of your prize being bookish merch!! So true, that I rarely allow myself that luxury. Fun goals! I'm very excited to see your monthyl wrap ups!
Thank you! Since making that my goal, I now get so excited when I see bookish merch because it feels like something I'll actually get for myself at some point haha
I absolutely love the new tbr spin set up and the first live stream was so much fun! Maybe you are interested, I'm hosting a big book reading challenge on StoryGraph, which might support your own goal.
Yeah, I had a great time with the live stream and I'm already looking forward to the next one! I joined your big book reading challenge on Storygraph (and I'm loving that my first TBR spin book is already helping me out with that goal lol)
@@FreshlyReadBooks Thank you! And I love that!
I'm proud of myself this past year! I read more books than I have any year since graduating college. I'm thankful for all of the bookish YT channels for motivating me!
❤📚📚❤️ I'm reading The Lincoln Highway as well this month! So good. Good luck reaching all of your 2025 goals.
I was just thinking a couple days ago I wanted to pick 12 books and randomly pick one each month. This is perfect! I picked my books and watched the beginning of the live stream. My first book will be John Dies at the End. 🥳
glad to have you joining in!
dont read gladwell. its overrated and should have been a thinkpiece or essay not a book. deifnitely recoomend fun house and joan didion.
Blue sisters by coco mellors 💙
I'm with you. I love Funny Story, but I always think about Book Lovers. Thanks for sharing. I added A Darker Shade of Magic to the list, and it sounds good! My favorite book this year was Frankenstein; it was a lovely surprise!
I love Robin Hobb's first trilogy, going to start on the next trilogy this year
I totally agree about your winner!
