Hey, good morning LA. Great question. I personally buy a sheet of corrugated plastic from office Depot or ace hardware. Looks like cardboard from the side, but made of plastic. Comes in white or black. The white color allows for more light to cover both sides. Cheap and easy to cut, but if you cut it to small the fish will pass by the sides. So it needs to be tight. Also, leave the top edges to really push against the top rim if it's an old style tank. Usually these corrugated plastic sheets are used for signage and may come with a metal bracket. Even so, it should only cost around five dollars.

Good question. Sadly spider wood prices have really gone up since I bought most of mine. However, if you do buy some you will need to boil it in a large saucepan for three hours. The pet supermarket does sell saturated wood for half price if it doesn't have plants on it. The nice thing about that is most of the tannic acid has already been leached out. You can buy different size landscape river rocks at Lowes. A huge bag for around fifteen dollars. I hope this information helps. Good luck

Tiffany, I feel that Petco has been he best prices on tanks. It's the tops that cost a fortune. Also watch for Petco sales when they offer a dollar per gallon.

petco has the best prices on tanks, especially whrn they offer a dollar per gallon sales. Sadly it is the covers that cost more than the tanks.

I use submersible lights attached to the underside of the lids. I don't care for light reflecting off the surface of the tank water.

I agree. The loaches become very aggressive, however they will take care of your snail problem.

Kuhli loaches

Those are khuli loaches. They are elongated fish that prefer sand bottoms because they like to sift through the sand for food. I have them in all my tanks except the 5 and 2.5 because they can be a little rambunctious in a smaller space. I love these fish because they can clean up food in places other fish cant get to. They can be bright orange with black stripes, but those are about $10. I order the black ones because they are usually less than $3.
