I make maps for Bungie's old first person shooter Marathon. For some reason.
Marathon Multiplayer [4 PLAYERS]: Carnage Soccer
Multiplayer match on Bungie's Marathon Infinity, hosted online with Aleph One in 2024. This round showcases an old Coriolis Loop map called Carnage Soccer. Before Lua, people had to get creative when they wanted janky game types. In Carnage Soccer, every time you get hit by a rocket, you receive health, and get flung in the direction where the rocket hit (as long as it's in close enough proximity). The goal being to knock other players into the lava crushers. The player with the score closest to 0 wins.
You'll notice some odd health bar behavior from the HUD; this is due to the extra health you get from rocket hits interacting with PepperHUD. Thanks to future_you5 for the film file.

From Wikipedia:
The Marathon Trilogy is a science fiction first-person shooter video game series from Bungie, originally released for Mac OS. The name Marathon is derived from the giant interstellar colony ship that provides the setting for the first game; the ship is constructed out of what used to be the Martian satellite Deimos. The three games in the series - Marathon (1994), Marathon 2: Durandal (1995), and Marathon Infinity (1996) - are widely regarded as spiritual predecessors of Bungie's Halo series.
In 2005, Bungie authorized the release of the full original Mac OS trilogy for free distribution online, which combined with Aleph One and the efforts of the fan community, now allows the entire trilogy to be played for free on any of Aleph One's supported platforms (Mac OS, Linux and Windows) [alephone.lhowon.org]. Aleph One features an online matchmaking server [metaserver.lhowon.org], allowing for much easier organization of Internet games than joining directly by IP address as had previously been required.
During a May 2023 PlayStation showcase, Bungie announced a new Marathon game. The new game is a player versus player extraction shooter that takes place within the canon of Marathon, with events occurring on Tau Ceti IV, where a console ship remains in orbit, and its 30,000 passengers have mysteriously disappeared. Players take on the role of cybernetic Runners to seek wealth and treasure on the planet. The new Marathon game will release on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, and will support cross-play and cross-save between these platforms.

Marathon Mapping Time-lapse [Night Terror from Imperium]

This episode covers the development of my Marathon Infinity multiplayer map, Night Terror, the 24th map created for my map pack, Imperium. Night Terror is unique in that it features Lua scripting written by W'rkncacnter to simulate random lightning strikes in-game, and a strike can travel through bodies of water as well. As such, it's a bit of a novelty map, but it would still work decently as ...

Cool to watch this. Marathon mapping videos are severely lacking on youtube. Would you ever consider doing tutorial videos of mapping?
This is fascinating stuff. I'd love to see something like a scripting time-lapse or commentary video where we get to see how Treellama, Douchetower, Irons, etc, make their Marathon Lua scripts.
I'm just courious when on the steam? Yep I know there's non steam version.
Whoever is doing this needs to do the same with all the old Unreal/Unreal Tournament games since they've been abandoned by Epic.
Liked marathon:durandal 2 myself
Hell yeah, that's the stuff
Andrew Tate? On my ancient homeworld? Outrageous!

Aaaaaaah!!!
I just discovered this game, it's pretty fun. Just one question, is there a way to sort of unlock the vertical degree where I can aim? Like I want to aim way above or way down, but the game won't let me.
This video made me dizzy.
Doom
Nah its a lot different when you play it. Lots of puzzles and mechanics for a game that old.
*Pointing Leonardo DiCaprio* Ayy I see me in those multiplayer games. 😄
I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about the inaccessibility of this classic to the public! I'm glad it's available on Steam now
Honestly my favorite in the series.

That would be cool with multiplayer.

Hey I was wondering, would it be possible to make a Marathon mod that incorporates headshots? I think it'd be cool if you could make a mod where the pistol or smg or something do bonus headshot damage.
Marathon? *Cracks open monster* Now that was a good game
Had the pleassure of playing the trilogy this past year after watching the new trailer. The story had me hooked, the character have a lot of personality, the insane conspiracies and plot were fantastic, and the gameplay although understandably dated had great features a lot of modern shooters dont have. It really exceeded my expectations, I bow down to og Bungie.
The Wizard Soyathon Vs The Virgin Destiny Vs The Chads pre-2011 Halo, Marathon Trilogy, and Myth.
Can’t wait. Classic Marathon is heading to Steam this year.

Hell yeah! That's awesome they had you do that trailer.
NO. FUCKING. WAY. HELL YEAH!!!!!!
I’m a little puzzled at the prospect of Marathon being put on Steam despite already being free abandonware. Does the Steam version have its own perks?
Well, the Aleph One port is maintained and regularly updated, and that's what is being released on Steam. So it will be more accessible to a wider audience. I do know they're working on Steam achievements, but I don't know much beyond that.
That’s a lot simpler than I was thinking. Sounds excellent
@@windbreaker1701i hope they dont paywall the entire port tho considering aleph One has been free for like forever now and is constantly updated via they're own site
on the bright side, it means it's even simpler to get Marathon on the Steam Deck

This is brutal Marathon?!

What are these graphics?! They look so cool but seem interesting to play in

i still caint log on to play. its beena year and no password reset oranything. I would be in this video dying horribly

eventful year!
I'm not a network mapper, but I have to wonder what schools of thought there are on how many SPNKR missiles should be in any given map, and how they should be distributed. Like, when it might be good to have less, if there are occasions to funnel players towards other weapons, etc.
In my experience, the more regular online players generally prefer lots of missiles on their network maps, or none at all. Most people don't really like having one or two rocket launchers on a map, as you'd see more often in the old days, on stock maps for instance. Marathon is such a fast game, and the maps are usually small enough, that having the only rocket launcher on a map is a massive advantage that makes things less fun for those equipped with lesser weapons. People prefer having most or all of the weapons right away, and then utilizing them as they see fit, with enjoyment coming from competing skillsets, as opposed to the frustration of getting killed over and over by the guy who got to the rocket first. That being said, I have made a handful of maps where there's only one rocket launcher :P Usually I counter this by not providing any ammo, so you only get two shots with it before having to fall back on the other available weapons, and it doesn't spawn as frequently. Still, some people have complained about that. I have also made a number of maps with no rockets at all; a change of pace to a rocketless map is often welcome during online rounds.
interesting and insightful
never too late for a marathon meme, added to favorites
Awesome stuff! Gonna have to get round to playing Istoria now over Christmas.
Sweet. Hope you like it!
If you're interested in more behind the scenes Istoria stuff, check out the dev commentary series Wrk, Irons, and I did earlier this year: th-cam.com/play/PLQLCieRQFC7QTLg6Xqap-NLWFwXdrd6IW.html&si=tajfkCi2zg8aHVF_
I think streaming your mapping process would be very interesting, particularly if you could provide a running commentary. Or, if it's easier, record the mapping process and upload it to TH-cam after with a retrospective commentary.
I think it's such a slow process for me, with so much redrawing taking place, that it would become mundane after a while. Maybe not, though. But there's also the concern that the streaming itself would affect the creative process, which I would want to avoid. I think this is a decent compromise, all things considered.
@@windbreaker1701 Understsandable. Still, I am wondering how you would summarize your thought process when you created this map. What was the overall concept and what kind of details did you want to add, and why?
@@sphtpfhorbrains3592 Since this was the "hub" map, I wanted it to be a spectacle of sorts, and to stand out from the other maps. With that in mind, I decided to make a tower map, because I really enjoy creating towers, like the last level of the Yuge campaign. So, I decided I could make a serious version of that level here :P To change things up from the Yuge map, I decided to have one half of the map above ground, and the other half below ground, instead of the entire vertical space being taken up by the tower. This would allow the player to discover the subterranean cavern later on in the game, which would hopefully be a cool experience. Irons came up with a really good sting that we use during this transition underground. I wanted the player to have to work at gaining entry to the tower during the above-ground sequence. With that in mind, I needed to make sure I left enough space around the tower for streets and other buildings the player could enter. As I mapped out these areas, I also needed to be careful that I didn't make them too complicated, since I needed to create the tower and the entire cavern still, and had to be mindful of polygon usage. We also knew the chain burst would be introduced on this level, so I wanted to make sure the street sequence was fun. As I mention in the video, the spawns here took a while to get right. It was hard to make them feel organic, and to have them not activate at the wrong time. It would have been a bit easier to draw more polygons for activation triggers, but I didn't want to draw more than I had to. Once the player reaches the top of the tower and beats the above-ground sequence, they are given their first victory in the story (even if short-lived). This also serves as the halfway point in the campaign. And once the player progresses through the next two maps, and then beats the cavern sequence, I sort of view that as the player entering the last act of the game, as they head in to map 8, Born Under Punches. I'd say the process with this map, and all the other Istoria maps, involves balancing a number of different goals for the level. Overall, you want the combat to be fun. That's the top priority. But you also want the layout to be interesting and a bit challenging, the appearance of the level to stand out, etc... So, it's really just a big balancing act, I feel like. Not sure if any of that makes sense, but that's my answer :P
@@windbreaker1701 Yes, it all makes sense, thanks.
