RLD Painting a Surreal Fantasy Dreamscape "Lava Lamp Odyssey" with Acrylic Paints
“Lava Lamp Odyssey” is a surreal landscape depicting a band of merry and courageous travelers embarking on an epic journey through a whimsical fantasy world. Things in this world are not always what they seem so they must overcome their fears and work together, relying on their individual skills and traits if they hope to traverse this land unscathed. How much of their fate is in their control? What lies around the corner, danger or delight? Thankfully they can rely on the magic powers of their fearless leader General Fred “Jumpy” Froguson the 3rd to help them face the many perils that lie ahead. Of course if things get too crazy they can always try their luck by going through one of the many magic portals available along the way.
The intention of this painting is to bring a smile and is an invitation for the viewer to ignite and get lost their own imagination. I truly hope this work will inspire daydreaming.
I hope you enjoy this time-lapse process video. I spent countless hours bringing this image to life with acrylic paint.
Also thanks to Greg "Craola" Simkins for the inspiration to even attempt to create my own magical worlds.

    I would say that you paint more in an intuitive way with a rollercoaster technique. Your inside is basically directing your moves because you are so free when you are striking the canvas to bring forth your image. I agree you are definitely not a step by step painting.

    I tend to gravitate to abstract art. I can do realistic pieces, but l don't prefer doing them. I think, for me, it is because I am a perfectionist and I can't stop until the piece is "correct." I don't have that with abstract work.

    • @RLDSTUDIO
      @RLDSTUDIO 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think this is a great insight. I think it applied to me as well at the time of this video and I didn’t fully realize it. I’ve started challenging myself to do some realistic and surrealistic subject matter and have been really enjoying it. If you are interested I’ve made a bunch of painting videos on realistic subject matter since. Ones that come to mind are a cowboy trinket, several shark teeth paintings, golden scarabs, pearls and butterflies and there are a lot more. I find the more I paint the less concerned I am with perfection. It’s a great relief and now I’m open to playing and exploring with both styles. Thanks for sharing.

    I think you make beautiful art and maybe you do underestimate yourself by saying that others find it cheap and terrible. That is their judgment and says nothing about your work. NEVER sell your work for less because of someone else's opinion. So STOP telling yourself AND others (in publike) that you don't do it for the money or whatever.

    Hello Randy i have watched some more of your videos and I can not believe how it seems that you are speaking for me. My journey feels so similar it's eerie. I wonder if you have found success in selling your work that is where i am struggling and am some how losing my motivation for painting because I don't have a good outlet to sell my stuff. Really enjoy your narration and describing the process. I live in Florida have always wanted to paint and collaborate with someone who seems to think as i do on occasion do you have any interest thx.

      @RLDSTUDIO 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there. First off thanks for watching and sharing. Really appreciate that. I'm super glad my content is resonating with you. It really means a lot and inspires me to make more videos. I have had some success in the last 3 years or so selling work, but it is in no way enough to do full-time. I was in a gallery for a little over a year, but they had to shut down due to lack of sales during covid. Now I show and sell my work in a very large local eclectic antique market. I've had some success selling stuff via instagram as well. Not selling or not having good outlets to sell can be disheartening, but I honestly never really was concerned about selling from the beginning. I do sell and try to sell stuff now, but my main focus is still on just creating and the process in general. It helps me to just keep getting better and I trust the money will come. DM me on instagram and let me know what you have in mind for collabs. I usually don't do them these days, just because I have so many projects going on... but I'm always interested in connecting with other artists... so let's talk :)

    Love your figures. I've seen that sort of technique before but yours are somehow real. Going to give it a go

      Thanks so much. Really appreciate the comment. Good luck with your painting and don't worry if it takes a while. I still have to practice and push through the ugly paintings to free up and get to the good stuff :)

    Hello....although I prefer realistic and classical paintings but recently I discovered the beauty of such abstract figures of yours and others , and I am fascinated by your techniques. Well, art is so deep to combine two different styles in its majesty.

      Thanks. Since I did this video I've started dabbling in realistic art. If you are interested I'd love it if you checked out some of my later videos painting realistic subjects... I've done some birds, bugs, barns, shark teeth and more. I'll be sharing some videos of more surrealism paintings with realism mixed in... soon :)

      Thanks - I need to remember my own advice sometimes. Painted figures like these for a live audience for the first time last night and it felt like I was lost at times. Appreciate the comment - glad it connected with you :)
