This is a short clip but it's a good exposed video of the engine function. Just so everyone knows you do not have to tear your jeep apart like this for the swap. This one is getting repainted.

66 months later --> if you still have the rig, have you yet considered compound turbos? Not just for power but moreso the much broader power band
@krakhedd i no longer have this particular jeep, but do have another project coming up. It may be something I would consider in the future
Thx for the info! Besides the Turbo & P-pump mods, anything else? (Injectors, etc) 🫡
@protecsafes6642 yes, upgraded bosch injectors and bosch fuel pump. I didn't do it to this particular one, but I have removed the rack limiter one one before. I don't recommend it as you can have catastrophic failure due to over revving .
Thank you Sir 😊
Looking to swap a 617 into my ranger. Can’t find an adapter plate. Any suggestions. The Rangers an 88.
@normahalteman7253 to be honest, I haven't delt with the Rangers much. I do know if it's the m5r1 trans, they aren't very strong and i would recommend swapping something in its place to give better reliability
Great video but I was curious how much horsepower was added when using 30xr super in another video you had compared to factory turbo. I’m about to start on a spare engine for a project
@jacobclarkson5306 i haven't actually put any of these om617 on a dino , so i couldn't give you a hp/torque number. I can tell you it is a major difference in felt power. Especially if you couple it with a built injection pump. That's where it really brings out potential
What transfer case?
It's a chevy 241c transfer case. Come from a 92 chevy 2500 silverado
I have both a 1997 TJ and a 1982 W123…. 🤔
@flavio-p do it! It's a very fun build
Nice job on the Turbo fitting. One question about the In line Pump. Do you happen to know if the Bosch inline pump was different for the Naturally aspirated engine and Turbo Variations? I have a NA OM617 from a UK model W123. I would like to upgrade it to a Turbo version. Will I need to replace or upgrade the Pump in anyway? BTW great video. Well explained. Thanks for sharing.👍🏽👊
@MrVictory13 thanks brother! Yes I believe the fuel pumps are different, the turbo version requires more fuel supply. You will likely have to upgrade
Where do you get your engine mounts
@drmachinewerke1 i usually make my own. I bought several from mercedes 4x4 back in the day but he went out of business. They were bad about breaking to ,so just started making my own
Don't go over 200 horsepower you'll throw a rod out the side of the block.
Heya! What inch studs would you recommend going intercooler route? With the one inch spacer. 2.50 inch studs?
Yes, 1 in spacer with 2.5 in studs will be perfect if your running am intercooler
Que buen swap. Yo traigo en el mio un om603
@@joselu953 Consideraría seriamente el om617 frente al 0m603. El om603 tiene fama de tener la cabeza rota. no son tan confiables.
Hey, Looking to buy a motor ready to go, are you selling these? or can you source them for a fee?
@augustus5151 they are awesome engines.I sell one every once in a while, but I do not normally source them out for people. Shipping is a pain and expensive. The engines are getting more expensive and harder to come by with the popularity sky rocketing as well
This is a great video, thanks! ON EXHAUST STUDS Heating is great, penetrating oil is great also but the real trick is using two nuts to remove the stud. vice grips are fine but i have struggled much more with vice grips than with the two nut method. If it isn't obvious to whoever is reading, you put one nut as far down as you can to avoid twisting the stud which could be brittle, then thread another nut onto the stud over it.... You know have a bolt when operating the lower nut. you can switch between lower and upper for threading a stud in or out... FWIW i have done this job on several on these 617 manifolds.
Thanks brother. Yes definitely good advice. I successfully removed some studs this way with no heat
Hello I have a question I have a om617 I have swapped into a 16-foot boat I'm currently have it running quite well but I'm looking to upgrade to the 7.5 mm fuel pump and I was wondering if this hx30 turbo would be the best option for me. I was having slight issues pulling out a skier and I just need a little bit more push at the bottom end and overall more horsepower. So I need a moderately quick spooling turbo and I am planning on doing a intercooler. This video was quite helpful.
In my opinion, an xh30 is going to give you max power output. But something such as a holset HE221W will spool quickly and give better bottom end at the sacrifice of top end capability.
PS: went shopping for the "HX20" turbo, there were a myriad of them on EBay. What is the make of the one you use? Thanks
HX30!
I usually find genuine holset turbos if I can. They cost a little more but last way longer
@@Steel-Gunner OK, and thanks for you reply I am eager to give it a try.
Good deal! Hey, whats with that gear box and and motor mounts?
I usually use an ax15 transmission, I used to get the motor mounts from koch enterprises, but they are out of business. Doomsday diesel has them
Love that build man👍🏻
Thanks brother
I gotta ask what’s the miles per gallon like now? We know what the miles per smiles are. 😁
It has averaged around 12mpg. I have trouble keeping my foot out of it so I haven't got to estimate full potential on mpg's yet lol
@@Steel-Gunner sounds pretty accurate to me. Keep up the good work, man! I love the channel and I will be following along.
@@redneck305xD thanks brother I appreciate it
What did you do for gauges?
I left the jeep ecu in to run the guages. I still don't have the tach hooked up, but the rest are easy. The factory Speedo runs off of wheel speed sensors. The fuel guage remains the same since it's the stock fuel tank. I run a mechanical oil guage, and the temp guage runs on a 3 wire temp sensor that sends signal to the factory temp guage and the gm ls computer as well. I will get around to the tach eventually
What transmission?
Nv3500 out of a 1992 chevy silverado 2500
@@Steel-GunnerDang all the things I’ve read about the NV3500 is that it’s not meant for performance, but seems like you’re having no issue rowing gears like it’s a T56 👍
@@bishop94z yeah it's doing well so far. We will see what the long-term is lol
That thing is gnarly! Sweet build!
Thanks brother

I LIKED YOUR VIDEO... I HAVE A 1978 240D WITH STICK SHIFT (616) AND WOULD LIKE TO PUT A TUROBO ON IT. DOABLE?
Thanks! Very doable. Several people have and made a good power jump
who's engine is this ( manuf. ) is 617 a displacement ( cc / cid ) ? J A
This is an engine I pulled from a 1983 mercedes 300sd. It's an om617 3.0 inline 5 cylinder turbo diesel
Isn't the adaptar going to add dimensional restriction?
Its actually just a spacer, not an adapter per say. The openings on the spacer are the exact size as the flange on the turbo, so there are no air restrictions
Feel like those spacers would make so much noise
I have put over 4k miles on this swap so far and there is zero noise from the trans or any of the hydraulic throwout bearing components . It actually is a much smoother and easier clutch to operate vs a standard slave cylinder style
Theres info ALL over about the input shaft differences. Trans from 97 up will bolt right onto an ls
Thanks for the info. My experience unfortunately was complete opposite. I did some pretty extensive research and people were either guessing or they were saying it won't hold up. I found very little useful info on bolting an nv3500 to an ls. Also I found very limited to almost no availability of an nv3500 anywhere near me. That being said I had to get what I could take, not try and find a certain year transmission that has zero availability. Pretty much any transmission that was bolted up to a sbc will bolt right up to an ls. This isn't my first rodeo on bolting an older trans to an ls, I have done it several times, but they were autos, and just required a spacer to place the torque converter correctly.
@@Steel-Gunner yeah all I've ever seen is people put a collar/spacer on the input shaft
Also, the nbs trucks had a different 3500 than the pre 99s did. Completely different slaves and cases
@RogueKnight33 Good information to know, I appreciate any extra knowledge I can get
How much does it cost to have the pump rebuilt and where can I get it rebuilt
I used to pay right around 1k from benzforce. They stopped doing them for a while, not sure if they started back up, but I'm sure it's over 2k now with everyone else. MBZ parts offers m pumps , I believe they are a little over 2k
Awesome trans, I had one behind a stock 454TBI in a 92full size 2door yukon that stood soooo many clutch dumps. What killed it was wrong oil and filled to the brim by a competent mechanic😤 and I did not ask for the fluid change😤😤😤 Costed me a cluster gear, the second gear and the usual consumables, good as new with the correct fluids of course. I wish I can get my hands on another one. A pain to take apart, even more so to put back together. Thanks for the vid
Thanks for the kind words and the info. Good to know it should hold up. I have a little over 1,000 miles on the swap now and it's doing awesome. I will be making another video here soon
What transmission would handle that? Currently building a 1984 cj7 looking to put a 6.0 or 5.3 in it. Will primarily be off-road use. But I’m not sure which transmission or t case to use.
So far the nv3500 from a 92 3/4 chevy is holding up great. An nv4500 is a sure shot but, very large, very heavy, and pretty low geared. I think the nv3500 is a good fit as long as your not dumping the clutch or doing crazy stuff
@@Steel-Gunner thanks! I definitely want to build something that will withstand some abuse! Nice build!!
@@justyce1849 thanks!
Hello how would cost to do one good 0m617 for my 300 TDI RHD
It depends on what transmission you use and how much your sourced engine costs. I typically find om617's here in Ohio around $1200-$1500. Doomsday diesel usually costs around that for a transmission adapter kit. A safe assumption would probably be $3k - $4k
hey quick question is it posible to turbo the non turbo variant of the 617 or is it not a smart idea
I have seen a couple people who have done it. The only issues are, it's not an easy nor cheap swap, and it will wear it out very quickly. The turbo model has oil squirters, sodium filled valves, nitrogen hardened crank, and a better injection pump, all which the non turbo lack. You would also have to swap the exhaust and intake manifold to accept a turbo. You then have to make an oil feed line for the turbo, then find a way to make an oil return to the pan. Your much better off getting a factory turbo model, but I always say go for it if it's what you want to do, it is possible.
Wouldnt the jeep tcase mount up? Not using a slip yoke tcase would be far better.
Unfortunately, a 241j transfer case is a different bolt pattern, and input shafts are different lengths. I could have had an adapter made, which would cost me $600, plus having to switch out input shafts. The 241c transfer case come with the transmission and cost me nothing. If I choose to do a slip yoke eliminator kit, and i may in the future, you can purchase a slip yoke eliminator kit for just over $200 for the 241c.
When running the hx30 at what rpm does it spool compared to the hx35 at 3k rpm?
I typically start to pick up descent boost at around 2200- 2400 rpm with an hx30
I stumbled on to your channel looking for a om6** swap What changed your mind about the Benz power plant if you don’t mind me asking So far love the videos keep it up man
Thank you! I'm a big fan of 617 swaps and will continue to do them. However, this particular jeep I chose an ls for traveling with my family. Less diesel exhaust fumes, more top end power for pulling our large boat in the mountains of Tennessee, ect.. I will be swapping a 617 into another 4 door eventually.
Where could a guy find an om617 for a decent price (in the states) Or even a Om606 here in the western states I can only find a few and they are pretty expensive Any help would be appreciated
To be honest you will be hard pressed to find an om606 for any where near a descent price here in the US. I have been looking for one for a future project for 4 years now. I have yet to find one less than $3800. The 617s, if you watch fb marketplace closely, I see them show up multiple times a year for $800-$1200. I actually traded a $500 item for a running driving 300d a few years back. They are becoming harder to find, but keep your eyes peeled
Thanks man I will keep my eyes open and try to find something I am wanting to swap out my jkur motor for a mechanical diesel Thanks again and enjoy the power of the LS 6.0
What did you do to mount your power steering pump and alternator? That’s exactly how I need to put mine, I’d be interested to see your bracketry. Awesome build!
I purchased ict billet relocation brackets. I can go back and grab part numbers for you if you want that exact setup
That's stouttttttt
Thanks brother!
Well Done! Sounds Bad Ass!
Thanks brother
Excellent walk/talk through on this. You mentione you would leave a link about the engine mounts you used, I didn't see it. To be honest if you have the time a break down of the items you used would be great. I'm looking into this and your set up looks very clean and makes sense. I know this is just a quick run through but I'm looking forward to following it more because I'm looking at this for my 2015 !! thanks for putting this out there
Awesome! Thanks for the encouraging words! I tried to find a link but can not find it online. I know I purchased them from bruiser conversions for around $450 in 2021. I'm assuming they still sell them. I do need to do a parts list break down , I may do a full video on that. I would highly recommend it, it's a great upgrade from the 3.8 and 3.6
Odd you didn't do the hemi swap w/ all the support.
I considered it in the beginning, but honestly the ls has alot more advantages over the hemi. One of the biggest factors is that the hemi would have cost me a good bit more money. I know they are notorious for cam and lifter failure, which concerns me also. The ls world has a lot more aftermarket support over the hemi, and in my opinion, I have never heard a hemi that sounded as good as a well tuned ls. I know my setup cost less than the hemi and makes a good bit more power. I would have had to do cutting and welding on my frame as well. I have nothing against a hemi, the ls was just a better choice in my situation.
Just found your channel from the OM617/OM6XX Swaps FB group. I just subscribed and watched a couple of you older vids. Good stuff. Cant wait to follow along on the JKU swap. I have an 07JKU and I'm looking to solve my 3.8 problem as well. I wanted to say thank you for all the little details you discuss on the 617 and the various options. Its very helpful and appreciated.
Awesome! Thanks for the subscribe and encouraging words! I'm glad my videos can be of some help 🙂
i see the egr blockoff on your intake but what do you use to plug that exhaust port?
I just put a small block off plate in the place if the metal pipe and clamp it on. I believe you can buy a kit from doomsday
did you do anything t the connecting rods, or are they stock?
Yes, connecting rods are stock. These engines are very strong on stock internals
th-cam.com/video/N_mvngUFzdo/w-d-xo.html This is my rebuild of OM617
Are you running the OEM OM617 water pump, with the longer neck?
Yes I always use the factory water pumps, I don't recall the necks being really long though. Maybe stick out a few inches
@Steel-Gunner there is a pump from late 60's Mercedes that also fit, which are about 30mm/1.25" shorter. That's what I used on my swap but I had to rebuild the pulley with that shorter offset
@@tanner3801 interesting, that's good to know. I appreciate the information
are you using the Jeep TJ tach? If so how did you do that?? mount magnets somewhere for the Jeep magnetic pick up to pull signal from orr?
I actually used an aftermarket tach from autometer. They bolt to your alternator
👍👍
Anything done to the pump?
Yes, has been Rebuilt with 7.5 diesel meken upgrades
Any hp/torque numbers on an OM617 with that turbo setup, requisite fuel and an inter cooler? does the NA intake manifold flow better?
I have run an intercooler and it is a pretty noticeable power difference. I haven't run mine on a dyno yet, but plan to in the future. I don't think the n/a manifold flows better, however it works much better for hook up if your running an intercooler
