Thanks for popping by! I''m a professional ultra trail runner, mainly running, usually long races in the mountains of the Alps.
This channel will hopefully help share some stories and things I've learnt along the way, mainly in the long 200 mile races.
Would love to hear from you, so please comment or email about anything - training questions, nutrition, logistics, sleep strategies, pacing, recipes for poutine...
Hope to see you out on the trails or at races.

Nope, not even close! DNF of shame.

Hi Galen, love your videos. wonder if you could do a comprehensive comparison TDG vs Swiss Peaks. In terms of technical, atmosphere, difficulty, scenery, transportation to/from the race etc. for someone doing the 1st (and possible the only) 300km+ race. Love to know your views. Any other similar races you recommend? Good luck with your TDG race.
Yes! Great, idea. Will do! Other races I'd recommend are Cervinio Matterhorn Ultra Race. Others that I've had my eye on but haven't done are crossing Switzerland and UTLAC - ultra trail lake como
What a fantastic video and story. I am going to catch up on the episodes I’ve not yet seen but am wrapped to have seen this instalment and to learn of your incredible adventures!
Thanks Paul! Really appreciate it.
Make sure to run with Francois, bet he is the greatest company you can get and a lot to learn from his approach to the mountains and the athletic lifestyle. Good luck Galen, stay safe out there and enjoy the race!!
Thanks so much! I was able to run with him for a bit. But not as much as I wanted! Thanks for the message.
Fantastic video...proud of you, Galen!
Thanks, mom!
Good luck! Watch out John Kelly and Damien don't team up on you.
Good point! And theow evil Martin in there, and it's trouble. Thanks for watching!
Amazing one! And so will the race be!
Can't wait! Going to be good times!
Haha the quotes are great
Thanks! I hired those actors myself!
A great dad wear GTC hoodie 😉. Rock the Tor man
He's very proud of that one! Not sure he's washed it since he earned it in 2022
Have you measured your HEart Rate Variability before Verbier? Was it in your usual range?
I use the HRV from my watch. Not sure how accurate it is. But it was all over in the weeks leading up to the race. Above and below the normal range. But I only started looking at the data leading up to the race after the race. Have you found them accurate?
@@GalenRun Yes I think it is not very accurate however for me HRV tends to be low when I am not rested well enough which is associated with overheating while running, sleep disturbance and a slightly high heart rate when waking up. Overheating happens also to me when I am racing with a poorly symptomatic viral infection. Good luck for the TOR, you ll do great, I ll cheer for you
Great points. I should be paying more attention, but I always seem to brush it under the carpet, blaming things on my kids being sick and up all night. Cheers! Thanks for watching!
Keep up the videos man, you are very good at them!
I appreciate it! Will do.
Go for it😊 have fun 👌 big hug from Sintra Lisboa 😉
Thank you Vasco! I appreciate it. And thanks for watching.
Getting overcooked does not sound pleasant
It's deeply unpleasant and saddening 😔
Fortune favours a great moustache
😄 🤣 😂 oh wait....I just trimmed it off.
Thumbs up
Cheers! Thanks for checking it out
It's gonna work man, it's gonna work!
Fingers crossed or it's back to the drawing board
Nah I think ChatGPT was right
Hahaha well one upon a time it was right! But that was ages ago now
Awesome! Thanks for sharing, Galen! 🙏 Although my TOR days are behind me, I still remember the passion that drove me to one day finish the entire loop, which I finally did on my third attempt. It was a wonderful, but all-consuming, bubble to be in. 😂 Thanks for making this series and sharing your reflections and tips. 😍 Best of luck for your 2024 'grand spectacle' in Aosta! 👏🤩🇨🇦
Amazing! Nice keeping with it to become a Geant! Yes, definitely all consuming for sure. It's takes so much in every aspect to finish the Tor. Thanks so much! and thank you for watching.
I love this! ❤ Thanks for sharing! 🙏 I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you (again) this year. 🤞🍀🤞 Go, go, go Galen! 👏🤩🌟
Thank you for watching! Cheers! Can't wait to get back out there
I'm enjoying the series so far! It would be great if you could do an episode on how someone gets into the race and the structure of race such as support points and drop bags etc. I hope to do the Tor in 2026 and from what I gather from the website the best way to get in would be to do the 100 miler in 2025 to get an entry?
Hey John, great idea! I'm adding it to the list. Will cover this in the offseason. I actually need to go through and re figure it out myself! Off the top of my head it's to do one of their races which gives you a certain amount of PAX 'points'. Will let you know more when I know more!
Great video. Well done on the win 😊👍
Thanks! It was such a ridiculously tough one, but thoroughly enjoyed it!
Another great video! Really enjoying the Tor specific stuff
Thanks for watching! We have that in common then!
Great breakdown, thanks - so much to learn and digest! Can I ask specifically - how do you fit in 20+ hours of training around work, family etc? Early starts?
I ask myself that sometimes as well! Pre kids I was working in an office from 8 - 6+ and would run before and either bike or run again afterwards. Long runs on the weekends. Now I'm WFH, and I'm more project based, so I can shift my hours around throughout the day, and I work most nights. Fortunately, my work can be shifted slightly in a macro quarterly sense as well - almost all work from August goes to late Sept, Oct. Not having any friends also really helps.
This is AWESOME Galen! I'm going to be glued to social media in hopes that I can track your run. You brought up a great point in the video, the race experience to register is not super intuitive. I'd love to hear if you have any feedback on what to do, when to register, and ultimately how to improve my chances of getting into the lottery for 2025. Super geeked for you! Lets GOOOO!!!
Thanks, John! There is live tracking, but I must warn you that it can be very boring! That's a great question. I'm going to dig into it a bit and will get back to you!
@@GalenRun Not a big fan of signing up for races to garner points in hopes of getting into a lotto, LOL! A friend of mine told me to look into SwissPeaks 360 as well. Here's to hoping I get into one of those. Next year I'm doing a 100 in March, the inaugural AZ Monster 300 in April, and Ouray 100 in July. Would be awesome to wrap things up w/ TOR 330.
SwissPeaks is great. Highly recommended! Yeah I hear you on the ironmanification of trail running!
@@GalenRun I just got my Passport renewed. I'm currently scheduled for The Arizona Monster 300 in early April and Ouray in July. I'd love to do TOR 330, but unsure if I can swing it and my body will bounce back in 2-months to run another brutal course. The plan as of now is to get out there in September.
Nice breakdown with the hourly training load as it progresses through through the season!
Yeah, it's also nice to balance work obligations cause I'll know which months are crazier then others.
Awesome content! Really valuable to have a behind the scenes insight to a pro training schedule like this
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching!
How do you choose the right pairs of shoes for a such a big race, you tape your feet from start? Keep up the good work!
That's one of the toughest things to figure out! Yes, I take and put tape, then vaseline on all the spots that break down. But I've never made it thru a 200 miler without a lot of blisters. Shoes! Man, something I try and figure out every year. Previously, I just stayed with one model and alternated the size. But this year, I'm switching brands in hopes it mitigates some of the blister spots.
And I realise I didn't answer your question. A lot of testing in long runs and in shorter races. I look at stack height, weight, forefoot width, heel width, and breathability. I test or measure at home. And I know what numbers work for me. Those shoes make it to the long run/race testing
Hey Galen, I came across your profile after finishing the Ouray 100 this year. Are you still planning on recording a series on how you trained for this event. I'm planning on registering for 25 and hoping I get into the lottery. Would love to see how you trained for this epic run!
Hey John, thanks so much for watching. Wow, the Ouray 100 looks great, I don't know how you deal with that consistent altitude!? I've got a new vid coming right up on how I train for the Tor. Fresh off the press. th-cam.com/video/2-ToRYNsSMg/w-d-xo.html
@GalenRun Heck yes!!! And you absolutely need to do Ouray-it's challenging, but stunningly beautiful. Do you know the average altitutude of TOR330? Looking at the Ouray site, Ouray is 10,239 feet. Silly question, but any insight on bettering my chances of getting into TOR330 come 2025? I believe if I'm not mistaken it's via a lottery. And are you planning on running in 2025? p.s. You're a absolute MONSTER for running TOR330 in 72 hours.
I've always wanted to do Hardrock, but given it's impossible to get in I could look at Ouray. The average evevation of the Tor - not sure. It has a really large range from 300m (~1,000ft) to 3,300m (~11,000ft). I I think the best way to get in is through one of their races where you kind of get PAX points, it's like what UTMB is trying to do. I'm not sure what I'll be up to in '25 yet. All depends on how this year goes. Haha, cheers! I was happy with that time given the heat of the first two days as well!
@@GalenRun I'm fairly new to the trail running scene, so I don't have much to compare Ouray to. However, they do call it the Switzerland of America. Oh by the way, Ouray registration opens up in December, I believe.
Good to know! I'll keep an eye out if I can swing the logistics
Hahaha, I could have avoided the storm if I had been as fast as the cut in this video. 😉 Great recap; and very great run in the first place! 💪
Hahah but if you had done that, it wouldn't have been as good a story! Thanks, mate, and thanks for watching.
So brutal! I'll keep an eye on you as well as the Green Runners crew taking it on this year :)
Yes! A big contingent of Green Runners this year. Can Ajay beat ol' Hallsy? Thanks for watching!
Time to try Glaciers.
That's a good point. it's time to try something harder.
Thank you that’s will help me for this year first try 😅
Good luck! Forza! Looking forward to hearing about your experience!
Yessssssss no problem will do
Looking forward to stay in sight of your heels…
Haha! Yes! That would be great. But watch out for my rambunctious poles!
Your feats and race record at this race are amazin but i have to say this : If i ever congratuate a podium finisher and his response is `nah, it was rubbish` i would thought what a idiot :D Its quite disrespectful to everyone involved actually..So if anyone congratulates you again, you know what to do haha..best of luck
Thanks and thanks for watching. I agree! It was a rubbish attitude and way to look at the race. I was just so focused on only one thing - I couldn't see the forest for the trees. Won't happen again!
Great recap and amazing shots throughout. Bon voyage for this years edition!
That's all credit to the content team from the Tor. Thanks for watching
All the best Galen ❤ enjoy the process👌 Big hug from Sintra Lisboa 😉
Thank you Vasco! I appreciate it! Loving the process.

Wow, congrats on the race!
Grazie mille! Forza!
Classic goldeneye level, at least people weren't shooting at you
I've practiced many times!
Didn't realize how gnarly this one was. I watched Jeff P's video after he did it but it seemed like he didn't quite cover it as well as his other videos. Now I know that's because he was likely dying during the race lol
It was his video that got me ready for the canyoning section! So thankful for that. Now that you mention it, I did love his Tor one better. Thanks for watching!
Awesome man! And "not recommend it as your first 200 miler", that hit hard 😔
Sorry i should have mentioned something before. 😊 Thanks for watching!
That elevation profile at 1:59 is wild
Makes me shake in my boots even looking back on it. Best not to look at it!
Great video, great attitude!
Thank so much for watching! And thank you, I appreciate that!
Are you gonna use Altra Olympus 4or5?
I went with the 5's. This year the 6's are out!
And this is it ❤
Thanks!
It makes parte of the job ❤ Have fun on your TOR goal👌
Where?
In Slovenia, in the mountains to the north of Kamnik and coming off a mountain called Planjava
@@GalenRun Hvala! Sometime I use the camping in Luce as base camp. I climbed Planjava, as other mountains from Logarska Dolina.
That would be a great link up!
