FTR Hare Scramble #5 - Okeechobee - 01/19/2025 - Master C (2nd place)
Well well well, 2nd place again today, but fair and square this time. I took an ok start, but it was kind of confusing at the beginning and we caught the previous class right way so in that big mess I didn’t know who was who so I had no idea what position I was, I kind of raced blind on this one as I couldn’t see the screen either passing at the first lap.
The trail was much more difficult and technical than it looked like, and I crashed about 5 times, my record in a race. Traffic on the first lap was insane and this is where I lost precious time. Second lap was much better and 2min36sec faster than the first one but since I was cooked from all my crashes it felt like it was never going to end, recovering from that many crashes was exhausting and I had nothing left. Andre and I passed each other a few times during crashes but by the end he was faster than me and I could not catch up with him, I finished 7 secondes behind him. Congrats Andre, well deserved! See you guys in Indiantown.

My very first podium in hare scramble in my 3rd season racing, the feeling is great. This was the most difficult and most technical race of the season (in my opinion) and also one of my favorite race, so it feels pretty special. During practice I felt my bike was a little stiff so I went to see Kyle Turnis at Moto4play who setup my suspension real nice, spot on, my sag was actually way off. I t...

So...my first mechanical DNF. The race lasted less than a minute for me. After a very average start (I guess I was still asleep) My throttle gave up, the cam inside broke up so the handle was spinning free with no effect on the cable...oh well. Very frustrating as I really liked the course, I had a great practice lap and this was really a race for me. See you guys at the next one, Cheers.

This is probably the hardest sport event I've ever done so far, 5h24min on the bike. The First test was quite fast and somewhat opened, it was my best test out of the five although I tried not to go too fast, as not knowing the trail usually makes for some bad surprises, the goal was to stay up on the bike. It felt good to race again after a 5 month break, during which I didn't ride at all. Living in south Florida does not make it easy to practice, so with such a long break it was not easy to get back on the saddle, especially to race right away. Way to stay after Andre! Nipping at his heels like a cattle dog. Good job Fab
Yes I tried but he was too fast on the open, caught up with him on the slower technical sections but that was not enough, he was just faster than me I was cooked after the first lap as I crashed about 5 times... I usually have more endurance but those crashes killed my progression. But Kudos to Andre!

@@kevincouturier1871 Je suis a Pembroke Pines, environ 35min au nord de Miami, envois ton email je texpliquerai comment FTR fonctionne etc.
Great video and great race sir! As an old racer, I have a tip for you. After you cleared the pack, and you get spacing and come up on a slower rider in a single track section (unless you need a little resting or a drink); down shift into a lower gear so they can hear you behind them (particularly if a 4-stroke is in front of you). This not only helps them realize you are there, but you are ready to be on the pipe to pass them if they force you into having to go around them. This will increase your gap between you and any chasers you worked so hard to pass. I miss FTR and it is a treat to watch a video like this for me. Thank you for that! Cheers to you!
Thank you Sir for the good advice, it's only my 3rd season racing although I've been riding my whole life. You are right about the passing, this is the big point I need to work on, always been! the FTR single tracks don't help my cause either:) but yes, I need to be more aggressive when I'm catching up a slower rider, other riders behind me manage to do it and then I stay stuck I can't follow and I'm loosing precious time, very frustrating! My goal is to go up in B class then i'll be row #7 instead of row #14, I will get much less traffic. Thanks again for the advice and thanks for watching!
Love how scared everyone is of the baby hills this course has 😂
@@psycoskater13 I start row #14 so everyone you see ahead of me that I’m passing are C riders with limited experience. Also, keep in mind it’s Florida, it’s flat as it can be, nobody here is used to hills.

Great job man. Great pace and get line choices. 💯🏁
Thanks! passing was tricky it was very congested, especially the first half.
You’re lucky my teammate Chris from the Young and the Reat of Us was there to pull you up. We expect a good bottle of French wine to be delivered to the campfire. lol
ahahaha just because some guy decides to stop in the middle of the freaking hill! Well, at least my start was ok:)
Nice run. Half of Indiantown will be a tight course so get your passing done in the first half.
I know, I remember from last year. if it's the same trail it will be hard. got to get a good start.
@@calmfab73 Completely new course, been cutting palmettos for 3 weeks. Question, do you rear steer a lot on sandy courses? I have never raced deep sand before and I'm trying the MX14 but I think it almost has too much traction, stands the bike up and launches straight. BTW GMB class.
@ I had Michelin StarCross in the past and, I didn't like it, the grip was not that great for me. I switched to Dunlop mx34 and it's a world of difference, great traction and super efficient in the sand. if it's wet it's great too. I usually don't rear steer, at least not in purpose:) on sand I try to keep a steady traction and I don't touch the breaks, always on the gas, one gear above usual.
@@calmfab73 Was that the SC5, SC6 or michelin enduro tire? Thanks
@@crashdsnowman1 I'm running a Dunlop mx34 rear, Michelin starcross 5 soft in front, but when this one is dead I'll put also an mx34 in front. they're the best for our type of terrain in my opinion. had the starcross rear for a while and I didn't like it, was spinning sideways, no much grip.
If it hasn't rained a lot okeechobee will be sand wont it? Good luck at Brooksville if you are there.
it's a mix of sand and dirt, when try it's quite dusty but this one was pretty wet for sure. Brooksville was great, got 2nd place.
Was a great race and nice meeting you bud!
Great job buddy. Was a pleasure meeting you as well. 💯🏁
How many in Master C, looked like 40+ when on the line.
we're definitely a bunch, probably around 30+, but more than that the issue is that after about 2 - 3min of racing we're catching up with the previous class which is Super Senior C and then Senior C, creating a big traffic jam depending on the difficulty of the trail.
What rear tire are you using? Try a MX14
for that race I had a mx33 which was ok, I since switched to a Michelin Starcross 5 soft and I don't like it, it's laterally too loose, going sideways a lot. When this one is dead I'm going for the new mx34 apparently it's great.
500s are tough to run on tight tracks but they make great lightweight ADV bikes.
they are indeed very heavy to handle on tight trails like that, I switched back since that video I'm now riding 2018 KTM xc-w 300, last year of carburetor, it's a dream, much lighter much more agile, everything is easier really. It's a different style of riding, more aggressive so it's not for everyone, but I'm a 2 stroke guy definitely.
@@calmfab73 Same here. I ride a 500exc-f on the twisty roads on the east Tn /NC border, it's more fun than my 790Duke. Ride a '15 250SX and 2024 250XC in the woods. I haven't raced in the sand down here yet but the MX14 hooks up better than anything I have tried just playing around Ocala. I normally run MX33s for mud & soft in Tennessee, Mitas EX MH green stripe (gummy) for more technical trails.
@@crashdsnowman1 I haven't found the perfect tire yet for what we do down here but will definitely give a try to that mx14.
Did the lock-on style throttle tube break?. That sucks brother.
I didn't use the original tube that comes with the housing, I used the OEM KTM cam that comes with the lock on grip, it's the same dimension as the original tube and same material (plastic...). well, lesson learned, don't mix and match.

Wow! 😮 5+ hours? Marathon man. Working up to try e 1 1/2 hour here scramble. Would love an endure “down the road”. Tougher at 59 to get back into that type of shape vs 40. Great job in 3rd place!

Is that a 300xc youre riding?
@@j.me.0311 it’s a 2018 xc-w. Very similar, it’s the last year of carburetor, I setup a SmartCarb and couldn’t be happier 👌
@@calmfab73 is a carb set-up better than fuel injected? I'm in Florida so no elevation worries. And is the xc-w the best option for a 300 lbs rider? I know, I'm working on the weight 😳
@@j.me.0311 carb or injection is a matter of preferences, I prefer carb obviously, injected bike are not yet 100% reliable, heard too many bad stories, especially with the TPI models. I installed a smartCarb on mine, no jet no needle, care free, you set it up once and don't look back. choice of xc-w is also personal preferences based on your riding style. For hare scrambles here in FL lots of riders have 4 stroke, usually a 350cc, considered the best weapon of choice for this kind of races. I personally prefer the 2 stroke for its lightweight, agility and fast response, especially in tight trails. for a 300lbs rider I would definitely go toward a 350cc or 450cc four stroke.

No more 4-stroke Husky? How do you like your new 2 smoker?
No more Husky, it’s for sale, although I love the bike it was too much for hare scramble, was fighting with the bike all the time, very tiring. The ktm 300 is a mountain bike in comparison, so much lighter and manœuvrable, much easier in general to handle, and I don’t get tired as much as I did with the Husky. I’m still learning the ktm but I think I’m definitely going to gain places!
Good to hear! I run a 300 XC too - I am relatively new to the dirt bike scene and have no experience with a 4 stroke but the bike seems to be ideal for the hare scrambles. I have lined up with you for a few races but currently on injured reserve after the 2nd Bartow mud race which did a number on my shoulder. Hopefully I get a chance to line up (#158C) before the end of the season. Best of luck! @@calmfab73
@@haaseinfla thank you! You have the best bike you could ask for, for what we do, 4 strokers are ok too but it's a bit heavier and not as easy to ride, pros / AA / A riders usually have 4 stroke bikes for hs but they're in a totally different league, they send it like crazy, it pulls longer and harder in sections that are not too tight so they go faster, in the other hand when it's tight single tracks we have an advantage with 2 stroke bikes, much easier. I figured something happened to you again, I was expecting you earlier than that:) I tried to keep up with you for a bit but couldn’t for long, and then still have a hard time passing slower riders so you were out of my reach. My big 500 definitely doesn’t help.
@@calmfab73 yes I see where you were bird dogging me and actually passed me when a rider fell and I almost ran him over. Lol. What camera are you using? Be lucky to get 60 minutes out of mine. Good job! I should've been racing but had to take care of the bike due to the mud fest at armadillo 😂 Brooksville 👃
I’m using a GoPro 11, extra wide angle / max stabilization / 4K recording, on a chest mount, sitting right under my helmet. You’re right about the battery it doesn’t last long enough to shoot the whole race, so I’m using a small battery pack (the ones you use for cellphones) taped under the mount and feed the GoPro battery via a charging cable through an aftermarket battery door that has a hole on it to allow the cable to connect to the GoPro. It sounds complicated but it’s very simple, that way I can record up to 4 hours in full definition. Too bad you couldn’t make it at Punta Gorda, see you in Brooksville 👍
@@calmfab73 never thought about using a external battery pack! Good info. Thnaks
I was at the race yesterday watching. The GoPro does good at making the track look smooth but I know better. Nice job.👍🏻
Also are you in the “master c class”?
Thank you, yes the trail was beat yesterday, it was mostly the same as last season race and I think they probably didn’t do much rehabilitation of the trail. I had a hard time especially on the tight sections, and my big bore 500cc doesn’t help either. I torn my calf muscle right into the second lap and I had to finish seating down, that was quite a ride.
@@pressure-wash-spring-hill-flyes, I just turned 50 last summer, riding Master C.
Way to hang in there and finish! Tough sport for our age. I was dead last BTW! My bike wouldn’t start on the line. I passed you at 1;40.
That 500 is a big bike to handle for hare scrambles. Smaller bike would help you tremendously.
Nice riding!! Loved watching myself getting beat up on my wife's lil KLX230R, you cought me on 3rd lap and after your fall, great riding man💪🏾😎 1:11:42. 1:46:43
Thanks! yea I took a nice fall, I was tired more than anything, didn't really hurt myself but it took me a while to go again. See you at the next one, I'll look for that KLX:)
Great start once again!
Thanks Rob, yes I start well but then I get passed right away and can’t keep up with the first 10th or so, they are just too fast!
Nice ride. Fellow Master C Rider. Are you using a chest mount?
HI! yes, a chest mount, I found it is the best point of view in my opinion. see you at the next one, cheers,
You made me ride faster. We swapped back and forth a few times during the race.
77YB is fast. She passed me yesterday between mile 4 and 5. Trying to keep up with her, I kissed a tree hard!
What row? I was on 38. Cramping up on the last two test. Fun race!
I was 40 something, toward the end, I cramped a lot too and didn’t do the last two tests actually, I couldn’t stand on the bike anymore.
Great job helping that girl! Great sportsmanship!
you know you can ride like this for free
