Hey there, I'm Brian and I make beautiful art.
I'm a mechanical engineer turned artist and I'm generally using my laser cutter but I also employ a lot of 3D printing and leatherworking. You will find videos on everything from wall art, to jewelry, and probably some dad jokes too.
The design files for most of my projects are available on my website and if you just want to buy the art I make then I can help you with that as well. Send me a message if you would like anything custom made for you.
Also, I LOVE feedback so if you have ideas of things for me to make or how I can make better, then please comment and share with me!
Go make cool stuff!

Making 3D Art with 2D Plywood
If you have a CNC router or laser cutter - this video is for you. I show you how I cut up 14 sheets of birch plywood from Craft Closet and created the largest piece of artwork that I’ve made in my life! I used SolidWorks to create the three dimensional design and then exported cross sections as DXF files to Inkscape. From there my Glowforge cut out the shapes for me and I put them together like LEGO! Hopefully this might inspire you to make some art like this just like I was inspired from Bobby Duke Arts to make this!

Custom Laser Cut Laptop Stand and Shelves for my Desk
Very good, congrats...I've been tthinking about a project using layered wood, maybe it could be for your interest because is a little diferent from the classics squared flat works. Thinking about the support body of a lamp, lamp for living room for example....If many layers of wood give shape to the base body of the lamp, a very special shape could be obtained if the different layers of wood are cut in a way that allows to see some interesting pattern that would be seen laterally and illuminated by the light of the same lamp, of course this base body would have to be fitted with a screen ad hoc to the design of the body or vice versa....it´s only a suggestion.
"artpiece set up to comemorate hexagone " XD
Fabulous result!
amazing, thank you
Suggestion for thickness of each layer...?
In my country, its called "pianika" and we don't use it as a necktie, they commonly come in blue.
This is amaaaazing
What wood are you using and the thickness ?
man that was great thanks
niccceee
Do you provide services to convert images into layered wood art vectors?
Hello. Please I would like to know what kind of material you use. I think plywood or laminate is too heavy to hang on a wall. Thank you.
Hi Brian, I am currently looking to do a project that is pretty similar to your example here. I had a few technical questions that I hope you could help me with: 1. how did you go about slicing the object (simply pattern and delete parts? or is there a solidworks plugin for that?) 2. how did you export your parts to dxf (manually 1 by 1 or is there a way to export them all in one go?) I'd appreciate any feedback, I've been stuck trying to figure this out for weeks now. Cheers, V
hilarious and actually amazing design - i love it. Question: is the PLA(?) you used foodsafe? lol just checkin ;D
Thanks Ben! Technically PLA on its own is food safe, but it has also been in contact with all of the printer mechanisms and where ever it was stored so it is still dirty in that sense... The PLA I used does have some fleck additives which might affect the food safe nature of it all - oh well haha
haha! good to kno! glad to hear from you, and glad we can geek out on this stuff these many years later -hope you're doing well!@@engineeredrelics
Purchased this from your link but I was emailed the wrong file! You do not respond to emails! Please send me the correct file.
Hi there, I am so sorry for the mix up and the delay! I've sent you the correct file via email and issued a refund for your order. Thank you for your interest in my work, this won't happen again.
NAHH.. estan bien separadas entre cada una, muy delgadas las partes y 5 soportes??? el chiste es que no se veann., eso parece repiz¡'sa fea
This is great work, i'm really impressed. What I would like to know is how you mounted it on the wall? Can you share that?
It's mounted with a sort of french cleat design. The back of the slats have an angled cut in them which can hook onto some angled wood that I screwed into the wall. It works to hang, but because the art is so hollow, you can see the mounting strip in the back - I'd love to fix that and find another way to hide that mount.
This is amazing, thank you so much for sharing, if you don’t mind, could you please tell me where did you get this bgm?
Dear Brian; I love your design! I would like to make 2 of these side to side for a large blank wall I have. I personally love the spaces between each plank, because I want to incorporate pictures in it. Even though I have made and worked with layered laser cut art pieces in my glowforge I have never worked with 3d parametric software or files. Is it possible to purchase the file from you? You have inspired me to work on it and I hope we can work something out. Thank you so much.
I'm glad you like the design! I don't have the files packaged up nicely with instructions and such, but I have all of the SVG cut files for my glowforge which I could pretty easily provide. My email is in the about section of my channel, if you are still interested send me an email there and we can figure out a handoff.

Oh thank you so much! I want to get back to making more content, I do miss it... Wicked Stingray by the way :)
@@engineeredrelics Thank you very much! I hope you’ve been doing well, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you! Do you still hang out with any of the Velo guys anymore? Cheers man!
How did you prepare the other layers?
That's a good question.🤔
It's something I hope to one day find an easier solution for, but it was done manually using inspiration from that first layer to try and create visually appealing depth and layers. Using Inkscape you can put each one on their own layer so that you can show/hide each one to add/carve away at each layer to build out a nice effect.
Which software
Design is easy...but how did you exported all cross sections to DXF file and have it all nicely organized on sheets with numbers?....when I export to dxf file it exports all pieces together...in the view I have in the screen....I tried to use Slicer Fusion360..it nicely organizes all together but it doesn't allow me to eliminate section I want to eliminate....I want to do it all in SOLIDWORKS but can't find the option for exporting all cross sections into nicely organized dxf file
I want to find a solution for that as well, an automated one would be incredible. But for this I brute forced it by exporting them one at a time... It took a good amount of time to organize and number them like that. Let me know if you find a SolidWorks solution!
That’s amazing!!
Thank you so much!!
Nice job. But I think the spacing is too wide. It would be a little bit nicer, when the spacing between the pieces is the same as the thicknes of the plywood. And another thing I do not like are the black edges. it would be better to sand the edges to show the wood. But it is only my personal opinion! 👍🏻
I very much agree on your spacing comment, the waves just aren’t as visible on mine until you get to shallow viewing angles. Thank you for your feedback :) There is always room for version 2!
Keep making videos bro
Awesome work and well done .. can u share the file with us ?
Thank you for sharing this! Awesome work!
My pleasure!
Bro you’re so underrated ❤
I appreciate that!
I have 7 subs😂
I’m no expert yet, but enjoy every milestone along the way - no matter how big or small!
how do you lay every piece side by side to decrease the area of wood required as much as possible? when I do a solidworks design, I struggle laying every piece manually in the drawing before saving as dxf file. and it takes too much time. Is there any add-in to solidworks or even another software that can do that automatically (automatic arrange) ?
That is a great question and I don’t have an amazing answer because I also brute force the part packing myself. If I’m laser cutting I usually do the packing in Inkscape because I just find it easier to copy and move things to prepare for exporting, but it could be done in SolidWorks too. Now that you ask though, I wonder if there is an extension that can be downloaded for Inkscape which could do the packing, there is a lot more user made programs for it.
I'm just saying YOUR HELLA UNDERRATED.
This comment is really inspiring, thank you for this!
Congrats make the 2k play button
Will do! I’ll make one for every milestone!
Great
Those came out amazing
Thank you! I appreciate it :)
so awesome!!
I appreciate that :)
Awesome so cool nice super
Thank you!
Congratulations
Thanks!
can i ask what is your favourite software (easy to use an create) new designs, maybe even a little tutorial if its possible, stuff you make is awesome. but rather make and sell something of my own than rip designs from someone else, as you propably understand. keep up the great work. best regards from eindhoven ( the netherlands)
Thank you so much for the kind words!! And I do understand, for me, more than half of the fun is the design process and the rest comes from building and having the art afterwards. For 3D designs I use SolidWorks and for 2D designs I use Inkscape, and for many projects I’ll use both to add etching details in Inkscape onto parts I designed in SolidWorks. Inkscape is easy to learn, it’s free, and there are a lot of tutorials both built in and online - highly recommended. SolidWorks is something I use in my day job as a mechanical engineer and it’s become an extension of my own arm essentially haha, but it does cost money. Fusion360 is a very powerful and free alternative that could have made all of the designs you see in my channel. Best of luck on your journey of creating art! Stay in touch and let me know what you make :)
Heya. Which software did you used to create that 3D modelling?
I use SolidWorks to do my 3D modeling, I use it in my work as a mechanical engineer and I love pushing it to make art! It does have upfront costs to acquire though, so in terms of functionality Fusion360 could design everything I’ve made on my channel, and it’s free! But there are other options out there as well.
Awesome. Just don't wet plywood it will warp everytime lol here's a quick tip though instead of engraving, fully cut out the sections and glue the pieces in with a backer attached to the clock.
That is a good idea! Not working with the thin, small pieces of veneer would be much nicer too. I appreciate that!
621 reach now.. prepare to 1000 :))
I sure hope I can get there! Im really excited to make a 1000 sub play button :)
Can't wait to make this. I have lots of small quilts. It will make a great gift.
Oh wonderful! Thank you
Dang that is gorgeous
Thanks Ben!
TH-cam won't go away, it's even getting stronger in our new times, cause it's the only place that truly people can teach others, can truly becomes the world's university. It's a shame that Instagram and TikTok has created this bad idea of "vertical" video, can understand it's cool, but that it ...to show to teach using such a powerful medium has to be "landscape" 16:9 the way we see the world. So as content creator, yes look for ways to expose you self if you want to entertain which we have a lot of that, but don't get discouraged by numbers ...keep the quality (show-teach) ...anyhow, sorry for this nonsense ...oh! ...since you're an Engineer try to incorporate Arduino projects!!! 😉...just keep the good work!! 👏🏼
This is such a wonderful and needed comment for me, thank you! I had never considered that we see the world in landscape, that’s so true. Your words aren’t nonsense, I feel a lot of wisdom in them. And with respect to Arduino projects, I have a mini fear of them that I need to conquer. As a mechanical engineer I’ve developed a passion for pure mechanical solutions to things. But frequently you need more tech to pull things off and this might be just the push to get me in that direction. I appreciate you
Nice! Love the aesthetics of the walnut and hemp
Thanks! My sister loved the gift :) totally fits with the look of her house
These are beautiful! Can I ask a couple of questions... what diameter clock part did you get and did you cut the center hole the same size? Also how did you hang it on the wall with the clock mechanism sticking out further at the back? I''m a beginner but am in the process of designing a sports clock for my son at christmas and if you're willing to offer any advice I would be so grateful! These are absolutely stunning!
Oh thank you so much Jodi, your kind words mean a lot to me! For the clock mechanism that I purchased, which there is a link to in the description of the video, they had a 1/4" stem that you insert through the wood. My laser cut files used that exact dimension for the central hole (6.35mm) and it was a tight fit - the threads dug in just a tiny bit. If I were to do it again I would probably add an extra .15mm diameter to that cut, so a 6.5mm hole. And for hanging it on the wall, the clock mechanism came with a sheet metal bracket that hangs on a simple nail in the wall, unfortunately it does mean that the clock face itself is pushed away from the wall by about 16mm. This does make the clock kind of want to tip forward just a little bit, but I kind of like seeing the shadow cast on the wall by the clock, rather than the look of it just being flat on the wall with no dimension to it. You could add standoffs or a ring on the backside of your clock to get the illusion of the clock being thicker than it is, but it really just helps to sit the clock flatter on the wall. And for your sports clock, you so got this! I was actually just making a Seattle Seahawks wine bottle balancer last night for a Christmas gift. I found a high resolution logo, imported it into Inkscape, and used the "Trace Bitmap" function to create a path of the logo details. You'll need to play with the sliders there to pull out what you want but it can be a lot faster that manually tracing out a logo on your own with splines. Another tip would be to pick clock hands that have better contrast with the background. Mine were wood on wood and they kind of fade away when you look at it. In the end, the clock for my sister is used more as a piece of art rather than as a clock because of that. Which is still a success in my book :) Let me know how your clock turns out!
@@engineeredrelics Great explanation. Thanks for detailed sharing !!
This is super cool! You are underrated.
Thank you so much, I appreciate you!!
The spice must flow!
The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness.
I'm looking to make myself something similar in the near future. I'll probably veer from the design a little as I'll only need one color but still, very insightful video!
Let me know how it goes! I’d be curious to see how others make theirs. It’s been so helpful for my filming
