Thanks Ben! Technically PLA on its own is food safe, but it has also been in contact with all of the printer mechanisms and where ever it was stored so it is still dirty in that sense... The PLA I used does have some fleck additives which might affect the food safe nature of it all - oh well haha

It's mounted with a sort of french cleat design. The back of the slats have an angled cut in them which can hook onto some angled wood that I screwed into the wall. It works to hang, but because the art is so hollow, you can see the mounting strip in the back - I'd love to fix that and find another way to hide that mount.

I'm glad you like the design! I don't have the files packaged up nicely with instructions and such, but I have all of the SVG cut files for my glowforge which I could pretty easily provide. It's something I hope to one day find an easier solution for, but it was done manually using inspiration from that first layer to try and create visually appealing depth and layers. Using Inkscape you can put each one on their own layer so that you can show/hide each one to add/carve away at each layer to build out a nice effect.

Which software

I want to find a solution for that as well, an automated one would be incredible. But for this I brute forced it by exporting them one at a time... It took a good amount of time to organize and number them like that. Let me know if you find a SolidWorks solution!

That is a great question and I don’t have an amazing answer because I also brute force the part packing myself. If I’m laser cutting I usually do the packing in Inkscape because I just find it easier to copy and move things to prepare for exporting, but it could be done in SolidWorks too. Now that you ask though, I wonder if there is an extension that can be downloaded for Inkscape which could do the packing, there is a lot more user made programs for it.

Thank you so much for the kind words!! And I do understand, for me, more than half of the fun is the design process and the rest comes from building and having the art afterwards. For 3D designs I use SolidWorks and for 2D designs I use Inkscape, and for many projects I’ll use both to add etching details in Inkscape onto parts I designed in SolidWorks. Inkscape is easy to learn, it’s free, and there are a lot of tutorials both built in and online - highly recommended. SolidWorks is something I use in my day job as a mechanical engineer and it’s become an extension of my own arm essentially haha, but it does cost money. Fusion360 is a very powerful and free alternative that could have made all of the designs you see in my channel. Best of luck on your journey of creating art! I use SolidWorks to do my 3D modeling, I use it in my work as a mechanical engineer and I love pushing it to make art! It does have upfront costs to acquire though, so in terms of functionality Fusion360 could design everything I’ve made on my channel, and it’s free! But there are other options out there as well.

That is a good idea! Not working with the thin, small pieces of veneer would be much nicer too. I appreciate that!

This is such a wonderful and needed comment for me, thank you! I had never considered that we see the world in landscape, that’s so true. Your words aren’t nonsense, I feel a lot of wisdom in them. And with respect to Arduino projects, I have a mini fear of them that I need to conquer. As a mechanical engineer I’ve developed a passion for pure mechanical solutions to things. But frequently you need more tech to pull things off and this might be just the push to get me in that direction. I appreciate you

Oh thank you so much Jodi, your kind words mean a lot to me! For the clock mechanism that I purchased, which there is a link to in the description of the video, they had a 1/4" stem that you insert through the wood. My laser cut files used that exact dimension for the central hole (6.35mm) and it was a tight fit - the threads dug in just a tiny bit. If I were to do it again I would probably add an extra .15mm diameter to that cut, so a 6.5mm hole. And for hanging it on the wall, the clock mechanism came with a sheet metal bracket that hangs on a simple nail in the wall, unfortunately it does mean that the clock face itself is pushed away from the wall by about 16mm. This does make the clock kind of want to tip forward just a little bit, but I kind of like seeing the shadow cast on the wall by the clock, rather than the look of it just being flat on the wall with no dimension to it. You could add standoffs or a ring on the backside of your clock to get the illusion of the clock being thicker than it is, but it really just helps to sit the clock flatter on the wall. And for your sports clock, you so got this! I was actually just making a Seattle Seahawks wine bottle balancer last night for a Christmas gift. I found a high resolution logo, imported it into Inkscape, and used the "Trace Bitmap" function to create a path of the logo details. You'll need to play with the sliders there to pull out what you want but it can be a lot faster that manually tracing out a logo on your own with splines. Another tip would be to pick clock hands that have better contrast with the background. Mine were wood on wood and they kind of fade away when you look at it. In the end, the clock for my sister is used more as a piece of art rather than as a clock because of that. Which is still a success in my book :) Let me know how your clock turns out!
