Writing Warmup Rituals // get ready to write with me
Writing is a craft, like any other art form. And regularity and consistency and routine are a huge element in making sure that I write my best and stay on top of my game as an author. In that spirit, I wanted to outline my warmup routine for a day of writing.

Outline & Organize Plot Points in Scrivener // how i go in depth with plotwork
มุมมอง 4.9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Based on the questions and responses to some of my previous videos, I wanted to go over more in detail how I translate my plotwork into Scrivener itself and work within there. Mainly, I wanted to cover how I more specifically use Scrivener and templates to work on my plot. I create the general outline, fill in my plotwork to the corresponding plot points, and then work and arrange my plot weavi...
Enneagram for Character Conflict // how choices are made: using Lord of the Rings
มุมมอง 8482 ปีที่แล้ว
Using the Enneagram to round out a character is a wonderful way to add depth and meaning to their actions and choices. As a writer, I'm always thinking about ways to help my characters feel more authentic, and to have their journey feel true to actual human behavior. In this video I discuss my process for using Enneagram, the basic descriptions of the 9 types, and apply it to one of the best fi...
Getting Through Revisions // my edit process from start to finish
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Come along with me as I detail my editing process from start to finish. How I go from Scrivener to Kindle to Microsoft Word through my entire step-by-step approach as I revise, refine, and polish my manuscript. When I'm done with this process, the book is fully ready for formatting and publication. I’m always curious about it how authors - especially indie authors - go about their editing proce...
Scrivener for iPad // writing without limits
มุมมอง 31K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I absolutely love Scrivener for a variety of reasons - It has fabulous tools for things like plotwork, character design, and overall structure for writing. For my organization-loving mind, it’s amazing! But the absolute best thing Scrivener offers is an app for on-the-go access. This means I can keep going on my writing no matter where I am. In this vid I go over how I use both my MacBook and m...
Let’s Explore Denver // travel with us to Colorado
มุมมอง 1122 ปีที่แล้ว
We recently took a trip to visit family in Denver, Colorado. Tag along with me as we explore the city, checking out the best spots to grab the best coffee, delicious cocktails, great breweries, and fantastic restaurants that this city has to offer. Denver is such a cool city and has a very low-key vibe… we’ll definitely be back! I could use a little more snow in my life right about now. And I’m...
Let's Visit Charleston // eat, drink, & explore the holy city
มุมมอง 1403 ปีที่แล้ว
I took a quick trip to Charleston, South Carolina - the Holy City - and spent a few days exploring. This was the first time I've travelled in a while - the pandemic has really thrown a wrench in my usual activities the past year - so it was wonderful to get out and enjoy a new place. Charleston surprised me with its beauty and the delicious food and drink options. Come along with me on this lit...
Book Cover Design // my indie process
มุมมอง 4663 ปีที่แล้ว
I get so many questions about how I designed my cover and how the process went, that I thought I'd sit down and go over exactly what process I use to move through this fun part of indie publishing. Designing my covers is probably my absolute favorite part of the process - it's really like wrapping this gorgeous present I've created in paper and ribbons that are as beautiful as what's inside. An...
Writer's Block // how i deal
มุมมอง 2293 ปีที่แล้ว
Today I want to sit down and talk a little bit about one of the biggest soul crushers that all authors have to face at some point in your life: #WritersBlock This is a topic that is often discussed and acknowledged in the writing community, but as much as we talk about it, nobody wants to admit when they have it. I go over my fave ways to work through this b*shy part of the #writinglife IN THIS...
How I Plot in Scrivener // from sticky notes to digital
มุมมอง 7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I got a lot of questions on my plot work videos about how I practically go about the process of plot weaving. Since I'm starting on book 3 in my Echo series, I thought I'd take you along for the ride with me as I start out working on plot from the ground up. So sit down with me as I go from white board to cork board & sticky notes, to #Scrivener itself and take a look at how I work on plot from...
Finding the Appalachian Spirit - Writing About the Mountains
มุมมอง 1383 ปีที่แล้ว
My husband and I recently took a quick trip back to the Appalachian mountains in Western North Carolina, where I was raised. My ancestors have had a homestead property here since the Revolutionary War, and my mom and I are working on a book about Appalachian culture which was really the point of this trip. We wanted to find some inspiration and dig through my Great Grandmother's documentation o...
Deconstructing Gorgeous Book Covers // Crescent City🌙 by Sarah J. Maas
มุมมอง 6143 ปีที่แล้ว
I am so excited to hop into this new series where I take gorgeous book covers and give them a quick analyzation from a design standpoint. Then we have some fun where we break down the cover and try and make it look bad while keeping the same elements in the original design! House of Earth and Blood - Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas is the first book on our list! This cover is absolutely BREATHTA...
Complex Plotting for Story (using The Mummy) - The 7 Point Plot Structure // part two
มุมมอง 2.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is part two of a two part series on the 7 Point Plot Structure (also known as the 7 Point Story Structure). We take the basic format and apply it to a full story across multiple plot threads - and in this video we'll be using The Mummy (yup, that glorious cinematic genius from 1999) as our primary example. If you haven't seen part one, make sure you go and watch that one first! You'll need...
How I Plot Story - The 7 Point Plot Structure // part one
มุมมอง 4.9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Okay so today we're going to be breaking down my primary method for plotting out story - the 7 Point Plot Structure (also known as the 7 Point Story Structure). I'll be using a few movie examples, including Avatar, Wonder Woman, and Jane Eyre to help break down the concepts and show examples of great storytelling. We'll go over what makes these stories work and learn how to craft great story in...
How I Use & Set Up Scrivener // Using ACOMAF as an example ✨
มุมมอง 12K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Join me as I break down my absolute favorite writing tool - Scrivener! I show you how to open a new file and the basics of setting up a fiction novel in this software. I love this program not only for the way it allows you to organize your work, keep it cohesive, and look beautiful, but also the cross-platform functionality. Bonus - I use A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas as an example ...

Write With Me on a Rainy Day ☔️ 🌙 // Real Time 2 Hours // (no music)
Hi Jessica- I am loving you're videos about how you think about and use Scrivener. I DO HAVE A QUESTION - I'd really love to know how you use keywords. I see how you use labels, and I get that they are for the big threads of the story. But what about keywords? Do you have a strategy for how you approach using them? I don't know if you're still doing these videos or if you'll see this, but that's my question. Thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH. This is exactly what I've been searching for. Great video. I love the separate plot folder and how you leave them intact and copy over parts into the plot weaving. I can't wait to try this.
That was very well presented and enlightening, but don't call me baby.😀
i keep coming back to this it's been real helpful thank you and God bless you :)
Спасибо за очень полезное видео!
right on thank you God bless you :)
thanks this was helpful God bless you :)
Change title of video. Misleading as the video was only about saving syncing and switching between platforms. Mentioned connecting scrivener to Dropbox but did not show how to connect the two apps. Disappointing.
Loved the examples here! Great video/editing on this
Dropbox is intrusive. Probably not better, but what about Google Docs?
In order to use Scrivener on both an IPad and a laptop do you have to purchase both versions separately thanks
I have an iPad and a PC and I’m using them both in interchangeably and a lot of the writing that I do which is basic writing. Do you know anything about scrivener articulating between the iPad and PC I have dropbox so if I use the iPad and save to Dropbox with my iPad, can I pull it up on my PC through dropbox
Glad I stumbled on this video today💕 I’ve always wondered how people used Scrivener to plot. I’ve only ever stuck with my main scene cards in my manuscript for plot notes and ideas for scenes. Thank you for showing me a completely different way to organize my ideas digitally!
Is the $25 iPad version worth the money? Thanks!
You just made my life so much easier! Thank you for using movie as references. I realized I'm a visual learner 😅
I need help! I don’t understand what I did wrong. I only have Scrivener for my iPhone. I do not own the computer version. I wanted to make sure that my project would be saved as a back up in case my phone or app ever crashed. So here’s what I did. I clicked on sync with dropbox and I logged into my Dropbox account. It gave me an error, and then it brought me back to Scrivener and all of my projects were gone? I wrote 3000+ words and they were just… Deleted. There’s no way for me to recover them. Since this happened, I’ve started copying and pasting my projects into my Google documents. But this is very time-consuming. I would like to know if I were to try again will it all work? I don’t know why it did that. And now I’m scared to try and make a back up.
Do you know how to get page view on Ipad?? I need some stuff to start on a new page, but it doesn’t show where a new page is🙈
I've felt in love with your content, Jessica. Your labour over here is really innovative, informative and different. Thanks for all of your effort!
The absolute best layout with multiple examples.
You explain things so beautifully! Love your plot structure format - just finished my messy first draft and plan to start plotting it out again to begin "weaving it all together". Wish you would make more videos! Thank you for this!
Thank you so, so much! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I'm working on a Substack essay about prepping my creative projects, and I am going to link this video!
Your videos are so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make such information-packed videos!
Brilliant! This is the first tutorial of Scrivener that is as clear and orderly as I have ever seen. Thank you very much and I wish you lots of success in your career! Greetings from Switzerland.
This is super useful and explained very straight forward. Thank you for that!
Thanks so much! Your video is great 🎉🙌
Do you know how this could work if a story has two romance arcs, with two separate couples?
I know this is old and I’m just finding this video but you need to have two separate books because that’s a lot of gymnastics that you’re doing for your story. You wanna give each romance art his own thing so maybe they should be in their own books. I ran to the same problem, and I discovered that the two romances deserve their own books so the first book is gonna be about one sister’s romance and the other one about another sister’s romance then I’m gonna bring all the characters together in a third book which book in the trilogy.
Hi Jessica, thank u for your patience tutorial. Do you think is it possible saved and sync the same file on Dropbox but overwriting it and not with different files each time ?
Hi is it possibile overwriting the same file ? When I saved from my MacBook Pro I saw that there’s always a new one and the space on Dropbox is small . Could you help me ?
Thank you for this video! I’m curious what your recommendation would be: I can only afford Scrivener on one platform, either my desktop PC or my iPad. Which would you suggest I buy Scrivener on?
Well that really depends on how you enjoy working... I love having the multi-panel options in order to see the overview of all my notes and plot work while I'm drafting, so personally I'd choose the desktop/PC version. The iPad has less functionality that way, but obviously is lovely to have on the go. Hope that helps! 💕
This video deserves wayyy more views! So many things just clicked for me and it just broke down the way I wanted to plot and outline in a far more coherent way. THANK YOU. I love the way you call it "weaving" as that is exactly what I wanted to achieve. So appreciative to find this.
🥹 Thank you so much for officially the sweetest comment - I'm so glad you found it helpful with your craft... brb just gonna go cry happily in a corner... 💕
😄💕@@JessicaLynnMedina
I tried pantsing a story and it's not working well for me so I'm trying to figure out how to plot now.
Love your channel! It's really helped me organize my writing process so far. Thanks so much!
I'm so happy you've found my vids helpful! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a lovely comment!
Very very helpful videos. Love your concise way of describing what you do and how you do it. Thank you for sharing!
this is so incredibly helpful thank you for sharing!!
I've been a bit stuck writing my book, and your video was not only inspiring and informational, but funny. I hope you start making videos again soon, you're wonderful! Thanks 💕💕
What a warm and lovely comment! I'm so happy you like my vids - thanks for commenting 💕
“Do my characters talk to me?” Made me realize I’m an observer and narrator in my characters lives. Which just helped me with a dilemma. I was considering rewriting in 1st person, instead of 3rd that I’ve been working in. Now I think I’m on the right track with 3rd, since I’m the observer/narrator. 🤩👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 So thank you! 😁
Thank you for the great advice. I’ve been using Scrivener exclusively on my Ipad because that’s what I prefer to use, but I’m having difficulty navigating Scrivener on it. I’m going to try using it on my Mac laptop and will hopefully enjoy the interface there more.
This is a very well produced video. All the elements and the communication of such is top-flight. Simply....Thank you.
Any thoughts on this. Having advanced degrees in psychological research methods enables the production of fictional material?
This is awesome and thanks so much for your template. I wonder if you'd consider doing a Part 2 of this where you explain how you chose your Weaving folders and the content of each of these folders? For instance, the "Wizard Arrives" folder doesn't seem to necessarily correspond to one of the 7 plot points in the overall story, nor is it a "chapter." You seem to be weaving in several character plot points under one section heading. How would you define these sections? And...could you give an example (maybe this is another video) of how one weaves in plot points for the protagonist and antogonist in a scene? e.g. What would it look like for the protagonist's and antagonists's pinch point 1 to both exist in the same scene?
You're absolutely right - my folders are in general what's happening at the point that my plot threads cross. Sometimes I'll have things crossing at a point in the story that isn't part of one my main threads, and that's where you'll see a folder that doesn't necessarily correspond with any major "points." Thanks for asking this and your other queries - I will absolutely clarify and put these on my list for new vids this year! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave me a comment!
This is a great video! I appreciate how thorough and complete this is. The way you detail the process so clearly is very helpful. I think anyone who watches this will identify with where they are in the process and will be able to see the big picture more clearly. Thank you for sharing your experience so clearly that it creates a roadmap for others to follow. Thank you for sharing your expertise, and thank you for all your work and time on this.
Jessica is really pretty.
Treat middle book like the middle of book, add drama, suspense and mystery - like old fashion movie shaorts like Batman, etc.
Very good video. Thank you very much
Would you be willing to do a walk through of how you use InDesign & Vellum?
I've been debating doing just that - must be a sign for me to get on that one! Thanks for watching :-)
Thanks for posting. If I download Scrivner for iPad and plan on doing all my writing on my iPad can I use the files app to backup my project or do I still need drop box ?
I have the iPad as my traveling ‘laptop’ with the Logitech keyboard/case combo on the 10.9 inch. So when I saw that Scriv was for the iPad, I grabbed it and have since moved to Scrivener from Google Docs. Now I still have the Google Docs as a backup, I usually copy paste into the google doc before I finish for the day. I am LOVING Scrivener for background stuff like the character docs, the plot docs, research docs and all of that jazz. It has been a lifesaver and just about time as it’s PREPTOBER! As of this comment. I will most likely be using the app to run my NaNoWriMo 2023 story, that I sorta already started, but have barely 1400 words on. Barely over a 20th of the 50k….
Are you able to share who your editor is? TIA
Hi, I have watched a shit ton of videos on plot structures, and I just got to say, yours is the best, the only one which makes sense and is easy to understand and follow. Thank you so much! You've got yourself a new subscriber.
What a delightful comment - thank you so much for brightening my day! I'm so happy you enjoyed it and found it useful!
