It's no longer a secret... DFW G.I. Joe Show Valaverse Panel
Is there a spot for 6" vehicles in a collection - sure. Small vehicles, like the Ferret, and medium vehicles like the various jeeps are reasonable for a significant amount of collectors out there. Large vehicles are a challenge & frankly I too question how many more can reasonably be expected to sell - at some point, space limitations will prohibit it. IMO, our hobby is not necessarily growing & I think a lot of the "success" of the big vehicles are for flipping. I think the large vehicles will hit a wall - they will be successful until they are not & there won't be much warning to it.
Since you asked for feedback, I will share that I have zero interest in a mech suit. I believe that many people are willing to continue supporting larger vehicles as long as there is nostalgia driving the decision to sacrifice the space at home or in the rare occurrence like when I purchased both versions of the Vanguard in an effort to support the line.
I'm not a huge fan of funko pops head design but they actually have really well sculpted and cool bodies/ effects and the paint is pretty great for a low budget small figure. They are also have such a deep resume of shows and characters that you can get some of your favorite obscure characters.
you know..
That is awesome, I never knew that existed. I got a Kessel mine cardboard playset from Ollies from the Solo movie not too long ago. A cool playset will elevate a figure line in my opinion. Not sure of the costs but you should do an homage to the Palitoy Action Force playset but scale it to the Valaverse figures.
I think what makes vehicles so attractive is that they allow for mini diorama displays where your figures are interacting with the environment. As a kid its a totally different reason. While big playsets are likely out of the question smaller pieces of equipment the characters can engage with make fun displays. Think gun placement with sandbags, barrels, crates, communication devices
I’d like to see “modular” styled mini playsets that work well separately but also snap together; something similar to the ARAH battle bunkers. Great video, Bobby. 👊🏾
I think the Vamp is actually the “perfect” size, price, styling example
I do think the 4inch vehicles are the sweet spot for space and styling, but the 6inch figures are knocking it outta the park.
We love the offerings; we do have the space consideration.
6" vehicles are very cool. So far I have not purchased any. Space is thing but if it is an item that interests me, then I will surely purchase and find space. Right now, I'm more interested in just figures. But someone is going to put out big item that will be a must have.
This dudes passion for toys always draws me in. I dig when people really truly appreciate shit. Even plastic things with fun gimmicks and gadgets. Some things will always be cool deep down. And I love the mixture of just toy coolness with entrepreneurial ideas discussed in these videos
I really enjoy having the VAMP and the Stinger in my collection. I really hope Classified does a SNAKE armor and a FANG. I wanted a H.I.S.S. but the size is too big. It would basically just become a $300 prop. The smaller vehicles are easier to display and move around.
Would rather have a customizable play set. I realy want donatellos workshop. But as for vehicle i want cool cars with batmobile weapons ect. I think the turtle van hits the perfect balance of play features. I almost wish that model cars where to scale with figures.
Sizes is always an issue, I would much prefer smaller vehicles to larger ones. And I would prefer a smaller price point, I believe most collectors collect multiple lines and don't want to tie up their budget in one thing. And finally having an exclusive figure with a vehicle I think is just wrong to do to collectors
I think it will be determined by what the market will sustain. Probably why crowdsourcing is a good model, like HasLab. For me, the Batmobiles from McFarlane Toys were a must-have. After that I ran out of space so selling my HasLab vehicles. Maybe someone else would have chosen the Ecto 1 or Just Cobra Vehicles as their "must-have". Another lesson can be taken from the Mattel Creations Snake Lair. A prototype was displayed at a con and the feedback was that people thought it was too big where I think a lot of people would have been happy with something more of the size of a Castle Grayskull and also telling was that it was never part of the original line, so the nostalgia probably wasn't as strong. I don't think 6" is going away. Even the incredibly well painted Star Wars 4" vintage line just don't' have the presence a 6" figure has. As for playsets, maybe a modular approach would be better: where a piece can fit in a detolf, with plenty of accessories, for a great environment (I'd love an interior environment of the X-Mansion in my detolf!), but you can buy future unique modules to connect them and make a grander playset for those that have the space. Great topic for thought and discussion. Would creating and selling files for 3D printed playsets be viable?
Really interesting video! Vehicles are nice, but like you've said, space is an issue, and when you have one, if you take toy photography, you sometimes end up wanting to have a backdrop for it. With regards to the future, could I please suggest, perhaps making modular and magnetised/collapsible dioramas? Each one does not have to be big, but the modular nature of it allows them to be connected together easily, then collapsed and take up minimal space when in storage. Personally, I think this could be less expensive to make than playsets (as dioramas would not need to have play features), and thus more affordable for collectors? The modular nature of it would also allow you to release additions/extensions periodically, which would keep things fresh and interesting. You could also choose to do multiple themes for the dioramas - e.g. urban street, warehouse, sci-fi/laboratory, etc. Anyway, just my two cents. Thanks!
Kenner and Hasbro already figured this out in the 1980's with 3.75" GI Joe and Star Wars. 1:18 scale vehicles were manageable for play and were affordable. Anything bigger is unwieldly to play with, takes a lot of display space and is very expensive. Every 1:12 vehicle Hasbro creates now needs to be a goddamn Haslab project just to get funded. If we collectors really want vehicles, then we need to go back to the vintage 1:18 scale that we all grew up with and abandon the modern 6" 1:12 scale we currently collect.
Always good to listen to pros talking about their craft.
I 100% thought that was ROBO running the store!!!!😁
I just don't have the space to display them. Got some fonthe McFarlane batmobiles and they are just huge. I'm happy to collect hot wheels of the batmobiles beside the figures instead for a display shelf.
A mechsuit under $150 from valaverse would be nice 😅
Six minutes into the video I will say this. You are absolutely right about 1/12 scale vehicles now are really good and detailed. Space and price point IS an issue. As a collector and content maker at this current moment, I don’t have either the money or space to collect for any content right now. BUT what I can also say is that awareness is your ally. I recently purchased a NewBright r/c car that is 1/12 scale and the figures are closely able to fit perfectly into the cockpit. But for the size that it was, the price was a steal from a bargain store. Even at a regular retail store, NewBright cars have a really good price in comparison to what you guys and Ramen toys are doing. With that being said, there are others that could also modify an r/c vehicle to accommodate a six inch action figure, cutting and apoxying a vehicle just for the task of photography, stop motion etc. I was recently on independent sale websites, looking for pre-owned and used doll vehicles which also is really cheep to modify for my action figures, and use in my content. So in my opinion, I think it’s price point. Inflation, resource cost, and production is a tornado of conflict for a manufacturer and collector.
Those vehicles are a lot larger than 6 inches 🤔 they look more like 1/12 scale vehicles 🤓😁😆
Love the figures but you got to have transportation for the battle field Bigger weapons
6in scale is an eventual death sentence for every collector. EXCEPT those with tons of money. Because as you make enough vehicles and God forbid playsets, and you collect multiple 6in lines......you will eventually have to build extra rooms in your home or eventually rent or build a storage warehouse to display them, no matter if they are MIB or loose. It just takes up too much room. I collect Marvel Legends, G.I. Joe Classified and Star Wars.....now, I'm not a ravenous collector, I only buy the figs I like, so it does not affect me like it does others. I don't army build. And it has taken up a ton of real estate in my toy room. Some of this stuff has actually gotten laughable.....The Black Series Sail Barge.....ML Galactus......just preposterous! Now, imagine the price tag and size of the following......X-Men Jet, Danger Room Playset, Millennium Falcon, Slave-1, Sand crawler.....look at the size of the Vintage Collection vehicles of those same vehicles. And.....to end it all.....all just say the following.....Terror Drome, Defiant and......USS Flagg......😂 It's just not realistic or sustainable......not for me at least. But hey to each their own. I'll tell you when I realized how the cool can wear off very quickly on something that is simply too big and takes up too much space. I always wanted a full suit of Samurai Armour, ever since I saw Batman in 89 and he had one in his mansion. Well about 12 years ago, I finally got one. And my wife was nice enough to allow me to add on a hobby room to our home 20x20 sq ft. After buying a full mannequin to display the armour. I had this guy up for about 5 years before I realized that it was basically like having a whole other person always standing in your room/home .....news flash......I'm not a multimillionaire orphan whose parents were murdered when I was a kid.....I don't live in a mansion......I live in a 3 BR, 2 Bath family home. After a while the armour just looked out of place with my orange peal textured, eggshell colored sheetrock walls ....and 10ft ceilings. Lol I sold that suit of armour to Kerwin Frost. Maybe he has the room for it, I sure don't. So I guess I said all of that to say..... yes.....size does matter!
6” scale vehicles are doomed. Marketing to adult collectors is a recipe for failure. Make toys for kids kids are the future
Something to think about is the popularity of RC rock crawlers and people always on the hunt for scale bodies to convert. I have seen people spend crazy money for a high detailed toy so they can cut it up. I think tapping into that hobby could help support sales. Maybe offer the vehicle as a unpainted shell to he support the costs of tooling or molds
Give us O ring figures.
The opportunity came and went, and you ALL lost out.
Mech suit best you can do for $300 max!
If you're asking for customer input, here it is: We want display pieces that "add" to the sense of action we want to create when we put our collection up. That's really it. Something that adds to the feeling of immersion and though not everyone has space for a full or partial diorama, creating vehicles, figures, even addons and special effects all mix together to give us, the customer, a display that brings to life the reality of the fantasy we are trying to envision for our collection. This can be blood effects, the gritty and raw visual intensity of war and its consequences, vehicles that may come with explosive battle damage, fires and destruction, heroic survivors and heinous villains. Of course, this all must come at a cost and you as the producer of said tools of immersion can present to us prices that reflect both the work you've put into creation but also the reality of figure / prop production itself. A large variety of such "toys", and I hesitate to call them toys when we are building worlds where figures live and die within our imaginations, gives us options to zero in on for what what we will feel gives vibrancy and nuance to our display sets. How this pans out in a production and logistical sense is another matter. I believe there is a market for people like me that want to flesh out, in collector terms, a place on our desks or shelves where conflict and war, heroic acts and merciless assaults can play out before us. We only need the props of war to make it happen. Large or mid sized vehicles figure into that equation but should be viewed as a luxury addition. I personally am amazed and excited at what some groups are creating, things that once were only a dream for the collector, such as Lewin Resources Metroplex. The success of that massive figure makes it clear; create something that people really, truly want and have been dreaming about and IT WILL SELL, even if it's a limited production, people will chase after it and the vibe it gives fans.
I might get one
I know its a tough one to start but dive into 1/6th. I did a year and a half ago and never looked back. Been selling my 3.75 to fund it and its the most fun i have had collecting in years
I think you mean 1:12 vehicles. Six inch vehicles are exactly that. Six inch vehicles which are very small.
I don't have one but being able to take apart a Large vehicle such as the Dragonfly is a must , but yes cost and space is an issue.
At some point 1:12 vehicles are going to become too expensive and the crowdfund nature of a lot of these adds to the the cost. Personally, I wish Hasbro did not include electronics with the HISS and Dragonfly. It's a nice feature, but who actually displays them with the headlights on? And, how big can they go? The Rattler is probably at higher end size-wise.
I am glad you were able to show us what you made how cheap Hasbro is. But you should've bought something small business is what fuels the economy and it's hard work.
Im an xray tech, you could definitely do that. I was thinking it before you said it.
Medium size vehicles would also be a good direction to go, for example the Trubble Bubble, Tiger Paw, and even the Sky Hawk are great all around mid sized vehicles for 1:12 scale figures, and those can actually be put in stores.
Solid video. As a collector of 6", I am your customer, and Hasbro's. I passed on the vanguard and Ramen Racer because I have no attachment to them. As one with the money and space, I INSTANTLY regret buying the dragonfly once I assembled it, and furthermore fully regret backing the Rattler. I may buy a MOBAT, out of nostalgia, but I won't buy a Mauler. If Valaverse put out a great Tank, at a great price, I probably would not buy it. I buy most of these out of nostalgia, and the Valaverse i buy, I buy because they fill holes in spots I wish Hasbro filled (ie-Pandora). I'm not interested in anymore 4 wheelers of motorcycles. I would much more rather Hasbro concentrate on the old ARAH "battle stations" like the Machine gun defense, bivuac, and things to SUPPLEMENT the collection. We aren't playing with these. I'm not swooshing a dragonfly around my house. I would much rather you concentrate on Scenes, and smaller sets like a mortar defense, Cobra Bunker. Thise kinds of things rather than anymore vehicles. If I buy anymore classified vehicles, it will only be a MOBAT, or something that REALLY hits the nostalgia for me. People keep repeating "haslab whale". Do I want that? Yes, can I afford it? Yes. Will I buy it? Right now, I'm probably a NO. Smaller scene sets. That's where your market should go instead of vehicles.
Got 2 Ramen vans coming : The all black/armored one for my Classified Dreadnoks and the "Team" one for my Series 3 Valaverse "Team" van...
For me, the viability in a 1:12 scale vehicle comes from how easily it can interact with the figures in the line. Cars, tanks, and boats have a lot more value because it makes sense to pose figures in, on, or around the vehicle. Air vehicles are really limited to the pilots and then have a lot of surface area that isn't interactive. I'd much rather have a WHALE or Moray than a Skystriker or Night Raven for that reason. A large playset that can serve as a diorama display for a large number of figures would have some appeal, but only if it was well done.
My toy collecting and hobby designing perspective: Big vehicles are cool however it needs a lot of play features. I mean small compartments to stick in weapons, or a generator that can be taken out. panels that can open and that a few figures can be busy with the vehicle. Not just a car with a drivers seat and a trunk that opens.
Interesting that you didn't cover the 6 inch scale Star Wars Black Series vehicles, they sure did a Tie Fighter and a Snowspeeder, retail, and they had a hard time to get rid of them. Meanwhile in 3.75 they can sell them, even bigger ones and playsets. I feel like different brands have quite different buyers, and they are want to fill up space different ways. I think in Marvel 6 inch vehicles won't sell well, the limit is bike size there. On the other hand, Transformers collectors are buying Titan Class robots like hot cake, the reissues are selling out preorder easy. And those are big ass, tall shelf eaters. I think your brand, like Joes can be a home of maximum plane size stuff, which is already huge, but the focus should be on paint and details. Lights, sounds, gimmicks are more for kids' items. And the cross sale is crucial. Just remember the artwork of the Joe vehicle boxes, and you may wanted to get all the figures from the picture as the crew, and it can work both ways. Figures can include accesories that you can store, build in into the bikes, cars and so. Like you can buy a bike, but you can buy a figure which can make it their own bike, just how they can add their things on. Accesories which stand their own with the figure, but they can 'decorate' the vehicle. I think collectors like variability, only one default option makes shit boring.
I want to find out what that guy's son does today, what incredible patience and foresight to treat his toys so well as a child 😂
People can forget how many different skills go into to be a good toy designer, and even you have your own company to make quality action figures, yet folks without all i just mentioned would still don't take your free advice when they are doing their kickstarter. Wild.
I’d like to see smaller vehicles without figures so it would be a better price point, modular play sets and a chest holster for the reaper driver. I’d really like to see action force in US stores.
Motorbikes, drones based on current military, small sci fi (light) vehicles i think would work. Lower cost, and able to troop build.
Maybe organic vehicles. Horses and something cobra la would love
Bbut BOBBY... we want a bike for that exclusive pandora !!!
