What did we learn about the Dolphins?
#nfl #football #miamidolphins #tuatagovailoa #mikemcdaniel
This is the first preseason game featuring the starters for the Miami Dolphins. Tua Tagovailoa led the Dolphins to an early touchdown to take the lead early in the game. Without Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, the offense looked very efficient. Mike McDaniel did a great job calling plays that allowed Tua to get the ball out of his hands quickly. Jonnu Smith and River Cracraft each caught two passes with the latter scoring the opening drive touchdown. I give my 5 most important takeaways from the Miami Dolphins vs the Washington Commanders.

    Very underrated skill, top players like Patrick have great pocket presence and pocket sense. Although I think a player like Jalen gets looked at as a bit overrated in this category. I’ve always been worried without Kelce Jalen could take some serious damage behind the line. But Tua is the same situation I feel much more safe with. Tua will shine this upcoming year. I think the run game takes the next step allowing Tua to open up the defense a bit more this season. Pair that with his pocket presence and ability to get free, it’s a scary three headed monster.

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a reasonable take. Though I'd temper any expectations that have to do with comparisons to Mahomes or Hurts. Ideally, I'd like him to be mobile enough to escape linemen that are bearing down on him in the pocket. He does an ok job, but I'd like to see that improve. Other than that, maybe pick up 4 or 5 yards when it's man coverage and the LBs are 15 yards downfield, with their backs turned to the QB. I'll take it. I'm not expecting anything super dynamic, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if that were the case.

    Hey guys, should the Dolphins target their running backs more?

  • @c2jones
    @c2jones 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    There is a reason they want Tua to slim down and start running the ball. Otherwise, the defense can just target him, unlike what they can for most NFL QBs. Last season, he was the worst quarterback in the entire NFL in run grade (28.5), according to PFF. Tua is the only quarterback with a run grade below 40, and it's below 30. You don't need to be a Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen type of runner to succeed in the NFL, but some kind of ability to create extra yards with your legs is important, and the lack of this talent limits Tua's ceiling and ability to exploit defenses.

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Mobility is certainly not his strength. But it can be improved. Let's hope this newfound focus on playmaking helps him perform against the better defenses in the NFL.

    • @c2jones
      @c2jones 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MattNewton In his first year, when he was slimmer and more nimble, he had some nice runs. Let's hope he can return to that again. Some fear him getting hurt again, as he has been brittle, but in truth, his major injuries were either flukes or the result of very aggressive hits. He may not suffer those again for years.

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@c2jones That's a good point on his injuries. A couple of them in college, he held the ball too long and put himself in a bad spot. Saban wasn't very pleased with that. I rather him be nimble enough to escape hits instead of being a sitting duck. But he has to make smart decisions to protect himself.

    • @c2jones
      @c2jones 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MattNewton That gift he has with improvising on the roll and allowing receivers to make a second move is something we don't want to trample. He gets into trouble, in my assessment, not from holding the ball too long (in his NFL career), but from being a statute in the pocket and making hasty decisions. When he rolls and can find receivers breaking for the ball, he's hard to stop. If he starts getting more mobile with his legs, he can freeze defenders from rushing in on him.

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@c2jones I was really referring to college in regard to holding the ball too long. McDaniel coaches him to do the opposite. His 1st 2 years in the NFL, he was still recovering from that devastating hip injury, so I don't think he was at his peak. We might see (physically) peak Tua for the first time this season. And it couldn't come soon enough.

      @c2jones 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm one of them who does blame Tua for that throw. That Claypool copout is amongst the most convenient (but flawed) grab-bag apologetic exercises going. Claypool is a very infrequently used receiver with scant few reps with Tua in game situations. Moreover, he was in heavy traffic. He was the very last person Tua should be going to in a critically important drive in a critically important game. There were others more open in single coverage with far safer, higher percentage odds of completion. It was only 2nd down. Blaming the interception on Claypool ignores the decision Tua made. Tua is responsible for managing and protecting the ball. He didn't need to put his trust in Claypool. There were easier opportunities elsewhere. And, Tua stared at Claypool the whole time. The DB was just waiting for it. Matt has an excellent video on that on this very channel. A couple weeks back. It is accurate.

    I'm with you 100% on this, Matt. Even with injuries, maximizing personnel means just that. McDaniel cannot get into a mode of codependency on Hill and Waddle, whereas otherwise the entire scheme changes. I understand adjusting to available personnel, but not so much that he's reverting to a totally vanilla package, vs the specialized ones.

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well said. And I presume some of these packages are born from practice during the week and then incorporated into the scripted plays. But there is an opportunity cost associated when not maximizing the personnel available on any given play. In a game of inches, you have no plays to spare.

I genuinely believe though of all the QBs Tua has the most potential to be great simply because up until now we’ve only gotten about 50% of his actual level. Ppl forget how bad the hip injury was in college and to this day he still barely used the hip in his throws. This was also the first offseason he had where he had a QB coach to tweak his throws and give him more confidence in using that hip. By all accounts Tua has been a lot faster and twitchier in training camp and he’s making 5-6 wow throws a day because of the confidence he now has in the hip again. I believe we’ll see a Tua this year we’ve never seen before.

    While physical teams still matter, dynamic offenses have overcome physical defenses with finesse simply by outscoring them. During the Marino years, the Dolphins won many games where they were not the most physical team on the field. Same with Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. The rule changes to help the passing game have negated the ability for the secondary to be too physical. It's mostly a front 7 thing now. But more times than not, being physical matters.

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      "But more times than not, being physical matters." Agreed. I think you can get away with a finesse style of play in the regular season or against inferior opponents and tally up the victories. In the playoffs, it's another thing entirely. Marino's teams were often toppled by more physical teams in the playoffs and especially in his only Super Bowl. I agree about the rule changes but the last teams standing every season often have a strong element of physicality built into their DNA.

    • @c2jones
      @c2jones 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MattNewton I would generally concur with that. I could point to three or four exceptions in the playoffs here and there, but ultimately, the physicality of opponents was superior in their playoff losses, particularly to Buffalo and yes, to San Francisco. I would also add, however, that those teams weren't just more physical. Dan could have potentially gotten around that. It was that those opponents had better talent as well and were far more balanced. It's just that the passing game is so key now. For instance, on your question, are the Dolphins physical enough to win a SB? I think they can outscore more physical teams if Tua keeps his composure. He tends to be especially mistake-prone when he feels any kind of consistent pressure (unlike Burrow who thrives with it). But winning a SB with the opponents winning both sides of the line? If Mahomes was on this team, maybe. Very unsure about Tua. His supporters want everything around him to be bulletproof as it is.

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      "It was that those opponents had better talent as well and were far more balanced." Agreed. And because they had better talent, they were able to control the lines of scrimmage and thus impose a brand the physicality the Dolphins couldn't match. Shula went from being the bully in the 70's to getting bullied by the 80's. It's likely because he had too many underwhelming drafts during the Marino years. And Marino could only cover up so much of the team's flaws. He also went from coaching a physical brand of football to a finesse brand once he realized he had a cheat code at QB. When Marino's team ran into bullies, they generally gave up their lunch money. I hope McDaniel's team can learn from that.

    • @c2jones
      @c2jones 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MattNewton This is exactly correct. Many overlook the dynamics that you have just highlighted. Under the Shula years, initially, when the Dolphins were just coming off their SB loss to a physical Washington team and John Riggins, they still had Foster at Center and the killer Bees on defense. But that eventually faded. Bust after bust after bust, even on positions that weren't critical while critical ones were overlooked, is what plagued the Marino years and highly contributed to his rosters being less fortified than that of his divisional rivals, particularly Buffalo. Throughout Shula's entire time with Dan, not one other HOF player was drafted, very few Pro Bowl players, and not once a 1000-yard rusher. (Jimmy Johnson delivered all that in just his short time here.) Remember, in the pre-free agency era when NFL teams were built exclusively through the draft, missing on a first-round pick was even more costly than it is today. When Don Shula did it in back-to-back drafts in 1986 and 1987 as he looked to develop a defense to complement the Dolphins' high-flying Dan Marino-led offense, he effectively doomed the franchise to constantly come up short when it counted in the playoffs. There are many examples, but let's consider John Bosa and Eric Kumerow (John is the father of Nick and Joey). Both Bosa and Kumerow were drafted higher than their talent should have dictated, and neither player started a single game during three years as Dolphins. Some pundits point to Marino's lack of Super Bowl rings and suggest that's a detractor to him. The truth is that Shula's poor drafting in Marino's early years led to his status as the eternal bridesmaid. And when it came to trades, it was just as bad. In Shula's final year here, the owner opened up the checkbook and gave Shula all he wanted. They had 19 1st round draft choices on the team. It mattered not. They were quickly eliminated in the playoffs. It's a different league now with the rules and they can only manage with what they have. I feel that their running game (with all that speed) will be the biggest difference-maker. And perhaps Jonnu as a relief valve for Tua.

      @MattNewton 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@c2jones "I feel that their running game (with all that speed) will be the biggest difference-maker." I believe in their running game, but in short yardage situations, they come up short more often than I'd like. And going 5-wide on 4th and 1 with a pocket QB is not the answer. I will say this though: if you are going to have a finesse running game and need to pick up short yardage against more physical opponents, you have to out-scheme them. You need a lot of creativity and flawless execution. It's possible, but it requires a lot of work and a lot of planning. It's much easier to just line up a do a tush-push (not saying the Dolphins should do this, of course).

Grier and Ross would have likely waited if they had the choice. With a tough early schedule and so much riding on this year being the year because of these salaries, the Dolphins caved because they need Tua a full participant in camp. As it is, his apologists point to everything under the son for his shortcomings; OL, scheme, plays called, drops, routes, everything. The excuses are already built-in. The Tua, Waddle and Hill trio are the highest paid in NFL history. Mahomes is the only QB in the current era playing well in his 2nd contract. Will Tua be the next? Mostert and Waddle were both injured for this game, as were all 3 interior starting offensive linemen. Achane and Tyreek can't play 100% of the offensive snapa, so when they needed to catch a breath that was literally all McDaniel had available to put on the field. My guess is that's a large part of the reason McDaniel wanted to spend a 4th round pick on a 3rd 4.3 speed RB, and why Miami signed players known for great separation at WR3 and TE

      Thanks for the comment. This is more about the Dolphins maximizing available talent than it is blaming McDaniel for players that were unavailable. @@MattNewton I understand what you're saying, but with Mostert and Waddle out, that left just Achane and Tyreek as the super explosive playmakers. It wouldn't make sense to start Jeff Wilson over Achane when Tyreek is on the field just so that you can stagger snaps so that one of them is always on the field. It also wouldn't make sense to have those guys run slower to conserve energy. In both of those cases you'd be hampering the offense's ability to pressure defenses with multiple dangerous threats, which is the whole point of their offense. The far bigger issue is the interior offensive line injuries. The offense as a whole was substantially less dangerous when they were out, and McDaniel resorted to a higher percentage of gimmicky run plays due to the inability to punish defenses with inside zone runs like he did in the beginning of the season. If Miami's starting line played 18 games together like Buffalo did rather than their top 3 guys playing just two halves together all season, the personnel used on any one play wouldn't matter. All 5 RBs played decently when the line was healthier, and Tua had no issues spreading the ball around when his pocket time wasn't an atrocious 1.8/1.9/2.0 seconds like it was weeks 16-18

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@smudgeous4068 The injures took a toll on the entire team down the stretch and the offensive line was certainly no exception. It affected the entire offense. But there is a reason why coaches never use injuries as an excuse. Because everyone has to deal with them. And I don't mean to change the subject (forgive me), but the defense was decimated as well losing Chubb, Phillips, Baker, Van Ginkel, Howard and others and they still performed admirably in the final two games of the season against Buffalo and Kansas City. I believe Fangio did a better job with a decimated unit than McDaniel did with his. A coach may be dealing with injuries (it's a variable that's impossible to predict) but he has to give his remaining players the best opportunity to succeed. In the playoff game, I believe the defense once again outperformed the offense and McDaniel got a lot of his guys back for that one. McDaniel has to do a better job across the board, but his use of personnel is a major one for me. Again, the good thing is the Dolphins signed more playmakers this offseason so it shouldn't be a problem in 2024, I hope.

      @@MattNewton I think the weather played a larger factor in defensive success for both teams in the wildcard game than you're crediting it. By the end of the game it was 50F "feels like" colder than 2022's wildcard game in Buffalo, which kicked off at 23F. Mahomes was playing behind the #1 pass block win rate O-Line facing a squad starting old edge rushers off the street and a secondary missing half of its starters, yet had 1 incompletion fewer than Tua and posted a sub-85 passer rating. Tua was facing the #2 defense featuring the league's best DT with multiple interior O-Line starters missing. KC didn't need to blitz to generate pressure so had more guys in coverage and did just fine against Miami's weakened run game. Achane had 9 yards on 6 carries with a long of 3. Mostert had a long of 8 but averaged 3 1/2 yards on his other 7 carries. Much like Mahomes in the Super Bowl in Tampa, Miami needed the O-Line to be healthier to have any shot at competing in the game. Their best skill players were hampered by some combination of bad interior blocking, playing while banged up (Mostert + Waddle both played but were listed as questionable), and in extreme cold.

    • @MattNewton
      @MattNewton หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@smudgeous4068 I can't discount the weather being a factor, but both teams played in the same conditions. The Dolphins often get favorable weather conditions (advantages in Sept/October) at home but I've yet to hear a team say, "we lost to the Dolphins because of the weather in Miami." Speaking of Miami, the week 18 game vs the Bills was in Florida. That defense was heavily decimated. They lost additional players in the game. They forced multiple turnovers and even a late turnover on downs. But the offense couldn't come up with a crucial scoring drive in any of their 4th quarter possessions. I believe it's largely a coaching issue while I believe (I truly hate to put words in your mouth) you think it's an injury/player availability issue. I get your perspective. But I think the coaching is the main culprit. Every time the offense fails (KC, Buffalo, Tenn, Balt) it's because of injuries along the o-line. If that's the case, they should have re-signed Robert Hunt and acquired better, more durable players along the interior o-line. It should have been an offseason priority. They didn't, so it suggests to me it's not a priority for them because they think they can coach around it because of McDaniel's scheme. When KC lost that SB to SF, you know what they did? They made the o-line an offseason priority. And as you said, "Mahomes was playing behind the #1 pass block win rate." That suggests to me the KC coaching staff realized they could not overcome that obstacle and addressed it in the offseason. The Dolphins decided to add more weapons to work around the o-line. If that's their plan (a presumption, I know) they really have to own it if it is ineffective against quality defenses.

      @@BigKahunaKai711 That's true. Washington didn't want to pay Cousins and Minnesota stepped in. Cowboys are doing something similar with Prescott. It's fascinating, to say the least.

    Tua gets better every season and is a top 5 qb so he should be paid. The Dolphins messed up by not paying him way before this. Miami doesn't deserve him and will regret it for years and years if they lose him. He's being disrespected badly. Some other team will love to get him. Watch how low the receivers yardage drops without Tua. Dolphins waited to long to start trying to pay everybody all at once.

      He's the best QB the Dolphins have had since Marino and he fits McDaniel's system very well. The Dolphins have to pay him on par with Goff or Lawrence because that's the market rate if they want to keep him. But I'm not sure the Dolphins feel the same way.

      @@MattNewton He is a mediocre QB not on par with a #5 pick. I see him as another Tanehill. He has not shown that he is a driving force, he is a bus rider. They want him to succeed and have given him so much support that it is ridiculous...even Skylar would have done better given the same support.!!!!...tua in my eyes is just a mid pack QB...give the little boy 45 mil....and he should be happy...he can;'t carry a team...he is too little...too brittle...

      @@gavriilnick4225 Sometimes certain things have more value to some than others. Tua has more value to the Dolphins than other teams. They have to decide how much that value is. The way I see it, it's less about how much Tua will cost the Dolphins as much as have they seen enough to commit to him long term. If they haven't seen enough then wait and deal with the consequences of waiting. That's really all there is too it.

      I think 50M is the minimum the Dolphins can offer Tua's camp. But is it enough? The total guaranteed money over the life of the contract is the likely sticking point.
