  • With Tua Tagovailoa now holding the Dolphins franchise record-setting deal, expectations for his performance have reached unprecedented heights. This monumental contract not only underscores the Miami Dolphins' commitment to him as their franchise quarterback but also amplifies the pressure on Tua to deliver at the highest level. Fans, analysts, and critics alike will be closely watching to see if he can justify the substantial investment with consistent, elite-level play. The record-setting deal comes with the burden of heightened scrutiny and the weight of leading a team with championship aspirations. As the face of the franchise and the centerpiece of Miami’s long-term plans, Tua will need to not only maintain his impressive skills but also elevate his game to new heights, ensuring that the Dolphins' significant financial commitment translates into tangible success on the field.

Hey guys, what do you think about Tua's new contract extension? Let me know in the comment section below!

Grier didn't have the ability to wait until next year. Tua was going to hold out. Players won't honor their existing contracts if they know they can force an early extension.
Grier and Ross would have likely waited if they had the choice.
Again, it’s a three-year commitment to Tua, with only $3 million in guarantees that would linger into 2027, only if the Dolphins decide to move on. Advantage Grier.
    I'm relieved by that.

The Ravens somehow got former MVP Lamar Jackson to play under his 5th year option and he was far more accomplished than Tua is at this stage of his career. Other QBs have played on the franchise tag which is a bit different because it's obviously more money.
But I think McDaniel and Grier have been consistent in building up Tua's confidence and did not want the contract to be a distraction to his seemingly fragile ego. Especially since, they have an out before the 2027 season.

Lamar didn't threaten to hold out. Tua did. Other QBs played through their 5th year contract, but Tua refused. That's the difference.
A contract doesn't mean a contract to some. People should remember that, but most are too happy to have others spend when the money isn't theirs. If one has a contract, they should honor it.
With a tough early schedule and so much riding on this year being the year because of these salaries, the Dolphins caved because they need Tua a full participant in camp. Let's call it the NFL version of extortion. It used to be more common than it is now.

Good point. The Dolphins had no better options for 2024 so maybe they felt their hands were forced into the contract. But the commitment is manageable so that is a positive for the Dolphins.
I do wonder, however, when was the last time a QB under contract held out into regular season.
      Just curious.

I don't recall hearing about an under-contract QB holdout for some time now. It's been so long that I'd have to look.

My previous post here is missing. The point was that it's been some time since I've heard of an under-contract QB holding out. So much that I'd have to go and look.

Trevor Lawrence was especially overpaid. Compare his numbers to salary.
Back to Tua, with this contract, indeed Tua needs to elevate others going forward with a depleted roster, as opposed to needing to be upheld by others.
As it is, his apologists point to everything under the son for his shortcomings; OL, scheme, plays called, drops, routes, everything.
    The excuses are already built-in.
The Tua, Waddle and Hill trio are the highest paid in NFL history.
Mahomes is the only QB in the current era playing well in his 2nd contract. Will Tua be the next? Is he in the same conversation as Mahomes? We shall see.

      "The excuses are already built-in."
      Exactly.
Outside of maybe the interior o-line, Tua has everything he needs on offense (barring injury) to have a career season. Frankly, anything less would be a disappointment. But I'm optimistic he'll have his best year yet.
      We shall see.

It's funny. A couple years ago, there were so many people who were up in arms because of Jones' contract. Then, people were comparing Trevor Lawrence to Daniel Jones at the end of last season, stats and all. Yet, today no one is really up in arms about Lawrence's contract.
      Go figure.

They should be. I have high hopes for Tua, though he hasn't warranted that kind of money yet in my eyes, and I have expectations for Love, Purdy and Goff. But Jones and Lawrence especially, are certainly overpaid. Look at Lawrence's numbers. He has more turnovers than scores.
