Cloud in terms of real-world immediate financial literacy, the place you want to put your money is a Money Marketing Account. These accounts usually have minimum deposit amounts and flat-rate payments to keep the account open, but in exchange, you can get as much as 6% APR (compounding monthly) just for having your money sit in said account. There are usually checking/withdrawal fees, so don't put money in there as like a checking account, instead, have a dedicated checking account (0.1-0.5% APR but little-to-no fees usually) within the same bank to transfer large sums of money into such that the withdrawal fee is comparatively little. Also, the interest yields are taxable via capital gains (unlike a ROTH IRA), so it's more of a medium-term investment strategy. Large sums of cash that you want to be highly available to you and not locked away in investments or retirement funds should always be in Money Marketing Accounts. MMAs are usually only offered at Credit Unions - I would personally never trust Chase, WF, BoA, or any other large commercial bank with my money. They will do anything and everything to swindle you out of money that could have been yours should you have chosen a Credit Union instead. I personally use CIT Bank (not to be confused with Citibank) at a 4.35% APR MM Account with a $5,000 deposit minimum, primarily because their credit cards program has a high cashback program (3/2/1 & membership perks) and they have no account-opening/maintenance fees (unlike Chase). UFB direct has a 4.01% APR MM account with a $0 minimum but a $100 account opening fee. They are also a growing bank so being an early client of theirs might prove beneficial (or not, depending on if they can stay in the game). If you or a family member (no matter how distant) works at Boeing, **GO TO BECU**. They offer 6.00% APR savings accounts with ZERO minimums and ZERO fees. Not even a overdraft fee. They limit who is eligable based on whether or not they or a family member work at Boeing. If you can provide them some evidence to relation to a Boeing employee, they will get you in (a friend of mine's cousin's husband was a Boeing Employee and he got in). I think their credit cards also have insane cashback schemes (3/3/3%) and insane interest rates (12% w/ 700 credit score). I'm not sure about other Employee Credit Unions but Boeing is better than every non-credit union I've ever seen. Even better than Navy Fed. This is not financial advice, I am not a CFA (yet).
