    What she's talking about is called gentrification and it's a problem in a lot of places - lower socioeconomic area (read: Harlem) becomes fashionable, prices of RENT rise, forcing out original occupants and pricing them out of buying. Some of her delivery may have been stereotypical but this information is relevant. Your understanding is binary, hers is nuanced. The kind of "improvements" are massive influxes of development money to sell high-priced apartments, which destroys communities. Yes, you can indeed have your house taken by rate increases and rent increases. The other stuff sounds dumb tho.

    • @purlp9483
      @purlp9483 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree with you, but you should not say his understanding is binary.
      To better understand USA, they view all discrimination as bad. So true science and statistics are viewed as evil (e.g Asian people do drive worse). Hence it is wrong to say black people are poorer. If Cloud reads your comment and starts speaking unfiltered truth, he could be cancelled be his peers. If you care for him, let him live in his country's delusion

    My favorite exchange student story was a German named Timmy in my 9th grade English class. He was a very stereotypical aryan and a bit quiet but a nice boy. One day the teacher was reading about history and mentioned something cruel the nazis did and several of the boys immediately turned to him and said things like “Aw Timmy” “come on man” “Timmyyyy”, just generally giving him shit purely because he came from the same place as them.

    whenever they build highways into the cities in the 50-60s they selected the black neighbourhoods to bulldoze to make room. so black communities getting a raw deal is not controversial to state.
    Gentrification is not a straightforward concept, and is woven tightly together with countless other financial, social and urban factors. its also often misused. its not racism, but kinda too: its about classism where a previously lower class poor neighbourhood or area gets "gentrified" or """upgraded""" to a higher class one, in the process or because of it, pricing out and displacing previous community.

    • @MrTophatcat
      @MrTophatcat 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Its also important to note that because black folks have had a lower income they've had to rent to have housing and renting prices can increase. If an area gets gentrified then the landlords can increase the price and pretty up the property so that more affluent people move in. Because there are more white wealthy people (both because there are simply more white people and because of generational wealth among other reasons) the black renters have to move out because of the increase in rent and that makes space for wealthy white people. Black folk don't get picked on "because they are black" but "because they are black" they have less resources to prevent these things from happening to them.

    8:30 "I think most people are on the side of neighborhood improvement. I mean, it's because of their house values..."
    This is the spicy opinion that will finally get Cloud canceled, not the thing about sleeping with his sister.
    11:33 If your classmates can argue their points well enough in English, then maybe they proved that they didn't need any homework. Except for the guy who hasn't brought his from last year.
    This reminds me of the story where a student reconnected with an old teacher and admitted that he cheated by studying the old exams and the teacher replying: "who do you think leaked that study guide to you?" The school's English teacher might know more than you think. Who's really fooling who?

    I think that understanding gentrification is a thing isn't racist. It's not unique to race, sure, but I would argue you're being obtuse to overlook issues surrounding gentrification.
    "Nobody can take the house from you " - local governments can increase taxes until people who live there cannot afford it anymore. You can also develop parts of a town intentionally running out the people that live there, not to develop infrastructure but just put in different zoning laws and increasing tax burden of specific areas. Waterfronts, commercial zones, and historically, areas experiencing "White flight" will do this. To take race out of the equation, you still see gentrification in areas like Washington and Oregon where the population is overwhelmingly white. But that doesn't mean that there's never a racial aspect to it.
    I think when it came to "give feedback on what I talk about during VODs" I appreciate discourse but I would want something more insightful or to talk about things you do understand over free flow thought.

      @LQN2 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@Gearshoot Aye, it's why I took the time to just put a blurb in. I don't have a desire to argue on the Internet but if someone's missing something like that there's no harm in explaining a different perspective. No reason to jump down their throat or to write a treatise, but obviously a good time to add context.

    • @MrTophatcat
      @MrTophatcat 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      its also important to note not everyone is a home owner and renters don't have control over how high their rent gets. If the landlord reasons that they can get more money by prettying up the apartments and attracting wealthier renters then they can increase rent and make more money. The renters move in to the new gentrified neighborhood, the landlord gets more money but the original black renters have to move out. Nothing (traditionally) morally wrong happened but we still see people suffer because of it.

    • @gradious7497
      @gradious7497 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I appreciate your comment and think it was totally appropriate. Not too lengthy but adds just enough context to help understand the reading assignment.
      Cloud also has a bias towards viewing stories through a contemporary lens. It's heavily implied that this story is set pre-Civil Rights Era. I can understand why high schooler Cloud has a hard time imagining local governments acting with discriminatory effect or intent because that's supposed to be a thing of the past.
      High schoolers sometimes don't understand the deeper meanings of stories. That's a normal part of education.

    Greetings from Germany here, yeah our teachers are crazy... were currently running a bingo about our teacher, like when she says one of her usual out-of-context things we cross smth off the board... examples: ''her child'' ''her horse'' ''ex-husband'' -she's our science teacher. (chemistry atm)

      We had a teacher who would say iconic sentences sucha as: "kappe ab, wir sind hier nicht in der bronx", "Flasche runter!", "Zeitzeuge, jetzt paßt mal auf."
      It was pretty easy to provoce these lines at least once per lesson.
      Needles to say we also had a large Bingo game running.

    Regarding the first half if your story. Sounds like this teacher was talking about Redlining and built on from that. Clearly didn't go about it properly if they've left such an uninformed impression. You seem to have been made more aware of the effects and consequences then its practice.

    in this epidsode of wartime bunker debrefiing...our local commander explains his first encounter with a rabid european system that no one thoughts was real,he is lost for words as not even the cannon shells cutting his base in half can compare to the shock when a very real communist man hating feminist teacher, created by a german hate for their people and masculinity, all because they overcorrect to what an austrian painter once did,Cloud learns quickly that despite his own country's shortcomings, the world of europe is already lost, the people under the thrall of politics that make them eerily close to a ruinoius union of states lead by a central comittee of oligarchs in a city that is called moscow...yet this union of statesis lead from brussels, unelected by the member countries at the very top.
