AliExpress has 4 inch long bit sets for around $5 I got a set of security torx and a set of Philips and flat bits. Thay work amazing for projects like this.

You all used permanent magnet..the rotation slow because the bearing became magnet

Usually if you take a 9v power supply and manually charge the battery to get the voltage up the smart charger will charge the pack once you get the voltage around 5v.

I would have tried to bring the cells back, one at a time with a power supply set as a 4v source limited to say 50ma until cell voltage rises past 2.5v. If it is going to come back it will only take 10 mins, then a higher current until you get to your upper cutoff - 4.1v or whatever you choose but a bit lower than the 4.2 max is best. I use an old laptop PSU with a cheap buck converter that has presets for volts (4) and constant current (50ma to begin with).

Just goes to show drilling a hole in to a flat battery does not release all the energy not stored inside it. You can see why 3M did not stick to "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company" 3M is much easer to say. 🙂 Nice fix

You can make a silicone sock or a 3d printed sock for the bottom part so it doesn’t comes apart. I had one of those lying around with dead batteries so maybe I should make this

the the little ring on the switcher leg plastic or ferrite? it does look like a ferrite bead to me. could be thee to reduce high frequency issues by adding a little bit of inductance to the lead.

You could use battery 21700 instead of 18650 -- higher capacity and will better fit the battery case size. Otherwise very nice restoration.

Mine's been intermittent for a while, sometimes starting, sometimes needing a wiggle. I suspect mine's also got a broken wire that touches only when I don't need it to work. It's great to see what I have in store for me to work on. Thanks.

Excellent video. I have an even older version of that and it was certainly NOT cheap when I bought it. It came with a combined wall mounted holder and charger. Tge build quality is so good that even after the batteries died, I kept it and I still use it when I want the extra torque I can apply due to the large, comfortable handle. I did replace the original batteries in it once, but the replacements didn’t last nearly as long as the original ones and I started using a cordless drill instead, when those died. I hadn’t thought of changing the batteries for modern ones, until I saw this. I must do that. I have converted old drills to lithium, so no idea why this never occurred to me.

You should invest in a better multimeter.

Looks like it may be worth 3D printing a new base for those. I bought 2x NiCd batteries, but forgot you can't fit them in like lithium batteries.Even 14500 batteries would fit - but, you'd get 1.5A out of it and the discharge would be too low and be condemned to low power outputs. No power tools, just lights, radio, speaker, etc.
