Full proper restoration of a Founders Pattern 7 Dresser. If you have a chance to buy Founders furniture I highly suggest you buy it. Their quality far surpasses other American MCM furniture like Broyhill, Lane, Kent Coffey, etc. These pieces had an oil finish from the factory. NEVER USE CITRISTRIP EVER AGAIN! - Wood Stripper Comparison
I’ve been thinking of using denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner on an (identical?) old Lane table … I think I’ll get some QCS, it did a great job.
@@BobSperber I would use lacquer thinner to clean it up after QCS.
Do you scuff after toning or straight to lacquer
@@tammywalla7259 never scuff or even touch toner. It's essentially dust when it sits. It should be topcoated as soon as you are done.
5F5 was the best stripper, but a few people who didn't know how to use it properly and the EPA ruined that.
@@msheart2 heard dat!
Does kleanstrip premium stripper work with water based poly?
@@Tatsunami_Studios I haven't tried. But I think it would.
What would you think having a table like this refinished by a refinisher would cost?
@@pjohnson0818 It really all depends. There's no set price among refinishers. I would guess maybe $300-$600. Also depends if you want it grain filled. That would cost more.
Hi there, I really appreciate your videos! You do exceptional work! I was wondering if I wanted to stain the table I’m working on, would you stain it, before you grain filled it? Do you need to put vinyl sealer after the stain and then grain filler? Sorry to throw a monkey wrench in the mix. lol😊
@@tammywalla7259 process goes: stain, sealer, grain fill, sealer, glaze, toner, lacquer.
@ Thank you. Thank you. That’s what I thought it was but always good to double check!
@ Do you always glaze?
@tammywalla7259 for most walnut pieces I glaze.
@@MadManRestorations I actually bought a lane coffee table that I thought was perception, as it turns out it was built in 1985 and is made out of oak. The style is the same as the one from the 60’s other than they used oak as far as I can tell. I’m going to stain it med walnut and use the same process as perception. It’s my first attempt at this process. I guess you could say it’s a practice run. Fingers crossed!
You lost me when you said you used steel wool on the last one. So you didn't compare apples to apples it seems.
@@specialks1953 I followed the directions of each product.
I didn't. The internet is a lie 🫠
Absolutely beautiful! Job well done. Than thanks for the info about this piece.
@@gaildudlicek890 thank you. I want to educate people on my channel. A lot of misinformation out there 😐
Why no gloves?
@@msSam4U prosthetic hands.
Citristrip does have a strong smell to it especially if you have a sensitive nose. It's best to use outside or garage.
Best video on TH-cam and so helpful to me. I am going to restore my rosewood table, quick question, when I stripped the varnish, is there any way to take the color out of the wood and veneer? Thanks a ton
@@feinie1279 thank you. I guess you could technically bleach the wood with a 2 part bleach kit. But I would never do that to rosewood.
Bondo? Why didn't you use wood glue or a piece of wood cut to size? Bondo is a cop-out. This in itself makes me run. Losing a subscriber because you couldn't be bothered to do it right is not a good idea. Bye!
@@RissaFirecat this is a standard practice for high level furniture refinishing. There are multiple levels missing in the substrate to fill. Unless you mean why I didn't use a piece of veneer? That's because it's pretty much impossible to find a piece of veneer with matching grain. I literally made a faux piece of veneer to match the existing wood grain.
Amazing work, you did justice to the piece. But you could be a bit more humble - i.e. the "refinishers" comment seemed a little unnecessarily lol. Good luck.
Can you use QCS on a wooden deck?
@@angelanatrin5579 what are you trying to remove?
ha, QCS is out of stock, you should put 3 links for all products
@@TheGrateful108 I don't recommend Citristrip and Klean Strip is available at box stores.
As an amateur i would have stopped at shellac or thought it was the last step. Still trying to figure out what the vinyl sealer and lacquer others do in its order.
@@Dudeyoureajoke shellac isn't durable enough for a topcoat and is the incorrect finish. I use shellac as a barrier cost in case of silicon contamination. Using vinyl sealer and lacquer together creates a very strong finish that's pretty much period correct.
Awesome wonderful job! Loved it.❤. Interested in what it would now be worth?
@@patriciacrozier7624 I forget what the dealer sold it for. But I'm guessing around $2,500. The market has definitely softened over the past 9 months or so.
I just came into possession of a Brasilia long dresser and mirror. Overall the finish is in good shape with some minor scratches on the bottom where the wood type appears to be a lighter variety. Could the same products you showed in your video work to restore minor scratches?
@@2004taco depends on what the damage is. You can always email or DM me on Instagram and I would be more than happy to help you out.
One look at the safety data sheet (SDS) for Klean Strip should make clear that safe use of the product requires far more precautions than does safe use of Citistrip. While it might not have methylene chloride, Klean Strip has other hazardous solvents. Control of the hazards, e.g., selecting and obtaining appropriate personal protective requires knowledge and experience beyond that of most people (hobbyists/DIYers). By contrast, the SDS for QCS makes it appear far less hazardous. However, today it is not available from the manufacturer (out of stock). Moreover, I could not find through other outlets, e.g., Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Menards, or Hobby Lobby.
@@puluke1953 QCS by Stripwell is literally a Mom and Pop operation.
I ruined an antique quarter sawn oak table by stripping with citristrip! it stained the wood andI couldn't remove the discoloration. I DO NOT recommend using on anything valuable.
@@bluedragonfly5 yeah, I can't find a use for Citristrip in any situation.
Love citristrip. Did an awesome job with stripping nearly 1000 sq ft hardwood floors.
Thank you for not putting music in your video. I can watch without wanting to turn the volume aaaallll the way down. And very nice work!
@@rebeccawilliams9057 😂 thanks. Noted ☺️
Lots of older furniture had shellac finishes and don't require fancy strippers. To check if it's shellac: Dab a little denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner on one section of the wood finish. Try to find an inconspicuous spot. If it is shellac finish, it will liquefy and dissolve. You know it's a lacquer finish if the test spot turns a little white in color. A result of softening without dissolving suggests there is shellac present but that it has been mixed with lacquer as well. Any other response and you're probably looking at a different wood finish. Use the over the shelf strippers for that.
@@watcherwatchmen7785 antiques may have shellac on them. Starting around the 1930s most furniture had a lacquer finish.
Gorgeous and my favorite piece .
@@wandamcgiboney5141 thanks for watching 😊

Any recommendations to fix uneven wood darkening after citristrip?
@@kimberlyh3468 you can't try using another stripper. Then try lacquer thinner or acetone. Last resort is to hand sand with 150 grit.
Unfortunately, qcs is exponentially more expensive than the other two!! $35 for 2 8oz bottles is ridiculous.
@@creativendeavor I have a $1,000 and $1,000 sander. Prices are relative. It's a Mom and Pop company and literally the only product like this available.

@@TrentTomas-b6p nice! Glad you like it! 👍
How do you fix a blotchy strip after using citristrip? I just found this video. I already stripped twice with citristrip and there's a few areas that where left blotchy and some of the old laquer still on. This is a 100 old chair that I bought on an estate sale very solid but with a very deteriorated finish. Must of the finish came out nicely after citristrip, mineral spirits with wire wool, and washing with a little water with dish soap. After letting it dry in the hot sun of a summer in Texas I noticed that there's still old finish attached, and a very blotchy backrest. I applied the stripper again and it didn't do anything more. How can I fix the blotchiness left by the stripper?
@@lmgorbea1 don't use soap. You can strip with another stripper. A lot of chairs are solid wood. If that's the case you can just sand it out.
@@MadManRestorationsthanks. I'll try that to see if it works.
I gotta say that reading the labels on all strippers, including Cirtistrip, and they ALL read the same. They ALL recommend wearing PPE including respirators (not dust masks) and from what I can tell, have pretty much the same VOC. The MSDS for QCS is quite impressive compared to the others, but it's price is no joke.
@@justadbeer Stripwell is literally a mom and pop set up. After using QCS for a while it's my main stripper. It saves time which in turn saves money.
The cocktail table looks great. Love the comments at the end about oils and polyurethane!
@@Finish-IT- thanks! 😊
I so appreciate the depth of of your knowledge and commitment. Those Mohawk products are amazing, too.
@@colleenmccarthy-evans3149 thank you. They are commercial grade products but very user friendly.
You mentioned that the sealant does not need to use HVLP sprayer because it comes in cans, but can you brush that same combination on? or does it need to be sprayed in some manner?
@@weeberz1 they come in ready to use spray cans. No mixing involved. Companies make brush on lacquer but it's garbage. Lacquer needs to be sprayed.
This is a beautiful piece and you did a fabulous job.
@@JanetteStubelt thank you 😊
Can I use QCS on refinishing a wood front door without taking it off the hinges?
