Australian Kangaroo Stamps & More
Today we look at some Australian Kangaroo and Map stamps, I share some stamps that some viewers sent me, and I look for some chalk surfaced Wildings using a digital microscope that BangGood sent me.
BangGood reached out to ask me to review their new digital microscope. I told them I wouldn’t feature the microscope if I didn’t like it. Obvious spoiler, I liked it. Full disclosure, they gave me the microscope for free, whether I liked it or not, but I had the option of telling them I didn’t like it and not sharing it with you. If this kind of thing comes up in the future, I will generally not share things with you that I don’t think some of you will get value from.
I hope this episode didn’t feel like an ad. I hate ad breaks and sponsorships in the middle of videos, and I don’t want to do that to you. That’s not what this channel’s about.
Oh, and for a short time, BangGood is offering you a 25% off discount code. Here are the details:

    Ken, chalky paper for the Wildings can be difficult. I collect mint which makes it easier. Usually the printing is a bit sharper, the color a bit brighter. As a reference, if you can get a booklet pane of 4, either 4 x 2 1/2 or 3 x 1/2 d + 1 x 2 1/2 d. These are all chalky. The watermark on the chalky paper is also very difficult to see The multi-crown issue comes in creamy, whiter and chalky paper. The latter appears to me to be typically more opaque than the regular whiter issue..

    I considered green stamps and other of the savings stamps by companies and not the post office collectible as such. when my mother passed i threw away a box full of s&h stamps and books. telegraph stamps are collectible in most countries since there were produced by post office for use as well as stamps for trains. i have saved the souvenir sheet envelopes. I saved them with the sheets in my album. same with booklet panes. i still have all the year sets until the early 2000's but the newer years sets are more for the books themselves than the stamps. Have been buying the yr sets without the books when possible

    I bought some stock books of Wildings and Machins and was lucky that the previous owner had catalogued and put tabs next to the different types, variations ,and wtrmrks showing the differences. There were some with upside down wtrmrks and bar variations listed in these stock books. there were a few of the chalky paper varieties as well. I had to go back and check to see of course. One stock book was full of the earlier Victoria ,E,GV varieties and chalky papers. some are hard to discriminate

    Hi Ken! This was a varied and interesting video and I enjoyed it. Thanks! I also love the map and kangaroo stamps. I also think it show cases the slightly defiant? and quirky nature of the Australians. Hope I am not selling them short, now. I enjoyed to see the demonstration of the microscope. What is its maximum enlargement? Did you capture an image of an entire stamp, and how does it compare with a scan of a stamp at e.g. 600 dpi? This might not be such a straight forward comparison. Do you think one could use the microscope with ease to search for errors etc. on stamps?

    • @KensStampCollection

      Haha. I suppose you would have more insight into Aussie stereotypes. To me they seem like Americans with better beaches.

      @KensStampCollection 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The scope won’t capture a whole stamp. Just about a third of the roo. I didn’t get a sense of the photo resolution. I’m not sure there. It def won’t replace a scanner. I’m sure it would be excellent for finding errors

    • @KensStampCollection
      @KensStampCollection 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As for enlargement. I’m learning that’s a hard question. The spec says it’s 5x-120x. Here’s what I measure. The 8.5cm screen height shows 8.5mm of a ruler fully zoomed out. The closest I could measure the same rule was just over 1mm.

    • @GreatStampAdventure
      @GreatStampAdventure 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@KensStampCollection I know little about the Australians, only on TV and some colleagues in my research. I find they have a lot of self confidence, but one has to be so careful for stereotypes. 🙂 I don't think they are like stereotype ("typical") Americans, though. 🙂

    • @GreatStampAdventure
      @GreatStampAdventure 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@KensStampCollection Thanks for replying, Ken. As far as I can gather, the field size of the microscope is not very large. I think if you seek a known error, seeing part of the stamp significantly enlarged is fine, but in my mind so far, without experience, I think trying to find new, unknown errors, one will have to compare two or more stamps next to each other to compare them. I don't think the microscope will be the optimal option. But I am just thinking in theory - will need to start to seek and identify variants of stamps for experience.

  • @joannewolfe5688

    To me, the first 6 stamps looked MUCH sharper than the block of 8. It appears there are different types of paper between the two, even if one is not chalky paper; I'm going to speculate that the fibrous paper simply has more "rag" in it -- whether that might be cotton fiber or some other type of plant fiber. I'm curious how you find stamps for your collection. Do you buy lots from dealers, albums off eBay, or? I bought a killer old British Lincoln stamp album off eBay before they started selling for astronomical prices and got a whole set of the "Roos." Unlike most of the old albums, the owner of this one had taste, discrimination, and clearly some knowledge about valuable stamps. It's been a treat to go through.

    • @KensStampCollection
      @KensStampCollection 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sounds like a fun collection. I tend to buy lots and old albums. I get a lot of duplicates but I enjoy the treasure hunting of it. Rag paper makes sense, but that’s not an official type. Paper variants are all over the place with GB stamps. I thought if anything the rag paper was sharper but not so much as with the chalky paper

I think there are only three of these that are troublesome. The 1p Crimson, the 2p Myrtle Green and the 10p Orange Brown. I also suspect, but haven't confirmed, that for the paper variety, the phosphorescent effect happens on the back of the stamp as well. Did you need help with how to see phosphoresces?

    Thanks Ken for yet another really informative upload. I couldn't agree with you more about the issues arising from subjectivity in this area of stamp identification, and listening to your calm, thorough, personal investigations certainly makes me feel a lot less frustrated! An area I have particularly struggled with over the years is with the identification of chalky paper. My collection is primarily GB and the Commonwealth, and so many issues (particularly KGVI) seem to have been printed on both 'ordinary' and 'chalky' paper. I'm reluctant to use the old-fashioned 'silver' test to check the paper type - have you made any videos in this area yourself as I'm sure they'd be very helpful!

    I like and collect this series, but I rely on the pared down Scott catalog... I find the range of colors and papers too arbitrary to concentrate on... and any individual stamp might not be the exact shade with which it was printed. I enjoy collecting these more on postcards and by postmark. I will add that I appreciate your effort and dedication... you are well on your way to writing a paper on these; dated stamps and examples on cover would be of use.

    Wow!!! That really makes me want to go through my duplicates, and also re-check the stamps that are already in my Scott album. That album doesn’t have spots for all the variations, but at least I could make notes of what is in there. I don’t think there is enough time or aspirin in the world for me to manage the color/ paper varieties like you have. What an amazing gift from John and thank you again for sharing your knowledge 🤗. I always learn so much 😊🎉

    you need to identify which ones are worth big bucks..

      I think I've identified the most valuable ones. Still, nothing in this set is really big bucks. Nobody's retiring off these stamps.

    I have a folder that was issued in 1936: Prince, King-Emperor, Duke all-in the same year. It includes 15 stamps and the envelope it came in. Is this of any value? and where should I go to sell it. This came from my grandmother’s collection. I am 70 years old and neither of my children are interested in stamp collection. Thank you for any help you can give me. Karen M. Davis

      Stamps from that era are usually not too valuable. I'd suggest you look on eBay under sold items and see what others have sold it for. My guess would be about $10-$50, but it's just a guess.

    I'm enjoying learning from your videos, Ken. I'm getting back into stamp collecting after a hiatus of many, many years. The German cursive writing on those post cards will be a fun challenge to translate. You could google "Kurrent" (Deutsche Kurrentschrift) to see how the letters are formed. I've done some translating of German cursive and, though difficult (for me), I find it to be a fun activity. I very much look forward to future videos from you!

      I'm sorry for your loss. What limited information I can share about selling a collection, I've put in my blog here: kensstampcollection.blogspot.com/2023/09/kens-advice-on-selling-stamp-collection.html, But you asked about getting them to a good home. In Massachusetts, there is a postal museum, the Spellman Museum of Postal History. If you contact them, they take donations which I'm sure will count as a charitable donation. If that's too far, there may be other stamp museums closer to you who would also be a good home.
