Forging A Fuller Or Maybe A top Swage?
Really beautiful and very well done, those copper rivets really set it off!
Thanks! I like the contrast it gives.
'Honey-do project', I'll get a bit of mileage out of that one lol. Thank you for the vid, I think my next project will be making an edging tool, looks really well.
Thank you I'm glad you like it.
Well done!
Thank you!
Inspiring video! Definitely a good job. Useful tips.
Thank you!
nice job! i do shelves as well. I need to look and see if you've made a video on making that grooving stamp. I'd like to make one myself.
I made the video on that tool a few videos ago its a pretty quick project!
@solidsteelironworks I'll look for it. Thanks!
..Good design and look Lee. i hope they don't get covered up by curtains...
Hahah the wife has already hidden it behind the curtains unfortunately.
Great stuff! 👍
Thanks!
Beautiful work and great visuals and so great hammer work.Yes great video to learn from. Thanks
Thank you very much!
Love it. I just got the book hooked from abana, can't wait to try some new things.
Thank you
This piece looks very good. The only thing I don´t like are the modern screws. I think rivets would have been better here. Old style screws would also look good, maybe with slotted halfround heads and square nuts.
Looks great 👍
Great job. I like it way better than using 1 piece.
Great job can you press thin metal whit that ?
Yes I would think if I made a top die it would be pretty easy.
I really like the idea of a rivet head blending into that pattern. Nice work, thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you!
I like it. I've been messing around with casting. I there's a thing that i'm trying to make quantity of i've been struggling with all the different casting ways. I tried making an open mold with refractory and that didn't work, but uh, thank you, this is going to work just fine.
Great job Lee. thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
This is a rad project! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like it!
gives me some ideas myself
Why do you double tap your blows? Seems to me that could make the tool jump off point….. I got my butt chewed for that in the early stages of my apprenticeship. Wonderful video!!
Its a bad habit some days I'm better than others, I'll break the habit one day.
Beau travail! Le moule est-il en acier carbone?
I believe it is a mild steel so very low carbon content.
..Nice job Lee. i had to weld a shank on the couple i made. my anvil is crowned and it wanted to fly off...
I should add one as well, once I use up the extra space on the die with another design I'll probably weld one on to save some headache lol
Question ;! What is a choice of high carbon steel and I'm in a small Blacksmith shop using parks 50 oil.and have 01 and 9022 on hand here. Thanks that will work for leather also.
To be honest I've never worked with either so I'm not sure which is a better choice.
Pretty cool. I think if it was made a bit smaller and put on the end of a punch for a pneumatic rivet gun, it'd be pretty cool to make some nice rosette style rivets for forging decorative work.
Awesome job man I really enjoyed your video 👍🏻👍🏻
thats a great multi purpose tool . I like the "rough" look , it really shows how it was hand made. hope to see you using it in the shop.
Thank you!
Good design love the other end for straightening scrolls etc. Well done.
Thank you!
Very nice, think I might copy that. I love the tool at the other end, will be really handy.
Glad you like it
Nice!
Nice Work! I also like the riveted in pegs, they look good even if that wasn't the plan! I wanted to comment since you mentioned at the end that you couldn't weld in your forge. You should be able to!! I have done a number of welds in my propane forge. I can recommend trying with iron mountain flux. It has some mild steel or pure iron in it that melts a little lower and helps the welds stick initially. I have made a few tongs with welded reigns and some san mai knives. Admittedly success rate is low with the knives. But it is a fun way to make some heavy duty tongs without a bunch of forging. I would say get some flux and give it a try!! the flux does kinda make a mess in the forge as a heads up!
I'll try that thanks!!
Nice video. Nice work sir
Thank you!
I like the look of the cross-rivets in there, I think it really adds to it. Nice job!
Thank you very much!
..it works, that's what matters...
Nice, maybe think about necking down the pins and bevelling the pin holes in the top side of handle. Then if you insert the pins like rivets, you can peen the tops down level with the handle and they won’t come out. Would still be a lot less work than forging from one piece.
Thats a good idea thank you!
You could put the pins in without heads and bend them closer/further apart for a double bending wrench🙂
I like how this turned out. I also appreciate you sharing your process and respect the way you kept going after your first idea didn't work. I think I will try to make this also but maybe just duplicate what you did with the straight end and then bend it over to make the large bending side.
i dig it
You could have wrapped some copper wire around the posts of the prongs and fluxed it. The copper would melt and flow nicely into the seams and it'll give you a decently strong braze joint. That braze work can, of course, be done in the forge.
cool bit of kit, I like the cross rivet to fix the shrink fit problem' I actually like the look of that better than the shrink fit, and when you can use both ends of a tool why waste metal...make it a double whammy. Good stuff thanks for sharing
Looks to me like it'll work! I especially like that open wrench like end...that seems so practical. Wish I had thought of that!
Nice and quiet good From Bunga Cabucgayan Biliran phiillipines
Wpuldnt the world be so much easier if every rivet was the same length and width? Lol
Good work on this poker. We shared this video on our homemade tool forum last week.
Well, your skills are beyond mine at present. You did a great job with your poker, and I learned quite a bit. Thank you. Question: how DO you keep your hands so clean? Working with coal, my hands skin creases are ingrained black. Help?
I use gas so thats a big factor in clean hands and I always keep my left hand gloved also.
@@solidsteelironworks yes, the leather gloved bit has been recommended to me, but I have grown fond of the safety of feeling the heat in a non obvious hot piece, and then acting accordingly. Doing punch work with a punch in too close a proximity to the hot stuff is painful, I'll admit. At our shop, there is so much dust from the 4 coal forges, that everything is caked from it. I hear that rubbing hand cream into a clean hand before a session will help, but I hate the sticky/slippery feeling of that. Hmmm.
The finger grip reminds me of the trigger guards of old wheellock pistols.
That collar's amazing, I'm surprised it's your first attempt. And anyone looking at the end result would never know it strayed from your original intent. I think it looks fantastic, you did a great job!
Thank you!
Excellent save on the handle! For me, when the steel refuses to do what I want it to and seems to have a mind of its own, I often end up with a better result, which I think you did here. Thanks for sharing your process.
brilliant buddy such skill
Thank You!
I know you made a change to the loop due to the crack that developed but I really like how it ended up and I may try to do that on purpose on a project I am working on. I really like the finished look of it.
Great outcome!
Thank you!
