Do it over RF!
Dual Watch vs Dual Receive?
Only one receiver on your rig? Try "Dual Watch" to monitor two channels at the same time. While not true dual-receive, you can use it to keep your radio on APRS-packet, while regularly checking the local voice repeater every couple of seconds. Just to be safe, when doing lots of APRS messaging, turn off dual watch to be sure you're not sending packets to the Repeater -- don't be that guy.

Luv your channel. I’ve learned quite a bit from you.. Just kind of curious. When I was 19 years old, 1989. I had a boom box in my car. I still have all the parts 400 Watt amp 2 = 12 inch subwoofers face plate stereo and 2 = 6x9’s 200 W each. With 200 W amp.. Now! Want all this. In a man cave.. What power supply can I
Lol. Yeah HRO. Im about to be broke with a PW2 for my daughters soon. Be careful what you promise to get extra out of them. I think Ramen is the next step down from hot dogs. How do you see the messages on your 100?

@KM6LYW, thanks for your help. I finally got it working. 73’s WD4ITE

Good luck with that ! Let me know how that works out.
@@KM6LYW Works out fine. I don't need a new radio after buying one in December.
Props for the Metal Gear sound effect
the dual watch is a great feature that monitors 2 bands / channels jumping from one to the other while having 2 receivers is a whole other world, the convenience of a full duplex cross band or satellite traffic with uplink and downlink in the same radio ... I argued with many friends because they said they had "dual band" radios when they were "duo band" and then when we did the tests they understood the real difference and additional convenience ... my old and trusty tmd700 one side is active in aprs and the other in 70cm for local traffic ... in the car the same, an old but excellent thd7 as aprs tracker and the other band for chatter on repeaters!!! 73 by iz3qvb
Oh, right "dual band" is a third thing to confuse with dual watch vs dual receive - great point!
The FTM-100 is a great radio!! I’m trying to figure out how to set my home frequency as my local repeater. When u have the Dual Watch on, it goes to the home frequency and it come up as 144.000
Yah, not obvious right? To set your home channel, configure a repeater, then hold down "M/W" (memory write) button, then scroll to memory "zero" aka, "home", then long-press display (enter), select OK to Overwrite.
I really need a video for a Pi3, digirig, GPS and a UV5R. Have all the equipment and cables, but this thing won’t key up and transmit!
DigiPi 1.9-2 supports DigiRig Mobile out-of-the-box, select it on the Initialize page. The DigiRig "Lite" however, is not yet supported, but can be made to work by editing a couple files.

You make alot of good points, but you also overegg it a bit. You're running the risk of putting people off completely. You generally learn etiquette by listening.
I bet your just a bunch of fun to chat with. I’ll say whatever I want. This isn’t communist North Korea. Damn some of y’all need to lighten up

Sad Hams are adorable. The only thing you need to remember is to turn on your Roger beep.
Awesome video I ordered the parts🎉
Can you power on/off the radio from the mic? or do I have to get out of my car, open the trunk and power it on/off or have to pull my cellphone out of my pocket for that?
the HT app and the little yellow walkie talkie can turn off your radio. it also has auto-power-off timeout. Otherwise, walk to the trunk :)

I have poor impulse control. see the movie "Office Space" - great stuff
You may be repeating bumper music - but that’s what we love about classic rock - you can listen to the same thing over and over again and it’s still great! Nice work! BTW - is that an Android dev emulator you’re running or are you taking remote control of one of your Android devices?
I'm using scrcpy on Linux which allows me to see/use my android tablet connected with usb-debugging enabled. kinda cool
I'm struggling with the offline maps
Send me an email, found on QRZ, NA7Q. Happy to help out with that issue.
@@mikeph4 Can you share it here Mike? Your instructions tell us to click on "grant file permissions" but that isn't seen on the client, and aprsdroidOSM can't access the files?
@@KM6LYW Since your video I made an update that made it easier and more standardized to grant permissions. The permissions previously were done when going to the system settings and searching for hidden permissions menus within Android. With the new update you don't need to do that (hopefully). I tested it on 3 devices with old and newer Android and it worked great. I also added a file picker for selecting the maps. So the whole process is greatly simplified. Let me know if this works or doesn't.
@@mikeph4 yes thank you. It works perfectly now. offline maps! I used the file picker, just selected the maps file from aprsdroid, then I pressed 'grant permissions' from within aprsdroid.
Needs more cowbell!
still need an easy way to auto update the sd card img so it doesn't have to be accessed directly
I have been waiting for years for this on APRS Droid. Hurray!!!
What else would you like to see?
@mikeph4 It will be great once the Bluetooth LE option is fully developed. Some sort of built-in map would be nice. When I open the app it won't pull any maps from the Internet. I understand maps can be downloaded though. In general APRSDroid's interface is a bit cumbersome. But I'm sure changing that would take a ton of work. I'm just happy someone is finally continuing development of the app.
@@JimBrock-y1jthere is a built in map. If it doesn't work it's because you tried to use Google maps, which I can't provide publicly due to cost. But OSM is free. You can use the online version. Or ANY map type for offline. I will be adding more online mapping down the road. As well as making it easier to pick and choose your offline maps. The layout I would say is feature filled, but not at all cumbersome. Send me an email, NA7Q
@@JimBrock-y1j Apparently my previous comment got deleted. You can use online OSM maps by literally just switching the map viewer to OSM maps from the eye icon at the top. And making sure offline mode isn't toggled in the app preferences. what about the interface is "cumbersome"? It's a feature filled app for APRS to say the least. It's not cumbersome or overly complex like APRSIS32 on windows.
I'm old, but I don't fear the reaper.

Is there a log file that is stored on the Pi so I can take a historic look at the activity that has been processed via my iGate? if so, how do I look at it?
"direwolf.log" lists all the activity, however, it resets each time you run direwolf. if you use ">>" instead of ">", it will append to the log, instead of overwrite.
any idea why my amp will not key when the 7300 is in usb-d mode?
Hi, this is very interesting information. I am a ham operator from Bulgaria. I have enjoyed radio and networking from a very young age, and I am curious about what would happen if you tried to play a video, a song, or even connect to a non-encrypted Minecraft server. 😂 Would it get overloaded? Also does digipi software include built in wifi hotspot?
No, I wouldn't even try on VHF (144Mhz) which is supporting 1200baud. Maybe at 9600baud, which is the logical limit. it might take hours to transfer a song.
Interesting so it’s quite slow technology is there a way to speed it up to get let’s say 1 megabit per second otherwise this could be practical for off the grid networking for basic information
@@alekzandermaniku4630 No, it's a function of the frequency. Lower frequencies go 100 miles, but the bandwidth is 1200baud. High frequences go across a house, and the bandwidth is 1 billion baud.
@@craig9309 how high frequencies give more speed and is there a balance between distance and speed?
Nice video. Thanks for putting this together. I'll be putting it to use.
I know this is a technical hobby...BUT...this is a bit nerdy and quickly kills any interest in this mode...IMHO.
Curious, and have been trying to figure it out for a few days now with no luck so hopefully there is an easier answer if I ask. To start LOVE this and appreciate all the work you all have done and makes life nice that I can run WSJT-x from my couch upstairs while spending time with my wife rather than in front of my rig. But the question, is it possible to connect to FLRig over a local network and not just on local host (127.0.0.1:12345)? Would love to point a wsjt-x on my Mac to the digirig running FLRig on a port, but am so far failing. Thanks to anyone who may have info and not be as new to this as I am...
Possibly? or via rigctld, both are network-controlled. the question is how you'd get audio?
The Pi loses network/WiFi connectivity whenever I plug in the small screen, any ideas on why this may be happening? WiFi works perfectly without the screen plugged in.
That's a new one to me. Is the pi sitting on a static bag or conductive surface?
@@KM6LYW It's on my workbench where I do all my radio stuff. I might send the screen back and get a replacement, maybe it's an issue of bad hardware. Frustrating for sure...
@@Dennis-tf2cs Yah, sounds lame. you can always hardware with ethernet too. they make little ethernet dongles, etc
