Florida Beaches to the Bering Sea
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 ต.ค. 2012
Travel with me to remote areas of Alaska as I retrace my grandfathers WWII footsteps through one of the most spectacular regions on the planet, the Aleutian Islands.
The isolated Aleutian Island chain is a part of the world that is equally as unforgiving as it is awe inspiring. Despite that, in 1942, the war arrived in Alaska. What ensued was a mostly forgotten yet brutal year long battle to get the islands back from the Japanese, a conflict that is often overlooked in American history. It is called the Aleutian Campaign
Follow me as I move away from my comfy Florida beach lifestyle on a mission to follow my grandfather’s aviation footsteps through this breathtaking yet unpredictably harsh landscape still littered with remnants of its turbulent past. Let this channel serve to honor and remember those who served along side him in one of the most isolated and preserved wartime locations still in existence.

What the storm did to my Florida Island home.
มุมมอง 1983 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hurricane Debby made land fall on Anna Maria Island the morning of August 4th, 2024 but for us, it was just a tropical storm. The system itself was over 100 miles west of the islands but still delivered roughly 14 inches of rain in a 24 hour period inundating the drainage system on the island. Streets were flooded like never before. After the bulk of the storm and storm surge threat had passed,...

On a remote Island along the Aleutian chain sits the lone crash site of a WWII era (1940s) P-61 Northrop P-61 Black Widow. The B-29 Superfortress is one of the most iconic WWII era bombers of all time. Known mostly for carrying the atomic bomb, the B-29 also played an important role in developing a reliable navigation method making polar air travel possible. There are currently only TWO B-29s still flying. And I had the privilege of flying on one of them. Ride with me on B-29 Doc as we talk about the role of B-29s ...

Miss Adak. Worked exchange office
Absolutely love your videos and would love a link to your book. I was stationed at Elmendorf for three years and was TDY several times to Adak. Lots of fond memories.
If you think THAT was fun, you should have landed at the old airstrip (right next to a mountain) before they built the newer one that you landed at!
During the cold war, the primary purpose was the Navfac, which housed the SOSUS cable termination and analysis. for detecting and tracking Soviet submarines. The P3 VP wing took the search to localize the contacts. If necessary to drop a nuclear depth bomb. Very serious stuff. I was an electronics tech at the Navfac for my year on the rock 74. The fallout shelters were a real joke, as the Hydrogen Bomb that would hit the island would leave nothing but a huge crater where the island used to exist.
Aww
you are lucky, pilot did the most complex approach, also he grazed the whole eastern shoreline of the bay. nice. also easy to see whY the clouds are dangerous there and pose a challenge for flying. btw those huge amount of wares, containers near the airport, are those all crab and culinary fish?
Once enough money gets interested in it all noble talk about monuments will quiet and the machine gets recovered. That's how it always happens.
my dad had a widgeon back in the 60's i had the pleasure of flying it from the right seat.
11:45 Naknek, Alaska and King Salmon, Alaska are two different communities. They are connected by road, but yes, the main big airport is at King Salmon.
Great video. I went to WWII Weekend and saw the Mid-Atlantic Air Museums P-61B-1 this past June. The plane was brought to the museum in 1989. Progress has been slow but the aircraft is looking good and they hope to have her airworthy in just a few more years. I've been donating to the project for 35 years now and hope I live to see this beast fly.
Having this wreck site historically preserved was genius!!! Nice work, EVERYbody!
Was with Marine Barracks 84/85 on Adak, you may leave Adak, but Adak never leaves you.
Those who tell the stories rule the world. Native Indian saying.
SERVED IN VP-6 ON ADAK 1966.
Your happiness is contagious!
Thank you! It was a trip to smile about for sure. Unreal.
I was stationed there and worked in both fire depts. Main base and NSGA (which was called CommSta at the time) 1/76-12/76. I forgot about these shelters. I was only out there once and I don't remember why my company drove out there. I was given a TS clearance. All the guys in my fire company had one. We were firefighters but we were charged with escorting any nuclear weapons to and from the tarmac to the 7 doors of Doom Armory, always in the middle of the night so the Russian Satellites couldn't watch. We were charged with being the portable NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) decontamination team in the event of an accident during movement. There were 2 5-man teams we were Fire Company 3, a team for each shift. I have a picture of the crew in our Zinc-impregnated suits and gas masks after a training session. I was just a 20-year-old kid then and never thought about the amount of destruction these weapons could cause that we worked around then. It happened about once a month. In my debrief when I was leaving the Rock as we called it I was told none of what I saw or did existed or happened and if anyone asked what I did there to say I was just a firefighter. Adak had a lot of secrets that even some of the residents didn't know about. If I remember you had to have a Secret clearance just to get on the Rock but I'm not sure of that.
Wow- fantastic comment! I am headed to Adak at the end of August. I want to do a story on the 7 Doors of Doom and a few other sites around 'The Rock.' I would love to see that photo of you in your zinc impregnated suits! Anything specifically you'd like to see? And right... youth ignorance, perhaps they relied on that?!
@@FloridaBeachesToTheBeringSea I sent some pics of Adak to you with messenger and yes the pic of me and the crew in the zinc-impregnated suits 😂😂. If you could get into the fire station out at NSGA, I'd love to see it. It was built long after I left Both fire stations that I worked in are gone FS #1 was just past the High School. That is gone and so is the crash station by the Control tower is gone, and the original FS #2 that was at NSGA close to the water is gone too. Finger Bay has a lot of history that seems to be overlooked. So that's about it. Have fun and safe travels. Can't wait to see your next video.
Thank you for posting this video. Most interesting.
Recover and restore if possible. No doubt about it. Better to preserve history than let it rot and all these planes need to be recovered. Increase theyre numbers. I'm sure somebody out there or some Organization Could come up with the money. I mean, they got that p-38 out of a glacier tomb years ago. Id think people could manage this
Another great video. Have fun in Adak. Alaska Rocks!
It sure does!
That’s what we called Kodiak. The Rock.
@@AX01Adventures I think they also called Shemya 'The Rock" and Adak!

So good to see you at OSH! Looking forward to seeing you at the 18th FS reunion and so is the Dakota Territory Air Museum! They are so excited to have you.
Worked in the ops building you showed near the end of this video in 84-85. It was surrounded by the wullenweber or "elephant cage" as we called it.
I would have loved to have seen that in tact. The outline looked massive.
It would be kind of hard to rebuild. It’s not all there, but it is cool.👍👍
Nice places. Greetings from Paraguay
Hola! Hablo español también!
Doesn't look all that hard to me.
was there in 90-91. One of my Collateral Duty Assignments was as CNBW Officer for the intermediate level maintenance unit there. Never knew about these shelters. Had monthly training sessions with personnel on how to don 15 year old gear and go out and take Gieger readings with equipment that was past it's calibration date. Put in requisitions for new gear. Denied. Put in requisitions for calibration. Denied. Have a lot of ill feelings towards the command structure at the time. Glad to not be there and to know I will never have to go back.
So interesting. Perhaps by that time they already knew Adak was on the way out... Sounds like it was a difficult time to be there. You can see how hastily it was abandoned and closed when you walk around there. I am headed back there in a few weeks. Let me know if there is something you want to me to explore.
Probably the same gear we had when I was there in 1976.🤣I think the stuff we were using was from the late 60s.
Tough question. Recovery for what purpose? My first thought is to leave it in place as a reminder and memorial to those folks and times of WWII. My only concern with leaving it in place would be dealing with the scavengers and vandals.
It is a tough question. Scavengers have picked apart many a wreck along the chain to sell their parts and in some cases to bring back to life another aircraft. Some people just for souvenirs. I am always torn on this subject.
There's a runway, pilots will land there 😂. Not a standard approach, yeah, but any pilot with a good amount of seat time could do it I think.
If there is enough tourism or potential tourist interest in the Island, the wreck site could become covered and what is left preserved in situ. How much of the Airbase buildings are left?
Made of Aluminium shell be there for many more years.
Incrível! Muito interessante!🌟
Very interesting 👍
Rescue and restore it
Way Cool Karen !!
Let’s hope we can get Beyond … living in the past 😢 o yea and stop killing each other!
No.
Better to be saved than scoured
MAAMs p-61 slowly getting there. Saw it 10 days ago
Engines would be good for parts. Nothing left of the plane would worth salvaging otherwise
Greetings from Thailand! "Is there enough to be recovered?" Ummm... it appears someone else has already done that. LOL that carcass has been stripped cleaner than a Thanksgiving turkey at our house growing up as a military brat! Haha!
It's a historical marker I would say. Definitely not a candidate for restoration.
It is. And the WWII base at Umnak is part of the Aleutian WWII National Historic area so not likely it can be removed easily.
It is not a loved aeroplane, it was obsolete on entering service having been designed around a specification for an early much bigger and heavier radar than was available when it was being introduced.
Not loved by who? The pilots? Brass? Aviation enthusiasts? Still rare. I think it is neat.
Really this is kids crap. Easy. Try flying around the rat city (NY and jersey cesspool newark area in a small aircraft only a handful of nuts can do that and magical if they survive.
Has adventure written on the petina . .
sadly there doesnt appear to be much there left to save. shame seeing it rust away like that.
It really is, long and forgotten about. There is so much stuff out there like this. Thanks for the comment!
At this point in time its better to leave these wreaks be. Most of them are war graves and the materials are so far gone they wouldn’t be useful anyway. Leave these to rest.
Some of those parts might keep other P-61s in the air, but there's not enough of the aircraft's skeleton left to rebuild it
