LOVE Adak. You definitely should go. No place like it. Let me know if you have questions on how to get there.. maybe that would be a good video idea! Thanks for the comment!
Had the fantastic opportunity to work on ADEK 3 summers 2016-2018. Had a friend who was stationed there and was able to provide guided tours. I dont know if you were in a denomination/wash facility or ?. My bet it was a denomination station, but at any case the one thing I was impressed by were these stations. walked through them and still gives me goosebumps when I think about what was going on there. Adak-Definitely the most beautiful place I have the honor of touring/exploring in my life.
Very cool. Lots of creepy places there among the most spectacular beauty. It is a special place indeed. You are lucky you got to work there. I was also there briefly in 2016, 2017 and 2018!
was there in 90-91. One of my Collateral Duty Assignments was as CNBW Officer for the intermediate level maintenance unit there. Never knew about these shelters. Had monthly training sessions with personnel on how to don 15 year old gear and go out and take Gieger readings with equipment that was past it's calibration date. Put in requisitions for new gear. Denied. Put in requisitions for calibration. Denied. Have a lot of ill feelings towards the command structure at the time. Glad to not be there and to know I will never have to go back.
So interesting. Perhaps by that time they already knew Adak was on the way out... Sounds like it was a difficult time to be there. You can see how hastily it was abandoned and closed when you walk around there. I am headed back there in a few weeks. Let me know if there is something you want to me to explore.
I was Deployed Adak 13 Months. Out of 395 days being stationed there The SUN ☀️ Only Shined One ☝️ day !!!!! And Captain 👨✈️ Brown of The base NSGA Called SUNSHINE ☀️ LIBERTY and We all got the Rest of the Day Off of Work.
Thanks for sharing Video were I lived my whole last teenage year on an island 735 miles from Russia 🇷🇺 that most Americans 🇺🇸 don’t even know Exist or Existed !!! With China 🇨🇳 and Russia 🇷🇺 Attacking Up 🆙 Adak’s Naval Base Needs to Reopen for Security and To Save The Town.
I think Adak was a place you either loved remoteness or hated because of the remoteness. The same was true for WWII veterans from the Aleutian Campaign. Some remember it fondly and others want to forget it. I personally LOVE it! One of the most spectacular regions on the planet.
I lived on Adak 1968-1973. Attended Adak Regional High School. I was in the play The Sound of Music: many good memories. My dad was a fire chief and my brother graduated there. I would love to visit during the summer and watch the salmon fun in the finger bay streams.
Interesting to watch this thank you. My father worked civil service so we were there from 1954 until July 28, 1968. I would have been a high school junior in the fall. Basically Adak is where I grew up. Being a kid these shelters were not something we really knew about or cared about. A close friend who shared a duplex with us for a number of years helped shut the island down when the military moved out. There are a number of us who really want to visit Adak again soon as we aren't getting any younger. It sounds like you might have good info if we decide to make the trip. Are you planning your next trip?
Wow- that is a long time to be on Adak but very cool, there must be some great stories. We had a gentlemen on our 2017 WWII history expedition who was born on Adak in the 50s. We took him back to his house (duplex) recreating a photo he had of his mom holding him in the back yard. I really enjoyed that. I would love to help you organize a trip! I am aiming to return this fall, likely August. Would that be too soon to get a group together?
I luv This Video seeing where I would’ve lived if a Nuclear ☢️ Attack from Russia 🇷🇺 while I was Stationed on Adak (NSGA). First Time I watched Ran Chills down My Spine !!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸 Hope you Go back to Adak Soon !!! 🔜 Thanks ☺️ For this Video
I was stationed there and worked in both fire depts. Main base and NSGA (which was called CommSta at the time) 1/76-12/76. I forgot about these shelters. I was only out there once and I don't remember why my company drove out there. I was given a TS clearance. All the guys in my fire company had one. We were firefighters but we were charged with escorting any nuclear weapons to and from the tarmac to the 7 doors of Doom Armory, always in the middle of the night so the Russian Satellites couldn't watch. We were charged with being the portable NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) decontamination team in the event of an accident during movement. There were 2 5-man teams we were Fire Company 3, a team for each shift. I have a picture of the crew in our Zinc-impregnated suits and gas masks after a training session. I was just a 20-year-old kid then and never thought about the amount of destruction these weapons could cause that we worked around then. It happened about once a month. In my debrief when I was leaving the Rock as we called it I was told none of what I saw or did existed or happened and if anyone asked what I did there to say I was just a firefighter. Adak had a lot of secrets that even some of the residents didn't know about. If I remember you had to have a Secret clearance just to get on the Rock but I'm not sure of that.
Wow- fantastic comment! I am headed to Adak at the end of August. I want to do a story on the 7 Doors of Doom and a few other sites around 'The Rock.' I would love to see that photo of you in your zinc impregnated suits! Anything specifically you'd like to see? And right... youth ignorance, perhaps they relied on that?!
@@FloridaBeachesToTheBeringSea I sent some pics of Adak to you with messenger and yes the pic of me and the crew in the zinc-impregnated suits 😂😂. If you could get into the fire station out at NSGA, I'd love to see it. It was built long after I left Both fire stations that I worked in are gone FS #1 was just past the High School. That is gone and so is the crash station by the Control tower is gone, and the original FS #2 that was at NSGA close to the water is gone too. Finger Bay has a lot of history that seems to be overlooked. So that's about it. Have fun and safe travels. Can't wait to see your next video.
During the cold war, the primary purpose was the Navfac, which housed the SOSUS cable termination and analysis. for detecting and tracking Soviet submarines. The P3 VP wing took the search to localize the contacts. If necessary to drop a nuclear depth bomb. Very serious stuff. I was an electronics tech at the Navfac for my year on the rock 74. The fallout shelters were a real joke, as the Hydrogen Bomb that would hit the island would leave nothing but a huge crater where the island used to exist.
Sorry about Writing ✍️ but A Dorm (NSGA) is The Shortest White Building Closes to The Bering 🌊 Hey 👋 I still get Chills down my spine Everytime I was this Video ☢️😄💯 Knowing Me Stationed NSGA would’ve probably been my Bunker !!!!!! 🌬️🌬️🌬️💨💨💨💨💨💨💨💨💨💨💨💨🌊🌊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
No I didn’t Know about the Shelters While Stationed there !!!! Hopefully 🤞 when U return to the ROCK 🪨 U can Visit NSGA. Especially A-Dorm Barracks. My old Room 😄🔜🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Miss Adak. Worked exchange office
I've seen Pirate gold on Adak Island. Definitely on my bucket list of places to see so much history. Thanks for sharing!

Worked in the ops building you showed near the end of this video in 84-85. It was surrounded by the wullenweber or "elephant cage" as we called it.
I would have loved to have seen that in tact. The outline looked massive.
Was with Marine Barracks 84/85 on Adak, you may leave Adak, but Adak never leaves you.

Probably the same gear we had when I was there in 1976.🤣I think the stuff we were using was from the late 60s.

I would love to hear more about life on Adak back then. I am working on organizing a return trip for those who want to revisit 'The Rock' next July!
