I loved this video! What makes you a reader is the fact that you read, your love for books, not the quantity of books you own. I also prefer ebooks and sometimes audiobooks.

I’m glad it resonated with you. I actually feel some guilt holding on to things I don’t use, and I think it’s transferred over to books, too. I didn’t say this in my video directly, but most of the books I do have hold some sentimental value which is why I think I’ve held on to them for as long as I have. Moving forward, I want to be mindful of those exact questions you’re asking when it comes to keeping something in my physical collection vs. finding a better home for them.

They're the one's I'm going to bring with me though every move. The rest of my books I'm starting to look at selling them on to people who want to experience them and enjoy them in ways I haven't in a very long time. 😊
I love this video, I really relate to it. I have also always been an avid reader and have collected books in the past. However, over the years I started to become more and more of a minimalist and during decluttering I figured out that a lot of the books I owned were more of a physical burden, than things I truly loved. I am someone that is very careful with their books, and having loads of pretty books actually gave me more stress than joy, because I wanted to keep them pristine, but also read them... Therefore, I decided to declutter most of my books, and the ones I kept, will be read to shreds haha. I have had an ereader for a couple of years and I love it's compactness and privacy (people can't judge you based on what you are reading). I have also always had a library membership ever since I was a child, and have been using it loads more since decluttering! We tend to connect our bookshelves to our identity or status, kind of like a business card to present to people that says "look at me, I read all these books". It's good to let that go and talk about the important books when the conversation comes to that

This! I’m so frustrated that book hauls and book shelf vlogs often perpetuate consumerism by emphasizing the acquisition of new books rather than the value of reading itself. Influencers could play a vital role in promoting the use of public libraries or book borrowing, encouraging their followers to explore the vast resources available for free. Seeing influencers with an extensive collection, while impressive, always displays an unattainable amount of wealth. It’s not about the quantity of books you own, but the quality of the reading experience. All of this which you touched on in your video. I’m trying to create a vlog/instagram showcasing a more sustainable way of reading whilst promoting public libraries. What you’re doing is amazing and inspiring to me!
I would love to see more influencers who showcase sustainable reading. While I understand that there’s validity in wanting to be a book collector, I wanted to convey that being a reader ≠ having a huge book collection. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Yea I often wonder what were to happen if you have to move and take all those books 😱 but I’m glad people that have a situation where they can have all those books. I think beauty and the beast made me dream of owning such a huge library lol but I’ve also have had to move and leave books behind which I miss but yea anything can happen so I don’t pursue to have a huge library. Although over time friends have gifted me books which I’m thankful for. I’ve also moved away from writing in my books since I want to be able to give them away if I need to move away without worrying about my private (journal like) thoughts being in them.
Agreed, I understand the appeal of having a huge library, and if I ever feel more stable in terms of where I’m living and have lots of disposable income, then I can see myself going all in. But I don’t see myself being in that kind of place even 5 or 10 years from now. I don’t annotate in my books, either, mostly because this was always a requirement in my English classes so I associate it with school work. I also find it distracting but again, ADHD. I admire some of the beautiful annotations I’ve seen on social media and love that it works for some people. But you’re right, annotating would make a book harder to give away.
Slowly, reading is becoming more of just aesthetic on BookTube and BookTok, with the number of people who buy books just to show them off increasing. I’m not pointing any fingers, simply making the fact clear, that with the rise of book content on social media platforms, it has its pitfalls like growing consumerism which leads to damage to the environment and exploitation of labour to name some. This is similar to the past hauls and unpacking videos in which young women used to present their make-up supplies and clothes. I think, this problem was very calmly pointed out in this video!
You touched on so many important point, particularly about the environment and exploitative labor. I also remember the TH-cam makeup era vividly, and I used to have a collection of makeup that was beyond what any one person could use. I love that reading has become trendier in some ways, but there are some downsides to promoting consumerism that are important to be aware of as well. Thanks for sharing.

Access to books based on region is such a valid and real issue. While I didn’t say it explicitly in my video, I ultimately believe “being a reader” looks different for everyone, and access is one of the many factors to why that is. Thank you for sharing.
I would recommend a Bible, maybe a KJV if you’re into the Middle English poetic feel, or a HSB or similar study to learn how the texts differ, where they originate, etc. It’s a very rich book!!
