The Jordan F1 cars were beautiful, the 191was the best looking race car ever even if it wasn't the fastest!

One of the real scary aspects of this crash is the fact that it occurred at virtually the same identical spot on the track where Tony's namesake father, Tony Bettenhausen, Sr., lost his life in 1961 when a suspension part broke on a practice run when he was testing a car for a friend.

I wish we could get some modern tool 1/24 or 1/25 model kits of the Indy cars from this era - the rear engine revolution - but especially the roadsters.
My first live GP, saw the 88B and Brabham BMW practice on the Thursday, got into the Paddock on the Saturday after the race and met my hero Elio De Angelis, still have the autograph he did for me, great memories, thanks for posting.
Patrick was a racer of the purest kind. I had nice memories to see him at the classic 22,8km long Nürburing Nordschleifen-Layout in the P34 during the German GP 1976, and later on in the Ligier JS9 at silly Hockenheim, during the German GP 1979.
Made more money for March with a licencing deal with Scalelextric, to produce a 1/32 scale slotcar, than March got from it's F1 team sponsors. Occasionally runs in historic F1 events, where it is a consistent mid-field runner.

Had this one for my Scalextric set. Shame it never got to race for real.
Both legs bent the wrong way...he made a courageous comeback but was never the same driver.

Exactly. That's a Jordan 191 with a Brian Hart V10, the first car with semi-automatic gearbox Donnelly drove. In the test run an oil pipe came loose and the engine blew up. Not a good start of the brand new engine for sure....

The FW13b was a good car and was fast at the beginning of the season, however, it would reach the end of it development potential quite early in the season. It would soon start to fall down the grid with the odd race suiting its characteristics. Boutsen was a fast and capable driver, but lacked the racing edge that separated the best from the rest in F1.
Boutsen: "The FW13 that debuted at the end of the year was even worse, a real disaster. I won in Adelaide only because it was raining heavily, the car didn't go: it was the engine that made the difference. Even my victory in Hungary in 1990, ahead of Senna, came thanks to the performance of the Renault. And then I was forced to leave, a real shame: in 1990 I worked a lot to develop active suspension, then the sponsor Labatt clearly said "we want Mansell" because the English market was more interesting for them, unlike the Belgian one which was considered scarce. So I had to leave the team: I had helped develop the car but then I didn't have the opportunity to take advantage of it."
The cars of today need to be the same weight as this one. A real pity that Hart didn't win any races in F1

perhaps, this one was incredibly understeer...
Occasionally races in historic F1 events. Understeers far less than you might expect. Friends, who've raced against it, say it has a slight edge on traction out of slow corners compared with conventional F1 cars of the period.

Toleman F1 team wanted Watson to race the car,but when the team got Benneton sponsorship, the sponsors wanted an Italian driver, Watson lost out.
