How To Pray to Bhairava
In this class, for the auspicious occasion of the Kāla Bhairava Jayanti tonight (it starts at 8:27pm PST on Friday, 22nd of November) which also happens to be Mā Siddheśvarī Jayanti, we offer a rather free and somewhat loose translation of the Kāla Bhairavashtakam, the 8 Verses Praising Bhairava attributed to Sri Shankaracharya to explore some of the non-dual implications of certain phrases in the hymn.
We make a few observations of Rāga Bhairava and how this hymn is connected to Mahishasura Mardini and also to Ravana, the famed antagonist of the Ramayana.
We make some passing remarks about Abhinava Gupta's Bhairava Stava and also Kshemarāja's verse to Bhairava in his commentary on the Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra. But most importantly, we talk about what it means to "pray". All prayer, all approaches to God are wonderful and valid, suiting different devotees of different temperaments who are all equally great! Having said that, I make a case for "self-less prayer" that cares for neither worldly nor even spiritual reward which I argue, can be accomplished through chanting hymns like the Kālabhairavāshtakam with fervor!

After we did our class on how to worship Bhairava (which you can watch here: www.patreon.com/posts/secret-mantras-8-116490016?Link&) we hopped into this inspired discussion about the deeper meaning of the word "Bhairava" in the context of the subtlest non-dual Tantrik teaching. Surrender to the Will of the Divine Mother and Be Free!

In the introduction to this morning's Hatha Yoga classes, we say a few things about determinism and the illusion of free will, offering a few stories from the lives of Vivekananda, Sarada and Ramakrishna to demonstrate how liberation (jīvanmukti), at least outside of sāmadhi, is simply the recognition that Mā's will is absolute, that She is alone is the Do-er.:"Mā, I move as you make me move; I...

  • @shattered_lightsb8381
    @shattered_lightsb8381 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    I, Abhinavagupta, with one pointed devotion, am praying to that supreme all-pervading Lord Śiva, who is himself present in each and everything that exists, and who through realization reveals himself as the one limitless Bhairavanātha the protector of the helpless. By the energy of your grace it has been revealed to me that this vibrating universe is your own existence. Thus, O Lord Śiva, this realization has come to me that you are my own soul and as such this universe is my own expression and existence. O possessor of everything, though your devotees, bound by karma and conditioning of mind, are caught in the net of destiny that arouses troubles and bondage, still they are not afraid of the fret and fever of this world. Having realized this universe as your own existence they are not afraid of worldly difficulties, because fear exists only when there is someone else to inflict it, but when there is none other than You how can fear arise. O angel of death, do not look towards me with wrathful and frightening eyes as I am always absorbed in the worship of Lord Śiva. Through constant devotion, meditation and reflection, I have become steadfast and courageous, one with the energy of the terrifying Bhairava, thus, your dreadful and frightening looks can do me no harm. O Lord Bhairava, I offer salutations to you who has awakened me to the realization that everything in existence is you alone. As a result of this awakening, the darkness of my mind has been destroyed and I am neither frightened of the evil family of demons nor am I afraid of Yama, the fearful Lord of death. O Lord Śiva, it is through your existence, revealed to me by real knowledge, that I realize all attachments and all that exists in this universe is activated by you. It is by this awakening that my mind becomes saturated with immortal devotion and I experience supreme bliss. O Lord, sometimes I feel misery which arouses torment in my mind, but at that same moment, blessed by a shower of your grace, a clean and clear vision of my oneness with you arises, the impact of which my mind feels appeased. O Lord Śiva, it is said that through charity, ritual bath and the practices of penance the troubles of worldly existence subside, but even more than this, by remembrance of the sacred śāstras and your words alone the current of immortality like a stream of peace enters my heart. O Lord Bhairava, through my utmost faith I have perceived you in the unique sacrifice of oneness, which otherwise is not possible though performing mountains of rituals. Being filled with your presence my consciousness intensely dances and sings, enjoying its own ecstasy. O compassionate Lord, under the influence of your glory and for the benefit of your worshipers, I Abhinavagupta have composed this hymn. By meditation and recitation of this hymn within a moment that merciful Lord Bhairava destroys the torments and sufferings springing from this wilderness of saṁsāra. Om Bhairavaya Namah!

    OMG NISH. My first time connecting with Batuk Bhairav and I am absolutely blown away. I was shown visions of every person & circumstance in my life in which I had encountered incarnations of his energy and particular powers. My days as a punk rocker & street urchin were completely put into perspective. He told me this was the energy I was looking for there, but it was only misplaced in some ways and being cultivated in others. The essence was there. All we wanted was freedom from attachments! Back in those days, I had a picture of Maa Kali hanging on my wall with her amazing head necklace. I had no idea how much she would mean to me later. The darkness holding all of the light through radical acceptance. Peace ❤.

    Thank you once again, Nish, for the herculean efforts you unstintingly devote to teaching us the many wonderful things which you have to share. Earlier in your lecture you mentioned one of my heroes, Swami Nikhilananda, without whom the English-speaking world would still be in the darkness of ignorance concerning Sri Ramakrishna and Ma Sarada Devi. I have always held a profound gratitude toward him in my heart, and I have a profound gratitude to you now, as well. Your wonderful lectures have added hugely to my own experience (dare I say "progress"?) in sadhana, and one of the gifts I truly long for, and which I try to emulate in my way, is your tireless loving delight in Maa Kali. It is truly inspiring to be in the presence of your sincere passion and fascination and devotion to our Holy Mother. I know that I am drawing closer to her as I begin to find her shining through, in more and more of the aspects of my life, and the journey is gloriously exciting. Anyway, thank you for your ceaseless devotion and for sharing it with the world! I never grow tired of hearing you speak about Maa and her saints, so you will never hear any complaints about your marathon lectures from me! All the best to you! Blessed Be and Jai Maa! Cead mile beannacht! --Naomi

    This is my first comment on your channel, and I hate that because I don’t want to leave the impression I am here to be negative since I have a critique. 😅 Can multiple infinities exist? No. Agreed. But wouldn’t you say worlds and souls are co-eternal with God? Not as to cause, but co-eternally dependent. This is the teaching on the Christian Trinity in Eastern Orthodoxy. They say the Father caused the Son and Spirit from all eternity. They are wrong to say the caused persons are co-EQUAL with the Father, but I think it makes perfect sense to affirm co-eternality in spite of their being caused by the Father. So, I would say two or more things can be eternal without being infinite. One can be eternal without being infinite, but God (who is the only infinite) must also be eternal by virtue of being infinite. Also, I think God DOES desire -but not in a way that implies need. Rather, in a way that implies She has total freedom. For example, He doesn’t need to manifest, but DESIRES to manifest. It is consistent with God’s nature to take delight in producing variety because of His own infinite nature. In fact, because She is infinite, She will always be satisfying Her own curiosity as to the endless ways She can experience Herself. So can God get bored? In a manner speaking, absolutely! She can experience desire, but only with reference to Herself. If anything, the desire is dependent upon God, rather than God being dependent on the desire.
