How To Really Love
To love is the essence of what it means to be human.
Love is the sweetest, most meaningful experience in embodied existence and it is for this love that we do everything.
But what does it mean to really love?
We have all of us been disappointed in love. This is because we don't know how to truly, really love. We are content with our little loves and little attachments and as such, we are all of us likely to miss out on the real thing! Bhakti Yoga, the path of Devotion, is the science of higher love.
In this talk, we give perhaps one of our most lucid interpretations of real, higher love based on Swami Vivekananda's book "Bhakti Yoga". We first discuss the two phases of love, love with form vs ecstatic love. And then, we have a discussion about renunciation, why it is so central to love and how it is naturally produced through love itself, reviewing the material we covered in this talk: th-cam.com/video/sccEVODjZHo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=l-gVJcNVw-yFIMVx and then finally, we offer a Tantrik reading of two works by Swami Vivekananda: "The Bhakta's Renunciation Results from Love" and "The Free Soul" from Volume III of the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda.
This is my favorite talk on Bhakti yet! Thank you all who came live and all who are watching the recording! May we become enflamed with awakened Love for the Infinite!

3 Ways To Avoid Spiritual Burn-out

Those who are very serious about spiritual life will find that from time to time, they get a reaction from doing too many spiritual practices. Usually it's the case that when we clean out the mind with mantra, meditation etc. all sorts of repressed complexes come out to be reviewed, compassionately digested and dissolved. So it's only natural that as we practice, we can feel like we are regress...

In October of 1896, in London, Swami Vivekananda gave a series of three lectures on the ancient concept of Māyā, that which causes the One to appear as Many, the Eternal to appear as the Changing and the Real to appear as the Unreal. Naturally, since Māyā is synonymous with "Ignorance" in the Advaita Vedanta system of Srī Shankara, it is a very, very elusive concept that has eluded even some of...

And yet the seed does not "become" soil, or sun, or air, or light or rain. The seed becomes a plant, growing according to its own sva-dharma, its own unique law of growth. Similarly, while the seed of spiritual aspiration is nourished by the the various "isms"...

Is this guy joking? Common ground is just common ground. Nothing more. These things aren’t synonymous for each other no matter how hard you squint your eyes. This guy even tries rolling Orisha into the mix. The Virgin Mary will never be Kali anymore than you will ever be the same person as your own sibling. Vastly different messages, vastly different appearances and behaviors - but that’s ok! In the end we find out that surprise! It was just a costume party all along and they were the same being just to trick you! Does Kali have forms? Sure. But singularity exists and Virgin Mary is the mother of Christ! Have some respect for separatism.

hmm ruthlessness isn't quite the right word i think. i've been thinking about this a lot because i couldn't reconcile the idea of ruthlessness with the idea of spirituality which prescribes compassion. i think the better word is detachment. you cannot be compassionate if you are too emotionally invested in someone's emotional outcomes - for example, if someone else's suffering causes you suffering then that is not compassionate, that's codependent (some would say that's empathy, but even empathy has a component of detachment, otherwise it becomes enmeshment, not empathy). So you look at a child who is suffering and you have compassion for them because they probably do not understand why they are suffering, so you are gentle with them. there is no gentleness in ruthlessness. but you can still be gentle if you are detached. you know that there is a karmic reason for their suffering so you stay present with them, maybe you help them bear this burden a little easier. but you don't fight against it and become outraged that a child is suffering because it is somehow wrong or bad - suffering is neither good nor bad, it is just a neutral fact of life. So maybe neutrality is the word to use here... ETA - i was thinking more about this and it's interesting that neutrality toward suffering in our culture is considered tantamount to ruthlessness. like if you don't oppose suffering you are heartless.

You don't chant the mantra OM, when you're communing with the light in the spiritual eye and are absorbed in it you will hear the sound of OM. It won't come from outside yourselves it will come from within your own brain. In order to shut the senses completely off you'll focus on the light in the spiritual eye and listen to the sound of OM and separate from material existence and remain unwaveringly conscious of the divine communion. You have to meditate every single day with deep relaxation, and consciously staying aware of the breathtaking function while letting go of everything external sensually and transferring the mind into communing with the light. Then when the light builds up, you'll hear the sound of OM.

This is incredibly good and heartening to hear! I feel carried right back to those heady days when the magnificent Swamigi Vivekananda was here on Earth, ministering to the ignorant masses of America, no less! How precious every blessed second in his company must have been to those lucky few who had the chance to study directly from him, to sit at his lotus feet and learn the Truth! I am also gladdened to hear that Swamigi cooked and consumed spicy food. I have given up most of my old hedonistic ways now, in search of the awareness that brings truly transcendent liberation; no longer the dope-addled gutterpunk, no longer the drink-and-cigarette-fueled nocturnal poetess... I've give up almost all my lovely poisonous crutches in the name of taking flight at last... but when I heard from one teacher of Sattvas that even chilis, even spices, were to be eschewed by the serious seekers of Grace, I nearly gave up and went back to supporting the distilleries. The idea that even good, vegan, cruelty-free, home-cooked vegetables were considered unholy if adorned with cayenne pepper etc. was more than I could bear. Well, nevermind! If it was good enough for Vivekananda, it's good enough for me, by God! May my faith never waver, and may the curry never become bland!

“Awareness, free and indipendent, is the cause of the performance of everything. . . Now anything else such as maya, prakrti, and so on could not be the cause of any object or aspect of reality because anything separate from the Light of Awareness would be unperceivable, and therefore cannot be said to exist. On the other hand, if something is manifest to perception, for that very reason it is inseparable from, and of one nature with, the Light of Manifestation, and the nature of this light is simply Awareness. So Awareness alone, and nothing else, must be considered the cause of anything that appears.” -Pratyabhijñāhṛdayam chapter 1 (Hareesh Ji’s translation)

Namaste Swami Sivananda Saraswati (Rishikesh) has given 26 points on mantra japa as below PRACTICAL AIDS TO JAPA Select any Mantra or Name of God, preferably that given to you by your Guru, and repeat it from 108 to 1,080 times daily (one to ten malas). Always keep your Guru-Mantra a secret. Never disclose it to anyone. It is better to stick to one Mantra only. See Lord Krishna in Rama, Shiva, Durga, Gayatri and in everyone. Get up at 4a.m. and do Japa for two hours. The early morning period (Brahmamuhurta) and dusk is the most favourable time for Japa and meditation. This is when Sattva (purity or steadiness) is predominant. Take a bath or wash your hands, feet, face and mouth before sitting for Japa in the morning. At other times this is not absolutely necessary. Do Japa whenever you have leisure, at the three junctions of the day - morning, noon and evening - and before going to bed. Face east or north during the practice. This enhances the efficacy of the Japa. Sit on a deer skin or rug. Spread a piece of cloth over it. This conserves body-electricity. Sit in a separate meditation room or in any suitable place, such as a temple, on a river bank or under a banyan or peepul tree. Maintain a steady pose. Attain mastery of the posture. You must be able to sit in Padmasana, Siddhasana or Sukhasana for three hours at a strech. Reslove to complete a certain minimum number of malas before leaving your seat. Recite some prayers before starting the Japa. A rosary is a whip to goad the mind towards God. Use a rudraksha or tulsi mala of 108 beads. Do not allow the mala to hang below the navel. Keep the hand near the heart or the nose. The mala must not be visible to you or to others. Cover it with a towel or handkerchief, which must be clean and washed daily. Use the middle finger and the thumb of the right to roll the beads. The use of the index finger is prohibited. Do not cross the meru while rolling the beads. Turn back when you come to it. Sometimes do the Japa without a mala. Use a watch. Do mental Japa for a time. When the mind wanders, do the Japa aloud, or whisper the Mantra for some time and come back to mental Japa again as soon as possible. When you repeat the Mantra, have the feeling or mental attitude that the Lord is seated in your heart, that purity or Sattva is flowing from the Lord into your mind, that the Mantra is purifying your heart, destroying desires, cravings and evil thoughts. Do not do the Japa in a hurried manner, like a contractor who tries to finish his work in a short time. Do it slowly with feeling, one-pointedness of mind and single-minded devotion. Pronounce the Mantra distinctly and without any mistakes. Repeat it neither too slowly nor too fast. Increase the speed only when the mind wanders. Be vigilant and alert during Japa. Stand up when sleep tries to overpower you. Try to associate the Japa with the rhythm of the breath and meditate in the form of your Deity. Keep a picture or idol of the Deity in front of you. Think of the meaning of the Mantra while repeating it. Regularity in Japa Sadhana is most essential if success is to be achieved. Sit in the same place and at the same time every day. Do not beg for any worldly objects from God while doing Japa. Feel that your heart is being purified and that the mind is becoming steady by the power of the Mantra and the Grace of the Lord. Observe silence and avoid distractions, calls and engagements. It is important not to leave the place at once after the Japa is over and mix with everyone or plunge into worldly activity. Sit very quietly for at least ten minutes, humming some prayer, remembering the Lord and reflecting upon His infinite love. Then, after devout prostration, leave the place and commence your routine duties and activities. In this way the spiritual vibrations will remain intact. Continue the current of Japa mentally at all times, whatever be the activity in which you are engaged. Carry on your Sadhana with tenacity and perseverance, without a break. Realize the glorious goal of life and enjoy supreme bliss.

    • @NishTheFishYoga
      @NishTheFishYoga 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@ronidutta I’m about to upload one comparing Advaita Vedanta to Kashmir Shaivism but you’re right: this would be a very good comparison also! A few quick differences come to mind: 1. Ramanuja accepts Saguna Brahman only and rejects Nirguna Brahman whereas Non Dual Tantra accepts both (I.e Shiva-Shakti) 2. Ramanuja makes the sectarian claim that Vishnu Narayana is alone the highest reality whereas Non Dual Tantra accepts that Shiva is formless put consciousness which can be seen in many different ways. (I.e it’s less sectarian) 3. In Ramanuja, Shakti (Laxmi) is relegated to being only the “first Jiva” (Adi-Jiva) who can help Bhaktas with compassion but is herself only a minor servant of a male Absolute 4. Liberation in Ramanuja is post mortem only (Videha mukti) and constitutes an eternal heaven in union with Vishnu where Non Dual Tantra recognized eternal heavens (in plural) but also acknowledges Jivan mukti, embodied realization 5. Ramanuja places Bhakti Yoga at the top of a hierarchy whereas Non Dual Tantra accepts all the three (or four) upayas as each valid ways to realize God independently of the others 6. The world is seen as the body of God independently Ramanuja so this is parinama vada, the doctrine of the actual transformation of God. Whereas in Non Dual Tantra the world is a reflection (abhāsa) only and no real change occurs in God (i.e, a realist version of Vivarta vada) And most importantly: 7. In Ramanuja the Jiva is only a part of God but in Non Dual Tantra the Jiva IS God.

As AC Prahbupada said, God realization depends upon God, similarly as Jesus taught that holy Spirit would remind and lead them into all truth, Jesus himself saying he was the truth and that all would be drawn to himself, as is written.

Myself, l consider, to believe that the wisdom of God is that the faith of God is that God's love is God's hope, for us and given to us of God, this being our true confession of praise that shall come freely in love for God and all creation, as one.

Forgive me, please, if I have already mentioned this in a comment on one of your videos before, but I feel moved to share the following: Twenty five years ago, I was having one of my very first out-of-body (and more importantly, out-of-ego) experiences, and I was looking at the energy of the seemingly infinite universe (multiverse?) unfolding, and a gentle voice was there within my awareness occasionally answering my queries as the experience went along. As the vast multi-galactic spirals whirled before my dream vision, I asked: Is it, is GOD, really INFINITE? To which the voice in my head, who sounded and felt like a loving mother, answered: "Of course it is infinite! It couldn't exist at all if it weren't!" That's it. Nothing can exist at all that is not infinite. If you sit with that one for a minute, it becomes more and more obviously true, but at the time it was a completely new concept to me, and it made me feel exceedingly happy.

You can have your own religion but you cannot have your own truth.

thank you for sharing. having "escaped" forceful violent forms of religion, one might find it difficult to accept the Spiritual even after having experiences or glimpses of it whether through meditation or individually unique experiential moments. bhakti/devotion/rituals feels like a hurdle. what do you think about approaching this from a fully "secular" POV? there is a feeling of having 1 feet each in both spaces.

You don't have to believe in anything you can just live in multiple realities hold multiple contradicting opinions at the same time this is actually key to wisdom. You can believe in Religion while also being atheist you don't have to cling to anything it's your ego who clings to labels

“in actuality it is the unbounded Light of Consciousness (prakāśa), reposing in its innate bliss [of self-awareness], endowed with the Powers of Willing, Knowing, and Acting, that we call God.” -Abhinavagupta
