I am curious as to why Mary does not file an IRS 673 form for tax exemption when residing outside the US for more than 330 days/year. We have been living in Japan for the past 12 years, and we do not pay taxes in the US, except for FICA. We would have to pay Japanese tax though if we weren't working for the US military on SOFA status. But when I retire to Spain next year, I will just file a 673 for exemption. I won't be paying taxes in Spain either because my SS comes from having taught for a public university, and according to lawyers in Spain, Spain would exempt me for that reason. Otherwise, I would be paying taxes on my SS in Spain, not the US.

I’m sorry but… WHAT IS THIS GUY TALKING ABOUT?? I think he was stuck in his apartment the whole time while in Peru… ‘cause there are definitely LOTS of fun activities to do in Lima.. why do you think there are plenty of articles naming it as one the best places to tour not just in Peru?? Besides walking along on the but in Latin America? Along the green coast …you can do parachuting 🪂, you can run and join exercise groups, or ride a bicycle and check the gorgeous scenery..you can picnic, play chess, you can also surf or take lessons and learn how to…you can join the concerts and food festivals they sometimes open up in that coast too, you can join the fun parties and clubs that open up along the beach or in the center of the city… there are plenty of activities to in the inner city as well, like checking out the museums, joining food tours, go to the fun mixology bars, or pisco/wine tastings, checkout the archeology sites, join the culture expositions they do in the square, go to the multitude of parks and checkout the free exhibitions of paintings/plays/dances, checkout the catacombs or the abundant art all through the city displayed in churches, museums, parks.. including the famous water fountain park…and obviously do the regular things people do in other countries like go to the movies, restaurants, arcades etc. There are just A LOT of things to do in Lima that you really wouldn’t get bored at all…there are everyday activities in the open too…also Lima definitely has a metro, an underground one and an elevated one… it’s not just buses and taxis… so this guy is way OFF… and that’s when I really feel his account of living there FLOPS…… he needed to walk around in Lima to realize what he is missing out on.

Sorry. In my opinion, the whole expat trend is not that good for Italy. The nation already has a very low birth rate and needs people in their working age to keep things going, instead. The italian NHS is based on a lifelong compulsory contribution by every worker. Young people finance the health system with taxes at a stage of their lives when they do not need much health services, in anticipation of when they will need it most. By contrast expats are generally elderly people who have never paid for the system (they only have a private insurance that does not flow into the Italian NHS) and, because of their age, they are more demanding in term of health services. Due the progressive aging of the population, relative reduction of tax payers and a lot of management issues, the italian NHS is lacking resources and is already worsening year by year. So basically expats widely utilize a collapsing health care system which they never contributed for, in a fast aging society.

Thank you for sharing this. Well said. I do see that the population decline in Italy is a major issue and any strategy to get people into those communities to sustain them is imperative at this point. I do hope that the influx of interested expats moving to Italy do help financially and hopefully improving some of the struggling systems currently in place.

@@adventurefreaksss I was just about to comment as well about the reciprocity. She spoke incorrectly about that. I’m from New York and they do not have reciprocity. So you would be only be able to drive on New York State license for 1 year and after that it would require that you take the exam & driving test in French. I actually live in Portugal right now and am considering moving to France. Because I hold a Portuguese drivers license - which was exchanged for my New York license, I still fall under the same rules that I would have to take the test in French. In addition,, France will require me to take actual driving lessons and it starts with a minimum of 5 hours of training and it could be up to 20 hours. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been driving. It’s just a rule that they have. The driving schools are expensive and very time-consuming New York state is looking at approving reciprocity with France, but there is no timeline established yet.

@@boink800 In Portugal, when you exchange your license your original driver’s license number gets printed on the back of your EU license along with a note basically saying that it’s a conversion and to reference the original document. If you try to exchange your license in another country, they’re going to look at your original license to determine if it’s eligible to be exchanged. If you exchange your license without a reciprocity agreement (i.e. you have to take the tests), if exchanged from a reciprocal state in the US, then there’s no note on the back and you can just exchange it anywhere within the EU like a normal EU license. It's only applicable if my Portuguese DL originated in Portugal (meaning it's where I first was licensed). It's the only thing holding me up now from moving to France. If NY would allow the reciprocity with France, then my PT license would be considered exchangeable.

Private insurance is not extremely expensive, for 100 USD you get almost top tier insurance, 200 if you are 50+ for prime insurance. Most Peruvians make 400-500 USD and have insurance for 20-50 usd although there are many "solidarity" clinics that are cheaper. Of course outside of Cusco there are many peasant towns and communities and they do make less than average. Public health has money for good treatment but is lost in corruption and the public hospitals don't actually get the budget they should.

Really good interview. You always ask the questions I and others want to know. Thank you!The Consulate requires 31,000€ per person or 38,000€ per couple passive income. For the US, each consulate has leeway and may require more. For example, Miami Consulate requires 60,000€ for a couple. They also require a credit report which is not mentioned on the consulate website. The € required has to be PASSIVE income. Social security, pension or annuities for example. It has to show you are getting a check without doing anything. 401ks, Roth IRAs and savings do not count for passive income. They will not consider it. He had to have some other passive income other than $1200 in Social Security. I think he said something about land, so maybe he was renting it out and that would be passive income. He wasn’t clear, but maybe he had a lawyer submit the paperwork and didn’t really know the details. I appreciate the time both of you gave to this interview Grazie mille😊

They should cut that passive income requirement in half...unless they like having all those empty cities....somene can afford to buy a property but not the passive income...doesnt make sense

Living in France for 18 years. It’s health care is superior to anything in USA and affordable. Food is superior too. Problem now in Europe is debt like in USA. Before end game arrives in USA & France, France proposing to tax wealth over a certain amount 90% as well as income & inheritance. They will also require French to list everything they own to be their collateral. Additionally, all communications are tracked leaving no privacy to ask questions or make comments anywhere.

I planned on retiring there because they use the USD. Then I realized USD is going to crash to zero in 2029-2030ish. That’s the end game for the USD. It will be dangerous to live there and worse than the pandemic when there were no job.
