Episode 269 - Berggren, Balance, Battling for the Playoffs
We are clearly regressing since & because of Yzerman! Its such a shame that we think we have to put up with these results for a longer amount of time because of the insane idea that it will be bad manors if we didn't put up with his horrible decisions over & over & over again all for the soul reason he was successful in his playing days for this franchise so now we somehow owe him opportunity after opportunity setting this team back with his weird, & flaky horrible free agency signings that should be obvious to any that watches hockey even only a lil bit not to give copp that contract and signing chariot giving him anything over a dollar is horrible & negligent! Omg i can go on & on & on The move that burned me up more than anything is how he did Walman! What a cocky selfish move! Im sorry a player like Walman who was/is a fan favorite is nonsensical! I don't really give a f if he was a show-man that rubbed some old skool players the wrong way! He alone was worth the price of admission but no Stuck up Stevie cuts him loose for basically a pack of gum! All for the wrong reasons! Horrible! So i guess we'll continue to be in the worst position in hockey... too bad to make the playoffs & too good never bad enough to get a top 5 player in the draft! Wake up wings fam!
Lyon is my fave
Compher has explosive diarrhea and is spreading that around to the rest of the boys..
Complaining about 72 degrees is crazy to me, but I am an Arizonan I just feel like 72-77 is perfect weather
I didn't mind it, but I'm ready for fall 😂
It should be said that the flu has been going around the team for about a week now. That does explain some of the lack of energy they had against the Islanders. They’re not going to make excuses, but illness has been a factor for the last couple of games and will still be a factor for the next couple of games.
Johansson makes a great first pass. Lalonde is fkn up not playing him. But that's no surprise. Tyler has no clue.
According to reported practice lineups, it looks like Johansson should be back in tonight vs New Jersey.
The rangers skill and islanders defensive structure make teams look bad.
Pretty sure the Wings did that all on their own.
37:30 - The Wings just don't fire coaches mid-season. Newsy's job is safe through April at least. It's also quite likely he'll be extended unless the team regresses *hard* from last year
That’s wild, advertising gambling then advertising gambling problems help
Thats the disclaimer for the ad...
@@GrindLinePod I understand you gotta make your money, I just thought it was funny. I still think it’s strange that gambling and alcohol are able to advertise when both can and will cause bad addictions.
Let's get real about Lyon, time to face the facts. He has won 3 of his last 17 games, he has averaged an .874 save % over that span, his most recent win he had an .810 save %. He didn't record a single win in the entire month of March last year, he lost 10 in a row from February 29th to March 30th. The game vs the Rangers the 1st goal by Lafreniere was very saveable, if that was Husso everyone would be saying it was his fault and he sucks. The 3rd goal off the faceoff Lyon was completely out to lunch, couldn't locate the puck or read the play, just stood there like a statue out of position and wasn't even screened. Why is this entire fanbase incredibly harsh on Husso even when the team is atrocious in front of him like the Penguins game and Lyon can do no wrong. Sick of the double standard. People act like Husso cost them the season last year and he only lost 5 games in regulation the whole year, he had a .949 save % vs Carolina and a .927 save % vs the Rangers in 2 of those losses.
No one said Lyon can do no wrong but he did carry the team through a very large portion of last season all while playing far above his career average in games. He was tired, you could tell. But I believe right now that Lyon would be a better backup for Talbot until he proves otherwise.
He's head and shoulders better than petry. Petry should never put a wings jersey on ever again
Definitely not in the groove - they had a bad pre season and it’s bleeding into the actual season.
They beat the Preds and played well against a crazy good Rags team
@@GrindLinePod that bottom 6 and inconsistent defense is gonna be a problem all year. They don’t have a roster in place to compete with half the league
totally not listening to this while writing the review of the Rangers game.
Fell free to use quotes, clips, and references 😂
In the groove? 1-3 after Thursday. Fire Lalonde before it's too late.
@@kenyoung3265 they played really well against a contender in the Rags and the best goalie in the league.
Honestly I worry about Kasper being sent to GR. You tell kids they can earn a spot on the team, they outperform everyone, and send them down anyway. Can't imagine that's much of a confidence builder or feeds into trust with the organization.
Kasper should center line 3 and get looks on the PK and PP2. Let him work his way up the lineup. I think 11-15 minutes in the NHL is more valuable than 20 in the AHL. Shuffle the lines, make it happen. I think we’ll get there sooner rather than later.
They’re going to keep him in grand rapids for one more year and then he will play next year as 2C, Compher will shift down. He will be a beast
The Watson penalties were more of a reaction to the pera xhekaj issue. The refs didn't want things getting to that point and took him out of the game rather than calling the actual penalties.
My issues with this team are, could have had Walman instead of Holl, instead of Gustafsson, cuz there's no way Yzerman didn't know the Johansson situation was coming. Could switch Berggren and Fischer on the depth chart and it's immediately better for both lines, and both player types,
That 3rd line is used as a shut down line. Berggren lacks the defensive game to fit in.
Y’all are getting way too bent outta shape about Kasper and the opening night roster. He’s gonna be the first injury call up. Hes 20 yrs old and top line minutes in GR are better than 8 minutes per game in the NHL. You 2 are the quintessential whiney bitch Wings fans
Copp on the 4th line at 6 mil a year, LOL
How much better would it have looked if we could’ve kept Jake Wallman at basically the same price point as we’re having to pay Justin Holl to ride the waiver wire. That might’ve helped our defense a little bit.
Walman was not very good last season which was one of the reasons for the trade. So I'm not sure the defense would have been any better.
Not to mention NOBODY wanted Holl. The money from Walman allowed Tarasenko to be signed. You’re uniformed dude
@@brentanderson3887 The money from Walman wouldn’t have been needed if the signing of Holl hadn’t occurred in the first place. Had that not happened they wouldn’t have needed to give Walman away for nothing and might have been able to flip him for something more useful at the trade deadline.
@@GrindLinePod Walman was fine for the first half of the season and I would argue that he’d be a more valuable asset to us today than Holl is or will ever be.
Walman was just okay. I think there is also more to the story behind the scenes than we will never know. Remember how he sat out, like what, at least a month. There was never a statement about an injury.
7:46 "lost Jake Walman" by losing you mean we gave him a raise, then paid to get rid of him. Difficult to call that a loss, more like removed a tumor. Honestly I thought Walman was playing well, even with getting the most difficult defensive minutes in the NHL along with Mo. So Yzerman who is smarter than everyone according to previous statements in this video, thought Walman was a tumor, yet you, myself, and many others claim Walman leaving was a loss. Is Yzerman really "smarter"? Was giving Walman a raise, then paying to get rid of him smart? Or did he get lucky in TB?
Lost as in not on the roster anymore. I understand moving Walman, he had a pretty bad season after one fantastic one. We will neve know exactly what happened there though.
Another whiney bitch fan!!
He was moving wallman because we were making room for trouba
Every time we think Parros is at the lowest of lows he somehow goes lower
Raymond has been better than Larkin has in 3 seasons and Larkin had Datsyuk and Zetterburg to learn from.
@DTA555. Raymond is a winger, center is a harder position. Larkin built up every year, Raymond didn't take a step his second season but to a huge one last season. Let's see if that continues.
@@GrindLinePod Larkin played Wing his first season and then split center and wing in his second season. Yes he did not have the talent in his 3rd season but he was always a do it yourself player.
I don’t think Larkin makes it to the end of his contract because of his injuries as of late and he is a target 🎯 for many teams now.
@@DTA555. I don't think it's as bad as people try and make it out to be.
Can we get time stamps added my dudes?
@@chriskennedy5341 working on a way to get that automated
I think adding games to the regular season is a precursor to expansion. The sooner the new CBA is negotiated, and these games get added, just watch expansion come a short time later.
I would assume expansion means an even LARGER bump in the salary cap. If so, make it 40 teams by 2040. Make the cap $160 million. Let's go!
@@DerpDerpityDerpwould be nice I would love to see Quebec get a team again. A lot of places need a team. But it is going to take time and I don’t mind it. It’s a young man’s game but now we have an older team again and that means injury. Just wish SY would not be like KH and hold his prospects back.
Petrys coming off
Genuinely, I can see Raymond as a johnny Gaudreau RIP ❤ Smaller faster winger capable of 100 points in a season
Does Seider go higher than Raymond?
@@sens_outlook absolutely
100%
@@GrindLinePod7x8.55. Imo that price should be max term what do you think?
Wings will be here in Nashville early this year 1pm Saturday game i already got my tickets 🎟 Let's go 🛞🪽
No comparison to Martin St.Louis? Seems like a good one to me. Size compared to league average and his numbers starting out in the nhl are a little better.
That's another good one. I was trying to think of some examples from today's NHL.
Since u guys dropped this episode, Seider getting extended is imminent for this evening. Big news only happens after u guys drop a new episode
That is what we are trying to manifest 😂😂
Tyler...SMH...There was never a Chance of Berggren not getting a contract. Did you forget your lunch ?
Considering the fact that Berggren was being used as trade bait at the deadline and wasn’t overly thrilled about how he was used in the organization last season, him getting traded was never “far fetched” this offseason.
This aged super poorly. Probably worst episode you guys have done yet.
Because he signed 4 days later? We put out the episode and he didn't have a contract.
Raymond not practicing with the team waiting for a contract could be detrimental to his development, he has to train with the best and have his mind in the game. You see how every star in the NFL that holds out loses skill dramatically, then the team pays for them anyway but the player already had in his mind " I'm gonna suck until I get paid" Just pay him his money, he's a long term players, no less than 8 years
I'd be shocked. It doesn't matter if you go from 8 to 8.9 if you miss a year of an 8 year deal. It's hard to imagine they're over one million apart in expectations. Then again... if you want that top 3 draft spot, that would help you get there. Lol
If its really 8x8 and Yzerman isnt signing it idk what he is thinking. Raymond and Seider on 8x8's would be ideal.
You give Raymond whatever he wants. You tell Seider to take it or leave it.
@sergioalpert66 you give them both what they want. Seider is a 23 year old top RD. Very hard to find.
@@GrindLinePod I think some people overrate Seider. His brain shuts down when there's a scramble in front of the net. He is an all-time great at screening his own goalie.
Steve pass is over this situation has piss me off bad he had over a year to sign his 2 best young we have. This off season was a joke he did nothing to make this team better. Maybe be time for Steve to move up and give 1 of the assistant Gm the chance
I'd say he improved the team but Mo and Raymond should be signed.
Swayman is American, there are no visa issues with him practicing in Boston w/o a contract
I get being upset that Mo and Ray aren't stateside, but there may be INS / visa reasons behind that. While the team still holds their rights, they are technically not under contract, and technically don't have a job in the USA. We've seen that happen before, especially with European players, so it's quite likely they are staying there on the advice of their agency. Despite not being here, I think it's a really good sign that they are training together! I'm happy to wait a week or two into camp if it secures a long-term deal for both of them.
Look who bothered to show up. Did he bring his lunch?
@@kenyoung3265 not this time 🤣
Yes let’s trade Berggren for another mediocre small forward lmao ... much rather hang on to Berggren who’s been a dominate shl and ahl forward and who had much more offensive abilities. Can’t expect miracles from him when you shove him on a 4th line with garbage linemates Yzerman’s to blame for constantly delaying players . Agree with him on holding a stand with raymond and seider. This is a cap world, love seider but he’s not worth more money than makar and raymond shouldn’t get a penny over 8. Entice them with signing bonus’s. Yzerman will get them done
Will "Bad News" play Berggren? He is a career killer after all.
@@kenyoung3265 who the hell’s bad news
@socialmediag5485 Makar contract isn't recent. Cap goes up, contracts go up. Faber is the most recent comparable.
@@GrindLinePod seider is no where near the level of makar. Faber got 8 , seider shouldn’t get anything close to 9 . 8,5 is the absolute max
Maybe Yzerman should have "taken a stand" when negotiating contracts with Copp, Chiarot, Holl, and to a lesser extent, Compher. He overpaid those 4(and needlessly traded for Petry after just signing Holl, and now is when he is supposed to finally become a hard negotiator with the future stars of the team? Maybe he should learn some self restraint come July 1 instead and spend his cap dollars on the worthwhile players.
maybe its not dollars, but signing bonus amount that lockout proofs the contracts, and chris ilitch doesn't want it.
Wow. You guys are clueless. Go back and look at Stamkos contract negotiations with Yzerman in TB. Nothing new here. Save your overreactions for the Lions opener next year. Lol
Stamkos signed his post rookie 5-year deal on July 19th, 2011. He signed his 8 year extension in Tampa on June 29th, 2016.
@@GrindLinePod overreaction and superficial research. Yzerman walked Stamkos into FA in 2016 before he finally signed him. I love Lucas but he’s no Stamkos.
@directionallycorrect2027 Stamkos never made it to free agency. Signed 2 days before. Situation is not the same and Raymond is a star in the making.
No way Danielson makes the team. It's SY we're talking about. Needs 5 years in GR
@@GrindLinePod “up to” not “into” stupid phone. The rest is correct
The wing's need an Austin Watson type, on the bench at the least. Aren't you getting sick of teams like Ottawa beating up out players?
We have Ras and Edvinsson. Tarasenko will mix it up. We can't put a plug in just to fight.
Patches is not a player that this team needs. Time to start the rebuild with young players who have a lot to prove and are hungry. SY needs to get rid of old teammates and get actual quality Management who can help with who they need to be playing and not just a vet winning a spot because they are making money? Play the best players that show they have the ability to make the team better.
They are doing that. The Patches stuff is just a rumor and I expect 2-3 rookies to make the roster after camp.
I guess Kubalik really loves halloween since he was a ghost all year. damn what a falloff he had
awesome austin watson? in detroit? how cool!
hell no, he‘s washed
@@billsomebody4151 he's on a PTO that will probably amount to nothing. He's not necessary.
@@GrindLinePodhalf the Roster is washed up. I think SY should be Trading players and start the rebuild next season or even waive a contract I don’t care how much it is because some team might need a vet, for the young players they have. Detroit is the only team who is not playing enough youth who have more to prove than players who were paid too much for the non scoring or not defensively good but Bergs has to be better or sit while two players In Tarasenko and Kane that have no defense and bergs who can learn to play but is called out by a Hypocritic Coach that is afraid to do so with a vet.
@DTA555. berggren can not be compared to Tarasenko or Kane who both have far higher offensive ability.
