Why Are There So Many Streaming Services? - The Unbundling of Technology (and AI)

    For anybody wanting to waste their time watching this - this is entirely a US lens about these global social media platforms. Given the US only comprises 4.14% of the planet's population, the focus will be of zero relevance to the majority of youtube users and the other 95.86% of the world. I really wish Americans who post content on global platforms about global platforms realised the audience is - wait for it - global. #USAmyopia p.s - Twitter/X usage has dropped 23% since Elon bought it. It's not that complicated to work out people

    If I didn’t want to use X I would just go to Threads. Plus I heard BlueSky has alot of bots also same with X but honestly Elons verification method seems to be working. I honestly don’t think X will die because know it’s kinda backed by Trump and politicians like Republicans but it’s also more diverse than BlueSky as well. Honestly Bluesky and Threads will never succeed because most people won’t delete their X account or app because some have been on the app forever and X/Twitter has been around for a long time. Also, I don’t see it being successful people also have businesses and celebrities have alots fans on X/Twitter still. Also even if BlueSky might be catching up with alot users it really doesn’t matter because I’m pretty sure most of those users were just trying out the app and will come back to X and plus the other thing about Elons X app is it’s just not going to be like Twitter it’s going to be an everything app with emails and facetimes. You also have spaces and communities and bunch of other stuff Elon has added to the website to make much better! Also he added where you can look at hiring jobs on X like honestly it’ll probably never die and especially I think it’s gonna grow and Also don’t forget he also implemented XAi grok which is really powerful and better than OpenAi and he implemented Tiktok and TH-cam feature on X where you can post videos and clips and scroll down.

    I give BlueSky about 2 years ngl… It looks mid I rather use X. Plus I would compare BlueSky to the platform Rumble like you can’t really take down a platform that’s already fully built. The reason why I compare Rumble to BlueSky is because Rumble is trying to takeover TH-cam and Twitch but it’s failing to do so. Same with the platform Kick that’s trying to takeover Twitch but still can’t do so because Twitch has a lot of users and it’s already fully built.

    From what I am hearing, Bluesky is a haven for liberals who can't handle conservatives and need a comfort puppy where they have all thier snowflake friends agreeing with them. I could be wrong but they don't like conservatives and will report them for the slightest insult.

    I'm sure people who can't stand Trump will leave X for Bluesky, but that is a small percentage. Bluesky will be an echo chamber like MSNBC or the View, and nothing more. Even Stephen A, who was a Kamala supporter all along, is fed up with the lying and hypocrisy from the left. Sooner or later, people are going to realize that 1. Trump is nowhere near as bad as the media makes him out to be, and 2. the Democratic party is worse than anybody could possibly imagine. I don't put Trump on a pedestal and have concerns about him as well, but compared to the most self destructive administration in American history, he and his team are undoubtedly an improvement.

    I like the concepts of Bluesky and Mastodon, not because of their far-left userbase, but the concept of decentralized social media is a good concept. The problem with it, like all alt-tech since 2016, is that it will, never, ever get a userbase large enough to sustain itself. It will meet the fate of Parler, Truth, Gab, Threads, etc. X has so much seniority and such a wide userbase it only dies if it ruins itself.

    For me, it's not that Bluesky is necessarily a left twitter or that X has shifted right, but rather that it is better twitter. For people who depend on social media for things like their business, you live and die by the algorithm. And most if not all platforms have started to take advantage of what I think I want to see in favor of pushing random stuff and ads. Just for the approach of shifting algorithmic controls to the users, I see Bluesky having more potential than what we give it credit for. Migration from Bluesky has come in waves so you tend to see a huge influx and drop off. It's more of a question of how many users stick around. However, I do agree that it is already a success as a proof of concept.

    This one is awesome! But how could you explain Reddit as a Global connection product with long-tail contents also doing well? It seems a little bit contradictory to what you argued.

    • @feelscraft
      @feelscraft หลายเดือนก่อน

      sorry for the super late reply! you raise a great counterpoint since Reddit doesn't fit my framework super well. But here's how I would try to map it: I see Reddit as globally-connected because it's a pseudonymous network where you engage with content globally. You mostly don't connect with 1st/2nd degree connections (local). I'd also add that the bigger and more mature a social network is, the more it starts to eat up every attribute by nature of network effects (everyone is on it so what starts local becomes global and what's global becomes also local). The framework I propose works best on the early iterations of a social network. Reddit in its early days had far less subreddit/interest coverage. Everyone congregated around stuff like /r/IAMA, /r/AskReddit, /r/funny, etc where it was just a giant global community most people would lurk in. Over time as network effects kick in and the community explodes, you start to see subreddit coverage of every nook and cranny interest. For example, most big cities (even small cities) have their own subreddit. You could certainly say these start to resemble local connections (though again with Reddit being pseudonymous there's a floor and how "local" it can ever feel imo).

    Also great point about Streaming companies! Streaming services are slowly bundling back together into cable-like services again. ESPN, Fox Sports and Warner just merged into a single sports hub I see that open source language model training can be extremely profitable. Think: hosting GPU power to train LLMs/AI and receive compensation. This could repurpose plenty of Crypto miners and GPU’s on market… however we should also considered in terms of how individuals can leverage this. I wana see more new Disruptors rather than FAANG buyouts just to kill or stagnate competition.
