Addressing THE reel | Discussing the comments
This reel I posted weeks ago had garnered over 1.3 million views. This was totally unexpected. With all the attention it got, it had many people in the comment section letting me know their thoughts and feelings. Today I will discuss the major 4 themes I saw in the comment section, and address them all.

FOUR REASONS why illustrations MATTER in children's books
มุมมอง 86หลายเดือนก่อน
As a children's book author and illustrator I adore quality illustrations. Some think that the art is an afterthought and, "they are just kids they don't care." I completely disagree. I am sharing 4 main reason why I think the illustrations do matter. Where to...

    You’re right. The quality of the majority of children’s books being published today is abysmal. Subject matter, writing quality, writing style, and reading level are all insulting to the children and the parents who read them. The illustrations are generally poor. Objectively, the majority of books out today are not good books. A few silly books here and there in your shelf, whatever. But it’s the majority of books in the bookstores. You have to go to great lengths to find good book lists, not to mention the books themselves. Never mind all the weird messaging in children’s media today.

    It has been a minute since I’ve gotten a comment like this. Most people in the space of creating books how much work it takes to publish your own book. There are many reasons as to why I decided to self publish: Creative control: I have a specific vision on what I wanted to create and I wanted the final say from character names, mediums used for illustrations, to material on the books. Owning a business: I have wanted to own my own business since I was younger and everything just fell into place. I have big plans for my publishing company. Character rights: I can’t imagine selling my rights to a big publisher. I want to own my characters and I want to pass that ownership onto my children. Filling a void: many parents today feel the way I do. I wanted books that felt classic, but were given a facelift for my kids. Self publishing should never have a stigma attached to it. We applaud anyone who creates their good for their business, books are NO DIFFERENT. Im working on my second book and will be done soon!

    I had two favorite children's book when I was a child, my go-to's everytime. They were the absolute reason i became an avid reader and writer. One of them was a brazilian book "yellow riding hood", a twist on the red riding hood story but this girl was always scared of everything. It was written during Brazil's dictatorial regime as resistance and managed to pass censorship by being by marketed for kids. The story has a beautiful message and it is so important historically as a piece of resistance and hope. The other one was also a brazilian book, "even princesses fart". A silly little story on the surface, the same silly little story this author seems to be against, but with and amazing message of self love and honestly, just HILARIOUS. I loved it when i was a child, and it made me want to read more. Kids are kids. Let them have silly and fun books. What does them a disservice is not reading at all. What does them a disservice is making reading a boring task for them. There's space for both.

    Library worker here! It's important for kids to feel joy and engagement with their books, so while some kids might enjoy B.Potter and calmer narratives, some enjoy just having a fun time with quicker and silly narratives :D as long as you read with your kids and you both enjoy it (or in parents case: at least act like you enjoy it to encourage your child), it is all good 🎉🎉

      I agree! We have and enjoy those silly books. When we go book shopping I always let my kids pick out a couple books they want. Children's literature can be funny and silly, but it should never be stupid and patronizing.

    The second one existing doesn't make the other one dissapear, both have a place and are ment for different things. Kids will make jokes about farts and such either way and getting them to read while laughing is a good way to use up all that humor.

    • @lavenderbookco
      @lavenderbookco หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh for sure. I just don’t appreciate the frequency as to this is happening today. It comes across (even though I know it probably not intended) as a quick buck. When I create my children’s books, I put a lot of time and energy into create the layout and illustrations of the book. In the end it’s all personal taste. I know there are parents out there who don’t like my Beatrix Potter inspired books, and that’s ok ❤

  • @tarantula-ash
    @tarantula-ash หลายเดือนก่อน

    in my opinion, which could definitely be wrong, it's because these books were meant to be read with children, they're not just for children to read alone. But as times have changed, both parents tend to have to work and children are at school more hours in the day and have more things to learn, so are less interested in reading hobbies. Parents are also more tired with streamlined jobs now encompassing what would have been three or four jobs back in ms potter's age. The world got faster. Another point whilst we're on 'faster' is that capitalism churns out things based on trends that are largely analysed by computers. Companies want things made faster, produced faster, and are usually smaller than what they used to be, too. Now we have AI books which can be largely nonsensical and in some cases, full of dangerous misinformation. Of course, I don't have any kids, and when I did work with kids they weren't exactly the average demographic. so, bias on my end because i don't walk around studying what's on the market for kids books. This is just my two cents. Further disclaimer: I think there's room for both because you obviously do not want to overload your kids, and it's good to just let their minds rest!

    • @lavenderbookco
      @lavenderbookco หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I talk a lot about moderation. We have an enjoy the silly stuff. I do agree that I think these are just getting turned around faster. I think the classics are classic for a reason is because of the time and energy that went into them. They created magical worlds that spoke to kids from many backgrounds. This is why I pull a lot of inspiration from Beatrix Potter on my books. The most important thing in the end is that the kids are being read to. ❤

    Couldn’t agree more! It is so hard to find good books today. I spend forever finding modern books that I like enough to buy and bring home.

    I actually love when a book has a few harmless scribbles or messages in the front. It gives it this special history ❤

    I really enjoyed your video. Love the honesty and the passion you have for your business. I have a question: How do you drive traffic to your website? Is it just from social media, or do you have other tactics...like seo or paid traffic. Thank you and keep going...I'll keep watching!

      Thank you! I do as much homework as I can when it comes to SEO, following trends, etc. I am mainly using my social medias to drive people there. It’s still a learning process, but people definitely buy onto the person when it comes to small business and this can take time. ❤
