Flying the 1946 Skyvahl
The Skyvahl was kitted in 1946 by the Vahll Engineering Co. (They are still in business as of 2024). The frame was all made from aluminum. It has a wing span of 60 inches. This one was built by Dan Banjock. The engine is a Fhantom P30 converted to glow turning a 10X6 prop. The wing is covered with Monocote. Wood had to be glued to the under camber sections of the wing to allow the covering to adhere. The first flights took place in Aug 2023 but we ran out of day light and there were some minor repairs to be made. It took 8 months before we got back out the in April 2024. It took several trim flights to get it worked out. The 11th flight was outstanding and we just got it in before dark.

Martian Spaceship
มุมมอง 2652 ปีที่แล้ว
The Martian Spaceship has been an interesting and fun project. One cold winter day my friend Dan and I were having a late lunch at a restaurant, and looking over some old model airplane magazines. We came across the Martian Spaceship in an Air Trails magazine dated April 1954. It was designed by Roy Clough and his article indicated that it did fly. We decided we would like to build it if we cou...

Hi Frank,I still enjoy watching the videos of you and these Mini Skyhunters.Hope all is well and Happy New Year.
Hi Don, Great to hear from you. I just sent you an email. Happy New Year!
they flew the same number during filming of “The Blue Max “ in the early 1960’s … you might have forgotten, I guess !!!
Have you flown this system? How is it preforming? Do you think it's better than the fiorotti timer? Thanks
Yes, I do fly this system and it works very well. The Fiorotti timer has some features that I like such as G- Force that are not currently included in the Climb and Dive timer. However, Paul has added many features to the C&D timer since it came out. It's very easy to update the C&D timer when a newer program is available.
The black and white one is a beauty😍Thank you for sharing this!
Wow. 3 of them. It's quite remarkable.
I had the smaller .020 version decades ago.... I spent MANY a summer flying that thing. Good times!
I learned something today!! Thank you.
The Flite Streak was the first model airplane where I learned to the entire competition stunt pattern. Thank you
Thanks for your comment
My Jaw dropped thinking it'd be England or Switzerland 😮 wtf?
Is this Eastern Pennsylvania? I like your drone work What kind is it?
No, this was Viena, Maryland. Unfortunately the club lost this flying site. They did find a new site. We haven't seen it yet. They are still working on it.
@@nightnav no need to visit Europe! fk NO ! AMERICA has the most beautiful places in the world , No need to go spend money in another Country ☝️
Yeah, funny ! Thumb up !
Good moves!!!
The Golden Age Air Museum in Bethel Pa is a fantastic air museum
Very nice flight.
Pourquoi un modèle aussi grand. .....dans quel but .....?
Thought this was an RC version
Timo, Thanks for sharing your experiences. We'll have to see what we can do going off with a rich setting.
I still have the Sky Copter after 50 years. It has the 0,20 engine, but still the best adjustment was making it run so rich that it almost hovered, and launching it a bit tilted so it started first flying level back and forth, like in this video one launch. When it peaked in the end, it shot right uo to gain enough altitude to get that smart autorotation working. Actually the best launch was when I forgot to tighten the glow plug, and the engine surged so much that it came to a hover, landed, rose again fast, almost hovered, started to land, shot up, and then landed. But we did not dare to replicate that being afraid that the plug woulg come all loose and fling away never to be found again.... Cox models were popular here in Finland in the Seventies.
This is a very cool airplane, and from 1946 is great. That last flight was worth the effort by Dan.Great job recording this.Thank you Frank, and I hope all is good with you.
Thanks Don, Great to hear from you! I sent you an email a ways back and didn't get a reply so I was concerned. All is well here, I hope the same for you.
@@nightnav Sorry Frank,I did not see that.I am hanging in here. The stroke I suffered really did me in.I can't do very much, just sit around and try to watch videos.I was hoping for a decent retirement, but that sure didn't work out.I just got started flying rc,when the stroke hit.I had fun in the short time I did fly,but now videos are all I can do.I still have my Mini Skyhunters hanging in my bedroom, sure wish I could have enjoyed flying them.I do still watch your old videos, and your new ones.I wsh you the best.
@@jettechdonatkins Don, I'm so sorry to hear that. Hang in there, I wish you all the best and I look forward to hearing more from you.
What a beast, and the plane also.
Wow just amazing.
Thank you
LOL I just watched this again and realized how low the wing loading is for it to glide like that. Cool flight!
Congrats! Awesome flight!
Thank you
I think the tanks on these were too big! They definitely weren’t filling it all the way up or else it’s not the stock tank. I’d let mine go sometimes and be thinking ok that’s pretty high, whoa that’s really high, omg I can’t see it anymore please stop!
Great kits, I built and flew quite a few in the 70's. Flew for fun and slow combat. I eventualy bought balsa in bulk, had a friend saw maple strips for wing spars and built from scratch to save a few $$$. We also bought styrofoam in bulk sheets, made our own hot wire cutters and built fast combat planes as cheap as possible, I was not good pilot and went through a lot of planes.
Bob, Thanks for sharing those experiences. We pretty much do the same thing, balsa and kits a very expensive so we build our own. I hope you are still building and flying.
@@nightnav I haven't flown since the 70's and stopped building then too. Family, jobs, etc took over my time. But it was really a lot of fun and I discovered that working with my hands is great therapy for the body and soul. These days I work on bicycles so I can keep on riding into my 80's.
It's April 2024 and I am building an RC Dakota from a JMBR kit. I am using an electric outrunner and two tiny servos. I hope it does as well as the FF one I flew 50 years ago...lol. Old guy here,83. Been into this since 1970.
Based on how well the FF ones the guys around here fly, your RC version should do just fine. Good luck with it and if you can post a video of it and let me know that would be great.
@@nightnav Thanks for the comment. I recently built an enlarged RC Sniffer recently, another Joe Wagner 1950 design . KInd of short nose which required 3 oz of lead sitck-on weights to fly decently. The Dakota kit is also updated with laser cut balsa also from BMJR models in Florida. These folks modernize classic FF designs.
What a fine Long Island Grumman Hellcat!
Thank you
Never fill the tank.....smart
Che bei tempi, andavamo in giro a fare spettacolo e oltre a noi facevamo allegra tanta gente.
You are right. Based on the number of comments I have received many people enjoyed the video, and we had fun flying and taking the video. Thank you for your response.
Still have that exact one new and unopened in the box. Loved seeing yours fly. By the way, I believe you set the record for the most flights on one before it gets lost in a tree😂
Dumbest thing I've ever seen
Pourquoi un modèle si gros ....quel intérêt....??? Demande de gros efforts physiques croyez vous vraiment en cette formule ou juste une expérience....?? Merci
It was built just for the fun of it. Just to see what it would be like to build and fly a large model. And people seem to enjoy seeing it fly. Thank you for the inquiry.
Bravo
Superb !!!
That is great!!! So big you can see it to , love it
Thanks
Wow...a sight to see considering i owned one these when i was age 8..ill be 34 feb 21
Still have my Jr. Flight Streak in the basement with the original McCoy .19. Took the engine off a bit ago, cleaned it up, put it on my test stand and it fired right up after 50 years. Wow, love those old engines.
That is cool! I was 13 when I bought my 1st McCoy .19. I had a paper route and saved for weeks to get enough money . It went on a Jr Ringmaster. Not sure what happened to the engine, likely we wore it out.
Such great memories, it seems kids now days are missing out. I too had a paper route, made money, bought a kit, and a engine, built the kit, and flew it. Sometimes crashed. What a great learning experience for life.. I wouldn't trade it for anything. @@nightnav
I can actually smell the fuel right now
The physical effort to fly this was impressive! I had a Baby Flite Streak with Cox Black Widow on it in the late 70's. Silkspan and dope finish. I flew it so much that I wore out the engine. Great memories.
Good bye eardrums.
My first trip to the Toledo R/C show in 1978 was also my first time at a swap meet. One of the tables had a built-up Berkeley Savage for $2. I got my buddy and brought him back to show him, but it had sold while I was gone. That was when I learned to buy something when you see it, don't wait. This video is the first one I've seen in the air. Very nicely done.
I had a fleet of 049 control line planes. 4 baby flite streaks. Real fun airplanes.
I had a testors p63. Looked great, no power. Cox motors had more power. Great video
Thank you
Great flying -. Bravo
Nice video. I have 1 quick question. Will balance be changed when motor is turned on?. I made one free flight too. It flies fine when motor is turned off, but headstand immediately when motor is turned on. Not sure what caused it. th-cam.com/users/shortsn4aJKsgRNE8
Carrier landing is harder than would think, timing.
That is wild, good piloting, did not get tangled up.
Thank you
Your plane looks nice, I got a S clown, silver. The first one I hit the ground inverted, now have #2. I fly mine on 60, its fast. Thanks for your vids.
Thank you, Good luck with your Super Clown
Thanks I need it.@@nightnav
