    Thank you Rory as always your videos are so motivating! I have been studying French as an adult student since about 2021 - in person classes, duolingo etc). But since October 2024 I saw your videos and I got the Assimil book and now 3 months on I'm on lesson 57 :-). Lately and sometimes I struggle with the exercise 2 questions - where you need to write in the answers, is this normal? I also want to learn French like you for speaking not a test or grammar, but the book still talks about the grammar and at school in the UK I realised in the 80s (lol )we didn't cover grammar very well at all really so I'm learning only now what prepositions etc are even in English. I have also been watching the you tube cartoons with subtitles and started speaking french exchange on zoom with someone in Guadeloupe but only twice, we mainly email and text so far. I hope I'm on the right track. 🙂Suja

      Excellent question, and the answer is yes. Exercise 2 "fill in the blanks" is difficult. I struggled on them also. The reason it's difficult is because you are essentially writing French sentence, you are making them just like you would when you read or speak (AKA "output"). What is much easier to do to achieve an Intermediate level is focus on "inputs" (reading and listening). Which is what the rest of the Assimil lesson and Exercise 1 focuses on ! Texting and testing out your French with others is awesome and I hope you are enjoying watching those cartoons. You are doing exactly as I did to learn French and I had awesome success. I have no doubt you'll succeed from what I can see. Amazing work Suja! 🥳

    0:30 Hello Rory, how's the weather? Winter here in the northern hemisphere, temps at night in the single digits. Congrats on your french learning, it is a mountain to climb for sure. As mentioned in previous posting, my motivation is linked to Southern Canada, likely an ancestor that lived in Sutton Canada in Quebec, who was also in the American Revolution. That area is mainly french speaking. I am essentially trying to prove that lineage and need to learn some French. I like the Alliance Auckland Course Curriculum. The app Learn French for Beginners by Appcano LLC on Google playstore is used. I also like Learn French with Nat out of Montreal, and Virginie in France as youtube tutoring mentors so to speak. The Mango app is also useful in my opinion. There are other resources to use, but what do you think of those already mentioned? Be well and take care. BTW, Happy New Year Rory.

    Due to my limited tech abilities, I am struggling to figure out how I can make the Assimil USB more usable. Would you consider making a video about how to make the text from a single lesson play continuously? I watched an Alexander Arguelles video where he mentioned that he truncated the audio so that it didn't have spaces. He had a little mp3 device and was able to play the audio continuously. ATM I don't see the point of wasting time on the audio as I have to spend too much time clicking on one audio file for half a sentence of audio then returning to the list of files in order to listen to the following sentence! Perhaps there are other people like me would would benefit from such a video. BTW its great to see a fellow Aussie in this space!

    Hi Rory, given your experience and understanding of learning methods, for beginners have you heard of the Alliance Auckland Syllabus? This syllabus gives a breakdown of french language learning from A1.1 thru to C1.6 I propose it is a roadmap of what to learn for french language proficiency, language goals and grammer topics. However along with the language goals, there needs to be a map of how, when, and where to apply what is learned. A start would be for the student learner to keep a journal with each session, possibly to keep for a given year, and with each succeeding year create a new journal but to also keep the previous years journal. You have said the beginner learner should work on phrases. Remember I am the guy in the US developing the I hate french grammer method of learning french. OK, humor me, btw. Rory, Happy New Year. Be well.!

    • @FrenchCoach
      @FrenchCoach 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Rory, I just saw your video "How I Became FLUENT in FRENCH in 1 Year!" and I became extremely motivated. I am commenting here because this appears to be your most recent video. I am interested in obtaining the Assimil book (plus audio) that you recommend in your video, but when I located it on Amazon it I saw a reviewer post come photos with some pretty bad typos: Qu'est que c'est (missing -ce); page 713 in the book shows the French word for Object to be Object (it is not, it is Objet); and the 37th lesson, line number 6 shows J'ai n'a pas réussi (should be je n'ai pas réussi). Do you have these mistakes in your textbook? Maybe it is a publication date issue? Have these errors been corrected? The reviewer says that there are a lot of errors and these are but a few that they noticed. FYI, I am a false beginner. I studied French for 5 years in junior high and high school, and 3 semesters in college. My wife and I just moved to France in November and I could use a good refresher. This looked like a great product...until I saw that Amazon review. Please let me know if you have these same errors in your book, and if you found any others. Thanks!

      Hi Christopher, unfortunately, I can't share that PDF with you since it's a copy that I scanned myself and I am not allowed to send out to anyone else per the copyright rules. All of my students buy either the digital version (via e-book) or the physical book. www.assimil.com/en/with-ease/1670-french-9782700571233.html That error in the book that the Amazon reviewer wrote doesn't even matter. This is a book of approx. 10,000 French words, there is bound to be some spelling mistakes. Myself and my students have all used the book without any issue.

    German learner here, not sure about French, but here's my experience with Duolingo. I generally think of it as a free language service; sure, it does push getting a subscription, but you don't need one in order to get a decent balance. Duolingo has added some new features recently, such as pre-made "radio" programs in a target language, which really improve listening. Speaking is lightly used in exercises, but it is mostly paywalled for anything truly worthwhile. As I have gotten further in the curriculum, I, alike others, began to use it alongside other resources (German TH-cam, some media). In my opinion, Duolingo by itself cannot get you to a native level, but I still find it very helpful for previously listed reasons. Also, as a high-school student in Spanish classes, Duolingo is also helpful on the side for that.

  • @cnadycane
    @cnadycane 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think its good for some basics, but when you know the basis of a language its generally better to spend that subscription money on books, theory books to learn how the language works and general learning books.

      @@ilkayozdemir4064 I completely agree with @wolfgam. Make a spreadsheet and list down all the phrases you find interesting or would like to use in French. Have one column for the phrase in French and another for the English meaning. Something I personally found really helpful was learning conversations, and no individual words or grammar rules. So what you are doing here learning phrases is good. But even better I think is creating your own small conversations you make up. Use the phrases you hear in videos or find online to create these imaginary conversations and have some fun with them! You will remember them better and also have fun!

    definitely going to get some hate in the comments for sure. My husband has been using Duolingo for Japanese. It is what he started with. And he after a year+ of consistently doing it and a streak now of 700 and something days his job has started to utilize him at the Japanese airport checkpoint. now, he didn’t just use Duolingo. He has also watched TH-cam videos, Japanese news on TH-cam. Listen to Japanese music. As he is a singer, he has also attempted to write songs in Japanese and record them. he has also bought some of those level 123 etc. Japanese learners reading books. he bought an English/Japanese Bible. and watches TV shows in Japanese. Write in his journal in Japanese. And practices dialogue for work in Japanese. but… It all started with Duolingo and that got him very far until he wanted to learn/engage with more. and even now he is still carrying on with Duolingo daily. I believe he’s in section 2 unit 7 or something like that. Not entirely sure. (Edit to add he did all that w/o a subscription. With all the painful ads 🫠)

      thank you for sharing. It sounds like your Husband has done pretty well with Japanese by using some Duolingo and lots of other resources as well. That makes complete sense. My whole point with Duolingo is that it will never be a complete and reliable resource without other resources. It's not built to progress your level, it's built so you become addicted to the daily streak. But if your Husband has successfully used Duolingo to progress through with other more important resources that is perfect :)

      @FrenchCoach Obviously they have to make money off customers in general to continue creating their app, but that's not the whole "reason for the daily streak." The daily streak is also a motivator and can seriously help you in the language and eventually advancing into real conversation. It sounds like you finished Unit 1 and starting hating on Duolingo because you "didn't learn enough" without advancing further. Also, them making money should not be a point to the whole "this app is horrible and does not help you learn anything."

    for me, i personally find duolingo helpful for learning certain vocabulary words i don’t already know

    • @FrenchCoach
      @FrenchCoach 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      good. I didn't say it can't help in certain places like learning a couple of new words. but if you only use it, you will not progress with confidence.

    It's not the worst when it comes to language apps, because it teaches sentences, not just vocab. But it can only get you to high beginner, especially in the languages that don't have stories. I had Spanish at school and Duo helped me get back into it after not using it for a few years. Now I can watch Netflix in Spanish. Also I stated leaning Russian there and I could skip the A1 class at Uni qualifying for A2 solely through Duo. But now that my tree is golden I need to use other resources

      the problem is that it does not teach full conversations which are realistic. it gives you small "bites" of conversations which is not enough if you want to build your conversations level fast with confidence. Glad you were able to use Duolingo as a "springboard" to move into Netflix and other stuff to progress better. I agree that A2 is MAX for Duolingo, but I know there's other resources that are way superior, which is why I don't recommend it to anyone.

    You try hard learning French but you feel like you are not progressing fast enough, ask yourself whether your method learning French is going okay. If not, ask yourself what would be the best way to learn or whether the method needs to be improved. Watch FULL Video "How LARRY is Learning FRENCH with Me - LIVE Student".
