How I paint birch trees shows how I paint this subject in oils step by step. I go through each step over the course of four days, which enables the oil paint to dry before I begin each painting session. As always I try to limit my palette.

Painting a sunlit sky demonstrates my technique for painting a sunlit sky in oils on canvas, capturing the sunlight shining through the clouds on the Solway coast in Cumbria. Painting skies in oil paints is an excellent way to capture the subtle shades of colour in the sky, which can be created by blending the slow drying oil paint.

Painting figures has to be one of the most challenging subjects in painting and therefore for me one of the most satisfying. Here I use strong contrasts to dramatize the painting with tonal value, otherwise known as the 'Chiaroscuro' method. Sketching with oil paints with a distressed look to the oil paint. This is achieved by adding drops of mineral spirits to freshly applied oil pain. For this technique I find I have to thin the oil paint with Gamblin Galkyd medium.

Painting the morning light reflecting on a lake was painted in acrylics at Bassenthwaite in the lake just as the sun had risen. Full of drama as the sun started to shine, then the mist came and sent the landscape into near darkness.
