Revisiting I Set My Friends On Fire
มุมมอง 4.3K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
what's the story behind ismfof? ahead of trends and bringing different worlds of music together, i set my friends on fire was revolutionary in the post-hardcore scene. totally ahead of their time imo. here, i talk about a band that had everything going for them in the late 2000s. post-hardcore, screamo, rap and everything in between. RIP myspace

things MAXIMUM THE HORMONE does
มุมมอง 2.3Kปีที่แล้ว
MAXIMUM THE HORMONE is the most creative m̶e̶t̶a̶l̶ band ever imo. An in-depth look at their music and what techniques/tropes they like to use. Maybe you'll be inspired by them! join me as i try to put my love for them into words in this pseudo follow up to my first video
Who Are MAXIMUM THE HORMONE? (History & Discography Breakdown)
มุมมอง 22Kปีที่แล้ว
MAXIMUM THE HORMONE (マキシマム ザ ホルモン) is a Japanese metal/hardcore/punk band that's been making waves in Japan for years. They're mostly known for their works in anime like Death Note and more recently, Chainsaw Man. Aside from that, they aren't very well known internationally since they don't market themselves outside of Japan. but they're my favorite band fr so much so that i had to make a video...
UNDERRATED
Loved the video. Used to watch Death Note when i was Young and Maximum The Hormone introduce me to metal. Today was The First time i listen to Bu Ikikaesu. Much love from 🇧🇷
getting recommended gulch and sunami at playback studios in sj changed my life. i still think about that moment
Happy to stumble upon this video! Awesome job with this video and thank you for the shout out!! 🫶🤘
Yooo loved your interview 🫡🫡
Nao(?) the drummer is one of the make "bang for your buck" single members you can have in ur band. Shes a legit AWESOME drummer, and her vocals and melodies are creative 🔥 adding such awesome contrast. Love when she does loud pop/rock vocals like a the very end of the Chainsaw Man song. I've been in bands in the NYC hardcore/punk scene since the late 90's myself, and it's super rare to find one band member who can contribute so much and do it all so well. The whole band is top tier, love their writing, love Japanese Flea(jk, he's kinda his own person lol), and screaming dude adds a lot. Btw they actually did get airplay on the biggest metal station in the Northeast US 89.5 WSOU Pirate Radio (brag: heard them after I heard my own band get played in normal rotation, which was crazy enough, but they stood out so much they still caught my attention! Even if I busy indulging in a peak moment in my short, but sweet hardcore music career 😂). Anyone know, if they ever played the US? I have no idea how much of a fanbase they have here but I'm willing to bet it's much larger than you'd think. Just from all the anime OPs alone, ppl would come out to see them. Plus they look AWESOME live in videos I've seen
it’s cool to hear from a fellow hardcore musician! nao is a beast and adds so much to the band with her vocals, she’s one of my favorite drummers. MTH is one of a kind with their songwriting and approach to music and definitely have a following in the US, but sadly they’ve only played here a couple times
Dude is too zesty
peak content, searching info for japanese bands is just depressingly hard
Quite a few favourites of mine on here, I'd also recommend to anyone "mad capsule markets" they were a punk band in the 90's who took a turn into digital hardcore and nu-metal, in the early 2000's, crushingly heavy but also very high energy, very cyberpunk. They're no longer around but most of the members have other projects now all of which are great.
excellent vid!!! ❤ please do more, maybe deep dives into specific genres? 🙏🙏
Man i remember first discovering MTH when i moved to America in 07. I couldn't understand why my friends that liked metal and anime weren't as obsessed with MTH as I was.
cool video thanks for making it!
Can you do a video on Mad Capsule Markets please?
I’ve been obsessed with KL, saw them in August opening for Slipknot. They were better than Slipknot 😂
what band was mentioned @ 14:05 ?
the fubu flyer is some guy that wears the same jersey to every show and goes bananas on everyone around him. has become a legend
Im surprised LOUDNESS wasn't there. It was one of the first japanese metal bands to get popular in the U.S. in the 80's. You also barely touched shoegaze, my dead girlfriend, SEAPOOL, Honeydip, pasteboard, astrobrite, and Mass of fermenting dregs would be a good start. But my favorite by far is Coaltar of the Deepers, they have such an eclectic sound and have influenced many other japanese shoegaze bands in the tokyo area such as Tokyo Shoegazer, my dead girlfriend, cryuff in the bedroom, CQ, Boris, Astrobrite and many other bands. They've also had several band members from other bands as well, Watchman from Melt-Banana, Ichimaki from BP., and Akira Nakayam from Plastic Tree. Some of the genres they tap into are noise pop, shibuya-kei, death and thrash metal, jazz, goth, techno, surfer rock, synth, Basso-Nova, and many other genres. The frontman nackie always working on a bunch of side projects as well, he even made a music video movie for lack of a better word, he also made some soundtracks for Persona 4 and all of the background music for the anime Deadman's Wonderland.
I love love love love maximum the hormone!!!!! thanks for making this video cus it's hard for me to find information about then
ISMFOF was one of the very first bands I got into in the scene back in like...idk, 2009? I was a fan then, and they still remain my favorite band in this style. I don't listen to metalcore too much anymore, but when I do, it's usually ISMFOF. They just have something special. I think they're very self aware of how ridiculous they are in their music, while still having plenty of profound lyrics mixed in with the wild shit. It's just true art, a projection of the way their minds work. I fucking love everything they've done, even Astral Rejection. Even Caterpillar Sex stuff. I'm just waiting the thousand years for the 2 albums they're working on to come out. I do think Astral Rejection OG is better than the official release, but they're both awesome. Hearing Matt's growth over the years is super interesting and inspiring, and he is uncompromising in his creativity.
Thank for making this vid. I just got the album😅
omg. the clip at the end is from when I saw ismfof!! It was awesome to see not only ismfof but also my friends play alongside them :,D!!! They came to houston again not too long ago too B) ++ that clip is from grimfilmer he's got a plethora of awesome shit to check out 🫡

Elliot and Cole used to be in a band called “true hearted” it’s still availible on bandcamp .. also features homies from big boy and sunami. Super sick. I wish they released more under the band True Hearted
i’m so happy to finally see people talking about maximum the hormone!! they’re such a good band and i’m so happy to have finally found a video like this about them. amazing first video!! 😆🫶
Bay Area might be the most overrated scene in the world
Y’all missed out on that shit 😂
hey man i was also at nsfw dallas. s/o fubu. such a solid night & line up. it would’ve been tight to hear you talk about how everyone in zulu rushed the stage to confront the original sound guy who had a MAGA hat + lighting bolt tattoos and how Elliot from gulch ran from the right side of the stage - jumped over the drum set to the left where the sound guy was and apparently chased him in the parking lot. wild ass night for sure
sick, i did see that happen but didn’t know the context. glad to hear that though lol cause the ridglea theater blacklisted hardcore shows shortly after
Great video. I saw Maximum the Hormone live in concert at Viva La Rock, Saitama in 2022. Man, that was a fun time. They were so into sharing their music with the fans and gave off so much unbelievable energy while on stage. There was much headbanging to be had that day!
GREAT VIDEO! Maximum the Hormone is one of my favorite bands EVER, this video was a godsend for me, is awesome to see a more technical perspective and analysis on the things you love By the way, can you do the same thing with Diablo Swing Orchestra? It's my favorite band, and the only one I know that can come with even crazier genre mash-ups and ideas than MTH Keep the great work, you have a new subscriber!
appreciate it!! i'll check them out 🙏
Gulch is damn near D beat. I love them. Pure noise
THANK YOU FOR THISSSSSSSS
Ye
How the heck is Hanatarash that high and the likes of Envy, Melt Banana, etc lower than it? Lol, anyways some good picks, fucking love Corrupted! Also just toss in all harsh noise at the bottom haha
