Why you should try a surfski.
Sessions like this are some of the best parts of paddling a surfski: awesome waves, adrenaline, friends, the occasional mishap, and overall stoke. There are very few places more fun to paddle than Deception Pass even in more moderate conditions. In this video I paddle the Nordic Kayaks Nitro 640 and Double 670, which is probably the first Double Ski ever in Deception Pass and is an awesome boat for both experienced and newer paddlers.
I did a few laps in the Double with Ana Swetish after her foot pedal snapped and then she switched to a backup ski and our friend Kate hopped in and had an awesome time in the Double before also trying a single ski in the pass for her first time!

    Wow. Thanks for sharing. If I'm not mistaken, that's a rare occurrence where the swell from the open Pacific aligns perfectly with the axis of Juan de Fuca Strait. And looks like the wind has clocked around to the S? SW? somewhat allowing the face of the giant rollers to remain relatively clean. Respect!

    • @wilsonreavley
      @wilsonreavley 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not quite - it actually relies on the regular tide cycle because the pass funnels so much water you get an outgoing current usually between 6-9 knots and when enough wind from the West pushes in against that the waves stack up pretty much immediately!

    I’ve seen a few clips of you and Anna out there at deception. My brother moved up to Bellingham when he left Hawaii and goes out there to deception on his Fenn a lot too. I’ll go with him on the OC when I’m up there visiting. That current ripping through the pass when it switches tides get pretty intense. You don’t get tidal swings like that back in the islands. He just moved out to the peninsula now so doing a lot of exploring along the strait and sounds like there’s sick runs all along the strait around Neah Bay Area. Have you guys ever explored some of the DW along the strait on the peninsula? Looking forward to hitting some runs on the strait in a couple weeks when I’m up there! If deception is good we might head up that way for a run as well.

      You do know that she’s paddling into a strong current? Which means the waves standup behind you, but it’s not like downwind paddling where you get a push and have boat speed to launch into the trough? You’re literally paddling on a treadmill as the bumps jack up and roll under you. It’s like paddling on a standing wave in a wave pool. Unless you’ve experienced this, id suggest you fall on your sword.

    Hmmm, I'm gonna be the naysayer.. I'd take the waves in your "paddling a surfski below freezing" or "surfski downwind - f1 style" any day! The waves in this vid are too fast and too deep to actually ride and even you stall out or have no where to link, which is what I find the really fun and challenging part. But it does sound exhilarating in some way, especially in the cold! Thanks for posting! 😁😋

    • @wilsonreavley
      @wilsonreavley 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's certainly not as easy a spot to just link waves or hammer over small bumps but the experience of being in a surfski here is pretty incredible. It's hard to do justice to what's going on with the current in a video but when you do get a good wave here its amazing!!

    Wilson, what do you recommend for neoprene wear for Winter paddling in Bellingham Bay? I used NRS Hydroskin 0.5 from May-August, but I want to get back out there this Winter.

    • @wilsonreavley
      @wilsonreavley 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the late reply! It depends on conditions - for true immersion safety a full wetsuit or drysuit with layers is hard to beat but I often mix and match with 3mm Giantfish pants, some sort of mid weight top, and an nrs or similar waterproof jacket with secure wrists. My clothing choices are based around knowing how I react in cold water if I do happen to swim and having a very good understanding of how cold I can get before it will impair my ability to remount or handle my ski - any good clothing choice for the bay in winter should also factor what the conditions are, how far from shore you are, and who you're with. All that said have fun out there, winter winds are usually the best!

      Hard to put too much analysis into the boat performance here just because it's so hectic and unpredictable, but the NK is a larger, higher volume ski than the Fenn which Ana was paddling so it probably does tend to stay a little higher in the water. Also having a wave deflector on helps in these types of conditions because it sheds the water and helps pop the bow of the ski out of the water when starting to submarine!
